Overview

The subcompact luxury SUV class is not the most popular segment in the American market. Yet, German brands have easily carved a niche for themselves. Amongst them, the Q3 has been an apt representation of Audi’s ideologies and capabilities. Ever since its launch in 2015, the Q3 SUV has managed to provide a true luxury experience like its siblings the Audi Q7 and Audi Q5, but in a smaller and more affordable package. It has always been a comfort hauler and a neat performer that comes with a set of jaunty powertrains. Currently, the vehicle lies in its second generation and looks the part with its sleekness and subtlety.

Buying Advice

The 2023 Audi Q3 comes with two engines and a similar number of trim options. Since the base 40 TFSI unit is expected to suffer from delayed production, the 45 TFSI is the only option available to buyers currently. With this engine, we recommend buyers opt for the Premium Plus trim, which at a diminutive price difference from the Premium trim adds better features and provides access to additional optional packages as well.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2023 Audi Q3 is the latest iteration of the subcompact option. It largely carries forward unchanged apart from a reworked set of features. The mechanical and structural underpinnings remain similar to the outgoing model and as for performance, with no groundbreaking changes, the vehicle will continue to entice buyers. The 2023 Audi Q3 price is slated at $36,400 for its base option and extends to $42,000 for the fully-loaded trim. In its segment, the SUV will continue to compete against the likes of the BMW X1, the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, and the Volvo XC40. How does the latest iteration fare against the seasoned rivals? Let’s find out.

Features
7.0/10

The 2023 Audi Q3 is available in two trims, namely the Premium and Premium Plus, options with a similar number of engines and a standard drivetrain setup. The offering structure remains similar to the outgoing model, with even the pricing for all variations remaining unchanged. In terms of features as well, the SUV remains largely the same. As standard, the vehicle comes equipped with features like a Blind-Spot Monitor, heated front seats, and rain-sensing wipers. As for optional features, Audi offers a comprehensive set of optional packages as well, which include:

We Recommend

The 2023 Audi Q3 comes with two engines and a similar number of trim options. Since the base 40 TFSI unit is expected to suffer from delayed production, the 45 TFSI is the only option available to buyers currently. With this engine, we recommend buyers opt for the Premium Plus trim, which at a diminutive price difference from the Premium trim adds better features and provides access to additional optional packages as well.

Release Date

The 2023 Audi Q3 has been released and is available at the dealerships. However, it is important to note that the base engine, which is the 40 TFSI, is yet to be launched and has been delayed to sometime later in the year.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The 2023 Audi Q3 in its base variant is expected to manage a mileage of 23 and 30 MPG in the city and on the highway, respectively. It averages 26 MPG under combined driving conditions. While it is similar to most of its competitors, the SUV comes with a relatively larger fuel tank that can hold 15.9-gallons. As a result, it manages an overall range of 416 miles. With the 224hp option, the combined mileage drops to 22 MPG, which is a significant drop.

In comparison, every SUV manages 23 MPG and 26 MPG in the city and under combined driving conditions. So, it comes down to the fuel capacity and overall range to determine a winner. In this aspect, the BMW X1 with its 16.9-gallon tank easily leads the segment. It averages 419 miles and lies almost 100 miles ahead of the Mercedes-Benz GLA Class that lurks at the bottom of the table.

Interior
7.0/10

The Audi Q3 interior is a true German experience in smaller dimensions and at a rather affordable price tag. View it from any angle and the SUV reeks of luxury. The seats are adequately comfortable and though space is slightly constrained as compared to the rivals, four passengers can enjoy the vehicle with ease. The setup looks dignified with a large central screen and the material quality also feels good, with the availability of leather upholstery as standard. Even on the dashboard and doors, the build feels ostentatious, and seldom would you find substandard inclusions to cut cost.

As for space, the front seats bestow class competitive shoulder and legroom. They come equipped with heating functionality and can be power adjusted as well. At the rear end, the space might not be the best but small families will find it ample. The addition of a panoramic sunroof adds to the overall airiness of the cabin. The SUV offers astandard cargo capacity of 23.7 cubic feet and with the rear seats folded, the trunk volume increases to 48 cu.-ft. However, the vehicle continues to be the least commodious option in this regard.

In comparison, all SUVs promise to seat five passengers and do offer diminutively higher space in both rows. The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class offers maximum room to all five occupants and having been completely redesigned, it also looks palatial while providing unwavering comfort. However, it is the 2022 BMW X1 that takes the crown in the cargo capacity department with a total volume of 58.7 cubic feet.

Some of the standout interior features available with the 2023 Audi Q3 include:

  • Heated Front Seats
  • Leather upholstery
  • Ambient interior lighting
  • Reclining rear seats
  • Tri-zone Climate Control
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel

How intuitive is the 2023 Audi Q3’s infotainment system?

