Overview

Furnished with chrome body track, showing the rigidity and ruggedness, you are staring at the best car Mitsubishi sells in the US market. The Outlander is a 3-row compact Crossover SUV that promises good comfort, modern technology, style, and competitive performance figures. However, the third row is just to show off as adults don't find room there. It imitates the same platform and various components of the Nissan Rogue. The compact and the sportier version, the Outlander Sport come separately. The Outlander gets strength from the I4 under the hood, which felicitates 181 hp. With the CVT, Mitsubishi has given Front Wheel Drive as standard, however, there is an option of AWD.

Buying Advice

CARHP recommends the shopper to go for its SE trim because it offers a decent value to your money. With 20-inch alloys is a leap from the base ES. SE provides almost the same specifications as that of SEL. One-inch larger, the 9-inch infotainment screen is offered with the SE. As safety is concerned, it gives– Front parking sensor, Adaptive Cruise Control as standard. Wireless charging pad and many more features to differentiate it from ES and stand equivalent to SEL. Its Black Edition model is also a choice to consider if the shopper wants their Outlander dipped in an all-black shade.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

In the new 2023 Outlander, Mitsubishi has added a Plug-in Hybrid powertrain. The PHEV models will be composing a redesigned format, All Wheel Control (AWC), and All Wheel Drive system. Mitsubishi promises to reduce its carbon emissions to 40 percent by 2023. Induced with electric motors, it offers more performance figures and ranges than its predecessor. With the same interior, it feels more spacious than most of the rivals in the segment. On the base trims, the 18-inches wheel looks satisfying, but the senior models are equipped with 20 inches. It will be a direct rival of the Hyundai Tucson, the Volkswagen Tiguan, and the Kia Sportage.

Features
9.0/10

Except for the special and launch edition models, the new Outlander is offered in 3 different trim levels. It starts from the base ES and grows through SE, going all the way up to SEL. All the trims offer a standard Front wheel drive system with an option to upgrade to AWD. The SE comes with a Launch edition model. Meanwhile, the SEL costing you extra bucks offers Launch as well as Special Edition trims. Every model (including Special and Launch editions) offers the same 2.5L I4 engine that pumps out 181 hp and pairs with the CVT.

The new Tucson is the most fuel efficient car in the segment. With the same fuel capacity, the Sportage felicitates almost identical fuel economy figures. Being the heaviest car, the Tiguan sucks more fuel than any other rival. Due to lesser curb weight, the new Outlander delivers 1 mpg extra than the Tiguan. The range of Mitsubishi is similar to that of Tiguan.

Interior
7.0/10

The 2023 Outlander offer a significantly better cabin than its previous generations. The driver’s seat has scored good numbers in adjustments and it can accommodate even a tall and bulky grown-up. Getting in and out is easily accessible in the front and second row. The third-row seats are good for kids, as adults can lack legroom there. Lower trims do not furnish leather seats, still, they make you feel seated in an expensive car. Manual tilt and telescoping steering help the driver to go on long trips without getting fatigued. The third-row seats are easily foldable and can be converted into a bed by folding the second-row seats too. The massaging function on the higher trims enriches the ride experience. In the cold weather, the completely heated seats get absolutely toasty. The infotainment touch screen is simple and comes with easy-to-learn menus. Supports Apple Carplay and Android Auto and gets all the basic tasks done. The 6-speaker sound system is not complaining. Optional 9-speaker Bose sound assures a proper balance of lows and mids but distorts at high volume.

The fully digital instrument cluster is bright and sharp. Outlander offers various modern driving aids, but its traffic adaptive cruise control and lane-centering assist work poorly. Depending upon the selected driving mode, the engine noise reaches the cabin when roaring the car at high speed. Along with the first row, rear-seated passengers are also gifted with climate controls. Despite having a length of 5-seater cars, it offers 7 seats. It has a total passenger volume of 125.5 cu.-ft. The front row dimensions are 40.6 inches for headroom, 41.7 inches for legroom, and 57.9 inches for the shoulder. The second-row dimensions include – 39.1 inches for headroom, 39.9 inches for legroom, and 55.9 inches for the shoulder. Third row – 34.4 inches for headroom, 18.7 inches for legroom, and 51.2 inches for the shoulder.

Rivalry is already classified here in 7-seater and 5-seater SUVs. The 2023 Outlander provides a more roomy interior than the 2023 Tiguan. The new Tiguan offers a mere high cargo capacity behind the third row. New Tucson and the Sportage are furnished with competitive spacious cabins. Behind the first row, the Tucson offers better cargo space while the Sportage has a larger cargo capacity behind the second row.

These features are also assigned in the interior of the new Outlander–

  • Power rear windows
  • Front Cup holder
  • Rear cup holder
  • Proximity Key Doors with push button start
  • Driver foot rest
  • Illuminated locking glove box
  • Interior ambient lights
  • Daynight auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Cargo space lights
  • Digital analog appearance
  • Front center armrest
  • Rear center armrest
  • Perimeter alarm
  • Engine immobilizer

How Intuitive is the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander Infotainment system?

