Overview

Hybrid cars are quickly getting into the scene as people want maximum mileage and reliability in their cars nowadays with minimum price. Many manufacturers are trying to bring new changes to their hybrid cars in order to improve their sales. Korean manufacturers like Hyundai and Kia are currently dominating this segment as they offer the latest technology, maximum safety, excellent reliability in their cars at a cheaper price. On that note, Hyundai had launched the Ioniq hybrid hatchback a few years back. The driving dynamics of the 2022 Ioniq Hybrid are very good. The acceleration is adequate but feels a bit slow after some time. However, it feels well balanced around corners. The handling is not very responsive but gets the job done. Being a hatchback, it is nimble and is very easy to handle in city traffic. The tires provide good grip even on slippery surfaces.

Buying Advice

We recommend you to go for the SE trim considering the number of features that it offers for the price. It is only $2000 more than the base Blue trim but gets you more creature comforts like Heated Front Seats, a Leather-wrapped steering wheel, and Hyundai’s Blue Link. However, if you have a higher budget then you can opt for the top-tier Limited trim.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Speaking of comfort, the suspension used in the front is MacPherson Strut and when it comes to the rear, it incorporates multi-link suspension as every other hatchback in the segment. Moreover, the Ioniq uses some clever technologies to keep the car in control at high-speed corners. Overall, the 2022 Ioniq Hybrid drives a lot like a regular car which would be suitable for daily commute. The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid is a two-row hatchback with its unique design and great fuel economy. 2022 Ioniq hybrid comes equipped with the same 1.6L Inline-4 cylinder engine with a hybrid unit that delivers unbelievable fuel economy. It rivals the likes of the Toyota Prius Hybrid, Kia Niro Hybrid, and Honda Insight Hybrid. Can the Ioniq Hybrid emerge as the top hybrid compact car for 2022 in the US?

Fuel Economy
9.0/10

The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid has impressive fuel economy. This is improved because of the larger and better battery packs announced by Hyundai. It provides 58 MPGe in the city, 60 MPGe on the highway, and 59 MPGe combined. The fuel economy is one of its biggest pros and is the reason why people prefer Ioniq over any other Hybrid. It comes equipped with an 11.9-gallon fuel tank and 1.56 kWh battery-powered hybrid unit which puts its driving range around 714 miles on the highway between each fillup. The hybrid system is functional up to 75mph and after that, the gas engine takes over completely. So to stay economical, don't push the throttle over 75mph.

The 2022 Ioniq Hybrid has the best MPG figures among the competition. Thanks to the large 11.9-gallon fuel tank, it has a better range than any of its rivals in the market. The bigger batteries do wonders to its mileage. The Kia Niro Hybrid has the worst fuel economy when compared to its competitors. Note that it comes equipped with the same engine as in the Ioniq So if you are a buyer who is looking for better mileage then the Ioniq Hybrid is the best choice for you.

Interior
6.0/10

Being a Hybrid vehicle it is environment friendly but it does not stop there. It gets carried in the interior as well. The materials used in the interior are also environmentally friendly. It uses soft plastic everywhere which is made from recycling old plastic and sugarcane fibers. This does not degrade the looks of the interior, however. The dashboard is curvy with chrome accents in the middle. The steering wheel feels nice to hold and it comes leather-wrapped in the SE trim. The AC vents are triangular-shaped and look unique. Moreover, it has a large infotainment system integrated into the center of the dashboard with the controls and buttons below it. All the buttons and controls are finished in good quality plastics too.

The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid seats 5 people in two rows. As standard, you get cloth upholstery, a six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control with the Blue trim. The SE trim offers you a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Moreover, the front seats come heated in the SE trim. The seats come wrapped in leather upholstery in the Limited trim.

Towards the back, the seats are cushioned as well. However, the middle seat on the rear can be left for children because it has less legroom. The low-slung roofline reduces some headroom. Also, the center-positioned battery eats up some legroom as well.

The Honda Insight Hybrid has an edge over its competition in terms of its interior passenger space but has very less cargo space than its competitors. The 2022 Ioniq Hybrid misses out on having better interior space because of its low-slung roofline. But it gets back into the game with its massive cargo space. The Kia Niro Hybrid also has less passenger space as well as less cargo space available. Standout interior features in the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid include:

  • 10-way power driver seat with lumbar support
  • 6-way passenger seat with seat height adjustment
  • Premium cloth seating
  • Leather seating surfaces
  • Heated front seats
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob
  • Dual-zone climate control

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid gets an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display. Going for the Limited trim gets you an upgraded 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment display. You would require some time to get used to the infotainment but once you know how to operate it is very easy to use. The infotainment unit is very responsive and does not lag at all. Moreover, it has Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity that will help you to connect your smartphone.