The infotainment system on the 2023 Audi Q3 is a carryover from the outgoing model. Yet it remains highly modern and sports the best features in the class. As standard, the SUV comes equipped with an easy-to-use and adaptable 8.8-inch touchscreen unit and makes use of the MIB 3 system. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available on all trim levels and are supported by a USB Connection and a 10-speaker sound system. Optionally, buyers can upgrade to wireless connectivity for smartphone integration apps and also upgrade to a 15-speaker sound system as well.

Some of the other infotainment features include:

  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Audi MMI Navigation System
  • USB Connection
  • AM/FM Stereo
  • Optional Satellite Radio
  • Available Technology Package

Exterior
6.0/10

The Audi Q3 SUV has carried a similar design since 2019 and even with 2023 MY, there are no changes. The vehicle carries a striking fascia that is made possible by its distinct character lines, sharp headlamps, and beefed-up front and rear bumpers. The hexagonal grille adds character to the overall design and the standard 18-inch alloy wheels not only look enticing but also maintain a proportionate stance. The vehicle is available in 9 exterior color options, all of which have a distinct appeal and aptly represent the intricacies of the design.

Looking at the SUV from afar, it can be easily understood that the vehicle falls in the subcompact class. It has a total length of 176.6 inches and sports width and height of 72.8 and 62.9 inches, respectively. While the ground clearance is not known, the German sports a wheelbase of 105.5 inches. Additionally, it is also the heaviest at 3,902 lbs.

In the segment, all SUVs fall in a similar ballpark when dimensions are concerned. While the Volvo is also a heavy option, the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class guarantees the best-in-class wheelbase of 107.4 inches. It also looks better than most of its class after its redesign. However, it is also important to note that the BMW X1 is one of the longer options in the class at 175.5 inches.

Some standout exterior features include:

  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Rear Spoiler
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Heated exterior mirrors
  • LED head and taillamps
  • Hexagonal front grille

Safety
7.0/10

The 2023 Audi Q3 has not yet been tested by any organization. However, keeping in mind its past performances and available features, the SUV can be easily trusted. As standard, the German proposition comes equipped with a lane-departure warning system, frontal collision mitigation and the basics of traction control, stability control, and an anti-theft alarm system. The vehicle continues to be built on a dependable structure and for reference, the 2022 MY received top-notch ratings from both IIHS and NHTSA.

  • Blind-spot Monitor
  • Rear Cross-traffic alert
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Lane-keeping Assist
  • Frontal collision mitigation system
  • 360-degree camera system

Competition

2023 Audi Q3 vs 2022 BMW X1

The 2023 Q3 and 2022 BMW X1 are rather closely matched. Representing bespoke engineering and fine craftsmanship, both SUVs easily represent their brand ideologies. Surely, the X1 is the quicker option and has better space to bestow, but the difference is only diminutive. It charges a couple of thousand dollars over the Q3 and does not provide an optional engine specification. Additionally, BMW’s entry-level vehicle is scheduled for a major overhaul in the next model year and we feel it is better to wait for the newer model than opt for the already existing choice.

2023 Audi Q3 vs 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class

The Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class is now in an all-new generation. It is larger than before and improves in terms of performance as well, which allows the vehicle to be a competitive force in the market. Compared to the 2023 Q3, Mercedes-Benz’s offering is quicker and bestows slightly larger dimensions. However, it is not as comprehensively equipped as the Audi, and though ride quality is almost similar, the GLA-Class suffers from intrusive cabin noise. So, among the two vehicles, it all boils down to subjective likability and it is in their best interest that buyers perform adequate due diligence before finalizing a decision.

2023 Audi Q3 vs 2022 Volvo XC40

The final comparison between the 2023 Audi Q3 and 2022 Volvo XC40 is the easiest to adjudicate. While on the face of it, the Swedish vehicle takes lead in terms of acceleration, the German SUV leads in all other comparable aspects. It provides better efficiency, has higher cargo space, and is fairly even with its competitor even when safety is concerned. Additionally, its ergonomic setup makes it an absolute peach and with an easy-to-use infotainment system, the Q3 caters to all classes of buyers. So, for us, Audi easily takes the lead here.

Final Verdict

The Audi Q3 has always proven its worth as a capable contender in the subcompact SUVclass. For over seven years now, the German vehicle has managed to impress buyers with its comfort, easy-to-use aura, and versatile driving capabilities. The 2023 iteration builds on a similar set of strengths and with minor revisions to its feature list, it aims at justifying the price tag it carries. While space can be constricted as per the requirements of some families, the Q3’s coalition of practicality with utility in a tint of flamboyance easily makes the vehicle a personal favorite for many. So, despite its slower acceleration and slightly restricted space, Audi’s offering is likable. However, it is important for buyers to bear in mind that the base variant has been delayed and if you do plan on buying the vehicle, only the higher-placed 45 TFSI models can be purchased currently.
