Overview

The North American car market has some of the highest numbers when it comes to massive SUVs and pickup trucks. That’s the reason, American automakers are so successful in this territory. But when you talk about the trend that has so far, the American automakers use massive engines under the hood of their car and focus more on practicality than luxury. They have always lacked behind their European counterparts in terms of sophistication and the luxurious feel inside the cabin.

But you do not have to rely only on the European automakers for a luxury SUV anymore. The 2023 Lincoln Aviator is one of the SUVs that has changed this trend and now you have an American automaker that gives you a great option in the luxury SUV market. The good news is that it also offers a hybrid powertrain and this review focuses solely on the 2023 Lincoln Aviator Hybrid. You can find a separate review for the traditional gasoline-powered variant of the Lincoln Aviator. The 2023 Lincoln Aviator Hybrid competes against the likes of the 2023 BMW X5 Hybrid, the 2023 Lexus RX 500h F Sport Performance, and the 2023 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid.

Buying Advice

The price of the top-of-the-line Grand Touring Black Label is quite premium for what it offers and it does not justify a price difference of almost $20,000. The Grand Touring trim of the Lincoln Aviator Hybrid makes better sense for most buyers as it offers all that you need in a luxury SUV in the segment. You can consider adding the Luxury package which adds premium features like the 30-way power-adjustable and massaging front seats, rear window sunshades, and a 28-speaker high-end audio system.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator Hybrid is a luxury SUV that offers a perfect blend of functionality and luxury. It comes with an opulent cabin layout with plenty of premium materials used inside the interior of the car. But you do not have to compromise on the space either, and you can accommodate a maximum of 7 passengers inside the cabin. Even when all seats are up, it offers a decent space in the cargo area. The hybrid powertrain means that you get a slightly better fuel economy compared to the traditional powertrain option. The Lincoln Aviator Hybrid is one of the strong contenders in its segment against its European rivals.

Features
8.0/10

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator is available in multiple trim levels when you include the gasoline-powered variant of the car. But the plug-in hybrid variant of the Lincoln Aviator is available only in two trim levels. It is available in top trims Grand Touring and Grand Touring Black Label. The MSRP of the Grand Touring trim starts at $71,585 while the Grand Touring Black Label costs $91,675 without any options or packages. The base trim offers quite an impressive list of standard features in terms of creature comforts and technology inside the cabin. It also gets premium touches like leather upholstery to get a luxurious feel inside the cabin. But you can upgrade to the Grand Touring Black Label to get even more premium features in the exterior and interior of the car.

Engine and Performance
5.0/10

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator Hybrid uses a combination of a traditional gasoline powertrain and an electric motor under the hood of the SUV. It uses a 3-liter V6 engine and an electric motor. The combined power output from the powertrain is 494 horsepower and it produces a peak torque of 630 lb-ft. The engine comes mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels of the SUV. It is a plug-in hybrid model which means you can charge the electric motor and drive it in all-electric mode for around 21 miles. The Lincoln Aviator Hybrid takes only 5.4 seconds to go from 0 to 60 mph and the quarter-mile run takes 13.6 seconds. The acceleration figures are quite impressive for the size of the SUV. The top speed of the Lincoln Aviator Hybrid is limited to 145 miles per hour.

The 2023 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid is the quickest car in the competition and it takes only 4.6 seconds to reach from 0 to 60 mph. It is also the quickest car in the quarter-mile run and the top speed is also the best in the class 157 miles per hour. But you will have to consider the factor that it is also way more expensive than the other rivals. The BMW X5 Hybrid comes next taking 4.7 seconds to complete the 0 to 60 mph sprint. The Lincoln Aviator Hybrid takes the third spot taking 5.4 seconds to complete the 0 to 60 mph sprint. The Lexus RX 500h F Sport Performance takes the last position taking 5.9 seconds to go from 0 to 60 mph.

2023 Lincoln Aviator Hybrid Ride and Handling

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator Hybrid is a massive SUV and you do not expect athletic handling from SUVs in general cases. And Lincoln Aviator Hybrid falls in the general case only as it does not go beyond your expectations to offer agile handling. The prime focus of Lincoln here is to offer a comfortable drive instead of offering an athletic handling experience. The heavy weight and massive size of the SUV do not help the handling either. It is not the best choice if you want to have fun from behind the wheel.

