Overview

Crossovers are becoming very popular in today’s time and Toyota decided to enter this market with the C-HR that would directly compete with the top guns in the Crossover class. Introduced in the year 2018, it is a crossover SUV with its unique design and features and was sold quickly as soon as it was launched.

Buying Advice

We recommend you to go for the base LE trim as it has tons of new features especially at a family-friendly price not exceeding over $20,945 and hence proving more value than the other trims. However, if the price is not a concern then you can always go for the top trim as you will get the maximum offering from the 2019 Toyota C-HR.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

This year it is virtually unchanged but it does come with new trim levels and a revision in the standard equipment. The Toyota C-HR has tried to make the 2019 model better than the previous years offering to expand its sales. The main competitors of the 2019 Toyota C-HR are the Subaru Crosstrek, Hyundai Kona, and Honda HR-V. Can the Toyota C-HR stand out as the top Crossover for 2019 in the US?

Features
7.0/10

The Toyota C-HR is available in three trims mainly known as LE, XLE, and Limited. The LE was slotted in for the 2019 model year to be competitive on the price front, while also being well-equipped for the class. A jump to XLE adds in various amenities and gives a safety upgrade as well. The Limited is the range-topper and comes with the best features from Toyota’s stable.

Navigation

Since the C-HR is already very well-equipped from the get-go, it doesn’t have a lot of options on the table. But for what it's worth, the Base can be equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels for $365, whereas the other trims get an Audio Plus package that adds an upgraded infotainment system along with an upgraded 8-speaker set up along with other infotainment features.

Which trim should you buy?

We recommend you to go for the base LE trim as it has tons of new features especially at a family-friendly price not exceeding over $20,945 and hence proving more value than the other trims. However, if the price is not a concern then you can always go for the top trim as you will get the maximum offering from the 2019 Toyota C-HR.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

The 2.0L Inline-4 engine in the Toyota C-HR does a decent job in the MPG department as well. It provides 27 MPG in the city and about 31 MPG on the highway and 29 MPG combined. However, the fuel tank capacity could have been better which would have increased its overall range.

The Subaru Crosstrek has the best MPG figures on the list all thanks to the powertrain combination. It also, coincidentally, has the biggest fuel tank capacity that aids it in the range as well - which is miles ahead of the others in the competition. The Toyota C-HR, on the other hand, is very similar to the HR-V and the Kona but loses out on-highway fuel efficiency.

Interior
4.0/10

The 2019 Toyota C-HR did not go with a crazy design in the interiors like the exteriors. Instead, it gets a typical interior layout which is seen in almost all of the Toyota cars. The interior layout is very stylish with an abundance of the latest technology. The dashboard of the car is streamlined and looks premium. The dashboard is covered in soft-touch material. The AC vents are asymmetrical and match the aesthetics of the dashboard. All the buttons and controls are finished in chrome.

The steering wheel is electrical but feels very light and nimble with the control buttons arranged in an orderly manner. The space in the front is good so there are no issues for taller folks getting in and out of the car. The 2019 Toyota C-HR seats 5 people in two rows. Cloth seats come standard which can be upgraded to leather-trimmed seats. The seats are cushioned and are comfortable for long rides. The armrest is comfortable and wide enough for both the driver and the passenger. Towards the back, there is sufficient space for two adults and a child. Overall the entire interior layout of the car is good and justifies its price point.

The Toyota C-HR has sufficient seating space but space in the rear is a bit less. The Honda HR-V on the other hand has the best rear legroom available. Coming to the cargo capacity, the Toyota C-HR comes last in the list while the Honda HR-V tops the list. Having said that, some of the standout interior features of the C-HR are as follows:

  • Tilt/telescopic adjustable steering wheel
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control system with pollen filter
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Leather-trimmed heated front bucket seats
  • 8-way adjustable driver's seat
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The 2019 Toyota C-HR gets a 4.2-inch TFT multi-information touchscreen infotainment display. However, the Limited trim gets an 8-inch touchscreen display. The display has customizable settings and is of excellent quality with no screen glare issue even in bright sunlight. The display includes Bluetooth connectivity with voice control. It has a USB and auxiliary ports. It also has Android Auto and Apple CarPlay in its tech suite.

It has a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot that will provide a good internet connection inside the car. A stereo system will take the party to the roads. Finally, it has a navigation that is accurate and works perfectly fine. Some of the highlights of the infotainment system are as follows:

  • 4.2-inch TFT Multi-information Touchscreen Infotainment Display
  • Optional 8-inch TFT display
  • Voice control
  • USB ports
  • Auxiliary ports
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • 4G LTE Wifi Hotspot

Exterior
7.0/10

The 2019 model year of the Toyota C-HR comes with no exterior changes. The exterior of the C-HR is unique which may look different for different people. For some, it may be a dealmaker and for some, it may be a dealbreaker. The overall car is curvy with body lines present everywhere. The front and back profile of the car looks rugged. The LED headlamps and taillights match the aesthetics of the car. The alloys also look premium complementing the alien design.

The length of the Toyota C-HR is the heaviest car in the class which explains the disappointing performance. No car is even near the Subaru Crosstrek in terms of their ground clearance. However, the Honda HR-V has the least ground clearance in its class. The C-HR does have some striking elements to it, and some of them are:

  • 17/18 inch wheels
  • Keyless entry
  • Adaptive LED lights
  • Two-tone paint
  • Chrome and piano black exterior trim

Safety
6.0/10

In the case of the 2019 Toyota C-HR, the NHTSA rates it an overall safety rating of 5 stars for its crashworthiness, and the IIHS awarded it a ‘Good’ rating in most of the crash ratings. The crossover comes standard with a lot of driver-assist features like automatic high beams, brake hold, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and lane-keeping assist. It is also loaded with Toyota’s trust and years of experience in making some of the safest vehicles on road, which can be backed up by:

  • Toyota Safety Sense
  • Pre-collision system with pedestrian detection
  • Lane departure alert with steering assist
  • Automatic high beams
  •  Dynamic radar cruise control
  • Ten airbags
  • Blind-spot monitoring system
  • Rear cross-traffic alert

2019 Toyota C-HR vs 2019 Subaru Crosstrek

The Subaru Crosstrek is better than the Toyota C-HR in every aspect. It has better performance, fuel economy, and large cargo space. Also, the price of this car is similar to that of the C-HR. But, the Toyota C-HR may be more pleasing design-wise and has better ride quality than the Subaru when it comes to powertrain optimization and suspension.

2019 Toyota C-HR vs 2019 Hyundai Kona

The Hyundai Kona seems to be the best in the class with its aggressive pricing but the interiors aren’t great nor is the feature list. The braking is dismal and despite the lighter weight, which gives a clear edge to the rivals. On all other aspects, the Kona is very similar to the C-HR but the lack of the above-mentioned features does have an impact on the buying decisions.

2019 Toyota C-HR vs 2019 Honda HR-V

The Honda HR-V and the Toyota C-HR are similar in many aspects. They have somewhat similar interiors, features, etc. But Honda does it slightly better in every aspect. Also, Honda’s reliability is one of the key aspects that make this car much value for money. So, the Honda HR-V could be a better choice here.

Final Verdict

The Toyota C-HR is one of the unique-looking crossovers in the market. It has decent interiors, fuel economy, and performance. It has better handling than its rivals. But, if it wants to get more customer attention then Toyota has to work on improving the overall car. So, if you are a person that cares more about looks than practicality then the 2019 Toyota C-HR may be the right choice for you.
