Overview

For the subcompact sedan segment, Hyundai has been offering the Accent for a long time now. It is one of the most reliable and affordable cars in the segment. Moreover, it is loved for its ride quality and performance that it once showcased in the WRC. The Accent is a perfect sedan for the ones who want an affordable commuter with decent fuel economy.

Buying Advice

As it is a budget sedan, you can easily choose the ideal trim for you. The two trims differentiate with a slim list of features. The base trim is offered with a manual transmission at $14,745 where you can avail of the automatic for $1,000 more. If we talk rationally, for $16,450, the namesake Value Edition trim does make sense. It offers 16-inch alloys, standard automatic transmission, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity, and four-wheel disc brakes which are comparatively better.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2017 Hyundai Accent is the last model of the fifth generation. With a budget-friendly base trim, Hyundai added a Value Edition trim with many required features. It has a starting price of $14,745. With a sharp design and a practical space, the 2017 Accent will compete with the likes of Chevrolet Sonic, Kia Rio, and the Ford Fiesta.

Features
5.0/10

Being an entry-level sedan, the 2017 Hyundai Accent is available in just two trim levels. The base SE trim is offered with a manual transmission, whereas the automatic transmission is optional. With limited features, you get a 14-inch steel wheel, a tilt steering wheel, and a SiriusXM radio. For better features, the Value Edition has joined the lineup for the 2017 MY. This one adds stylish 16-inch alloy wheels, a cruise control, and a standard sequential-shift automatic transmission. You also get better braking performance with four-wheel disc brakes.

Engine and Performance
8.5/10

The 2017 Hyundai Accent isn't that economical as it seems. For daily driving, it offers a refined 1.6L DOHC 4 cylinder. With its 137 hp power at 6,300 RPM and 123 lb-ft torque, the Accent has a satisfactory throttle response, considering its segment. Still, you cannot expect an entry-level sedan to deliver crazy performance numbers. The engine is either mated to a 6-Speed manual transmission or a 6-Speed automatic transmission with sequential shift control. So, you have a clutchless automatic with the thrill of manual shifting. The Accent sprints from 0-60 MPH in 8.9 seconds, where it reaches a quarter-mile in 16.7 seconds. It has a top speed of 120 MPH, which is not the best figure in the competition.

The Hyundai Accent ties with the cheaper Kia Rio in terms of performance as they have identical powertrains. The expensive Chevrolet Sonic offers similar power output, but it has much better acceleration and performance. And then we have the cheapest sedan of the lineup, the Ford Fiesta, which has an underpowered engine and is the slowest car in the segment. When comparing the top speed, again Chevrolet Sonic is the fastest at 122 mph.

How well does the 2017 Hyundai Accent handle?

The Hyundai Accent handles better than most of its rivals. Still, it is not made for performance driving. You may get good results from steering around the corners, but it could have been better. Some may recommend the Accent for its mild sporty handling. With its front strut and torsion beam rear suspension, it offers a surprisingly comfortable ride. As the powertrain is already refined, you have a quiet and nimble ride. The stability control and the traction control will keep you away from trouble at high speeds.

Braking Performance

For a budget sedan, the Accent offers decent braking. The base SE trim gets ventilated disc brakes up front and rear drums with 4-wheel ABS and brake assistance. The Value Edition trim gets better braking with 4-wheel disc brakes with hill hold control. The Accent with manual transmission weighs 2,480 pounds and stops in 115 feet of distance from 60 MPH. With its 2,546 pounds weight, the automatic Value Edition with its 4-wheel discs stops at 112 feet from 60 MPH.

In terms of braking performance, the Accent stops the fastest with its less weight and strong braking performance. It is followed by the Kia Rio, which is similar to Accent both in terms of weight and braking. The Ford Fiesta and the Chevrolet Sonic are comparatively heavy and stop at greater distances, where the Fiesta stops quicker than the Sonic. When comparing the curb weight, the Chevrolet Sonic is the heaviest and that shows in its stopping distance.

