Overview

Part of the fullsize pickup truck segment, the 2023 Toyota Tundra Crew Max competes with the Ford F-150 Supercrew, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab, and the GMC Sierra1500 Crew Cab. A base price of MSRP of $40,815 gets you a 3.4L Turbocharged V6 and A 10-speed Automatic Transmission. Despite the price going up to $79,440, this single powertrain is found in all seven trims. This engine produces 358 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque, achieving a 0-60 of 6.1 seconds, and is offered as an RWD/ a 4WD/ both an RWD and 4WD. The Tundra Crew Max offers a 77.6 feet and 65.6 feet cargo bed, with 8300 pounds and 11,310 pounds of payload capacity respectively.

Buying Advice

The 2023 Toyota Tundra is a full-size pickup that has been making a splash since the launch of its third generation back in 2022. It is pretty comfortable for longer drives and has massive front seats with tons of adjustment controls for people of all shapes and sizes. The seats are well-padded and supportive. The entry-level SR trim has more desirable standard features. However, it has a subpar fuel economy, tows less than American Rivals, and has limited storage.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2022 Tundra got a major facelift in almost all divisions and the 2023 Tundra is entering the market as a carry-forward model. It is a very powerful, highly capable, supremely comfortable pickup truck. The new 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 engine is very capable of doing heavy duties and also offers good drivability. The engine is good enough to produce a power output of 348 horsepower and 405 lb-ft of torque. A 10-speed automatic transmission is provided for the car and will be offered in a rear-wheel drivetrain as standard. An optional four-wheel drive system is also available for the 2023 Toyota Tundra Crewmax. For 2023 there are no big changes expected from the Tundra as the previous iteration was a fairly reworked model. The Tundra will be locking horns with Ford F-150, the RAM 1500, and the GMC Sierra 1500.

Features
9.0/10

The 2023 Toyota Tundra Crewmax will be available basically in five trims namely SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, and 1794. The price bracket for these trims will be approximately between $37,000 and $60,000. The Platinum trim will be the most feature-loaded trim and the 1794 variant is similar to the Platinum trim, except it follows a ranch styling. Along with these trims, a more powerful TRD Pro and Capstone edition too are available. which will have a battery-powered hybrid electric system mated to the normal engine which produces even better power figures of 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. This setup will be available as an option for Limited, Platinum, and 1794 trims.

We Recommend

The suggestion for a recommended trim will be based on the 2022 Toyota Tundra Crewmax since the 2023 model has not officially been launched yet. From the previous year's lot, it will be better to pick the Limited trim as it provides a better ride and an option of a more powerful hybrid powertrain is also available. The infotainment system available with this trim is also larger in comparison.

Release Date

There is no official confirmation for the 2023 Tundra release date. The car is expected to reach the market in winter 2022.

Fuel Economy
6.4/10

As far as full-size trucks are concerned, fuel economy is not a basic focus point but still we have to check it to see how the Tundra performs against the competition. Surely, the 2023 Tundra is not a very fuel-efficient option. It returns a mileage of 18 MPG in the city and 24 MPG on the highways. It has a combined mileage of 20MPG. The truck has a fuel tank capacity of 22.5-gallons, which will result in a range of 405 miles in the city, 540 miles on the highway, and a combined range of 472.5 miles.

Comparing with the competition the Tundra has got the smallest fuel tank, the F-150 and RAM 1500 top the class with a fuel tank capacity of 26 gallons and the Sierra closely follows with its 24-gallon fuel tank. In the case of mileage, the GMC is the only car behind the Tundra while both the other trucks outperform the Toyota. The Ford F-150 has got a combined mileage of 21 MPG and the RAM 1500 with its combined mileage of 22 MPG beats the Tundra as well. The GMC, however, averages a combined mileage of 18 MPG.

Interior
8.0/10

The 14-inch touchscreen in the Tundra is definitely eye catchy and it adds to the interior looks of the car. All the graphics used in the car are pretty easy to read out. It has a clean interior design without many gimmicks. The commanding position gives the driver great confidence and makes driving easy. The Crewmax offers ample room for all the passengers. If you are opting for the panoramic sunroof and the full-width rear power window, it makes the Tundra even more spacious and airy which adds to the overall comfort. The truck offers good forward visibility but the windshield pillars make driving in two-lane traffic a bit difficult. Opting for a surround-view camera system will be wise since it makes maneuvering the truck through city traffic easier.

Now when compared to the competition the seating capacity for the Tundra is lesser. The headroom, knee room, and legroom offered by all the trucks are pretty identical and there is not much of a big difference here. The cargo capacity of the Tundra is not official as of now, while from the competition the GMC Sierra 1500 has the maximum cargo space, beating its rivals by almost 20 cu-ft of cargo space.

