Overview

Sometimes big surprises come in small packets and it is very true if we look at the Mini Hardtop 2 Door Hatchback. The unique exterior design makes you drool, a comfy interior that does not let you leave your seat, and precise handling which makes driving this small hatchback real fun, all these things make the Mini Hardtop 2 Door the ruler of its own realm. Filled with a number of standard features, Hardtop 2 Door is aiming high to please the masses.

Buying Advice

It would be wise if you go with the base Cooper trim. It has nearly all standard features given on the Mini Hardtop 2 door lineup and you can also opt for optional packages and features to uplift your experience. However, if you want a more punchy engine then you will have to climb the trim ladder.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Still having connections with the third Hardtop generation launched in 2014, the 2022 model has some interesting changes. With new front and rear fascia, grille, roof, and wheels from outside, and new steering wheel and standard 8.8-inch touchscreen from the inside is making Mini Hardtop 2 Door again a hot topic in the market. It is facing off against veterans of the Hatchback segment such as the Honda Civic hatchback and Volkswagen Golf GTI Hatchback. Mini Hardtop 2 Door Hatchback is also having cut-throat competition against the Hyundai Veloster hatchback

Features

There are three fundamental trims: Cooper, Cooper S, and John Cooper Works offered on the 2022 Mini Hardtop 2 door. All three trims can be further divided into Classic, Signature, and Iconic trims. The base Classic Cooper trim costs $22,900 but if you add $4000 you can get the Signature trim and for $8000 more, top-ranging Iconic trim will be yours. The same sub-trim upgrade cost is observed in the Cooper S trim. However, for the John Cooper Works trim, $3000 is required to get the Signature trim and $7000 for the Iconic trim.

The Cooper Classic offers standard features such as 15-inch alloy wheels, SiriusXM, HD radio, 8.8-inch touchscreen, leather-covered sports steering wheel, LED taillights, and Rear Park Distance Control. As you upgrade to Signature trim features such as a panoramic moonroof, 16-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry, and options 7-speed dual-clutch transmission is added. premium leather upholstery, 17-inch alloy wheels, Apple CarPlay, wireless charging, Harman/Kardon premium sound system, and heads-up display are offered on the Iconic trim.

2022 Mini Hardtop 2 Door Hatchback Release Date

The 2022 Mini Hardtop 2 door Hatchback is out. You can contact the nearest dealer for the booking.

Engine and Performance
9.1/10

Under the base Hardtop 2 Door, lies a 1.5-liter TwinPower turbocharged inline-3 motor which is coupled with a standard 6-speed manual transmission. It puts out 134 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque. This setup accelerates the Hardtop 2 Door from 0 to 60 mph in 7.6 seconds. However, if you want quicker acceleration then you will need the 2.0-liter TwinPower turbo inline-4 which is offered on the Cooper S trim and churns out 189 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque. These figures help this Mini hatchback reach 60 mph from a standstill 1.2 seconds faster than the base engine.

On the John Cooper Works trim, you get the same engine as it is in the Cooper S but its tuning is different which offers 228 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. With this arrangement, Hardtop 2 Door crossed the 60 mph mark in 5.9 seconds. FWD drivetrain is standard throughout the trim range and optional 7-speed DCT is also available on the Cooper and Cooper S trim but an optional 8-Speed Sport Automatic Transmission is given on the topmost trim. Coming to the driving experience, the Mini offers controlled handling. Because of its small size, it’s fun to drive in the city but if you wanna take it on rough terrain, you won’t be as pleased with its driving capabilities as you would expect.

With the help of a 1.6-liter turbo inline-4 motor which produces 201 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque, the Hyundai Veloster takes the first spot as the fastest car in the competition. Next in line is the opponent from the Volkswagen which houses a 2.0-liter turbo inline-4 which generates 39 hp and 51 lb-ft of torque more as compared to the Mini Hardtop 2 Door but ties with it in terms of acceleration timing. Lastly, with the smallest engine in the competition that puts out 180 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque, Honda Civic is trying to cross the 0-60 mph goal in 7.1 seconds and covers the quarter-mile distance in 15.3 seconds. Meanwhile, the Hyundai Veloster takes the least amount of time to cover the one-fourth mile distance in the competition.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

If the base engine is taken, the Mini returns a fuel economy of 27 mpg in the city, 37 mpg on the highway, and 31 mpg combined. But when the 2.0-liter motor is equipped then the fuel economy figures will drop by 4 mpg in the city, highway, and combined. However, there is a further decline in fuel efficiency in the John Cooper Works which gives 22/31/25 mpg in the city/highway/combined respectively. A fuel tank with 11.6 gallons of capacity is standard on all trims. That said, a combined mileage of 313 is offered by the 2022 Hardtop 2 Door.

