Overview

The Jeep Compass has been completely redesigned for 2021 and is available for sale with its price ranging between $20,995 and $28,995. Its trims include Sport, Latitude, Trailhawk, and Limited. It gets a new powertrain this year which is a 180-hp 2.4L four-cylinder engine that can accelerate from 0-60 MPH in 8.5 seconds. Although acceleration is meager, this SUV is rather known for off-roading while fuel economy is also pretty decent.

The cabin of the Compass gets a new minimalistic layout loaded with lots of features. It offers a spacious cabin but is not practical as its rivals. Unlike the old model, the new Compass has earned great safety ratings and packs the latest safety tech but none of them are standard. In the competitive compact SUV segment, the Compass gets stiff rivalry from the Mazda CX-5, the Ford Escape, and the Chevrolet Equinox

Buying Advice

The Sport trim is the best choice for those people who don't prefer off-roading. This trim adds a lot of features for a base model. We also recommend buying the $895 Tech Group package that adds a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, SiriusXM, 115V power outlet, a 7-inch driver's display, dual-zone automatic climate control, and remote engine start.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The all-new 2017 Compass does much more than clear the low bar of being better than its predecessor- Kelly Blue Book

The all-new Jeep Compass is back with completely new styling, both outside and inside. The new powertrain setup doesn't change the fact that it has sluggish acceleration. The interior still feels cheap in some places. The main plus point of this SUV is its infotainment system, which offers more features than other compact SUVs. Another feature worth noting is its commendable safety ratings.

Owning a Compass is pretty affordable as its ownership costs are considerably low than many of its class rivals. It costs close to $6,500 every year for its maintenance, repairs, fuel, etc. The average cost per mile is $0.43, thanks to its fuel-efficient engine. However, its reliability rating is pretty low in its class which is one of the main reasons for its unpopularity and low sales.

Features
5.0/10

Even base models offer a competitive set of standard features- Carfax

The all-new Jeep Compass comes in four trims which include Sport, Latitude, Trailhawk, and Limited. The base Sport has its price fixed at $20,995 while the top-most Limited trim costs nearly $29,000, excluding a $1,095 destination charge. Both FWD and 4WD drivetrains are available except for the Trailhawk and Limited trims that exclusively come in 4WD configuration only. The feature list is pretty elaborate in the Compass.

Even the base Sport model offers a lot of standard features such as dual-zone automatic climate control, a 5-inch touchscreen display, 16-inch steel wheels, a 6-speaker sound system, and many more. There are several optional packages available too. The Advanced Safety and Lighting Group adds full-speed forward collision warning, lane departure warning, advanced brake assist, auto-dimming rearview mirror, bi-xenon HID headlamps with auto high-beam assist.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

Fuel economy is near the top of the segment, with all-wheel-drive automatic models- MotorTrend

Although the all-new Jeep Compass has seen an increase in power, the fuel economy is more or less the same, which is really impressive. In the city, it returns 23 MPG while the highway mileage is estimated to be 32 MPG. A combined mileage of 26 MPG is obtained when using a manual transmission.

Switch to a 6-speed automatic and the MPG figures drop down by 1 MPG. The 4WD models don't drink much fuel and have a combined MPG of 25. Owing to the 13.5-gallon fuel tank, the Compass can drive up to 371 miles in its FWD guise while the 4WD models reduce that number to 351 miles.

Models 2017 Jeep Compass 2017 Ford Escape 2017 Chevrolet Equinox 2017 Mazda CX-5

Range (City/ Highway/ Combined; Miles) 311/432/371 330/455/392 414/602/508 355/459/407

The Mazda CX-5's fuel ratings are almost the same as the Compass but the former's larger tank contributes to a better driving range. The Ford Escape stands in third place as it returns only 24 MPG combined while the Chevy Equinox is the least fuel-efficient vehicle here, though it shares the same MP figures with the Compass.

2017 Jeep Compass Seating and Comfort

The interior of the all-new Jeep Compass has been redesigned and is now crafted with loads of soft-touch materials. That said, there are some hard plastics found on the door panel. The design of the dashboard is boring but at the time quite utilitarian. All five seats are dressed in cloth on lower trims while higher versions get leather-trimmed seats. The front seats are comfortable, supportive, and are well-cushioned. An 8-way power driver's seat with a heated function is reserved only for the top-end Limited trim.

