Overview

The best-selling compact 2017 Nissan Rogue SUV has undergone a major revamp that now includes new trim packages, redesigned exterior and interior setups, and many more standard feature additions all for a starting price of MSRP $23,820. Vying with rivals such as the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and the Mazda CX-5 for the ultimate best-in-class honor, the Rogue did have some drawbacks up until 2017 that kept it away from being the best. Powertrain duties are still looked after by a standard 170 hp 2.5L Inline-4. This is apart from the newly introduced 2017 Nissan Rogue hybrid, which sports a 141 hp 2.0L Inline-4 engine, along with a 40 hp electric motor.

Buying Advice

The base variant does not have much to offer while moving to the hybrid side they are more functional, powerful, efficient and costly as well. The SV variant with the all-wheel-drive offers some advanced convenient features with 5 different package options available. It gets a long list of equipment as standard that you won’t be looking for much additions in the car.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The Rogue's success rests in its intriguing styling in a sea of bland-looking crossovers and a size advantage over most competitors - Car and Driver

Slotted below the other Nissan heavyweights such as the Pathfinder and Armada, the 2017 Rogue succeeds in offering a fresh perspective for buyers looking for their premium daily driver in the compact SUV class. The Nissan Rogue looks extremely great on the outside and even better on the inside with segment-leading cabin space. With a myriad of feature choices, especially on the safety front and along with a consumer-friendly price tag, the 2017 Rogue is well worth your time.

Nissan extensively redesigns the Rogue after a long gap with a new V-motion grille inculcated within the front fascia, and again extensively redesigning the rear fascia with the new LED taillights and revised tailgate design. Available in three different trims, Nissan also offers some optionally available features through new Platinum packages. Plus it is priced competitively too within the segment.

Features
7.0/10

The new refreshed 2017 Rogue has a total of three premium trim levels, namely S, SV, and SL with prices ranging from an MSRP of $24,420 to $31,310 for the top-end trim. These trims are also available with the hybrid variant, with the SV hybrid starting from $26,240, while the SL hybrid comes in at $31,160. All of the said trims will be powered by a standard 2.5L NA Inline-4 engine coupled with an XTronic CVT that sends power to either the front wheels or for an extra $1350 to all the wheels.

Including the variety of features added to the 2017 Nissan Rogue, the standard variant S now gets LED daytime running lights, Drive assist Display, and SiriusXM Satellite Radio. Further coming to the top-most trim, the SL now features an even more advanced infotainment system with Navigation, plus with the new Platinum package on offer, the SL trim is filled with a host of tech features.

Trim S SV SL
MSRP (FWD) $24,420 $25,640 $30,360
MSRP (AWD) $25,770 $26,990 $31,710
Key Features LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL) Power heated outside mirrors with LED turn signal indicators Motion Activated Liftgate
SiriusXM Satellite Radio Dual-Zone Automatic Temperature Control NissanConnectSM with Navigation, Mobile Apps, and Services
Advanced Drive-Assist Display Nissan Intelligent Key with Push Button Ignition Bose Premium Audio System with nine speakers, including two subwoofers

We Recommend

We'd recommend you opt for the SV trim, which comes at a competitive price of MSRP $25,640. We say this because the base S variant does not have much to offer and while moving to the hybrid side they might be more functional, powerful, and efficient, but costly as well. The SV variant with the all-wheel-drive offers some advanced convenient features with 5 different package options available.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The one thing that made the Nissan Rogue stand out in this compact SUV segment is its best-in-class fuel economy. The 2017 Rogue, even with the 2.5L Inline-4 engine crunching numbers on the performance side, is able to deliver 26 MPG in the city and about 33 miles to the gallon out on the highway. Whereas the 2017 Rogue hybrid, on the other hand, delivers 33 MPG in the city and 35 on the highway with the FWD setup, whereas the AWD brings the number down by 1 MPG.

It also has a decent 14.5-gallon fuel tank, which when consumed is able to stretch up to 479 miles on the go. Now, onto the competition at hand, Mazda CX-5, even with the segment-best power figures, delivers decent fuel economy, which is quite impressive.

Interior
8.0/10

The Rogue's interior utilizes quality materials that are well assembled. Plastics are soft to the touch, and leather surfaces feel genuine - Edmunds

2017 Nissan Rogue Seating & Comfort

The Nissan Rogue is well known for its best-in-class interior and comfort. On top of it, Nissan also found it in themselves to minutely update its interior space, with many more creature comforts. Placed in the compact crossover segment, the Nissan Rogue has by far one of the best interior spaces in this class, with premium touches all around. Following its segment longest 106.5-inch wheelbase, it only goes onto show that the Rogue has the most spacious cabin of them all.

Being able to seat 3 average-sized adults in the rear easily is not something the other SUVs can be proud of, but the Rogue does take pride in it. Moreover, it is not only spacious or comfortable but is versatile too, as it is a 5-seater 4-door compact SUV, which has a 6-way manual driver and 4-way manual passenger bucket seats with split-folding rear seats and a center armrest (foldable).

