Overview

The 2022 Toyota Mirai sedan belongs to a rare breed of cars in a segment that we are not certain if it’ll flourish or go extinct. The powertrain of the Mirai consists of hydrogen fuel cells that power an electric motor transferring the power to the rear wheels pulling the car forward. Since it is powered by electric energy, we will consider it as an EV for now, and later on, if the powertrain setup becomes more popular, then H-powered cars could be a standalone segment. The Mirai is only available to be bought in very few places in the USA, mostly just in California and it is because there are not many hydrogen filling stations in the rest of the country. But it fills up in a couple of minutes and has the range of an EV while being similarly eco-friendly and also saving time eliminating the charging time.

Buying Advice

Here, it strictly happens to be an individual choice as both trims are poles apart. The base XLE trim offers more range and better fuel efficiency while the top-end Limited trim is much more luxurious and the increase in the number of features is very significant. So if you’re looking for maximum efficiency from the Mirai for a lower cost, opt for the base trim but if you are ready to sacrifice some of those positives for more comfort and luxury, then choose the top-end trim. However, it would be nice if Toyota adds a mid-level trim between these two options.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The Toyota Mirai was updated for the 2021 model year and for 2022 it carries over with no major changes. The major revamp made the Mirai look impressively beautiful as the 2020 Mirai looked ugly like a Prius; no offense. The powertrain under the hood is a polymer electrolyte fuel cell system combined with a permanent magnet AC synchronous electric motor mated to a 1-speed Direct Drive transmission. The only main competitors for the Mirai is Hyundai Nexo Limited among which the Clarity fuel-cell version had been discontinued after 2021 and the Nexo has an SUV form factor but is offered at a similar price. Along with these machines, we have taken the Tesla Model 3 Performance which is the benchmark among EVs in the segment.

Features
8.0/10

The 2022 Toyota Mirai is offered in two trim options which are XLE and Limited. There is a significant price difference between the two trims. There is also a difference in range as well as mpg figures between the two trims. The XLE trim is more efficient and offers a higher range compared to the more luxurious and feature-packed Limited trim. There is a single package on offer with the Advanced Technology Package that consists of a Bird’s Eye View camera, front and rear Parking Assist with Automatic Braking (PA w/AB), and front-seat foot illumination while the Limited trim gets the option to equip 20-in. Super Chrome aluminum alloy wheels. The following table shows the detailed list of features incorporated into each trim of the 2022 Toyota Mirai-

2022 Toyota Mirai Release Date

There is no information available regarding the release date of the 2022 Toyota Mirai sedan but we expect it to debut by the end of 2021 or in early 2022.

Fuel Economy
9.9/10

The 2021 Toyota Mirai has a 1.24 kWh battery pack that stores the electrical energy produced by the powertrain and the hydrogen is refilled into a three-part fuel tank with a combined capacity of 11.4 lbs. The Mirai’s fuel economy and range differ according to the trim chosen. The base XLE model offers an efficiency of 76 mpge in the city, 71 on the highway, and a combined efficiency of 74 mpge, and a range of 402 miles while the top-end Limite trim brings it down to 67/64 and 65 mpge in the respective conditions while providing a range of 357 miles. These figures are good and combined with the fact that refilling hydrogen only takes a few minutes, makes the Mirai a great choice from an efficiency perspective and the Mirai also comes with $15,000 or 3 years worth of free hydrogen which further sweetens the deal.

The Honda Clarity is the most efficient machine on this list followed by the Mirai. But when the base models of the Mirai and Nexo are considered, they provide a range of 402 and 380 miles respectively putting them in first and second place respectively. The Tesla Model 3, since we chose the Performance model to match the pricing has a lower range but the Long Range trim increased this to 353 miles which are still below the fuel cell machines. That brings us to the conclusion that the Mirai is the most fuel-efficient machine here offering an amazing range above 400 miles.