Passenger space is great in the front row. Even the rear-seat occupants will enjoy a good amount of leg and knee room. Though, the short overall height means headroom will be restricted for taller people. The rear seats also feel comfortable as the seatback is set at a good angle while there's ample under-thigh support too. Seating a third person could be an issue due to the contour of the seat bottom and the transmission tunnel. There are rear vents that are slightly lower mounted for the rear passengers too.

The Chevrolet Equinox has the most spacious rear row in this competition. The Ford Escape offers the least legroom for the rear occupants. On the other hand, the Mazda CX-5 offers slightly rear head and legroom than the Compass. Speaking of interior quality, the CX-5'cabin has a better fit and finish in this competition.

2017 Jeep Compass Infotainment System

The base Sport trim comes with a Uconnect 5 infotainment system that includes a 5-inch touchscreen display featuring Bluetooth connectivity, voice recognition, and a hands-free text message feature. However, it can be upgraded to a 7-inch touchscreen with SiriusXM, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay compatibility that runs on the updated Uconnect 7 interface. The Uconnect 8.4 system with an 8.4-inch touchscreen display is only standard on the Trailhawk and Limited trims.

This system features an integrated voice-activated navigation system, Siri Eyes Free, traffic, and weather updates. A 6-speaker sound system is standard on all trim levels. Irrespective of the screen size, the layout is clean and simple but response times are laggy. The buttons and knobs present below the screen make it easy to change the settings. Even the smallest screen support pinch-to-zoom gesture, which is really cool. The intuitive interface makes it easy to use.

2017 Jeep Compass Interior Features

The cabin highlights of the Compass are mentioned below:

  • Tilt & telescopic multi-function leather steering wheel
  • 8-way power driver's seat with 4-way power lumbar support
  • Heated front seats
  • Cloth & leather upholstery
  • Push-button start
  • Remote engine start
  • 5-inch touchscreen display
  • 8.4-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • 6-speaker sound system

2017 Jeep Compass Cargo Capacity

Cargo capacity is not the strongest point in the Jeep Compass. It offers 27.2 cubic feet of cargo space that's small for a compact SUV but good for a sub-compact SUV. Either way, this is a decent way to pack your gear. Thanks to the 60/40 split-seat function, the rear seats fold to give 59.8 cubic feet.

The rear seats do not fold completely flat on this vehicle. Therefore, carrying long items would not be a great idea. Unfortunately, a power tailgate is offered even on the top-most Limited trim, which is kind of disappointing. Also, the high loading lip of this vehicle can make things challenging while putting things into the cargo area.

Models 2017 Jeep Compass 2017 Ford Escape 2017 Chevrolet Equinox 2017 Mazda CX-5
Cargo Capacity (cu-ft.) 27.2 34.0 31.5 30.9

With a maximum cargo space of 67.8 cubic feet, the Ford Escape is the clear winner here. The Chevrolet Equinox comes in second with 63.7 cubic feet. The cargo volume of the Mazda CX-5 is almost similar to the Compass which is 59.6 cubic feet. Also, all these rivals offer an available power tailgate too.

2017 Jeep Compass Dimensions and Weight

With a complete exterior redesign this year, the all-new Jeep Compass is a great-looking SUV and it does look like a smaller Grand Cherokee. Jeep hasn't gone overboard with chrome, giving the Compass a clean look. The iconic seven slat grille is finished in gloss black with chrome surrounds. The quad headlights setup has a three-dimensional look and also comes with a cornering function. The Compass sits on 16-inch wheels that feel small for an SUV of this size but has a high ground clearance that is perfect for exploring off-road.

The wheelbase of the Compass is comparatively short in its segment but that doesn't compromise on the interior room. The wide and squared-out wheel arches are the hallmarks of every Jeep product in the past and that is what gives the Compass that muscular hunker-down look. Also, from the side view, there is a small piece of chrome that runs from the A-pillar all the way across the car to the C-pillar and then swoops down right into the tailgate. Around the back, the 3D taillamps are unique and eye-catching.

Track width (in) F/R 60.7/60.3 61.5/61.6 62.9/62.1 62.8/62.8

The Chevrolet Equinox's wheelbase is the widest here, measuring at least 9 inches more than the Compass. Although both SUVs have similar cabin space, the wide wheelbase also helps to offer a stable and comfortable ride. The low ground clearance of the Mazda CX-5 will benefit in its driving dynamics, especially handling abilities. The extra weight is the reason the Ford Escape trails behind the Compass in terms of performance.