Standout interior features of the 2023 Toyota Tundra Crewmax include:

  • Remote keyless entry
  • Distance pacing
  • Steering wheel controls
  • Automatic air conditioning
  • Auto dimming rear view mirror
  • Map lights at the front and rear

How intuitive is the 2023 Toyota Tundra Crewmax’s infotainment system?

The 14-inch touch screen in the Tundra is definitely a standout. The graphics offered in it are sharp and crisp and the menus provided along are very user-friendly. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are provided as standard and this increases the usability of the inbuilt system even more. In its stock setup too, the infotainment system is very capable. Opting for the JBL audio system will also be a good thing to do since it provides excellent audio quality, which makes traveling quite interesting. However, the sound quality from the stock audio system is more than enough for a normal user. Most of the advanced features offered come as standard in the Tundra Crewmax. All the features work fine without any errors, which again proves the quality.

Standout infotainment features in the 2023 Toyota Tundra Crewmax are:

  • Bluetooth wireless connectivity for phones
  • Six speakers
  • Integrated roof antenna
  • Voice-activated radio system
  • Streaming audio
  • Speed sensing volume control

Exterior
6.0/10

The Tundra offers great road presence with its enormous body. The big sharp-looking headlights and the large grill surely provide the truck a very intimidating look. The large wheels incorporated subtly along with the truck give it a nice stance and it definitely stands out in the traffic. The muscular lines followed in the truck give it a beefy appearance and a warning that it is not wise to mess with it.

The Tundra is a big truck in terms of size, it has got a length of 233.6 inches and a width of 80.2 inches. The truck is handsomely tall with a height of 78 inches. The ground clearance is an impressive 9.3 inches. The truck comes with a wheelbase of 145.7 inches.

From the information, the wheelbase of all the trucks is almost the same, and the GMC tops it with its wheelbase of 147.44 inches. Considering the ground clearance the Tundra is the segment winner with its ground clearance of 9.3 inches. In the case of height, again the Tundra has got the edge over the competition with its height of 78 inches. The RAM 1500 will be the closest to follow with a height of 77.5 inches.

Standout exterior features of the truck include:

  • Automatic headlights
  • Tailgate rear cargo access
  • Deep tinted glass
  • Galvanized steel panels
  • Sliding rear window
  • Variable intermittent wipers

Safety
8.0/10

The driver assistance technology provided with the truck is standard for all the trims. This includes automatic high beams, blindspot monitoring, lane keep assist, and rear cross-traffic alert. All the features work fine and provide a good safe environment for the driver and the passengers. The safety ratings for the 2023 Tundra are not yet available yet. The standout safety features of the 2023 Toyota Tundra Crewmax are:

  • Lane tracing assist
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Pre-collision system
  • Driver monitoring alert
  • Front collision mitigation
  • Lane departure alert

Competition

2023 Toyota Tundra Crewmax vs Ford F-150

When it comes to pickup trucks the American brand is a personal favorite of many. The Ford F-150 is a capable truck in its class and surely it is an outright performer. The Ford also provides more useful features such as an onboard generator which can be very handy at times. Coming to driver aid and safety the Tundra has to offer a lot and all those features are available as standard. Even though the competition is very strong between these two pickup trucks, the F-150 has got a slight edge over the Toyota Tundra.

2023 Toyota Tundra Crewmax vs Ram 1500

When compared to the Tundra the RAM 1500 has a better interior and this is the best-in-class. The materials used in the interiors are better than that of the Tundra. The RAM truck is also good when it comes to the performance and storage department. All in all, the RAM 1500 makes more sense than the Toyota Tundra.

2023 Toyota Tundra Crewmax vs GMC Sierra 1500

The GMC comes with some advanced tech features like hands-free automated highway driving through its super cruise control. The luxury provided by the brand is also top-notch, but all this comes along with a higher price tag, and when performance is considered the Tundra and the Sierra 1500 are almost the same levels. So, if you are ready to spend more on luxury, the Sierra can be your choice. Otherwise, the Tundra will be the way to go.

Final Verdict

The Tundra is a proven workhorse in its segment and has a stronghold against the competition. The truck is trustworthy and reliable and the new generation has to offer a lot of advanced features. The truck offers great drivability and road presence too. The competition in the segment has to offer better things than the Tundra in the form of luxury and some very advanced features, but the straightforward and minimal nature of the Japanese proposition is what makes it a personal favorite of many. The 2022 model of the truck was reworked thoroughly and the 2023 Tundra will be a carry-forward model, so if you want a model which is exclusive for the year, only then you will have to wait for the new model, otherwise, you can still reach out the dealerships and book your Toyota Tundra.

2 days ago I was stopped at a red light about 5 feet from the vehicle in front of me. As the light turned green the cars in front of me moved forward as I started to accelerate slowly the front collison system went off unexpectedly. I was barley at 10 to 15 mph. Mind you the care in front was more than 20ft in front of me now. The warming first the beeps then the system on dash then the squeaking...