Interior
6.0/10

The 2022 Toyota Mirai has a beautiful-looking interior and there is an abundance of SofTex which is a synthetic leather material inside the cabin and everything looks premium and feels nice to touch. The dashboard is beautifully designed and all the controls, buttons, and infotainment screens are laid out ergonomically. The dash and center console is covered by SofTex and there are no hard-touch plastics anywhere to be found which shows the impressive quality of the Mirai’s interior.

The seats are heated inside the base trim while the higher end trim gets ventilated perforated seats. Dual-zone climate control is standard in the XLE trim which gets upgraded to three-zone in the Limited trim. The top-end trim also gets Active Sound Control which further insulates the exterior noise from entering the cabin. There is also an ample amount of space on the inside but the rear seat legroom could be improved and the same is the case with the 9.6 cu-ft of cargo capacity which limits the luggage you can carry.

The Tesla hands down has the most modern, futuristic interior with the huge central touchscreen controlling every aspect of the vehicle, but that also makes it a bit confusing and distracting as you will have to take your eyes off the road to do every minute adjustment. The Nexo being an SUV has the most spacious interior offering an impressive amount of passengers as well as cargo space.

It gets a well-designed updated interior, but with an abundance of buttons and switches in the center console. That makes Mirai’s interior the overall best one to be inside. It offers a nice amalgamation of luxury, practicality, and functionality. The Honda has a spacious interior but it just looks old and outdated. The following are the prominent interior features inside the 2022 Toyota Mirai-

  • Active Sound Control (ASC)
  • Heated and ventilated perforated SofTex-trimmed front and rear seats
  • 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and front passenger seat with memory function
  • Leather tilt/telescopic steering wheel with memory and with audio, Bluetooth hands-free phone, and voice-command controls
  • Three-zone automatic climate control with individual temperature settings for driver, front passenger, and rear-seat passengers
  • Ambient lighting available in eight colors and blue-illuminated footwells in front and rear

How intuitive is the 2022 Toyota Mirai’s infotainment unit?

The 2022 Toyota Mirai comes with a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment unit and an 8-inch multi-information display while the top-end trim also gets a HUD. The infotainment unit is responsive and intuitive to use and also comes with good-looking graphics and a user interface. An audio system is a 14-speaker unit from JBL and it is a decent one. There is also a 12V DC socket in the center console along with a USB media port and three USB charging ports. The following are the prominent infotainment features of the 2022 Toyota Mirai-

  • 12.3-in. Touchscreen infotainment unit
  • 14 JBL speakers including subwoofer and amplifier,
  • 8-in. color TFT LCD gauge cluster including drive mode, speedometer, fuel efficiency, and MID
  • Rear touchscreen control panel with climate control function, sunshade toggle, rear-seat heating and ventilation, and audio controls
  • Premium Audio, Dynamic Navigation with 3-year trial
  • Bluetooth wireless technology
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • Amazon Alexa compatible
  • SiriusXM with 3-month All Access trial subscription
  • Qi-compatible smartphone charging tray with charge indicator light
  • Color Head-Up Display (HUD) with speedometer and navigation

Exterior
6.0/10

The 2022 Toyota Mirai looks impressive, especially when compared to the older generation Mirai. It used to look like a Prius, but now the huge vertical DRL strip and all have been removed and the redesign looks super good. The horizontally striped large grille in the front and the sleek-looking headlamps above it on both sides, make up an elegant-looking front-end. The Mirai is available in five color options which are Black, Hydro Blue, Supersonic Red, Heavy Metal, and Oxygen White and the detailing and accentuation of the Mirai look better in darker shades especially in blue and black.

The wheels are 19-in. twin-spoke aluminum alloys in the base trim while the top-end trim gets black machined-finish wheels of the same size and also gets an option to upgrade to larger 20-inch Super Chrome aluminum alloy wheels. There are chrome elements at some places around the Mirai which blends in with the character of the car very well. Overall the Mirai is a good-looking sedan and this one depicts where alternative-fueled vehicles from Toyota are heading to and their future would be brighter if they plan to innovate the design language in this ongoing manner.

