Overview

The Porsche Cayenne when it was introduced was the superhero that played a significant role in showing that SUVs are not just powerful off-road beasts, but with enough engineering excellence, they could also dominate the roads and handle with precision. Ever since then, the Cayenne has been the standout performer and it evolved with various improvements. It has powerful engines on offer, luxurious interiors, and a plethora of customization options on offer. This present, the third-gen Cayenne Coupe was introduced in 2019 and now carries over from 2021 to 2022 without any significant changes.

Buying Advice

The Porsche Cayenne Coupe is a standalone base trim with a single powertrain combination and a good set of standard features. The Premium Package would be a nice addition as it offers a great set of upgraded features to the base trim. You could always go for whatever features you need as Porsche offers a plethora of optional features and packages.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2022 Cayenne gets an updated infotainment unit with Android Auto and it actually was a shame that the Cayenne has been a 2021 luxury vehicle without this essential feature. We will be covering only the base Porsche Cayenne Coupe model in this review and it’s powered by a 3.0 L turbocharged V6 engine mated to an 8-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission. Prices start at around $77,500 and can climb significantly higher with added options. It faces stiff competition from the BMW X6 xDrive40i, Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 63 Coupe, and the Audi Q8 Premium Plus.

Features

The Cayenne Coupe is available as a single standalone trim and is priced at around $77,500. The engine under the hood is a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission powering all four wheels. The Cayenne Coupe gets the Sport Chrono Package as standard while there are plenty of another premium, luxury, and performance packages available to equip. The Lightweight Sport Package is the main performance-boosting package and it will cost you around $13,990 and adds a Sport Design Package in exterior color, a Carbon Fiber Interior Package, a carbon-fiber roof, larger 22" GT Design wheels in Satin Platinum, rear diffuser in carbon fiber and many other features.

The Lightweight Sport Package could also be opted in black or Carbon Fiber as part of Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur, costing $15,150 and $17,480 respectively. There is also an Off-Road Package on offer for a lower $2,000 that comes with increased underbody protection, rock rails with integrated skid plates, reinforced engine protection, and additional protection for the rear axle along with other stuff. Other packages available include Performance Package ($4,900), Premium Package ($4,980), Premium Package Plus ($7,460), and some others. The following are the most important features equipped in the 2022 Porsche Cayenne Coupe-

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

The Porsche Cayenne Coupe even while being an efficient machine still is not an outstanding performer in terms of fuel efficiency. The Cayenne Coupe outputs an efficiency of 19 mpg in the city, 23 on the highway, and an efficiency of 20 mpg in combined road and driving conditions. The fuel capacity, however, is on the higher side in the Cayenne Coupe and that results in a range of 450 miles in urban environments, 545 miles on the highway, and a combined range of around 474 miles.

The BMW excels in the fuel economy department being the most efficient machine. The X6 dominates this territory and while considering the fact that it is faster than the Audi and Porsche makes it even better. The most powerful, V8-powered Mercedes is as expected the least efficient machine and also provides the least range. The Merc has the lowest capacity fuel tank which makes things much worse and it could only deliver a combined range below 300 miles which is truly disappointing. The Porsche ties with the Audi in terms of efficiency but is second to the BMW in terms of range with its higher fuel capacity.

Interior
9.3/10

The is coupe SUV comes with 2+2 seating and can only seat four people unlike the rest of the competition that offers space for one more in the rear. The interior is spacious and luxurious and everything is made up of superb quality materials and elements. The seats are 8-way powered sport seats with integrated headrests in front as standard and come with electric adjustment of seat height, seat, and backrest angle. These are further upgradable to 14-way-powered seats with Comfort Memory or an even more premium Adaptive Sport Seats Plus. The rear seat comes with a folding center armrest and individually folding backrests which is a nice touch.

There is enough space inside the cabin and it is nicely noised isolated and provides a great travel experience. The outward visibility is an issue inside this vehicle especially towards the rear due to the sloping roofline towards the back and the small glass area. The interior features a partial leather interior in black or slate grey as standard and optional is the Black and Mojave Beige combo and the Black and Silver Houndstooth combo. The full leather-covered interior and upholstery are optional and are available in six different dual-tone color combinations.

There are also more expensive, unique-looking Race-tex interiors in Black/Silver Houndstooth and the club leather interior in Truffle Brown and Cohiba Brown which are much more pricey but look much more exotic and exclusive. The climate control setup is dual-zone as standard by could be upgraded to a four-zone system, but an issue with the same is that the fans are not powerful enough at low speeds whereas they are noisy at higher speeds. The cargo capacity inside the Cayenne Coupe is a bit on the lower side measuring 22.0 cu-ft, but it is capable of carrying enough luggage during long trips.

All these machines offer great amounts of space on the inside while being uber-luxurious. Being coupe-styled SUVs, the Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes have sloping rooflines which eat into the rear headroom slightly. The Audi Q8 although has a slightly distinctive rear end compared to the Q7, still is not a proper coupe like the other, which means that it is not affected by this issue. The Audi due to this reason also provides much more room for luggage with a class-leading cargo capacity. Porsche offers the most customization options and available features, but the thing is that the number of standard features in the Cayenne Coupe is low considering its higher price. The following are the most important interior features of the 2022 Porsche Cayenne Coupe-

  • Two-zone climate control with separate temperature settings for driver and front passenger
  • Available 4-Zone Climate Control
  • 8-way sport seats in front incl. electric adjustment of seat height
  • Driver Memory Package
  • Ambient Lighting
  • Heated and ventilated seats
  • Massage Seat Function
  • Interior Trim in Leather

How intuitive is the 2022 Porsche Cayenne Coupe’s infotainment unit?

