Overview

The 2022 Hyundai Kona is refreshed with many exterior and interior changes. The 2022 Hyundai Kona price starts at $21,300 and an addtional destination fee of $1,295 is levied over the base price across all the trim configurations. The front fascia is more aggressive and features updated lighting elements and wider grille. Even the wheel designs are new and Hyundai has introduced a sportier Kona N-Line trim with more horsepower for the 2022 model year. The 2022 Hyundai Kona N also debuts this year and is the most performance-oriented version with maximum horsepower.

Featuring a 5-trim lineup of Kona SE, Kona SEL, Kona Limited, Kona N-Line and Kona N, the Hyundai Kona 2022 MSRP can be an expense of $22,595-$35,495 this season. Having said that, it simply translates to the fact that the range-leader Kona N will cost you $12,900 more than the base Kona SE for enhanced specs and assets.

We Recommend

We would suggest the well-equipped Limited trim for casual drivers. However, for those interested in outright performance and track-ready dynamics, the Kona N 2022 would be our recommendation.

The 2022 Hyundai Kona SE and SEL are equipped with a 2.0-liter engine with 147 hp. The Limited and N-Line models get a 1.6-liter turbo engine with 195 hp. The performance-oriented 2022 Hyundai Kona N outputs 276 hp and can sprint from 0-62 in 5.5 seconds. The 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric offers decent handling and guilt-free driving experience with 258 miles of range per charge. The 2022 Kona's cargo space of 19.2 cubic feet is reasonable for daily commuting. However, the Kona Electric, N-Line and N trims are reviewed separately. The 2022 Kona offers better gas mileage than the Mazda CX-3, higher power output than the Nissan Kicks and better interior layout than the Honda HR-V. Let’s see the 2022 Hyundai Kona review ahead. .

2022 Hyundai Kona for sale

Over a starting price of $21,300, an additional destination fee of $1,295 is levied. The Kona 2022 can be financed at 3.29% APR for up to 48 months and can be leased for $209 per month (36 months) with $3,899 due at signing.

For budget-oriented buyers, the used 2022 Hyundai Kona can be availed of with a base price of $19,900. Going for older model years like the 2021 Hyundai Kona could be a matter of $19,995 and Hyundai Kona 2020 can cost as much as $18,884 along with a listing of 2,984 in total.

Buying Advice

The Hyundai Kona offers decent straight-line performance in any of its trims, but the N-line offers a more direct driving experience with an AWD system that shows much more urgency than the same system that is optional in other trims. That being said, the way it drives is only preferable for some, and the rest of the Kona trims offer a more sedate driving experience. If punchy performance isn’t on your list of expectations, then the fully loaded Ultimate trim is a great option to have, considering it is only $10k more expensive than the base SE variant and offers so much more.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2022 Hyundai Kona is reintroduced with significant changes. However, with the introduction of the N-Line and N trims, the game is now on the next level.  Now the Kona has joined Hyundai Elantra, Sonata, and Tucson in the “N-Line” version group  The 2022 Hyundai Kona SUV scores an overall 79/100 in the J.D Power Consumer Rating and the score can be termed as “Average”. However, in the quality and reliability sector it scored 83/100, which can be termed as “Great”. For resale it scored 79/100, while in the driving and dealership experiences, the Kona scored 80/100 and 71/100 respectively.

The Kona Hyundai 2022 can be considered as a relatively affordable car to own. Considering a period of five years, the “Cost-to-Own’ one is mainly divided into depreciation, fuel, repairs, insurance and maintenance. The depreciation, fuel, repairs, insurance and maintenance are estimated to be $10,430, $13,420, $665, $6,395 and $4,396 respectively. With zero recalls and 26 complaints registered with the NHTSA, the 2022 Kona problems are not very significant in nature. So, the long term ownership should not be concern for most buyers.

Buying Advice

We Recommend

The Hyundai Kona offers decent straight-line performance in any of its trims, but the N-line offers a more direct driving experience with an AWD system that shows much more urgency than the same system that is optional in other trims. That being said, the way it drives is only preferable for some, and the rest of the Kona trims offer a more sedate driving experience. If punchy performance isn’t on your list of expectations, then the fully loaded Limited trim is a great option to have, considering it is about $7,300 more expensive than the base SE variant and offers so much more.

