Overview

BMW has been repeatedly offering outstanding vehicles and its X1 versions have come with a lot of aspects in each segment. The BMW X1 is a luxury subcompact SUV that has bold and brilliant designs and it focuses on both comfort and performance. It has a spacious cabin and various technologies to attract everyday passengers. The price is maintained within an affordable range so that customers can get a taste of the openness of the SUV and at the same time experience swift riding. The fuel economy is commendable for the X1 models and the design helps to ensure a moderate road presence as well.

The 2023 BMW X1 faces strong competition from the Audi Q3, the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, and the Volvo XC40

Buying Advice

There is only one trim available in the 2023 BMW X1 making it quite simple for the customers. However, a buyer can go for individual upgrades or choose one of the two packages. The Convenience package being affordable is recommended here but one can also opt for the Premium for some significant improvements.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2023 BMW X1 is the third generation of the model and comes with a lot of modifications. Now there is an assumption that the subcompact SUVs are not in much demand these days as they have very limited space. The popularity of the BMW X1 not only proves this to be false but the 2023 BMW X1 also offers bigger capacity inside the subcompact SUV. Besides the more mature exterior and dynamic interior in the new version the 2023 X1 also comes with some impressive features and superior performance. There are comprehensive upgrades in the chassis, powertrain, and the latest techs are included in the SUV. The two-row subcompact X1 offers more space for both passengers and cargo. However, one of the trims from the previous year has been removed and two packages are offered with the car with different aspects. The 2023 BMW X1 faces strong competition from the Audi Q3, the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, and the Volvo XC40

Features
9.0/10

One of the most prominent changes in the 2023 BMW X1 besides its dynamic design is the omission of one of its trims from the previous years. The last generation of BMW X1 had two trims - sDrive28i and xDrive28i but the third generation launched in 2023 only has the xDrive28i trim. However, the trim has three different modes namely the Eco Pro, Comfort, and the Sport mode. The satin aluminum exterior trim gives a bold and dynamic style to the BMW subcompact SUV and the 18" V Spoke wheels are great compliments as well.

The multi-zone climate control along with the spacious seats offer optimum comfort for the driver and the passengers. The infotainment system and ConnectedDrive services from BMW come with the latest technologies. The storage compartment package ensures additional space for cargo and various other features make the third-generation BMW X1 all the more attractive. The single trim in the latest generation may seem like a downgrade initially but the different packages and modes available for the xDrive28i make the 2023 BMW X1 sufficient and significant for an owner. The multiple features and aspects justify the MSRP of $38,600 and make the subcompact SUV a good bargain despite high competition from the market.

Packages

The BMW X1 from 2023 comes with two different packages to offer additional features and some significant advantages for the driver as well as the passengers. We Recommend

All the competitors have the same engine size and each has them utilizes a turbocharger as well. However, only the Mercedes-Benz comes close in the power and torque output while the other two have much lower figures. The acceleration is superior for the X1 and the Volvo XC40 takes the highest time to reach 60 MPH. The top speed of the BMW SUV is 130 MPH, the same as the Audi Q3 but both of them are beaten by the Mercedes-Benz with a figure of 149 MPH. The price tag of $38,600 is quite competitive and all the rivals have similar price ranges for their base trims. However, it is noteworthy that the third-generation X1 has the best figures in both torque and power output making it a superior choice in the market at the price range.

Ride and Handling

The ride and handling of the 2023 BMW X1 is quite stable and reliable making it very desirable for prospective customers. The Servotronic vehicle-speed-sensitive power steering allows the driver to have more control while going through uneven roads. The Performance Control and the Dynamic Stability Control aid the rider to accelerate the vehicle more freely and avoid most basic issues with driving. The Hill Descent Control helps the driver to move in inclined planes easily and the front and rear anti-roll stabilizing bars keep the BMW X1 to be safer for the passengers inside the car. At the same time, the gas-pressure shock absorbers allow less jerking on rougher surfaces.

