Overview

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 is here alongside the highest-selling Mazda car, the CX-5. Based on a new platform, the Mazda CX 50 dimensions are bigger than the CX-5, making it a more practical crossover than the CX-5. However, it carries all the USPs of the CX-5, like the athletic handling, upscale interior design, and performance. The 2023 Mazda CX-50 specs are pretty similar to the CX-5, at least in terms of powertrain configurations.

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 price now starts at $27,550, as it received a price hike of $750 over the previous MSRP. Even after the price hike, the Mazda CX-50 is among the top 10 cheapest Mazda cars to buy in 2023. Also, with the turbocharged engine, the CX-50 is among the fastest Mazda cars to buy in 2023. Check out the video by Redline Reviews to learn more about the features, fuel economy, specifications, and cargo space.

The Mazda CX-50 Turbo 0–60 sprint time of 6.6 seconds with the turbo powertrain is pretty decent for the segment. The Mazda CX-50's length, height, and width make it compete against the likes of the Hyundai Tucson, the Nissan Rogue, and the Toyota RAV4

Buying Advice

Among all the 2023 Mazda CX-50 tconfigurations, we would pick the Preferred trim since it offers plenty of standard features along with some desirable ones. The highlights include a windshield wiper de-icer, heating for the mirrors, armrests for both the front and rear seats, and heating for the front seats. For those looking for more performance, the Turbo model has the potential to take the power figures all the way up to 256 hp in its top spec. But regardless of what trim you pick, the Mazda CX-50 will always be an engaging car to drive.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 is the latest crossover from Mazda, alongside the best-selling CX-5. Coming to the USPs, the Mazda CX-50 gets a peppy turbocharged engine option, premium fit and finish, and AWD as standard. Also, there are multiple trim configurations to choose from. Being the first model year of the CX-50, the J.D. Power Consumer Rating score of 78/100 is pretty average. For reliability and resale, it scored 70/100 and 84/100, respectively.

For driving and dealership experience, it scored 79/100 and 88/100, respectively. The 2023 CX-50 recalls account for two in total and are related to damaged ABS control unit and trailer hitch harness. 8.5/10

In terms of acceleration and cruising, the base engine is adequate, but is sometimes a little sluggish, while the turbocharged engine is much more powerful, and it can accelerate much faster off the mark. The brand provides a 6- speed automatic transmission with a standard AWD. With the base engine, the top speed is limited to 127 MPH, but with the turbo model, it goes to 142 MPH.

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 offers the same power output as the Hyundai Tucson. It also dominates the Tucson and the Toyota RAV4. The CX-50 is expected to provide a similar acceleration as the CX-5. It is quicker to reach the 60 MPH mark as compared to the three rivals. It also dominates the Tucson, the Rogue, and the RAV4 in terms of quarter mile timing. The turbo and non-turbo top speed of the CX-50 is as per the segment cars.

2023 Mazda CX-50 Ride and Handling

A Mazda generally offer better handling than most small crossovers, and that's true in this model as well. The CX-50's skidpad performance of 0.87 g isn't anything special, but it feels smooth and stable when cornering steadily. As Mazda's AWD system manages weight transfer electronically and which feels natural. If you know you're going to corner, the CX-50 might adjust torque a little to shift more weight to the front wheels. The CX-50's drive doesn't change drastically in Sport mode, but its gears hold longer under quicker acceleration and it downshifts sooner when braking. The steering becomes more responsive as well. Furthermore, the Off-Road mode does not become obvious until you turn into a corner on a dusty track or an undulated terrain.

2023 Mazda CX-50 Braking Performance

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 comes with vented disc brakes on all four of its wheels. The brake pads last about 35,000-65,000 miles depending on the nature of the driving. It comes with 12.8 in and 12.8 in brake rotors in front and back respectively. The SUV experiences minimal nosedive which is acceptable for a car of this segment. The brake pedal is firm but comes with a longer travel. The additional braking features are Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Brake Assist, Hill Hold Control, and Electric Parking Brake. The ABS, however, undergoes a lot of pulsating while under the action, but certainly fulfills its purpose.

The Mazda CX-50 comes with bigger front brake rotors as compared to the Nissan Rogue and the Toyota RAV4, At the rear, CX-50 has the biggest rotors as compared to all the three rivals. It is also the heaviest of the competitors, which may contribute to the overall momentum while cruising at high speeds. The data for the stopping distance while at a speed of 60 MPH is not yet available for the Mazda CX-50. Among the rivals, the Tucson and the Rogue stop at the same distance, while the RAV4 lags in this aspect.

