Overview

Built for the first time on the Subaru Global Platform, the 2022 Subaru WRX is bringing an array of upgraded specs including the newly added GT trim in the lineup. An increase of 3 hp from the 2021 model year, it now sports the new 271 hp 2.4L Turbo Boxer engine ensuring even faster 0-60 MPH acceleration. Also, the newer Subaru Performance Transmission on offer is introducing itself with quicker upshift and downshift mechanisms. The latest generation EyeSight Driver Assist Technology and redefined Subaru StarLink Multimedia System also join to enhance the overall stance of this sport sedan.

Released on 19th August 2021, the starting price of the Subaru WRX is expected to range from $28,000 to $28,500. Alongside that, it features a sporty interior layout throughout its configurations of Base, Premium, Limited, and GT. As far as the rivalry is concerned, it dashes in contention against the Nissan Altima VC-T SR, VW Jetta GLI, and Kia Stinger. Sharing the same production line, the more powerful Subaru WRX STI is also there to rumble the track with its aggression. However, the brand has remained idle on further updates of the 2022 STI.

Buying Advice

The Premium trim with automatic transmission is the best available option in the 2022 Subaru WRX lineup. The heated seats for comfort and added EyeSight Driver Assist Technology as standards are aptly enriching for this trim. The power performance also remains consistent throughout the production line. So, there seems no reason not to have it over others by owing comparatively lower expense.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

"The 2022 Subaru WRX promises even better performance from the original rally-inspired compact." - The Car Connection

The 2022 Subaru WRX has been redesigned with myriads of high-end modifications including the more powerful 271 hp Boxer engine. Meaning its power surge will stay competent to sprint from 0-60 MPH in nearly 5 seconds. Specced with a new infotainment and enhanced driver assistance for safe commute, its 4 trim lineup can speculatively cost one around $28,000 for the Base and $32,500 for the Limited.

Regarding the finances, the destination fee of the Subaru WRX estimates at $925. And its maintenance expense charges $4,300 at the least while the repairing may go up to $900 in 5 years of throttling. Along with that, it depreciates to a resale value of $19,000-$20,000 for the same time period. The insurance investment is also included in the cost sheet adding an extra $5,500 to the budget.

"Rally-inspired sport compact cars are on the verge of extinction, but the new 2022 Subaru WRX aims to reignite interest for this enthusiast-focused breed." Car And Driver

The 2022 Subaru WRX is 4-trim production beginning with the Base configuration at an assumed price of $28,000. For such a price tag, it tends to feature assets such as track-tuned suspension and 17-inch alloy wheels for a high-performance rev. The 11.6-inch SUBARU STARLINK Multimedia System has been integrated as well right from the Base trim. The Premium trim gets a little more expensive, being priced at $30,500, it further adds Heated Performance Front Seats and 18-inch alloy wheels.

After Premium comes the Limited configuration estimated to be at $32,500. This specific trim has been given Leather-trimmed upholstery in pairing with a 10-way power driver's seat as well. The EyeSight Driver Assist Technology is also brought up as a standard for Limited trim. The best in the rest is the GT trim which gets Subaru Performance Transmission for improved gear shifting to complement the acceleration prowess. It also  receives exclusive 11-speaker Harman Kardon Premium Audio and Recaro Front Seats inside the cabin.

Fuel Economy
4.0/10

"It offers potent engine performance and surefooted handling, but it suffers from a stiff ride, poor fuel economy." - cars.us.news.com

The 2022 Subaru WRX fuel economy has not been rated by EPA yet. But it might return the same combined fuel mileage of 23 MPG most probably. And that being said, the range coverage can also be metered at 366 miles on average. However, for now, they are nothing less than a guesswork.

Analyzing the figures dictates that the Nissan Altima VC-T SR is the most economical sport sedan in the lot. It marks a 1 MPG more fuel efficiency than the Jetta GLI while 3 MPG more than the Stinger. The Jetta GLI falls short by nearly 90 miles against the Altima, part of the reason is attributed to its 3-gallon smaller tank too.

Interior
6.0/10

"The 2022 Subaru WRX's interior has been improved with a more modern infotainment system and dynamic gauges, along with better materials adorning key touch points." - Edmunds

The interior of the 2022 Subaru WRX is a newly designed yet a typical Subaru emblem. It radiates a blacked-out interior trim with contrast red stitching. The complementary carbon fiber patterns all over the cabin further enhance its appeal. Also, the GT trim has been adorned with exclusive Recaro Performance Front Seats as standard.

Apart from these, the Subaru WRX might continue with its Heated Performance Front Seats from Premium trim onwards. The redefined D-shaped leatherette steering wheel is also top-notch in its feel. As far as space management is concerned, it seems that WRX will offer the same 12 cu-ft cargo capacity in the 2022 model year.

From the speculated figures of the WRX, it seems that it has a 3.4 cu-ft smaller cargo volume than Altima VC-T SR. But latter offers a larger balanced cabin with a 3-inch more shoulder room in both rows. Not just that, even Jetta GLI offers a 2.1 cu-ft more trunk space than WRX. Regarding the infotainment unit, the 2022 WRX features a refreshing 11.6-inch Subaru Starlink Multimedia System.

This unit gets even more complex with a Voice-Activated Navigation unit by Tom Tom in higher trims. It also gets SiriusXM Platinum Plan, SiriusXM Travel Link, and Apple CarPlay & Android Auto compatibility as standards. On top of that, the GT trim has been integrated with 11-speaker Harman Kardon Premium Audio for a fine musical experience.

Exterior
6.0/10

"The exterior offers evolutionary changes based on a new platform." - CarsDirect

With a resculpted silhouette in Solar Orange Pearl and Magnetic Gray Metallic exterior colors, the 2022 Subaru WRX charms with a bold outlook. A massive step forward towards aerodynamics seems obvious with its air outlets near front wheels for curbing lift. The compact LED headlights have been fitted at the aluminum fender that reduces the overall weight by 5 lbs.

The Subaru WRX rides on 18-inch alloy wheels in its GT trim. Regarding other trims, it seems that it will continue with the same other sets of 17-inch and 18-inch wheels too. In the rear, the decklid holds a low-profile spoiler for increasing downforce at high-speed cornering. And the Volcanic Magma accented-rear tail light expounds the overall exterior styling.

2022 Subaru WRX vs 2022 Nissan Altima VC-T SR

Having more power under the hood, the 2022 Subaru WRX may give the 2022 Nissan Altima VC-T SR a nightmare with its potent handling. However, the latter offers a balanced cabin over the former but the gap between the two is not significant. So, it has to be Subaru WRX for its overall approach.

2022 Subaru WRX vs 2022 Volkswagen Jetta GLI

The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta GLI and the 2022 Subaru WRX have parallel cabin spaciousness except for the cargo capacity. But it is that sheer power performance and relative handling that puts Subaru WRX slightly ahead of its VW counterpart. So considering their equal price tag, one has to prefer Subaru WRX.

2022 Subaru WRX vs 2022 Kia Stinger

The 2022 Subaru WRX clearly takes the edge over Kia Stinger with its higher power curve. In terms of cabin management and roominess, they gel with each other at par but Kia has been priced more expensively than the WRX for the same values. Therefore, it is sane to go for the  Subaru WRX.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Subaru WRX is a complete sport sedan offering both aggressive handling and safety gear. This revamped model is expected to have that comfort, opulence, and customization that makes it no less than any other desirable sedans in the market. And the relative price tag is also affordable and reasonable to own. Therefore, it can be one of the top picks on our wishlist.