Features
9.0/10

"Cheeky design, gutsy optional turbo engine, plentiful standard features." - Car and Driver

The 2022 Hyundai Kona gets a handsome exterior, reliable mechanicals, and uncluttered interiors, making for a promising platform upon which they have based an all-electric model “Kona Electric” as well. The various gas-powered variants in the United States strike a great balance between performance and fuel economy. The N-Line trim offers sporty aesthetics with enhanced performance, while the Kona N 2022 offers the maximum performance in the Kona lineup with multiple track-ready credentials.

The 2022 Kona SE offers projector halogen headlamps, LED daytime running lamps, 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, 4.2-inch MID, wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay as standard . The Kona SEL adds heated exterior mirrors with side turn indicators, optional two tone roof, roof side rails, shark-fin antenna, optional heated front seats, and wireless device charging. The Limited and N-Line trim offer multiple features like LED headlights, LED tail lights, high beam assist, power sunroof, leather-trimmed seats and powered driver seats.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

"In this class of fuel-sipping mini-SUVs, the Kona's EPA ratings are good but only average among its rivals." - Car and Driver

The crossover segment targets the audience looking for compact cars with efficient motors under their hood. The 2022 Kona should qualify for such a group with its sluggish yet efficient 2.0L Inline-4 engine. With the base engine 28/33/30 mpg in city/highway/combined conditions, the 2022 Hyundai Kona fuel economy is decent but not the best. With a 13.2 gallon fuel tank, the Kona 2022 can deliver 396/462/422 miles of driving range. The same figures will drop slightly with an AWD drivetrain.

The 2022 Hyundai Kona is not the table leader as the spot is earned by the Kicks with the best economy figures owing to an underpowered engine and a frugal CVT.  The Hyundai Kona is followed by Mazda CX-3 and Honda HR-V with lower mpg ratings. However, with an acceptable range and lower fuel consumption, all the subcompact SUVs will reduce the number of fuel stops on a long journey.

Interior
6.0/10

" The steering wheel is wrapped with nicely grained leather with contrast stitching and offers integrated controls for cruise control and audio settings." - Car and Driver

The 2022 Hyundai Kona brings certain changes to the interior. There’s added insulation and new windshield glass to improve NVH. The dash adds a new climate control bar and the console is disconnected from the instrument panel yet the recess for a wireless smartphone charger is visible. Besides these, the Kona has added a second-row room and cargo space. The sophisticated and progressive appearance of the interiors remains intact. The cabin is well laid out, and the ergonomics are quite comfy for vehicles of such size. Decent quality materials are furnishing the cabin along with optional leather upholstery available for adding levels of high-class appeal to the Kona. As expected, the Kona SE and SEL interior features cloth seating surfaces. The Kona N-Line interior features unique N-Line sport cloth seating surfaces.

The top-tier 2022 Kona Limited trim features leather upholstery. Also, there is ambient lighting to illuminate the cupholder and footwells, while an aluminum-like finish adds refinement. Majorly, Hyundai has made use of black and gray interior colors. The 2022 Kona cargo space is limited to 19.2 cubic feet. However, the rear seats can be folded down to provide 45.8 cubic feet of cargo volume. Some interior features like red accents inside the N-Line trim, remote keyless entry system, available Hyundai Digital Key, automatic temperature control, powered driver’s seat, and heated front seats are some of the major highlights of interior features found in the N-Line and Limited trims. No matter the trim, Kona’s cabin is well-designed and ergonomic.

The 2022 Nissan Kicks offers a decently spacious cabin and maximum cargo capacity in the comparison. It is followed by Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona and Mazda CX-3.  However, buyers looking for upscale and premium interiors can opt for the Mazda CX-3. The Honda HR-V offers the best rear seat legroom, followed by Hyundai Kona, Mazda CX-3 and Nissan Kicks. Overall, the passengers inside the Kona wouldn't be disappointed with the legroom and cargo volume.

An 8.0-inch infotainment display is standard, while a larger 10.25-inch infotainment screen is available. A head-up display rises from the dashboard and displays multiple information on the go. As expected the infotainment system is loaded with features like wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, USB ports, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Bluelink Connected Car System. For music lovers, the N-Line and Limited trim offers Harman-Kardon premium audio system.