2017 Jeep Compass Exterior Features

Some main highlights of the Compass's exterior are:

  • Cornering quad headlights
  • Cornering fog lamps
  • Halogen DRLs
  • Exterior entry lights
  • Power & heated exterior mirrors
  • Body-colored door handles
  • Dual exhaust chrome tips
  • Black grille with chrome accents
  • Chrome headlamp bezel
  • Chrome window trim
  • Front & rear skid plates
  • Chrome roof rails
  • 16-inch polished aluminum wheels

Safety
7.1/10

The expected high-tech safety equipment is available, but not standard on any model- The Car Connection

The 2017 Jeep Compass received decent ratings by NHTSA. A 4-star overall safety rating was given to the Compass. In detail, it scored 3 stars for the front crash test, 5 stars for the side crash test, and 4 stars in the rollover crash test. The front crash prevention is not that great in the Compass but the side and rollover crash prevention is good.

NHTSA Rating

Overall rating 4 stars
Overall frontal barrier crash rating 3 stars
Frontal barrier crash rating driver 3 stars
Overall side crash rating 5 stars
Side barrier rating 5 stars
Side pole rating driver front seat 5 stars
Combined side rating rear seat 5 stars
Rollover rating 4 stars
Side barrier rating driver 5 stars
Frontal barrier crash rating passenger 3 stars
Combined side rating front seat 5 stars
Side barrier rating passenger rear seat 5 stars

Unlike NHTSA, the Compass was well-received by IIHS. It was honored with the 'Top Safety Pick' award, which is considered the second-highest accolade from the agency. It received 'Good' ratings in all crash tests and a 'Superior' rating for front crash prevention. It also received the second-lowest 'Marginal' rating for its headlights.

IIHS Rating

Small overlap front driver side Good
Small overlap front passenger side Good
Moderate overlap front Good
Side Good
Roof strength Good
Head restraints & seats Good
Front crash prevention Superior
Headlights Marginal
Child seat anchors (LATCH) Poor

All these ratings prove the fact that the Jeep Compass is a safe vehicle. The seven airbags further increase the safety factor for the passengers. These airbags include dual front, front side, side curtain and driver's knee airbags. These airbags will protect the occupant's heads in the event of an accident.

The Compass also comes with a decent list of driver-assist features. These technologies can help prevent the risk of a crash. Some of them include:

  • Rearview Camera
  • Lane Departure Warning w/ Steering Assist
  • Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning
  • Blind Spot Monitoring
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Rear Parking Sensors
  • Brake Assist
  • Hill Descent Control

Competition
9.0/10

2017 Jeep Compass vs 2017 Ford Escape

The Ford Escape is nearly $2,700 costlier than the Compass but makes the least power in this competition. Hence, its performance is not much great but its driving dynamics are way better than the Compass. It's more power also burns more fuel. Also, the legroom in the rear row is slightly less than the Compass but its cargo space is one of the best in the segment. The Escape didn't win any award for its safety but packs a good list of features.

2017 Jeep Compass vs 2017 Chevrolet Equinox

The Chevy Equinox's initial price is a bit higher than the Compass. Although it makes similar power to the Compass, it displays a sluggish acceleration and the worst fuel efficiency in this segment. It gains some points as it offers a spacious rear row while its cargo capacity is also greater than the Compass. In view of safety, the Equinox's safety ratings are not that strong compared to the Compass and also packs fewer features.

2017 Jeep Compass vs 2017 Mazda CX-5

With a starting price of $24,045, the Mazda CX-5 is the most expensive car in this competition. It makes more power but still, its acceleration is not faster than the Compass. But, its fuel ratings are almost similar to the Compass. The CX-5 also offers more rear passenger space but its cargo capacity is the same as the Compass. Unlike the Compass, the CX-5 won the 'Top Safety Pick+' award for its safety, therefore a safer option.

Final Verdict

With a completely new design inside and outside, a new powertrain, and technological features, it is an attempt of Jeep to shine a light on the all-new Compass in the ever-competitive compact SUV segment. However, due to its poor reliability ratings, it ranks less than its rivals. But the Trailhawk has its rivals beat on mud, rocks, and trails. Also, considering America's insatiable appetite for high-riding vehicles, the tweener size Compass is going to fit right in.

              My favorite Jeep's

Pros - ["4wheel drive", "Because it is a jeep"]

Cons - ["No volume on the steering wheel for the radio", "Doesn't tell me how many miles I have left on my tank of gas"]

I am definitely a Jeep girl from the old square body style to today'ss style. Of today's style I like the grand Cherokee best. Of all the Cherokee's i like the square one best. But I also love the CJ 5 and CJ 7. Guess you could say I'm just a Jeep girl