Braking Performance

The braking performance of a vehicle is as important as the power of its engine and the 2023 BMW X1 attempts to stay among the top contenders in this segment. The car has 13.6 inches of brake rotors in the front and 11.9 inches of brake rotors in the rear to complement the wheel stability while braking. However, that is not the only aspect of the brake system of the 2023 X1 as it has several features like Brake Drying, Brake standby, and Brake Fade Compensation to aid the overall performance.

The 2023 BMW X1 SUV has a curb weight of 3,750 lbs which is in the suitable range of weights for optimum braking performance. The 4-wheel ventilated anti-lock disc brakes are equipped with Dynamic Brake Control along with Cornering Brake Control to aid the driver even in most tight situations. All these aspects make the brake system of the 2023 X1 provide reliable and stable performance. Considering the overall curb weight and the size of the brake rotors, the X1 has the most effective braking performance among its rivals.

Fuel Economy
6.4/10

The fuel economy of the 2023 BMW subcompact SUV might not be the best in the market but it is better than most of its rivals. The EPA-certified mileage for the BMW X1 in the city streets and highways is 25 MPG and 34 MPG respectively. The mileage when considered for combined performance in city and highways has a figure of 28 MPG and no other car from the same segment has a better figure in this context. The fuel capacity for the third-generation BMW is 14.3 gallons but it is considered sufficient for a subcompact SUV.

The mileage in the city is definitely the best for the X1 but the rivals have very close figures. On the other hand, the highway mileage is the joint best for Mercedes-Benz and BMW while the other two have lower stats. The 2023 Audi Q3 has a larger fuel tank which results in high ranges in the city but the X1 still overshadows it on the highways. The Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class is equipped with the smallest fuel tank and it offers the lowest range despite having high mileage among the competitors.

Interior
7.0/10

BMW aims to offer a comfortable yet stylish interior for the 2023 X1 and it has included several exciting features to the subcompact SUV. The Black High Gloss Trim with Ambient Lighting offers a soothing atmosphere inside the BMW X1 and the Perforated SensaTec upholstery ensures optimum comfort. The Anthracite Headliner and the floormats are some of the great additions to the already impressive interior of the 2023 X1. The subcompact SUV has a standard capacity for 5 passengers but it surpasses its rivals in the market with better measures in most of the categories. The basic features like cup holders in both the rows and privacy glass increase the creature comfort inside the cabin and make it more attractive for the passengers. The power windows in the first and second are good additions as well.

The trunk capacity is 25.7 cu-ft which is larger than all the primary rivals in the market. Even when the rear seats are folded, the overall area is among the best in the competition with the Volvo having a slight advantage. The 2023 BMW X1 transcends all the categories of the interior section and the overall space along with the style offered by the brand announces the X1 SUV to have incredible popularity.

Infotainment System

There has been a huge upgrade in technology in the BMW X1 for its 2023 edition which starts with the latest iDrive-8 10.7 inches infotainment system. The arguably best infotainment in the competition houses a full-digital curved display and a 7-speaker HiFi audio system with an amplifier. The subcompact SUV has all the features like the larger sedans or SUVs from BMW which includes the augmented view for precision in navigation and the BMW Digital Key Plus. The technology serves the purpose of both safety and comfort and at the same time, entertainment. The BMW ConnectedDrive Services is a prime example in this case and there are plenty of standard features like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB along with Apple Carplay and Android Auto compatibility.

  • Apple Carplay and Android Auto compatibility
  • Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and USB

Exterior
6.0/10

The bold and stylish exterior of the 2023 BMW X1 has the standard measurements in most parts. The wheel dimensions are 18 inches in both front and rear while the tire dimensions are 225/50 in the same way. The all-season run-flat tires are not just for the looks and they offer more stability while going over rough surfaces like debris, curbs, and other obstacles. The Satin Aluminum exterior trim and roof rails are added utilities in the exterior segment. The non-metallic paint options offer better attractiveness and the space-saver spare wheel and tire are an incredible addition to the 2023 X1 from BMW. The attractive kidney grille along with the appealing headlights play significant roles in the road presence. The classic old-fashioned appearance of the X1, with all its features, looks pretty captivating.

