Certain features are pleasing, but the rivals offer a much better option overall. The Jeep Compass is no “flagship killer”, rather it emphasizes maintaining the Jeep legacy at a much lower price.
We highly recommend going for the Sport trim due to the better fuel efficiency of the two trims. The Sport SE adds some enhancements and we do recommend that package. There are other interior and convenience packages available as well. The Freedom Drive Off-Road II is a must on any Compass as well.
The 2016 Jeep Compass gets no major changes for the year 2016, and Bluetooth and satellite radio are now standard across all trims. The Compass’s best trait would be its off-road capabilities, and no car comes close to matching that. The 2016 Jeep Compass goes up against the 2016 Nissan Juke, the 2016 Buick Encore, and the 2016 Mazda CX-5.
This year, the limited trim has been scrapped off the Compass line-up with only the Sport and the Latitude trim levels available for sale. Pricing for the trims starts at $19,695 and goes up to $25,995. Standard features on both trims include alloy wheels, roof rails, foglights, air-conditioning, cruise control, manual accessories, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and a 4-speaker system.

The Sport trim gets a Sport SE package that adds gloss-gray body trim, 18-inch gray alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, cloth and vinyl upholstery, and heated front seats. The Latitude trim gets a High Altitude Edition that adds a sunroof, additional chrome exterior trim, 17-inch wheels, leather upholstery, and a six-way power driver seat with manual lumbar adjustment.

The 2016 Jeep Compass gets two engine options. The base engine is a 2.0L Inline-4 that makes 158 hp and 141 lb-ft of torque. The FWD is mandatory on this engine. The optional 2.4-liter Inline-4 engine outputs 172 horsepower and 165 ft-lbs. of torque. In the Sport trim, this engine is coupled with a 5-speed manual gear lever while in the Latitude trim it is coupled with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The Jeep Compass is available in FWD and AWD drivetrains.

Even with a bigger 2.4 Liter engine, the Compass lags behind the competition. It produces very little power and torque, which peaks out in the middle rpms. It does the 0-60 mph run in 9 seconds, only ahead of the Buick at 9.5 seconds. The Juke takes 6.6 seconds, and the CX-5 takes 7.8 seconds. The quarter-mile also comes up on the Compass in a slow 16.8 seconds.
The 2016 Jeep Compass with the 2.0L engine returns a fuel efficiency of 23 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highway, and 26 mpg combined. The 2.5L engine returns 21 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 23 mpg combined. This drops even more with the AWD models. The car gets a tank capacity of 13.5 gallons.

The 2016 Compass has the least fuel efficiency among the four cars. The Juke is the most fuel-efficient car with a combined fuel efficiency of 28 mpg. The Buick and the Mazda both offer a fuel efficiency of 26 mpg combined. In terms of range, the Compass offers the least range at 270 city miles and 351 highway miles. The best range is seen on the Mazda thanks to its large tank capacity. The range stands at 367 city miles and 459 highway miles.
Inside the car is where you start to spot the difference between the Sport and Latitude trim levels. All Compass trims seat 5 people. The interiors got an update in 2014, but the interiors are still plasticky and cheap. The materials feel subpar, with the fit and finish lacking. The layout is pretty decent, but the inclusion of manual controls over simple power accessories is an unwelcoming feature.
In terms of seating, the front and rear rows are a world apart. The front rows offer great seating comfort and support, and the legroom is adequate. The rear is on the tighter side for this class, and not very comfortable as well. The doors are wide enough, so ingress and egress are not an issue. Also, visibility is good for all sides.

The Compass’s infotainment system is not the most user-friendly one in the market. The Sport trim does not get an infotainment screen as standard, but a 6.5-inch touchscreen is available. The design of the Compass is old now, but it still looks tough. It has a lot of similarities with the bigger Jeep Grand Cherokee. In terms of exterior design, the compass sports the Jeep signature grille in the front between the rectangular headlamps. The lower part gets small air intakes that actually direct cold air towards the engine. Strong blocky body lines from the front continue through the side of the car to the rear where it meets the small tail lamps. The rear of the car sports nothing specific: it’s rather clean and boring.

The Jeep Compass is a crossover SUV that comes in a rather compact package than a full-size 5-seater SUV. This crossover still manages to stay larger in dimensions than the Nissan Juke and Buick Encore. The Compass’s dimensions are similar to Mazda CX-5’s dimensions. The 2016 Jeep Compass does not fare well in crash-test ratings. It has lower safety ratings of 3-stars from the NHTSA, with 4-stars in rollover ratings. The 2016 Jeep Compass is a nice car. Yes, the Jeep is underpowered and also does not perform well in the department of fuel efficiency which is definitely a deal-breaker. The interiors are not great at all, with a very lowly infotainment system. It does not get decent safety scores as well. The alternatives are a much better option overall, and we would recommend those.

I am definitely a Jeep girl from the old square body style to today'ss style. Of today's style I like the grand Cherokee best. Of all the Cherokee's i like the square one best. But I also love the CJ 5 and CJ 7. Guess you could say I'm just a Jeep girl
