I grew up in a Ford dealership that my grandparents owned in a small midwest town. So it pains me to say DON'T BUY THIS TRUCK! I will never buy a Ford ever again. Read More

When it comes to pickup trucks, there’s no match for the Ford F-150. It has been one of the top competitors in the full-size truck segment since it was introduced back in 1975. It has scored an astonishing 86 out of 100 in the J.D. Power rating depicting its outstanding reliability and explaining why it is one of the top choices even today. Although Ford has always made regular amendments to its golden boy, such cannot be seen in the 2020 model.

The 2020 Ford F-150 has received many grievances leading to a total of 168 complaints, 8 recalls, and an investigation as well, as stated by the NHTSA. Customers have faced problems like the airbags not deploying at the time of a crash, sudden deceleration of the vehicle, hard downshifting at higher RPMs, etc. Problems like this can deeply damage Ford’s image as a trustworthy car manufacturer and can even concern potential buyers as well.

2020 Ford F-150 Regular Cab User Complaints and Problems

Engine and Mechanical Problems

  • Engine - Owners have faced issues like sudden lowering of the RPMs and a rattling sound coming from the engine. In some cases, the vehicle would come to a complete halt and would notify the driver to restart.
  • Brakes - The brake fluid would leak and cause the vehicle to not stop. In some cases, it has also led to the brake pedal touching the floor without any warning. Also, the brakes would lock themselves automatically bringing the vehicle to a complete halt.
  • Suspension - Sudden rattling sound near the rear suspension and loosening of the lower arm bolt was observed in a few cases.
  • Powertrain - While driving in the 3rd gear, hard downshifting is observed and the vehicle would also make a whining sound while accelerating at lower speeds from 3rd to 8th gear. Over 40 complaints state this issue.
  • Steering - Some owners state that the power steering assist wouldn’t be available upon starting and would only become available after a restart.
  • Etc - Sudden power failure of the engine and then coming back to its senses is a commonly faced problem while driving of which no explanation is provided by the dealers.

Safety Problems

  • Driver assistance features - The anti-forward collision system would malfunction displaying an error message with a sound but no serious issue could be diagnosed. Furthermore, the lane keep assist would keep pinging the driver to put their hands on the steering even though they did not let go of it.
  • Seatbelts - A few cases state that the seatbelts didn't lock at the time of a collision. Also, seatbelts would come undone on their own which is quite dangerous.
  • Airbags - The airbags wouldn’t deploy at the time of a crash and some reports even state that while pressing the horn, the steering developed a crack, and the driver-side airbag needed to be replaced.

Exterior Problems

  • Body or body part damage - One of the majorly cited issues includes the opening and closing of the tailgate on its own while driving.
  • Lighting - Customer complaints report poor headlight effectiveness at night and bring up an inability to look out for pedestrians, etc. Adding further, the front low beams would dim, causing a visibility hazard.

Interior Problems

  • Seats - The seats would drop a few inches when the vehicle goes through rough patches or potholes causing the driver to drop suddenly which may be a safety hazard.

Electrical Problems

  • Warning lights - The warning lights wouldn’t show up when the vehicle comes to a sudden halt or would show up when there’s nothing wrong with an error message on the screen.
  • Etc - The driver-side door would not unlock after several attempts even with a manual key.

Miscellaneous Problems

  • Safety - One of the cases states the sudden bursting of the rear window into numerous pieces while driving which seems quite dangerous. Fortunately, no passenger got injured.