The Tesla looks too simple, the Honda looks freaky and the Hyundai has a half-baked design. This makes the Toyota Mirai the best-looking vehicle here. The Mirai however is the heaviest vehicle here while the most powerful, fastest Tesla is the lightest one which is pretty obvious. The Mirai, while being a pretty-looking car, also is a practical one with a ground clearance of around 6-inches. The Mirai is also the largest one while also having the longest wheelbase. The following are some of the prominent exterior features of the 2022 Toyota Mirai-

  • Bi-beam auto-leveling LED headlights
  • Multi-LED front and rear turn signal indicators, clearance lights, and side marker lamps etched with the Mirai logo
  • Daytime Running Lights (DRL)
  • LED taillights and rear combination lights
  • Satin-black front grille
  • Dual-tone heated power-folding outside mirrors with turn signal indicators
  • Dual fixed Panoramic View Moonroof with power sliding shade
  • 19-in. black machined-finish aluminum alloy wheels
  • Black roof-mounted shark-fin antenna

Safety
4.0/10

The 2022 Toyota Mirai features the Safety Connect suite which consists of some extra assistance features including Emergency Assistance, Stolen Vehicle Locator, Roadside Assistance, and Automatic Collision Notification as free for a 1-year trial. Keeping that aside, the Mirai is still a super-safe vehicle filled to the brim with advanced safety and driver assistance features. However, neither NHTSA nor IIHS have tested and rated the 2022 Toyota Mirai. The following are the most important safety and driver assistance features incorporated in the 2022 Toyota Mirai-

  • Intelligent Parking Assist (IPA)
  • Bird’s Eye View Camera with Perimeter Scan,11 360-degree Overhead View in drive and reverse, and Curb View
  • Front and Rear Parking Assist with Automatic Braking (PA w/AB)
  • Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA)
  • Hill Start Assist Control (HAC)
  • Active Cornering Assist (ACA)
  • Electric Power Steering (EPS)
  • Tire Pressure Monitor System (TPMS)64 with individual direct pressure readout
  • Backup camera
  • Child-protector rear door

2022 Toyota Mirai vs 2021 Honda Clarity

The 2021 Honda Clarity is an outdated machine that is to be discontinued after 2021. This means that this one is long due for a full redesign and we could expect a new one sooner or later. The Mirai dominates the Clarity in all matters except in acceleration, the Mirai looks impressive from the outside, has an elegant and luxurious interior, and boasts a higher fuel economy. All of this means the Mirai is the better choice.

2022 Toyota Mirai s 2021 Hyundai Nexo Limited

The Hyundai Nexo is an updated and capable contender with the same type of powertrain under the hood as the Mirai. But unlike the Mirai which is a sedan, the Nexo is an SUV and it offers better practicality and space, thanks to its crossover form factor. The Nexo is also faster than the Mirai, while the Mirai looks and feels more luxurious and elegant. The Mirai also offers more fuel economy and range while also being a much more beautiful vehicle from the outside. All of this makes the 2022 Toyota Mirai the better choice among these two.

2022 Toyota Mirai vs 2021 Tesla Model 3 Performance

The Tesla Model 3 doesn't have a hydrogen-powered fuel cell powertrain. The Tesla as we know is the epitome of performance in each class it has cars in. The Model 3 Performance is the most powerful and fastest one in the Model 3 range. The Toyota Mirai however, offers more range and has a better-looking interior while the Tesla has a more cutting-edge design with a much simpler interior as well as exterior. A choice between these two has to be clearly based on individual preference.

Final Verdict

The new Toyota Mirai offers an impressive package in two trim options. Although it would have been better if Toyota offered one more trim in between these two trims, the ones available are still feature-packed. It comes with an impressive exterior combined with a luxurious and comfortable interior. The Mirai has a capable powertrain that is not as fast as the pure-electric machines in the market today and the availability of this machine and its fuel is scarce which could be an issue for many. But if you have accessibility to this vehicle, its fuel and you prefer its powertrain, we advise you to go for it.
