Overview

One of the largest car brands in the world, Chevrolet, has experience manufacturing cars for over a hundred years. The Chevrolet Bolt is one of the most stylish electric vehicles from the brand and the Bolt EUV is an expansion of the EV line-up. Although many claims that Bolt EUV is just a jacked-up hatchback when in reality it is considered a subcompact SUV. The Bolt EUV meets the requirements of both the rising demand for SUVs in the current market and the changing trend toward electric vehicles.

Buying Advice

Both the LT and the Premier trim for the 2023 Bolt EUV from Chevrolet are equipped with some of the best features and aspects but the Premier trim is recommended in this case. Compared to the 2022 version the Premier trim is cheaper but it has all the necessary features and is stylish from both perspectives. The additional features that are not available in the LT trim make the Premier one more attractive and it stands to be a better choice among the two. Out of the three packages, the Convenience package is recommended but one can also opt for the Comfort package just to save a few bucks. The additional options are significant and their prices are justified as well. However, it is the need of the rider that would best decide on the options.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The Chevrolet Bolt EUV was introduced in the year 2022 and the 2023 version is offered with a few improvements. There were two trims available for the EUV - the LT and the Premier in the 2022 edition. However, Chevrolet decided to offer both trims along with a redline edition for each of them. The biggest upgrade for the Bolt EUV however, is the price of the vehicle which was reduced to around $6000 for the trims and it was done without making any compromises in the engine performance or space inside. The 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV offers the same performance and has the ability to attract people with its stylish designs in both interior and exterior. The vehicle also has a strong set of safety features that focuses on both active and passive safety of the driver and passengers. The Bolt EUV has several competitors in the market and the primary rivals are the Nissan Leaf, the Kia Niro, and the Hyundai Kona Electric.

Features
8.5/10

The 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV has two distinct trims for the latest release which are carried over from the 2022 edition. Most of the features and aspects are the same in the new version and the SUV boasts some of the best features in the upmarket. Firstly, the two trims, LT and Premier, available for the 2023 release can be swapped with their Redline editions for a few additional exterior features. The Redline edition comes with chrome exterior trim in glossy black and red stripes on the wheels, that make it look unique. Additionally, the price of the trims has been reduced to $28,195 for the LT trim and $32,695 for the Premier trim to make them more affordable for the customers.

The automatic climate control feature and the cloth upholstery are destined to provide comfort for the passengers while the 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system and the 6-speaker audio system are included for entertainment purposes. Engine and Performance
9.4/10

The performance of the engine is better than most of the competitors in the market and the 2023 Chevrolet Bolt is definitely equipped with arguably one of the best engines in this category. The electric motor has a 1-speed direct drive transmission and the FWD drivetrain offers the standard performance required for an SUV. The power generated is 200 HP which is among the top outputs in the market and the Bolt EUV also has a torque of 266 lb-ft. It takes less than 7 seconds for the car to get from 0 to 60 MPH and the Chevrolet Bolt can travel a quarter mile in 15.2 seconds only.

The top speed is not very impressive as the 2023 Bolt EUV only goes up to 93 MPH while all the other electric vehicles from this category have more than 100 MPH of top speed. However, there are hardly any cars in this segment to have a better quarter mile figure and in case of acceleration, the Hyundai Kona has a slightly better timing of 6.4 seconds. The Kona Electric is also able to generate a higher torque of 299 lb-ft and all the other aspects are either similar or less than the 2023 Bolt EUV. All the primary rivals belong to the same price range but it is worth mentioning that the 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV has the lowest price tag in the market.

Ride and Handling

The riding experience of the 2023 Bolt EUV is smooth as Chevrolet always attempts to equip the cars with the best aspects and technologies. The Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance technology allows seamless handling of the car while the One Pedal Driving facility that comes with Intuitive Electronic Precision shift provides smooth acceleration and deceleration on any road surface. The MacPherson Strut suspension in the front and the Torsion Beam, Compound Crank suspension in the rear enables comfortable and hassle-free riding even on rough surfaces. The Column-Mounted Electric power steering allows the driver to have better control of the Bolt EUV while riding on irregular terrains.