The infotainment unit includes HD and SiriusXM satellite radio. It also has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in its tech suite. The vehicle comes equipped with a 6 standard speaker setup which can be upgraded to an 8-speaker Harmon and Kardon sound system. Standout infotainment features in the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid are:

  • The 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display
  • 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment display (Limited trim only)
  • Apple Carplay and Android Auto
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • HD radio
  • 6-speaker standard audio system
  • Optional 8-speaker Harmon and Kardon Audio System
  • Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity
  • Bluelink technology

Exterior
6.0/10

The exterior of the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid remains unchanged as its outgoing model. The exterior design looks wedge-shaped because aerodynamics plays a key factor here. The low-slung roofline adds to the aesthetics and aerodynamics but takes away some of the rear headroom space. Moreover, the hood and the liftgate have been made from aluminum to save weight.

Coming to the front, the vehicle gets full-LED headlamps with integrated LED DRLs. The bumpers on the front are very sleek and the grille looks very appealing. Coming to the sides, you get 17-inch alloys as you go up the trim levels. In short, it looks elegant from the front and sportier from the back. Moreover, it is the lightest car in its segment measuring 2996 lbs of curb weight. Coming to length, it measures a length of 176 inches. When it comes to ground clearance, it is not the segment-leading but manages to offer a decent ground clearance of 5.3 inches.

The Honda Insight Hybrid is the largest amongst all but it is the worst in terms of its ground clearance alongside the Toyota Prius. On the flip side, being a tall car, the Niro has a better ground clearance than others. On the other hand, the 2022 Ioniq Hybrid is wider with a sporty stance. Some of the Standout exterior features include:

  • 17' Alloy Wheels (Limited trim)
  • Power Liftgate
  • Chrome Accents
  • LED Daytime running lights
  • Power tilt-and-slide sunroof
  • Variable Intermittent Wipers

Safety
9.9/10

It received a ‘superior’ rating for its frontal protection from IIHS. The build quality of Hyundai was never questionable. It is safe to say that it is one of the most equipped cars in terms of its standard safety features. Moreover, the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid comes with steel disc brakes on all four wheels. It comes with 11.0-inch rotors on the front and 10.3-inch rotors on the rear which are good enough to stop this vehicle at a decent distance.

Moreover, the braking system comes with ABS and EBD as standard. Along with that it also comes with automatic emergency braking for panic braking situations. Some of the standard safety features of the 2022 Ioniq Hybrid include anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control, front and rear parking sensors, front knee airbags, front and second-row airbags along full-length side curtain airbags. 2022 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid vs 2022 Toyota Prius Hybrid

The Toyota Prius Hybrid is the top contender to the Ioniq Hybrid. Hyundai offers better features than the Prius despite its lower price. The fuel economy is also excellent in the Ioniq. The Toyota lacks styling as well. Both offer excellent reliability. However, the warranty coverage is better on the Hyundai. So, the Ioniq Hybrid is a better option in terms of performance, mileage, and almost on every front.

2022 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid vs 2022 Kia Niro Hybrid

The Kia Niro Hybrid is below par in every department except performance. The Ioniq Hybrid does a much better job in all the other departments from fuel economy to braking performance. The interior and cargo capacity is also less which makes it less practical than the Ioniq. Between the two, Ioniq looks more elegant and offers a better economy. The Kia Niro doesn’t live up to the expectations and the Ioniq seems to be a better option of the two.

2022 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid vs 2022 Honda Insight Hybrid

The Ioniq Hybrid and the Honda Insight Hybrid are both very similar to each other. But, the Honda has an edge over the Ioniq in every way. It has a better powertrain with a powerful engine that produces more power. The Ioniq on the other hand delivers better fuel economy and better cargo capacity. So, the 2022 Ioniq Hybrid would be a better choice for you if fuel economy and practicality are important for you.

Final Verdict
7.1/10

The Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid is one of the best hybrid cars available in the market and is expected to remain unchanged for the 2022 model year. It looks elegant and sporty at the same time. Also, it is loaded with the latest features. It has a clean and well-appointed interior along with the best cargo storage. Furthermore, it offers impressive performance and the powertrain is so efficient. It also delivers the best fuel economy in the segment. In short, it is a complete package available at a relatively affordable price.