The steering wheel is pretty light and responsive for a big SUV but does not offer the feel and feedback you expect to feel confident. You have the option to lower the ride height to minimize the body roll but it is still evident if you try to make a sudden turn at high speeds. You can clearly feel the softer suspension setup when you sit inside the cabin of the Lincoln Aviator Hybrid. It offers excellent ride comfort and manages to soak the road bumps pretty well. You will not complain about the ride quality in the Lincoln Aviator Hybrid for sure.

2023 Lincoln Aviator Hybrid Braking Performance

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator Hybrid is a large SUV with big dimensions. The weight of the SUV is also quite heavy even without any passenger or cargo. However, the Lincoln Aviator Hybrid has a surprise for you in terms of braking performance too. The Lincoln Aviator Hybrid comes with 14.3 inches of brake rotors in the front and 13.8 inches of brake rotors in the rear. The official stopping distance from 60 to 0 mph is not available for the Aviator. But it stops quite well and the brake pedals offer a decent bite too. The gasoline-variant of the Aviator Hybrid took 162 feet of distance to come to a complete stop from 70 mph which is quite impressive for the class. You can expect similar braking performance from the hybrid variant too.

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator comes with decent braking performance for the competition. The braking hardware is quite capable and manages to stop the SUV at a respectable distance compared to its rivals. The BMW X5 Hybrid has not revealed the size of the brake rotors used in the SUV. But based on the distance it requires to come to a stop, it should get a good braking system. The BMW X5 takes only 107 feet of distance to come to a complete stop from 60 mph. The official braking distance is not available for any other SUVs in the competition.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator Hybrid uses a combination of a gasoline engine and an electric motor to get better fuel efficiency for the SUV. It succeeds to a certain extent but does not offer the best fuel efficiency when you keep it against other hybrid SUVs in the segment. But considering the performance it offers and the size of the SUV, you can consider it a decent fuel economy. The 2023 Lincoln Aviator Hybrid manages to return a combined fuel economy of 23 miles per gallon. It also offers an all-electric range of 21 miles which is usable in slow city traffic. But that is EPA estimation and you can expect an all-electric range of 15-18 miles of electric range depending on the driving situation.

The Lexus RX 500h F Sport Performance leads the table when you consider the overall fuel economy figure. It also delivers the best driving range in the competition even though it comes with the smallest fuel tank capacity. The experience of Toyota in making hybrid cars make a difference here for sure. The Lincoln Aviator Hybrid also offers a decent fuel economy but the difference is not that big compared to the gasoline variants of the car. The BMW X5 also does not offer excellent combined efficiency. But its all-electric range is higher than the Aviator Hybrid at 31 miles. The Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid delivers an all-electric range of 17 miles and a combined efficiency of 21 mpg.

Interior
7.0/10

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator Hybrid comes with an opulent interior for the price. You can easily keep it against its European counterparts in terms of the look and feel of the cabin. But one area where it performs even better than its European rivals is the space inside the cabin. The front row offers a 30-way power adjustment which gives you the flexibility to adjust even the smallest setting for the best comfort. The seats are pretty wide and offer good comfort to passengers of different sizes. The second row also offers excellent comfort. The rear seats are not bad either but you have to compromise on the headroom. The quality of materials used inside the cabin feels pretty premium. The cargo area is quite spacious even when all the seats are in place but you can fold down the rear seats to open more room.

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator Hybrid is the only SUV in the competition that offers three rows of seating. The third-row seats are not very spacious but they offer decent space and are good enough for short trips around the town. The good news is that you do not have to compromise with the cargo area either and folding down the rear seats will give you access to a much larger cargo area. The BMW X5 Hybrid offers the best cargo area if all seats are in place for all the SUVs. The Lexus RX 500h F Sport Performance takes the third spot in terms of cargo area. The Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid offers the least spacious cargo area in the competition.

Standout interior features:

  • 30-way adjustable front seats
  • Power tilt/telescopic steering wheel
  • 50-50 split-folding rear seats
  • Four-zone automatic climate control
  • Day-night auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Cruise control

2023 Lincoln Aviator Hybrid Infotainment

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator Hybrid comes with a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment display as standard across all the variants. There is also a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster that shows all the driver-related information. The touchscreen infotainment system on the Lincoln Aviator Hybrid is quite easy to learn and use. The graphics are of good quality and you do not get any complicated menu options to create more confusion. The climate controls also get a more traditional control instead of touch controls which makes it easy to control while driving. The infotainment system comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. The top-of-the-line trim level gets a 28-speakers Revel Ultima 3D surround sound system. The support for SiriusXM satellite radio is also there.