Some of the key interior features of the 2022 Hyundai Kona include:

  • 7-inch touchscreen upgradeable to an 8-inch touchscreen color display with navigation
  • Optional leather seats
  • 60/40 split fold-down and reclining rear seatback with the adjustable head restraint

"The subcompact Kona is, simply put, a great package that blends carlike on-road behavior with bold styling, a dose of practicality, and an elevated driving position" - Car and Driver

The 2022 Hyundai Kona has received impressive exterior tweaks. The refreshed Kona features new front and rear bumpers that add distinctive character. The old, massive grille has been divided into two individual grilles, where the lower grille mimics rugged skid plate elements. The 2022 Kona now offers N-line trims that add sportiness by featuring N-inspired styling.

The 2022 Hyundai Kona N-Line also features 18-inch alloy wheels and dual exhaust outlets that catch the attention of passing eyes. To make the refreshed Kona look even more refreshing than it actually is, Hyundai offers a choice of multiple exterior colors. The 2022 Hyundai Kona colors like Blue Wave, Cactus Fern, Cyber Silver, Lunar White, Pulse Red, Teal Isle, Thunder Gray and Ultra Black elevate the presence of this subcompact SUV.

It is the heftiest among the rivals, while the lengthy Honda HR-V offers the lightest riding quality in the lot. The Honda HR-V offers the best ground clearance followed by Nissan Kicks, Hyundai Kona and Mazda CX-3.

Some of the key exterior features of the 2022 Hyundai Kona include:

  • Projector headlamps upgradeable to LED headlights with DRLs
  • Automatic headlights
  • Body-color exterior rearview mirrors (except Night trim)

Safety
8.0/10

"Buyers searching for popular driver-assistance features will find them on the Kona, which offers automated emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and a driver-attention monitor as standard equipment." - Car and Driver

The 2022 Hyundai Kona has very recently undergone the scrutiny of safety authorities such as the NHTSA. It scores a phenomenal five out of five-star rating in the aspects of overall rating, frontal crash rating, and side crash rating. However, in the aspect of rollover rating, it scores only a four out of five-star rating. The Hyundai Kona safety rating 2022 stay the same for the AWD and FWD variants.

Some of the key safety and driver assistance feature suite includes:

  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA)
  • Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA)
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA)
  • Rear Occupant Alert (ROA)
  • Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with stop and go
  • Highway Drive Assist (HDA)
  • Lane Following Assist (LFA)
  • Safe Exit Warning (SEW)

Competition
7.5/10

2022 Hyundai Kona vs 2021 Honda HR-V

The 2022 Hyundai Kona is mightier and more powerful than the 2022 Honda HR-V. The same lead can be seen in the case of fuel economy. Kona has a more modern and progressive interior, while the Honda HR-V needs an interior upgrade to replace all the hard plastic and add more modern tech. Both rivals being front-wheel driven, offer similar driving dynamics, though both can be upgraded to AWD as an option.

2022 Hyundai Kona vs 2021 Nissan Kicks

Both the Kona and Kicks offer incredible styling, upscale and modern interior, and infotainment, and competitive safety tech. But the Nissan Kicks has less attractive power figures but it turns things around by being more efficient. The 2022 Nissan Kicks is pocket-friendly to an extent of 3 grand as compared to the 2022 Kona.

2022 Hyundai Kona vs 2021 Mazda CX-3

The 2022 Mazda CX-3 offers the most attractive figures in the rivalry, and also leads the 2022 Kona in terms of brisker acceleration and better handling. It also offers more economical figures than the 2022 Kona that makes it suitable for both daily drives and pushing it to limits once in a while. Kona offers a more spacious cabin and a wider suite of safety features than the Mazda. The CX-3 is elegant and stunning and looks more appealing than the 2022 Kona, but in the end, it’s the buyer’s call.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Hyundai Kona and the upgrades will surely receive a warm welcome from the crowd; the newly introduced N-line trim does offer a sportier makeover to the standard Kona. The interior has received updates too and is quite appealing to both the younger crowd with better tech and to the older generation with rugged yet comfortable interiors. The cabin is quite practical and spacious. The 2022 Kona and its first-class safety ratings in the crash tests of safety institutes will make it a better deal than the rivals, and with a plethora of safety features, it is already better than some popular nameplates.

              Kona is worth the money

Pros - ["It easy to start, and easy on gas", "The seat it made for short people", "It a lot faster than I expected"]

Cons - ["I got scratch on the rear door", "Oil change can be expensive", "Smaller than I was expecting"]

It decent car for the AWD it easy to use and on gas but it not great if u need space to carry items. It also only fits 2 car seats no room for a third.ober all decent but not perfect for everyone. Kona