Fuel Economy
7.5/10

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 comes with a fuel economy of 24 MPG in a city, 30 MPG on a highway, and 27 MPG combined with its non-turbo base engine. The turbocharged powertrain on upper trims offers a gas mileage of 23 MPG in a city, 29 MPG on a highway, and 25 MPG combined. The Mazda CX-50 comes with a 15.9-gallon fuel tank capacity. It is estimated that the car can travel up to 381.6 miles in a city and 477 miles on a highway over a full tank with its base engine.

Sadly, the Mazda CX-50 comes with the worst gas mileage as compared to the Hyundai Tucson, the Nissan Rogue, and the Toyota RAV4. The turbocharged powertrain further reduces the economy figures making it a less efficient SUV than other competitors in the segment. However, the CX-50 comes with a bigger fuel tank capacity than the four rivals. This is also reflected in the range of travel in a city and on a highway, where the SUV surpasses the Hyundai Tucson.

Interior
8.5/10

A six-way, the manually adjustable front seat is standard with the base model of the CX-50, as well as a color infotainment display with 8.8-inch and 7-inch displays. The CX-50's ventilation system has been retained with the physical controls by the brand. Furthermore, the upper trims come in leatherette or leather upholstery, with a new Terracotta color scheme. This CX-50 is a five-seater with an increased wheelbase over the CX-5. There is a generous 41.7 inches of legroom up front and 39.8 inches of legroom in the rear, which is ideal for tall adults.

The cargo capacity of the CX-50 is the least as compared to the three rivals. The Mazda provides an upscale cabin that is, without a doubt, one of the best in this segment. It feels superior to the conventional Toyota RAV4’s styling and comes with a hint of futuristic design orientation to stand at par with the Tucson.

Moreover, the ground clearance of the CX-50 is more than the Rogue and the RAV4. It also boasts the largest wheelbase among the competitors. The CX-50 looks appealing due to its balanced exterior design, while the Tucson comes with an aggressive front. The RAV4 boasts its geometric styling which, in our view, looks outdated. The Nissan Rogue also looks conventional, especially when compared to other cars in this segment.

Some standout exterior features include:

  • 17-inch alloy wheels
  • 20-inch alloy wheels
  • LED headlights
  • Rear roof spoiler
  • Dual exhaust outlets

Competition

2023 Mazda CX-50 vs 2023 Hyundai Tucson

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 is a bit expensive as compared to the Hyundai Tucson. The CX-50 also leads in terms of power output and torque delivery. It also dominates Tucson with its quick acceleration. The CX-50 reaches the 60 MPH mark in less time and also performs better in quarter mile timing. With a bigger fuel tank capacity, it covers more range of travel, both in a city and on a highway. However, Tucson comes with better fuel economy figures.

2023 Mazda CX-50 vs 2023 Nissan Rogue

The Nissan Rogue comes at a similar price as that of the 2023 CX-50 SUV. With its Inline 3 powertrain, the Rogue leads in terms of power output and torque delivery. It is also more efficient with better gas mileage and more range of travel in a city and on highways. Whereas, the Mazda CX-50 provides a quicker acceleration by reaching the 60 MPH mark in less time. Similarly, it does better in quarter mile timing as well. The exterior of the CX-50 is also more appealing than the rival.

2023 Mazda CX-50 vs 2023 Toyota RAV4

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 is more torquey to drive as compared to the Toyota RAV4. The CX-50 reaches 60 MPH quicker than the RAV4 and provides better acceleration with an impressive quarter mile timing. It is also better off roader and appears to be more stylish with its balanced profile. On the other hand, the Toyota RAV4 is a more efficient option and, because of its larger fuel tank capacity, comes with a better range of travel.

Final Verdict

The new 2023 Mazda CX-50 is a promising SUV with loads of features to offer. The car offers amazing handling dynamics and a better quality of ride to the users. The cabin feels premium and easy to use. The 8.8-inch touchscreen display is responsive and enhances the overall quality of the interior. The attractive exterior design remains eye-catching on the road. The car comes with a standard AWD and has a number of configurations to offer with an optional turbocharged engine. For the Mazda CX-50, the fuel economy is decent but not the best in class. The CX-50 SUV does justice with the safety features as well and is expected to receive the highest ratings from IIHS and NHTSA. The body of the SUV feels robust and tough on the outside. The best trim from the lineup to be considered for buying is the Turbo. The feature-loaded trim is an excellent choice in the SUV segment.