Fuel Economy
8.6/10

The budget segment cars are expected to deliver an extraordinary economy with their average power output. With its D-CVVT technology, the Accent offers optimum performance with proper refinement and efficiency. You can even switch to ECO mode for better mileage. The manual transmission allows the Accent to deliver an impressive 27 MPG in the city, 37 MPG on the highway, and a combined 21 MPG. With the 6-Speed Shiftronic automatic, it offers an almost similar economy. As it has an 11.4-gallon tank, you get a good range as well with 421.8 highway miles on a full tank of gas.

As compared to the rivals, the Hyundai Accent has the best in class fuel economy. It is even better than the Ford Fiesta and the Chevrolet Sonic. The Kia Rio offers a similar economy. Still, the rivals can match the Accent in terms of range as they offer bigger fuel tanks. The Fiesta gets ahead in terms of range with its 12.4-gallon fuel tank, whereas the Chevrolet Sonic stays slightly behind with a fuel tank of 12.2 gallons.

Interior
8.5/10

With the 2017 Hyundai Accent, we get a stylish cabin and an amazing build quality. For $14,000, Hyundai did a great job, whereas the rivals offer cheap quality. You can either avail a beige or grey interior trim. The spacious cabin looks sporty with metal-look accents. You also have proper space for up to 5 passengers. Just like most Hyundai cars, the Accent has a sliding dashboard layout that integrates the center console with the instrument panel. The dual-tone dash gets a busy center console with a digital screen and multiple knob controls. The informative gauge cluster offers a display as well. With the Value Edition trim, you also get steering-mounted controls.

Both trims of the Hyundai Accent offer cloth upholstery as standard. With the front bucket seats, you get a 6-way driver and 4-way passenger manual adjustments. At the back, you have a 60:40 split-bench seat with foldable functions to expand cargo space. Still, the 13.7 cubic feet trunk is good enough for your holiday luggage. The base SE trim offers limited features such as a tilt steering wheel, manual air-conditioning, and fade to off interior lighting. The Value Edition trim adds features such as cruise control, a day-night rearview mirror, automatic power door locks, covered storage spaces with an overhead console, and a 12V DC outlet.

The Hyundai Accent is quite practical in terms of seating and space. Rivals like Kia Rio and the Ford Fiesta offer better and comfortable seating but only for the front passengers. As for the Chevrolet Sonic, it steals the thunder of the Accent with its more practical rear row seating as it offers better headroom and legroom for the passengers at the back. Also, the Sonic offers a bigger trunk space than the Hyundai Accent. Standout interior features include:

  • Metal-look interior accents
  • Steering wheel mounted control
  • Informative gauge cluster with a display
  • Cruise control
  • Fade to off interior lighting
  • Foldable rear bench seat

What's there to keep you entertained?

As the Hyundai Accent is an entry-level sedan, it is a bit shy when it comes to entertainment and connectivity. You have a small LCD at the center that connects you with multimedia features such as an AM/FM radio, MP3 player with a USB and input jack. There's a SiriusXM radio subscription as well. The in-dash CD player allows you to play your mix CDs and old jams. With the Value Edition trim, it adds Bluetooth connectivity and iPod integration to the infotainment. Moreover, you get a decent enough 6-speaker sound system as standard. Highlight infotainment features include:

  • SiriusXM radio
  • CD player
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • iPod integration
  • 6 speakers

Exterior
8.5/10

The 2017 Hyundai Accent is the most appealing budget sedan in the segment. With its sharp design lines and modern appearance, the 2017 Accent looks great. The fourth-generation model was a major upgrade from a simple design to a fluidic new design. With the Value Edition trim, you get better exterior features. What attracts the most is its huge headlamps that slope down with the sliding hood design. You have a chrome bar on the signature grille and a center air dam placed below it. There are sleek fog lamps that are offered with the Value Edition trim. With its design lines on the side, the Accent gets a slightly lifted back appearance.