In the city, the Mini Hardtop 2 Door is the least fuel-efficient but if we talk about the highway then the worst performance is observed in the Volkswagen Golf GTI. The most fuel-efficient car title goes to the Honda Civic which returns a combined fuel economy of 32 mpg. Furthermore, the biggest fuel tank belongs to the Hyundai Veloster but the same fuel storage capacity is also present in the Volkswagen Golf GTI. Coming to the mileage, the best highway mileage is provided by the Honda Civic but if we are talking about the city, the Hyundai Veloster has the lead. That said, the Mini Hardtop 2 Door has the worst mileage in the city and the highway.

Interior
9.1/10

2022 has introduced a newly designed steering wheel that is wrapped in leather and can be upgraded to Nappa leather heated steering wheel with an optional heating function. Dash and air vents have also been updated whereas the new MINI Ambient Light with 6 different colors adds more spice to the interior design. Carbon Black Leatherette upholstery is standard on the base trim but it can be replaced with the premium leather upholstery on the Iconic sub trim. If we look at the interior design, everything is well-organized and easy to reach. The seats are comfortable with great back support.

Front seats have 6-way manual adjustment. Heated front seats are offered on Signature trim and beyond. Rear seats can fold into a 40/60 pattern for convenience. Manual tilt and telescopic steering wheel, floor mats, a universal garage-door opener, and a front center armrest are some basic features on the base trim. Dual-zone climate control, keyless entry, and ambient lighting are offered on higher trims. Additionally, Sports seats and performance seats are offered on the Signature and the John Cooper Works trim respectively. Features such as a universal garage-door opener and anthracite headliner are optional.

Given its short wheelbase and length, it is obvious that the Mini Hardtop 2 Door has the smallest cabin in the segment but headroom in both rows is not very disappointing. Other than the Hyundai Veloster, other rivals have a seating capacity of 5. The most spacious cabin is offered on the Honda Civic which has the best shoulder room in the segment but the leading headroom in the second row is given on the Volkswagen Golf GTI. The biggest trunk is given on the Honda Civic while the smallest one is present in the concerned car of this article. Highlights of the interior features are:

  • Leatherette upholstery
  • central instrument with LED ring
  • leather-wrapped sport steering wheel
  • Heated front seats (optional)
  • Dual-Zone Automatic Climate Control (optional)
  • Ambient Lighting (optional)
  • Keyless entry

How intuitive is the car’s infotainment unit?

In 2022 Mini Hardtop 2 Door a standard 8.8-inch touchscreen is given on all the trims. It has crisp graphics and is easy to use. You also get SiriusXM, USB port, HD radio, Bluetooth, and a 6-speaker audio system which you can upgrade to a 12-speaker Harman/Kardon premium audio system. If you select the iconic sub trim then you will get Apple CarPlay, wireless charging, a navigation system, and a head-up display. Highlights of the infotainment unit:

  • 8.8-inch touchscreen
  • Navigation system
  • 12-speaker Harman/Kardon premium audio system

Exterior
9.1/10

Because of its unique exterior design and small body, the Mini Hardtop 2 Door has always been a hot topic in the hatchback segment. At the front, you get attractive round headlights but at the back, the shape changes close to a rectangular shape. On the front side, you will also observe side curtains to help channel the air. A new fascia is given on the 2022 Mini Hardtop 2 and fog lights have been removed. You also get a new hexagonal grille with chrome trim at the front. There is a new color-keyed panel that reaches the chrome grill. There is no hood scoop given on the base Cooper trim. However, you can get this non-functional hood scoop on the Cooper S and the John Cooper Works.