The interiors are wrapped with cloth upholstery with lots of high-quality soft-touch materials, keeping controls within one hand's reach, which makes them accessible and a lot more functional. All the SUVs in this segment have more or less decent cabin space, and it becomes hard to nit-pick faults in them as they've been ultimately made to cater to the family itself.

2017 Nissan Rogue Infotainment System

Nissan updates the center console fully for the 2017 Rogue, and that includes the infotainment system. The Nissan Rogue's base trim comes standard with a 5.0-inch infotainment display with Bluetooth connectivity, but no Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as well which is really disappointing. The upper trims of the Rogue now get a 7-inch system.

Well, Nissan has made a few upgrades in their infotainment system as it is more user-friendly and has better graphics than ever. It features a 4-speaker set, AM/FM stereo, satellite radio, Auxiliary Audio Input, and USB connection with Bluetooth connectivity. It might not be the best you can get at this price but for the daily commute, this is more than enough.

2017 Nissan Rogue Cargo Space

The 2017 Nissan Rogue has a decent 32.0 cu. ft of cargo space with the rear seats upright. This space increases to 70.0 cu. ft when the rear seats are folded down in a 60/40 manner. Coming to the hybrid Rogue on offer, despite the battery pack in place, Nissan offers an astonishing 31.8 cu.ft of cargo space with the rear seats up.

The Rogue has a wide cargo opening and has a multi-utility boot space area for your daily cargo purposes. The 2017 Rogue has also got a motion-activated liftgate, that makes loading and unloading of cargo much easier with much manual labor. Coming to the competition, the Honda CR-V has the best-in-class cargo space at 39.2 cu. ft.

The Rogue doesn't go out of its way to shock or awe crossover-SUV shoppers -CarConnection

The 2017 Nissan Rogue has been put through a major revamp this year which allows it to leave the Altima in its trail, as the best-selling Nissan this year. In fact, the Rogue SUV is the only one that has undergone a major upgrade amongst the other compact SUVs in the segment, which gives it a further advantage. Both the front and rear fascia gets redesigned as Nissan redesigns the front grill in a V-Motion theme, along with new LED DRLs around the corners.

Coming to the rear end, the 2017 Rogue gets a new lease to life, with a multifunction tailgate with motion-activated opening, and reworked taillights. Character lines along the side profile are now more visible than ever, and the same goes for chrome accents too. Standard 17 and 18-inch wheels are also offered now but with the addition of new 19-inch ones up for grabs, although only through the Platinum package.

When it comes to dimensions, the 2017 Rogue is one of the lightest of the lot, although that amounts to no use when it comes to outright acceleration prowess. It also has the largest wheelbase in the segment, which means that it also has a bigger cabin space compared to the competition. Moreover, the segment-best 7.8-inch ground clearance does make off-roading possible too.

Safety
7.0/10

Nissan has always rendered its cars to the utmost safety prowess, and so the 2017 Rogue is one such example of that. The 2017 Nissan Rogue did not only get a spectacular 4/5 stars from NHTSA's crash tests but it was also honored with IIHS' "Top Safety Pick+" award, which deems it to be one of the safest vehicles out on the road. It is right up there with the other Toyota RAV4 compact SUV in terms of safety quotient. For 2017, Nissan has updated the safety feature list of the Rogue with the latest Safety Shield tech.

Some of the latest safety features included are-

  • Blind Spot Warning
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Lane Departure Prevention
  • Intelligent Cruise Control
  • Forward Collision Warning with Pedestrian detection

Competition

2017 Toyota RAV4 vs 2017 Nissan Rogue

Perhaps one of the aptest competition to the 2017 Nissan Rogue, the Toyota RAV4 is set in its own way with the best in class acceleration figures, cabin space, safety quotient, and much more. The 6-speed automatic in the Rogue is much more versatile in putting the power down than the XTronic CVT in the RAV4.

In hindsight, the Toyota RAV4 is just $10 cheaper than the Nissan Rogue but is much more worthy to be chosen as a daily driver when compared to the Rogue.

2017 Mazda CX-5 vs 2017 Nissan Rogue

The 2017 Mazda CX-5 is the most powerful offering in the whole compact SUV segment but fails to impress us with its uninspired driving dynamics. Being a daily driver, the CX-5 is more on the sportier side than being used for daily commute.

Nevertheless, coming to the looks of the SUV, the CX-5 is more aggressive with a sportier body and has a more premium interior. Now the choice boils down to the buyer themselves, as to what they'd prefer.

Final Verdict

The 2017 Nissan Rogue is an ideal daily family commute SUV that is comfortable, is fuel-efficient, has a low cost of ownership, and is reliable as well as versatile, to say the least. For the starting price of $24,420, it is much more affordable than the majority of SUVs in the segment. It can help you cater to your daily chores, tow loads and also gets absolutely dirty when required. Disadvantages to the extent of low power figures and dismal acceleration numbers are the only thorn in the otherwise great deal.
