Overview

The 2022 Hyundai Palisade will be a carryover model seeing no significant changes except for the addition of more active safety features to the standard features list. As last year only, the Palisade received an all-new range-topping Calligraphy trim along with a few optional packages. With this the 2022 Palisade comes with a 291-hp, 3.6-liter V6 engine mated to a smooth-shifting gearbox with a choice of an FWD as well as an AWD configuration.

Starting at just $33,150, the Palisade is Hyundai's answer to SUVs like Toyota Highlander, Nissan Pathfinder, and its very own cousin the Kia Telluride. Living up to its reputation as one of Hyundai’s flagship cars, the Palisade is cut above the rest with its eye-candy styling, attractive gizmo, smooth maneuver, and spacious seating configuration. But is it competitive enough in the hotly contested mid-size SUV segment? Let's read below to find out.

Buying Advice

We would go with SEL trim as it brings a significant upgrade from the base SE trim. With a pricing premium of around $2,500, the SEL offers an array of value-added features like a sunroof, keyless entry, second-row captain's chair, and leather-wrapped steering wheel. It also offers a few packages like Convenience and Premium which can be had to gain more features that are otherwise exclusive to top trims.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

For the 2022 model year, the Hyundai Palisade carries forward most of its features and traits that made it a success in the mid-size SUV segment. The trim lineup remains the same, with the same list of onboard features. The Palisade bears a close resemblance to its cousin, the Kia Telluride. Still, both the Korean bestsellers are fundamentally different in the sense that the Telluride is more geared for rugged terrains and better handling, while the Palisade offers a more upscale interior with comfortable ride quality. The big V6 engine under the hood of the Palisade makes sure you always have power on tap. Loaded with several feel-good features and gizmos, the Palisade offers never seen before features in the segment or at its price point. No doubt, it is tops the sales chart.

Features
9.0/10

Just like the 2021 MY, the 2022 Hyundai Palisade will be available in four trims: SE, SEL, Limited, and Calligraphy. All the trims come powered by a 3.8-liter V6 engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is optional, while Front-wheel drive is standard on all trims. The SE trim comes standard with second-row bench seats while the SEL and higher trims offer second-row captain's chair as standard. Other than the standard features listed below in the table the SEL trim comes with two optional packages namely the Convenience package for $2,400 extra and the Premium package for $3,200 extra.

The Convenience package adds features like 20-inch alloy wheels, a hands-free liftgate, self-leveling rear suspension, front parking sensors, wireless charging pad, rear sunshades, 115-volt household-style power outlet, upgraded driver's display, and sound-reducing front side glass. The Premium package for which you are required to add the convenience package too offers leather upholstery, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, power-adjustable passenger's seat, power-folding third-row seats, 10.25-inch infotainment system with navigation, cabin intercom, and lane-keep assist.

Fuel Economy
4.0/10

Since the standard powertrain remains unchanged, the 2022 Hyundai Palisade will have the same MPG ratings as last year. With the standard V6 and the front-wheel drivetrain, the 2022 Palisade can return 19 MPG in the city and 26 MPG on the highway. This lends the SUV a combined 22 MPG, which is an average figure by its segment standards. Switching to the all-wheel-drive variant sees some drop in the MPG figures. The Palisade AWD sees a reduced highway MPG of 24 and a combined 21 MPG. Luckily, the Palidsade’s fuel economy in the city remains the same for the AWD variant.

The 2022 Palisade is just about average in its segment when it comes to fuel economy. While the rivals Nissan Pathfinder and Toyota Highlander offer very competitive MPG figures. Out of which the Toyota Highlander offers the best gas mileage beating the Palisade by 2 MPG in the city and 3 MPG on the highway. While Telluride being powered by the same powertrain as the Palisade returns the same gas mileage.

Interior
9.0/10

Hyundai has tried keeping the Palisade's interior fresh for this year with a clean dashboard design and a refreshed cabin. The large center console fits all the knobs and audio controls in one place. A small center stack houses all the climate controls. The dashboard sports a horizontal layout, giving an ergonomic as well as upscale look. The SE and SEL trims can seat up to eight passengers with relative comfort.

2022 Hyundai Palisade Dashboard

The higher trim levels only fit seven passengers as standard while lower trims offer a seating capacity of eight as standard. Headroom and legroom are sufficient enough in the first two rows and surprisingly the third-row space is sufficient to comfortably sit adults for short rides.

The Palisade includes a variety of gizmos to appeal to the tech-savvy driver. It includes an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple Carplay & Android Auto, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster on the Limited trim. While a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system is standard on Limited and above trims. The top-draw Calligraphy trim brings puddle lamps and a steering wheel covered with perforated leather seating surfaces.

2022 Hyundai Palisade Cargo Space

There is also plenty of space to store your luggage, with 18 cubic feet available behind the 3rd-row. Folding down the third-row grants you access to 46 cubic feet of space while folding both the 2nd and 3rd rows opens up a cargo space of 86 cubic feet.

It is quite a close battle in the interior dimensions between all the midsize SUVs in this head-to-head competition. The Palisade and the Telluride share the top spot here while the Nissan Pathfinder comes second-best. If not for the cramped thrid-rows eats the Highlander would have easily grabbed the second spot as it offers better legroom in the middle row seats compared to the Pathfinder. The trunk capacity of the Palisade just falls short of its twin, the Kia Telluride, and other rivals as well. Kia offers the best-in-class cargo capacity of 21 cubic feet behind the third row of seats.