Braking Performance

The braking performance is standard for the 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV and it is equipped with all the necessary features in the brake system. The partially regenerative electro-hydraulic system generates power from the brakes when applied and the anti-lock braking system offers safe and smooth braking for the vehicle. The regeneration converts kinetic energy into energy for future operations and stores them accordingly. The one-pedal driving facility allows smoother speed up and slows down for the 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV and it even comes to a stop seamlessly irrespective of the road it is traveling on. The brake rotors of the Chevrolet Bolt, however, are rather small considering the heavy body of the EUV.

The Hyundai Kona has the largest brake rotors among the rivals with 12.0 inches in the front and 11.8 inches in the rear. The front brake rotors of the Chevrolet and the Nissan are almost the same at 11.0 inches and 11.1 inches respectively. The rear brake rotors of the Bolt EUV are the smallest at only 10.0 inches and on the contrary, the Nissan Leaf has 11.5-inch rotors which are larger than the front ones. The Kia Niro does not have its braking data available yet. Considering the curb weight and the size of the rotors, the Kona Electric SUV has the most efficient braking in the market.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

The fuel economy or mileage is amongst the top and the Chevrolet Bolt has better performance than most of the competitors in the market. The mileage offered by the 2023 Bolt EUV on the city roads is 125 MPGe while the same on the highways is 104 MPGe. The combined mileage in the cities and highways for the Chevrolet SUV is 115 MPGe which is the best figure compared to its primary rivals. The battery capacity of the Bolt EUV is 65.0 kWh and none of the competitors have a better capacity in this segment.

The overall range of the Chevrolet Bolt EUV from the 2023 version is 247 miles and here it is beaten by the 2023 Kia Niro Wind and the 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric as both of them have better figures. The Kia Niro and the Hyundai Kona also have better mileage on city roads compared to the 2023 Bolt EUV but on the highways and in the combined category the Bolt EUV steers ahead of the competitors. Although the competition is close for the 2023 EUV from Chevrolet, the overall performance and reliable mileage help the Bolt to gain an edge over its rivals.

Interior
9.4/10

The Chevrolet Bolt EUV has a standard and comfortable interior but the SUV lags in trunk capacity. It has a seating capacity of 5 people and is similar in structure to most of the competitors. The capacity in the trunk is uninspiring with only 16.9 cu-ft available for the cargo. The Bolt EUV has a stylish and sleek interior to attract buyers with some of the most advanced technologies to provide an edge in the market. The latest update has made the design sleeker, mature, and it definitely looks more premium than ever. The cabin has a set of funky elements but it also has its fair share of elegance as well where the ambient LED interior lighting and keyless entry with remote start are prime evidence. The heated seats and steering wheel are great additions as well.

All the competitors have larger cargo space in terms of trunk capacity and the Nissan Leaf has the highest among them with 23.6 cu-ft of area. The 2023 Leaf S also overtakes the Bolt EUV in the first-row space category followed by the Kia Niro Wind. All the rivals have similar space available in the rear with the 2023 Niro Wind having a slight advantage. The competition is strong in the interior category and it is difficult to pick a clear winner among them. The interior has a lot of attractive features and some of the most important ones are -

  • Spacious first and second row
  • False cargo floor
  • Smart storage under the console storage area
  • Heated seats
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Ambient LED interior lighting
  • Keyless Entry and remote start

Infotainment System

The 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment unit comes with a lot of standards as well as unique features to improve the overall desirability of the 2023 Bolt EUV. The infotainment 3 plus is the most exclusive feature in the market as of now and the audio system is impressive. The Chevrolet comes with some basic features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility and it also houses built-in Wi-Fi and USB support. The easy UI and the quick responsive touchscreen increase the desirability of the EUV while the real-time vehicle information is a great aid for the driver. Remote communication with the driver is a great aspect and charging alerts along with alerts for nearby charging stations allow the rider to worry less about this factor.