From the rear, the Accent looks more sporty with those sharp tail lamps and a lip spoiler over the trunk. As for the wheels, the SE trim gets 14-inch steel wheels with silver covers in its base trim. The Value Edition trim offers stylish 16-inch silver painted alloy wheels. The stylish and sporty Hyundai Accent is the best-looking sedan you can have in its price range. It weighs comparatively lower than the rivals but has nearly identical dimensions. The Chevrolet Sonic gives close competition to the Accent in terms of appearance and design. With a high ground clearance and a long wheelbase, the Accent ensures both comfort and balance over different road conditions. Standout exterior features include:

  • 10 Exterior color options
  • Automatic halogen headlamps
  • Signature grille with chrome bar
  • Fog lamps
  • 16-inch silver painted alloy wheels

Safety
4.4/10

With the fourth-generation Accent, Hyundai claims a lightweight high-strength steel structure that provides both handling and balance. The aerodynamic design of the car ensures the lowest in its class drag coefficient. However, it received poor safety ratings from both NHTSA and IIHS, which is a turnoff for the ones expecting safety. However, we have a few active and passive safety features with the Accent. With six standard airbags, you get brake assistance, electronic brake-force distribution, electronic stability control with traction control, and hill start assist. The list of safety features is quite average for its class, still, some advanced safety tech would have been nice. Standout safety features include:

  • High-strength steel structure
  • 6 standard airbags
  • Brake assistance
  • Electronic brake-force distribution
  • Hill-start assist

Competition

2017 Hyundai Accent vs 2017 Chevrolet Sonic

Chevrolet uses a more practical approach as the Sonic is comparatively spacious and puts better performance numbers on the table. Also, the trim lineup is bigger where you get better convenience and safety features. The Hyundai Accent is still a cheaper alternative with better design and quality. You even have the best-in-class economy with the Accent that makes it the most economical car in the segment.

2017 Hyundai Accent vs 2017 Kia Rio

The Kia Rio is identical to the Hyundai Accent in most aspects. It delivers similar performance and economy. However, the Accent is much better in terms of design and space. With the Value Edition trim, you get various convenience features as well. The Kia Rio is a bit too economical in the same price range. It works in the favor of the Hyundai Accent, as with just two trims, it offers an unmatchable value.

2017 Hyundai Accent vs 2017 Ford Fiesta

The Ford Fiesta is way behind the Hyundai Accent in terms of value and power output. Although it is more affordable and economical than the Accent. However, with its Titanium trim, it adds premium features for $18,000. Also, it offers technology and convenience, which is way above the level of Hyundai Accent. Between the two, if you want a bit more convenience with your car, you can go with the Titanium trim of the Fiesta, otherwise, the Hyundai Accent will work decently.

Final Verdict

The Hyundai Accent is another economical car by Hyundai which is doing great in the American market despite its limited features. For the ones who want a sweet ride for the city, you should go for the 2017 Hyundai Accent. However, the questionable safety affects its reputation. Regardless, what makes it special though is its lightweight structure that provides both strength and aerodynamical superiority. In its segment, it is one of the sharpest-looking sedans. So if you are willing to compromise on safety and want to acquire more value for less money, then the Accent is perfect for you.

              This is my car

Pros - ["Good mileage", "Serious xm radio", "Control over headlights"]

Cons - ["Too compact", "Not a hatchback", "Don't care for the color"]

My car was not picked by myself. I don't care for the low front bumper. If I won the lottery I would pay this car off and trade it in for another. I wish it had more features. Such as a back up camera and a hatchback.

Hyundai Accent: Reliable, Affordable, and An Easy Ride.

Pros - ["The car is great on gas and I have gotten up to 43 miles mpg. Your average mile range after filling up is between 350-400.", "The car drives smooth and handles well. Even though it is a compact sedan, the car withstands weather conditions, road conditions, and other drivers as well."]

Cons - ["The car can go through oil more than other sedans similar in size and makeup.", "The car's seats are not accommodating for people over 6 foot tall. It is a compact sedan and that has to be considered if you are 6 foot and up."]

My Hyundai Accent has proved to be reliable, affordable, and an overall easy ride in more than a few ways. From buying my Accent with 14k miles on it and currently having 78k on it, it has had no major issues. Other than regular maintenance (brakes, rotors, tires, oil changes), I've had a recall fixed. Another way the Accent screams reliability is the miles per gallon. At it's best, I've gotten m...

              Great reliable car

Pros - ["Doesn't break down", "Great gas milage and turning ratio", "Good acceleration"]

Cons - ["Plastic parts", "No spare tire", "No cruise control"]

My kids have crashed this car several times and it still runs great. It's got 150,000 miles and still going strong. I plan to buy a similar model when this one dies. Great cat which I never would have guessed when I bought it.