Standout infotainment features:

  • 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment display
  • 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster
  • AM/FM stereo
  • Bluetooth wireless phone connectivity
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • 28-speaker Revel Ultima 3D surround sound system

Exterior
6.0/10

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator comes with a very sophisticated and premium look even from the outside. You can easily compare the exterior styling of the Lincoln Aviator Hybrid with the European rivals. But there is one more thing that sets it apart from its rivals which is its massive road presence. The front of the car gets a relatively small grille and sleek LED headlights with LED daytime running lights. The side of the car keeps things pretty simple and carries the boxy SUV look. The design of the alloy wheels looks quite good and the size of the wheels depends on the trim level you select. The rear of the car does not look boring like many other SUVs either. It follows the same level of sophistication at the rear also with the Lincoln badging at the tailgate and the LED taillights extending throughout the tailgate.

But since there is no change in the 2023 Lincoln Aviator Hybrid compared to the previous year’s model, you can consider the ratings of the 2022 Lincoln Aviator Hybrid. The Lincoln Aviator Hybrid manages to score an impressive score of 5 out of 5 stars on the crash test by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It also score well in the crash test by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the higher variants of the Lincoln Aviator Hybrid with good headlights were also awarded IIHS’s Top Safety Pick award. Considering these scores, you can expect the same level of safety scores for the 2023 Lincoln Aviator Hybrid.

Competition
2.0/10

2023 Lincoln Aviator Hybrid vs. 2023 BMW X5 Hybrid

The BMW X Hybrid has been one of the favorite choices for people looking for a luxury mid-size SUV for years. The BMW X5 Hybrid offers better acceleration and the handling is also a lot better compared to the Lincoln Aviator Hybrid. However, the handling of the BMW X5 is not as good as it used to be and the purists will find a compromise in the handling of the SUV for sure, but it is a better handler than the Lincoln Aviator. Both SUVs offer a premium and sophisticated cabin with plenty of techs inside the cabin. The Lincoln Aviator Hybrid comes out as a more practical option of the two with more space in the cabin. You can get the one that you find better for your requirements.

2023 Lincoln Aviator Hybrid vs. 2023 Lexus RX 500h F Sport Performance

The 2023 Lexus RX 500h F Sport Performance is an attractive option for those who want a sophisticated luxury SUV with decent capabilities and better fuel efficiency. The Lincoln Aviator Hybrid is without a doubt more capable of the two. It can easily tackle more rough terrains and also offer more space inside its cabin. The Aviator Hybrid is also the quicker SUV of the two in the 0 to 60 mph sprint. But the Lexus RX 500h F Sport Performance returns better fuel economy figures compared to the Aviator Hybrid. The RX 500h F Sport Performance is also the more affordable of the two. Again, the final decision depends on your specific requirements.

2023 Lincoln Aviator Hybrid vs. 2023 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid

The 2023 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid is certainly not the most practical SUV in the competition. But the buyers of the Cayenne E-Hybrid do not expect much practicality from it either. It is a sports car with raised ground clearance so you can take it to more places without worrying about scratching the car on uneven terrain. But it is hard to beat the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid in terms of performance as it comes out as the quicker SUV of the two. But the biggest strength of the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid is its sporty handling that no SUV in the competition can match. The Lincoln Aviator Hybrid on the other hand is a more rugged SUV with better practicality and the Cayenne is way more expensive as well. You can go with the one that fits your requirements.

Final Verdict
8.0/10

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator Hybrid is a practical SUV that offers an excellent package for its segment. It manages to tick most of the boxes that a buyer of an SUV considers while buying the SUV. Starting with the performance, the plug-in hybrid powertrain of the Lincoln Aviator does not make you compromise on the performance. It can go from 0 to 60 mph in a little over 5 seconds which is an impressive figure considering the size and weight of the car. The fuel economy is not as impressive as you expect from a hybrid powertrain but it is not bad for an SUV of this size. The only compromise you have to make is in terms of driving dynamics. But it offers great comfort inside the cabin and even the look and feel of the interior feels quite luxurious. The cabin feels quiet even at higher speeds which enhances the luxurious feel inside the cabin. The exterior design also looks quite appealing for the segment. The 2023 Lincoln Aviator comes out as a good option if you are looking for a luxurious family SUV.