  • Infotainment 3 Plus System
  • Quick responsive touchscreen display
  • Integrated climate control
  • Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon's Alexa compatibility

Exterior
9.4/10

The exterior design of the 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV is almost similar to the previous version but it has some unique modifications to distinguish itself. The redline edition as well as the other exterior features can prove to be strong improvements for the car. The main idea of the EUV is to offer a better design and structure to attract customers and the unique features are strong additions to the base model as well. Several exterior colors are also available alongside the dynamic red and black from the Redline edition. The Projector-beam LED headlamps and the stylish LED tail lights are great additions to the exterior. The panoramic sunroof and the heated power-adjustable mirrors make the EUV look more advanced. The 18-inch Ultra-Bright machined aluminum wheels ensure significant road presence as well.

The overall curb weight of the EUV is 3,680 lbs which is a standard feature in the competitive market. The height of the SUV from the ground is 63.6 inches while the ground clearance is a massive 7.9 inches which is the best in the competition. The Chevrolet Bolt has a large wheelbase of 105.3 inches whereas the Kia and Nissan have slight advantages. The Nissan Leaf is the longest car in the competition but the Kia is wider.

Safety

There have been some serious issues with the earlier EV versions of the Chevrolet Bolt but the brand has gradually improved the situations and rectified most of the problems. There have been top ratings and great test results from the NHTSA and IIHS but the latest version is yet to receive them. The Super Cruise Mode with Semi-Autonomous Driving is definitely the best feature added o the EUV while the basic features like the Lane Change Alert and the Side Blind Zone Alert are very practical aspects. However, the built-in safety features of the 2023 Bolt EUV are sure to reassure the owners while driving the vehicle.

Competition

2023 Nissan Leaf

The 2023 Nissan Leaf S is definitely one of the strongest competitors in the market as it has many similar features and is offered at the almost same price. However, the power generated and the torque of the Nissan Leaf are much lower when compared to the 2023 Bolt EUV but it has a higher top speed. The 2023 Leaf S has lower mileage and range on different roads making it a less probable choice. The cargo is larger and having an overall bigger space makes the Nissan Leaf a rival. However, it might not be a good idea to opt for the Nissan Leaf S as the 2023 Bolt EUV is ahead in many of the segments.

2023 Kia Niro

The 2023 Kia Niro Wind is the perfect rival for the Chevrolet Bolt as it has the same power output and same acceleration making the performance almost as good if not better than the Bolt EUV. The Niro Wind also has a higher top speed but the torque generated is less than the Bolt. in terms of mileage and range, the Niro WInd stands toe-to-toe with the Bolt EUV and has a similar battery capacity as well. The stylish Kia Niro is also spacious and comfortable with a slightly larger trunk capacity but the base price of the model is higher than the Chevrolet Bolt LT. The Kia Niro might have some great advantages but ultimately it is the preference of the driver to choose between the two.

2022 Hyundai Kona

The 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric gives as strong a performance as any in the same category of electric vehicles. However, the price is higher than the Bolt EUV and it is noteworthy that the Kona Electric overshadows the Chevrolet in almost all aspects of the engine segment. Both the range of the car and the mileage offered by the 2022 Kona Electric are higher than the 2023 Bolt EUV making it a primary rival. A comfortable interior with a slightly larger trunk scape adds to the advantages of the Hyundai electric car. The safety ratings are also high which means that the Hyundai Kona Electric can challenge the Chevrolet Bolt any day of the week.

Final Verdict

The 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV is a strong contender in its own category and it is equipped with several features to be considered a good bargain in the market. The overall engine and braking performance, the trims and packages along with the safety and infotainment make the 2023 Bolt EUV an attractive car. Both the LT and the Premier trims have a lot of attractive features and they are practical as well. The internal comfort and the stylish exterior add value to the overall dynamic features. The exterior of the Bolt EUV, on the other hand, is quite attractive with a good road presence. The price of the Chevrolet is affordable and handy packages come for a justifiable cost as well. There is strong competition from Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia Niro Wind, and the Nissan Leaf S but in the end, the 2023 Chevrolet Bolt is a very decent car with a lot of necessary and attractive advanced technologies and features.