The Outlander proposes an either 8 or 9-inch infotainment touch screen, depending upon the variant you elect. Most of the tasks are operated through the screen and it supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. However, the 9-inch infotainment screen provides the convenience of connecting iPhones wirelessly. The integrated navigation system works decently. The voice controls also don’t provide an enamored experience. As a package on the SE, you get auto-dimming outside mirrors. The Mi-pilot assist ecosystem provides healthy features that sometimes work poorly. Standard 6 -speaker audio system is not satisfying, but an optional 10-speaker Bose system is pretty much loud and clear.

Highlights of the Infotainment system—

  • Mitsubishi connect
  • HD Radio
  • Wireless charging pad
  • Steering wheel controls on the phone
  • Integrated roof antenna
  • Speed compensated volume control
  • Fully digital instrument cluster
  • Audio and voice recognition
  • USB ports

Exterior
6.0/10

Despite the roomy interior the Outlander provides, it also carries a better road presence than most of its rivals. The appearance of the vehicle genuinely possesses the sense of styling, modern technology, and a powerful large car. Its size does not match the segment it belongs to. The shiny chrome panels across the front grille make it look more luxurious and expensive. Usual 18-inch alloys on the ES feel a little shorter, but the 20-inch alloys on the SE and SEL truly match the perspective. The lighting functions of the car are divided into 3 approaches. The LED DRLs provide proper visibility, meanwhile, sharp turn indicators remind us of the Nissan Rogue. It carries a wheelbase of 106.5 inches. The length of the Outlander measures 185.4 inches. Without the mirrors, it is 74.4 inches wide. It is 68.8 inches high from the ground and has a minimum ground clearance of 8.4 inches.

All new 2023 Tiguan has the longest wheelbase in the segment. Hyundai Tucson and the Kia Sportage are based on the same wheelbase. The new Outlander is the widest car but the Tiguan measures a little longer. Keeping the curb weight aside, the Tucson and the Sportage deliver similarities in every dimension. Mitsubishi offers the highest ground clearance but has the shortest wheelbase.

Highlights of the exterior features include—

  • Tire mobility kit
  • Clearcoat paint
  • Chrome side window trims
  • Body colored handles
  • Speed sensitive rain detecting wipers
  • Lip spoiler
  • Black grille within chrome accents
  • LED Brake lights
  • Roof rails
  • Front fog lamps
  • Front parking sensors
  • Poer liftgate rear cargo access
  • Auto on-off composite LED low and high beam headlights

Safety
9.0/10

The 2023 MitsubishiOutlander scored overall ratings of 5-stars from the NHTSA. It scored 4 stars on frontal and the rollover crash tests, while on the side crash test it scored 5 stars. Along with the rear child safety locks and multi-view camera system it is equipped with many safety features.

  • Cruise control-steering assist
  • Driver monitoring alert
  • Collision mitigation for front
  • Dual stage driver and passenger airbags
  • Airbag occupancy sensors
  • Front and rear parking sensor
  • Aerial view camera
  • Tire pressure monitoring system for each tire
  • Collision mitigation back
  • Side impact beams
  • Blind spot monitoring

Competition

2023 Mitsubishi Outlander vs. 2023 Hyundai Tucson

With a $1000 more, the all-new Mitsubishi Outlander provides an extra row in the cabin to occupy 7 passengers. The Tucson has better mileage figures and it also carries lesser curb weight. The Outlander offers a longer size, but the Tucson is engineered on a comparatively longer wheelbase. Integrated LED lights on the front grille of Tucson look good but the Road presence of the Outlander stands it apart from the competition. The Interior of Tucson is made for 5 people, but the third-row passengers on the new Outlander feel restricted legroom.

2023 Mitsubishi Outlander vs. 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan

With a slightly lesser price, the Tiguan has a lot more to offer like – more length, more power a more roomy interior. Pairing with 8-speed automatic transmission, it generates more torque than the Outlander. Outlander has offered more ground clearance for uneven pathways. The Tiguan has a longer wheelbase, but the Outlander has offered better cargo space behind the first row. With more top speed, the Tiguan catches the 0-60mph speed faster. Taking an advantage of lesser curb weight, the Outlander runs a quarter-mile faster.

2023 Mitsubishi Outlander vs. 2023 Kia Sportage

Running on the same engine, the Sportage makes more power than the outlander. The 8-speed automatic transmission with more top speed steers the car faster. The Kia is a 5-seater with elegant fuel economy, but the Outlander offers 7 seats with a roomy cabin. The front of the Sportage looks sportier, while the exterior appearance of the Outlander indicates ruggedness and a sturdy feel. Despite having a shorter length, Kia is furnished with a larger wheelbase. To make us feel like seated in a big car, the Outlander has comparatively more height and ground clearance.

Final Verdict

Definitely, it will be a better choice over most of the rivals in the segment. With a little higher price, it delivers the features and functions of the flagship cars. The interior of the car feels luxurious. Easy ride and handling, comfortable seats with adjustments deliver a soothing experience to the driver and the passengers. Looking at the rigidness, driving modes, ground clearance, and the value it delivers, CARHP recommends this vehicle.