The length of the X1 is 177.2 inches which is the largest compared to its rivals. The Volvo XC40 has better width and height in this case. All these figures are quite similar to the primary competitors of the BMW X1 but the 8.1 inches of ground clearance provides more advantages when going off-road. Only the Volvo has a better ground clearance and its wheelbase is among the largest in the market.

Safety
7.0/10

The BMW X1 from the second generation had 5-star ratings in both NHTSA and IIHS-HLDI marking it safe for the passengers as well as pedestrians. The 2023 X1, though, has not been tested yet by the appropriate authorities for the safety ratings, it is expected that the new generation of SUVs will be as safe as its predecessors. There are tons of safety features and technologies included like Advanced Real-Time Traffic Information and Dynamic Cruise Control. The Auto-locking retractors and the Head Protection System installed in the 2023 BMW subcompact SUV make the safety system top-notch. Standard anti-theft alarms and impact sensors are valuable parts of its arsenal.

Competition

2023 BMW X1 vs. 2023 Audi Q3

The Audi Q3 is one of the fiercest rivals of BMW X1 and the overall performance and style make it rightfully so. The Audi Q3 comes with almost all similar features and it offers a great riding experience for the passengers. The SUV from Audi might not be as spacious as the 2023 X1 but it certainly offers style and comfort of the top level. There are rarely any changes in the new version of the Audi and the safety system is solid in the subcompact SUV with some of the highest ratings. The competitive pricing of the 2023 Audi Q3 makes it a top contender and it's really the choice of an individual when comparing it with the new BMW X1.

2023 BMW X1 vs. 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class

The Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class focuses on luxury aspects but manages to keep a competitive price tag for the subcompact SUV. There are minimal changes in the 2023 version of the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class which means it carries over the same level of performance and comfort. The acceleration and control of the vehicle are excellent and the spacious seats make it desirable. The fuel economy and braking system are standard and the exterior design makes the car look more attractive. The last tested version of the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class had some of the highest ratings in safety and the 2023 version is expected to achieve the same. Hence the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class stands toe-to-toe with the 2023 BMW X1 and it is up to the driver when it comes to choosing one of them.

2023 BMW X1 vs. 2023 Volvo XC40

The Volvo XC40 is a subtle subcompact SUV but its features and performance make it a strong competitor for the 2023 X1 from BMW. Premium interior and modern design make the car more attractive but the overall space inside the car is not that appealing. The technology and connectivity are not as impressive as some of the other competitors in the market but the 2023 XC40 manages to rank among the top. The price of the Volvo XC40 is almost the same as the BMW X1 but it lags in the engine segment in terms of torque and power output. Uninspiring acceleration and limited top speed prevent it from becoming the first choice when compared with the 2023 BMW X1.

Final Verdict

The 2023 BMW X1 has upgraded itself from its predecessors to offer several advantages to the driver and passengers. The third generation X1 from BMW stands out in almost all the categories when compared to its primary rivals. There are specific sections where some of the competitors have an edge over the BMW subcompact SUV but the overall performance, comfort, stability, and style make it very difficult to choose another car over the 2023 X1. bigger space, dynamic riding experience, competitive pricing, and all the added and optional features make the 2023 BMW X1 more attractive and practical at the same time. The engine performance is commendable and among the best and the EPA-certified fuel economy is definitely the best in the market. The spacious cabin with a lot of attractive features enables the X1 to remain on top of the list and the exterior design ensures a moderate road presence as well. There is significant competition in the market but the third-generation X1 from BMW can easily become the favorite among them.
