Overview

The 2022 Toyota C-HR marks the end of the moniker and will no longer be available for the 2023 model year. The reason for that is the new subcompact Toyota Corolla Cross, which was released last year. The base LE trim is no longer on sale leaving the XLE the entry point to the C-HR. A new Wind Chill Pearl paint color replaces the Blizzard Pearl which also can be complemented with the black contrast roof. The 2022 Toyota C-HR price starts at $25,615 and competes against the likes of the Chevrolet TraxHonda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, and Volkswagen Taos

We recommend

going for the XLE trim. It offers a much more aesthetic interior design and has many of the new modern features which are missing in the base model. For the price, the XLE offers the most value. The Nightshade offers a more serious, blacked-out design, but is not worth paying the extra thousand dollars.

2022 Toyota C-HR for sale

The 2022 Toyota C-HR finance offers begin at $491/month for a 60-month period at 9.07% APR with a $2,000 down payment. The Toyota C-HR lease deals start at a monthly payment of $432 for a duration of 36 months with $3,082 due at the time of signing and has a 12,000-mile annual mileage limit.

Buying Advice

We recommend going for the XLE trim. It offers a much more aesthetic interior design and has many of the new modern features which are missing in the base model. For the price, the XLE offers the most value. The Nightshade offers a more serious, blacked-out design, but is not worth paying the extra thousand dollars.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2022 Toyota C-HR offers a quirky design along with the frugality and reliability that comes along with the brand name. It also helps in getting better resale value. The Toyota C-HR 5-year cost of ownership is around $38,628 and expect maintenance costs to be around $4,576 for the first 5 years of ownership. The J.D. Power reliability rating of 81/100 is marginally behind the Mazda CX-30 and Nissan Kicks

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

The 2022 Toyota C-HR is pretty fuel efficient similar to other Toyota offerings and is rated to return 27 MPG in the city and 31 MPG on the highways. While it is pretty efficient in itself, rivals like the Honda HR-V and Hyundai Kona are more frugal in nature.

Interior
5.0/10

The cabin can feel claustrophobic too, thanks to the tiny windows in the rear seat, and its measured cargo volume is less than that of some small hatchbacks - Motortrend

The 2022 Toyota C-HR interior continues to look youthful with its optimistic design approach. The diamond-themed design is being continued with the interior as well. A faux leather dash with artificial stitching manages to look premium but fails to offer a premium feel. An 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display is mounted on top of the dashboard, covered nicely with piano black inlays which run throughout the dash. Despite the fact that hard plastics surround the entire interior, it manages to project a premium appearance.

Two adults can sit comfortably in the front row, while only two youngsters can fit in the rear. A seating capacity of 5 is common in all but practically, C-HR can accommodate only four. It has cramped rear seats. In terms of luggage capacity, the 2022 C-HR has 19.1 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 37.0 cu ft if those seats are folded down. It can hold three medium suitcases and a few duffle bags before being complete. The cargo capacity is adequate enough in all cars while that of HR-V is exceptionally good.

Exterior
7.0/10

The C-HR is a recent member of the Toyota family and hence it hasn’t gone through any major overhaul for the year 2022. However, it got some minor updates in terms of features and two new trims were added in 2019. The exterior is influenced by a diamond-like structure that features lots of sharp and angled elements. Since the upcoming 2022 C-HR will not undergo any significant changes, the exterior is expected to be the same as the outgoing one.

The front looks bulky and bold. The elegant and sleek projector headlamps merge perfectly with the primary front grille and hold the Toyota logo right at the center. Coming to its side profile, the C-HR seems to be a hybrid between a subcompact crossover and a coupe. The sloping roof incorporates a spoiler and perfectly conceals the rear door handle. The broad body cladding and black wheel trim enhance its looks. Without a doubt, the C-HR is the most visually pleasing crossover of the competitors.

The above table clearly showcases that the C-HR is the bulkiest among others and that does affect its acceleration times too. Also, its ground clearance is the least among rivals, which is a little bit of a task to cross bumpy roads. Major Exterior features include:-

  • Aerodynamic rear lower diffuser with back rear and lip spoiler, vortex generators
  • 18-inch sport alloy wheels
  • Power Liftgate
  • Automatic adaptive projector LED headlights with auto on/off feature
  • LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL) with on/off feature

Safety
5.0/10

The 2022 Toyota C-HR is based on the TNGA: GA-C platform which is also being shared with Lexus UX, Toyota Corolla Cross, and Toyota Corolla (E210). The 2022 Toyota C-HR safety rating of 4 stars out of the possible 5 stars from NHTSA is on par with the segment standards. It has a rollover risk of 14.3% reflecting its excellent dynamic stability. That said, the C-HR also received a ‘Top Safety Pick’ award from IIHS.

Toyota offers a wide range of active safety features which include:-

  • Forward-collision warning w/Pedestrian detection sensor
  • Lane departure warning & Lane keep assist
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Automatic high-beam headlights
  • Blind-spot monitoring w/Rear cross-traffic alert

Competition
8.0/10

2022 Toyota C-HR vs 2022 Honda HR-V

Appearance-wise, the C-HR is a clear winner while the HR-V is the most balanced in the segment. Despite being the smaller engine, HR-V managed its power figures very well and both cars deliver almost similar power output. Both the cars performed well in the safety crash tests but the C-HR got the advantage of its ‘Top Safety Pick’ crown. The 2022 HR-V is expected to be completely revamped with a better powertrain and styling.

2022 Toyota C-HR vs 2022 Hyundai Kona

The Hyundai Kona is a perfect bundle with utility and style and comes at an attractive price. With a starting price of about $20,000, the Kona is the most affordable choice in this category. The Kona is a sleek-looking crossover while the C-HR showcases its boldness. Both cars have almost identical power figures and fuel economy as well. The C-HR performs better in terms of interior ergonomics and overall configuration, which induces a sportier driving intent.

Final Verdict

With its emerging looks, the 2022 C-HR surprises most buyers, and moreover, it might be a dominating factor for someone to consider this crossover. The diamond-themed design of C-HR would not change much for the upcoming model since it still looks appealing. Moreover, the crossover is now expected to get an updated Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 suite. The comfortable seats, spacious front, and the car's safety ratings make it an interesting choice in the crowded crossover class. However, the bad NVH levels are the issue with the car but it isn't a dealbreaker.

              Amazing Toyota

Pros - ["Safety in it", "The trunk is spacious", "Smooth drive"]

Cons - ["The passenger seat isn't automatic", "Nothing else that's good", "That's it that's good"]

It's a very sleek looking car amazing safety features and when a car is beside you it flashes on the side it's on. I have 3 little ones and I've never felt safer between me and my husband we have 5 cars this is by far my favorite.

Cons - Dangerous not being able to open hatchback from inside of vehicle, as this could be fatal if you needed that as an exit.