A mini bulge in the center of the hood can also be observed. On the side profile, flat black on the wheel arches and the lower side are given while a bright metal trim revolves below the windows. A new rear bumper is given on the backside. A rear roof spoiler is present on the backside along with two exhaust tailpipes to makes it look more sporty. On the top, you get an optional panoramic moonroof on the Signature trim. A hand-painted multi-color roof is also a new addition to the 2022 Mini Hardtop 2 Door. As you climb the trim ladder, you get more freedom to choose exterior paint and contrast roof. In the list of upgrades, new wheels have also been added. 15-alloy wheels are standard which can be replaced with 16 or 17-inch alloy wheels. John Cooper Works features 17" JCW Track Spoke Black alloy wheels. Power folding side mirrors, LED headlights with bad weather lights, and LED Union Jack taillights are standard but roof rails are optional.

The Hardtop 2 Door is the smallest hatchback in size as far as external dimensions are concerned. Meanwhile, the Honda Civic is the longest Hatchback with the largest wheelbase in the competition. On the other hand, the Hyundai Veloster is the shortest one in terms of height. That said, the least ground clearance is offered on the Volkswagen Golf GTI hatchback and the highest one is given on the Mini and the Hyundai Veloster. Highlights of the exterior features are:

  • 15-inch alloy wheels
  • LED Union Jack taillights
  • LED headlights
  • Panoramic moonroof
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • Power folding mirrors
  • Optional roof rails
  • Dual exhaust pipes

Safety
3.0/10

As there are no changes in the new Mini top 2 Door, we can take the 2021 model year’s safety ratings for reference. The previous model received ‘Good’ ratings in all crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) but it secured ‘Acceptable’ and ‘Poor’ ratings for headlights in crash prevention tests. In the front crash prevention test, the ‘Advanced’ rating has been given by the IIHS. Additionally, there has been no safety evaluation from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). That said, forward collision warning, dynamic cruise control, lane departure warning, rearview camera, and tire pressure monitoring system are some standard features given on the base Mini Hardtop 2 Door. Highlights of the safety features are:

  • Rear Park Distance Control
  • Adaptive cruise control (optional)
  • Land departure warning
  • Forward collision warning
  • Parking Assistant (optional)

Competition
7.0/10

Mini Hardtop 2 Door Hatchback vs Honda Civic Hatchback

If you ignore the performance, the Honda Civic is the toughest rival in the competition. It offers more interior space since it allows one more person to sit inside. The Honda Civic has better fuel economy than the Mini Hardtop 2 Door and it also has an edge when it comes to safety. The IIHS has picked Honda Civic Hatchback as the top safety pick for 2021. Therefore, if the Honda Civic is a more attractive deal provided you can sacrifice the luxury offered on the Mini.

Mini Hardtop 2 Door Hatchback vs Hyundai Veloster Hatchback

The Hyundai Veloster is the only rival against the Mini Hardtop 2 Door which also has the 2 door body. However, it is still big in comparison. The Mini has a low engine output as compared to the Hyundai but both hatchbacks have nearly the same acceleration. The Hyundai has a bigger fuel tank and cargo space than the Mini.

Mini Hardtop 2 Door Hatchback vs Volkswagen Golf GTI Hatchback

Just like Honda Civic, the 2021 Volkswagen Golf GTI is a 4-door hatchback as opposed to the Mini Hardtop 2 Door Hatchback. This competitor from Volkswagen does consume more fuel on the highway and has slightly less ground clearance as compared to the Mini but this disadvantage gets balanced by a more spacious cabin, bigger trunk, and a larger fuel tank.

Final Verdict

It is clear that the 2022 Mini Hardtop 2 Door has a severe disadvantage when it comes to space. Whether it be passenger volume or cargo, rivals have the edge. But one thing which they don’t offer is the luxury which this beloved child of Mini brings in the Hatchback segment. Therefore, if you want a hatchback with unique and distinctive styling, classy interior, and luxurious vibes at a lower cost, the 2022 Mini Hardtop 2 Door is your deal. But if you are looking for more practicality and won’t mind going to non-luxury brands with a slightly higher price tag, the Hyundai Veloster is your best alternative.