Interior Features:

  • Height-adjustable driver's seat
  • Power-folding second-row seats
  • 8-inch touchscreen
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

  • Rear Seat Quiet Mode (silences the speakers in the second and third rows)

Exterior
7.0/10

The 2022 Hyundai Palisade hits the ball out of the park with its unconventional yet eye-catchy exterior design. Viewers will easily distinguish the all-new chrome trim accents, which add a lot of character to the massive SUV. The massive honeycomb grille joined by attractive LED headlights showcases the brute persona of the Palisade. You can customize your Palisade with Convenience and Premium packages that offer an array of options.

Buyers also get a taste of different styling elements through the different trims. For starters, the SE and SEL trims get 18-inch alloy wheels. The Calligraphy and the Limited trim levels ride on more stylish diamond-cut 20-inch alloy wheels. The Calligraphy trim gets a custom treatment of its own, with its own LED signature front fascia and a large central LED brake light to distinguish itself from the rest.

The Palisade’s exterior dimensions are almost similar to most of its rivals. However, the Toyota Highlander is relatively smaller in length and as a result, gets a smaller wheelbase compared to the other three SUVs. When comparing the curb weight of the SUVs in the competition, Nissan Pathfinder is the heaviest and still manages to outperform the rivals in the acceleration timing department.

Exterior Features:

  • LED headlights
  • 18-inch alloy wheels

  • Bold honeycomb front grille

Safety
9.0/10

In terms of safety, the 2022 Hyundai Palisade is a well-equipped car with automatic emergency braking, rearview camera, LED headlights with automatic high beams, active lane control, rear parking sensors, and adaptive cruise control with stop/go function as standard. On the SEL and higher trims, safety features like a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, a heads-up display, surround-view camera, downhill brake control, and front parking sensors become standard.

The Hyundai Palisade received the "Top Safety Pick" award for 2021 from IIHS, with the highest rating of ‘Good’ in all safety aspects and a ‘Superior’ rating for its frontal crash prevention measures. The Palisade also received a 5-star overall safety rating from NHTSA. We expect the same safety ratings to carry forward to 2022.

Safety Features:

  • Forward collision mitigation w/ emergency braking
  • Rearview camera
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Heads-up display
  • Surround-view camera
  • Front parking sensors

Competition
8.5/10

2022 Hyundai Palisade vs 2022 Kia Telluride

These two SUVs are identical twins from the same family but yet sport several noticeable differences. Visually, the Kia Telluride has more squared-off looks than the Palisade that may appeal to the classic SUV enthusiast. The Palisade has a smoother ride quality over rough surfaces, while the Telluride has a stiffer and more rugged ride.

The Palisade is more diverted towards the opulent side than the Telluride, while the latter has the advantage with better handling and slightly more cargo space. In the end, it all comes down to brand preference.

2022 Hyundai Palisade vs 2022 Nissan Pathfinder

The Nissan Pathfinder leaves the Palisade tasting the dust in terms of outright acceleration, towing capability, and fuel economy. Also, the Pathfinder is just better in terms of maneuverability and handling than the boat-like driving Palisade. While the Palisade's tech suite offers a more driver-centric and intuitive than the one on the Pathfinder.

In the cargo department, both the SUVs are neck-to-neck, although the Palisade emerges as the clear winner in terms of overall cabin space. However, if you consider the overall style quotient, affordability, and value-for-money, the Palisade comes out on top over the Pathfinder. Although if you can ignore a couple of its cons then the Pathfinder isn't a bad option either.

2022 Hyundai Palisade vs 2022 Toyota Highlander

The Toyota Highlander has been a value-for-money proposition in its segment, thanks to its trusted brand reputation, and good resale value. The Palisade has its perks like three years of free maintenance to compete against Toyota's reliability. The Palisade is also the more luxurious of the duo with more tech features than the Highlander to appeal to the tech-savvy driver.

The Highlander may have the edge in terms of fuel economy, but the Palisade is simply the better option to drive your family in style and comfort. As it offers more space and overall a pliant ride quality which is missing on the Highlander.

Final Verdict
8.5/10

The 2022 Hyundai Palisade is a jack-of-all-trades, offering all the positive traits of an excellent SUV available at a bargain price range for families. Although the powertrain remains unchanged, the Palisade is still the best bet in the three-row crossover segment. As an added plus Hyundai has given the Palisade a plethora of standard gizmo and safety techs. The three-row SUV sports roomy interior and cargo space to justify itself as a splendid weekend ride for families. Moreover, with Hyundai’s excellent warranty terms and customer service on the line, the Palisade emerges as a well-rounded SUV in its segment.

Pros - ["Family vehicle", "Amazing room inside", "Very comfortable to drive"]

Cons - ["Sunroof leaked a week after owning it", "Ac blows really weak in the rear", "Floor carpet is hard to clean"]

I love the palisade it's a great family vehicle. It hold my big family with carseats . Kids have enough space to not fight with each other. I love the passenger talk to I no longer have to strain my voice to talk to the kids. The vented seat are awesome especially in this florida heat ð¥µ