The 2022 Porsche Cayenne Coupe comes with a Porsche Communication Management (PCM) infotainment unit consisting of a 12.4-inch infotainment touchscreen with navigation. The touchscreen is intuitive and easy to use while also having crisp and good-looking graphics and a user interface. The standard audio unit is a Hi-fi sound system with 10 speakers outputting a total of 150 watts. There is also an optional Bose Surround Sound System worth $1,200, with 12 speakers including a 100-watt shell-subwoofer and a total output of 570 watts available to equip.

You could also pay a whopping $7,000 for an even more premium Burmester High-End Surround Sound System with a total output of 855 watts and 13 individually controlled loudspeakers. This one includes a 300-watt active subwoofer with a class D digital amplifier integrated into the vehicle body and features sophisticated high-end audio components. The Cayenne Coupe could also be equipped with the Porsche Rear Seat Entertainment (PRSE) system that comprises two high-resolution and anti-glare 10.1-inch touchscreen displays mounted on the backrests of the front seats and two wireless Bluetooth over-ear headphones. The following are the standout infotainment features-

  • Instrument cluster with two high-resolution displays
  • Porsche Communication Management (PCM)
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Wired Android Auto
  • Hi-fi sound system with 10 speakers, the total output of 150 watts
  • SiriusXM Radio (with 3-month trial)
  • Available Porsche Rear Seat Entertainment (PRSE) system

Exterior
9.3/10

The Cayenne Coupe is undoubtedly one of the best-looking SUVs in the segment or just in general. It has this sort of slick, polished smoothness all around it and when coated in a metallic shade it just really shouts out that it is a statement of luxury and craftsmanship. However, the wheels and the stance of the Cayenne Coupe as well as the sloping rear end make it look extremely sporty at the same time. The Cayenne has a ground clearance of 8.2 inches with the standard suspension setup while the optional air suspension setup could increase it to a higher 9.6-inches.

The Cayenne Coupe is offered in two standard colors which are black and white while there are also six metallic color options and three special color choices on offer. Also, an option to choose a custom color is also provided by Porsche to make your Cayenne Coupe truly exclusive. The standard wheels are Cayenne wheels that are 20-inches in size whereas Porsche provides a huge range of 17 wheel options including larger 21 and 22-inch wheels. There are also many packages on offer to make the Cayenne Coupe look more sporty, rugged, or flashy according to your preferences.

It is true that all of these machines look impressive and beautiful. But the Porsche and the Mercedes are the more luscious and luxurious looking ones while the BMW looks the most sporty and aggressive. The Porsche offers the most ground clearance while the Audi has the least. The Mercedes even with the stronger V8 engine also happens to be the lightest one here which is super-impressive. The Audi Q8 is the overall largest and heaviest one. The following are the prominent exterior features of the 2022 Porsche Cayenne Coupe-

  • 20" Cayenne Design Wheels
  • Privacy glass for rear windows
  • Automatic rear hatch
  • "Porsche" logo and model designation on the rear hatch in High Gloss Silver
  • Twin single-tube tailpipes, outside left and right, in brushed stainless steel
  • Fixed panoramic roof
  • Adaptive rear spoiler in exterior color with lip in Black
  • Fixed upper wing
  • Four-point LED daytime running lights in each headlight
  • Front corner lights with LED position light and direction indicator

Safety
5.0/10

The 2022 Porsche Cayenne Coupe has a fully galvanized steel/aluminum hybrid lightweight body shell while its hood, tailgate, doors, fenders, and roof are made up of aluminum. This ensures structural integrity and rigidity. The Cayenne Coupe gets 6-piston aluminum monobloc fixed calipers with 390 mm internally vented brake discs in the front and 4-piston aluminum monobloc fixed calipers with 330 mm internally vented brake discs in the rear. This braking setup functions impressively and brings the Cayenne to a stop at a short distance.

The 2022 Cayenne Coupe has been safety tested and rated by neither NHTSA nor IIHS but we are sure that this one is a very safe vehicle as it is constructed with utmost precision and also comes with an impressive set of safety features. The following are the standout safety and driver assistance features incorporated into the 2022 Porsche Cayenne Coupe-

  • Porsche Side Impact Protection System (POSIP)
  • ParkAssist (front and rear) with reversing camera
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
  • Head-Up Display
  • Surround View
  • Night Vision Assist
  • Remote ParkAssist
  • Lane Change Assist (LCA)
  • Lane Keep Assist (LKA) including Traffic Sign Recognition
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
  • Porsche InnoDrive incl. Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Lane Keep Assist (LKA)

2022 Porsche Cayenne Coupe vs 2022 BMW X6 xDrive40i

The 2022 BMW X6 xDrive40i is a superb machine offered at a great price. It comes with a powerful and impressively fuel-efficient engine under the hood, coupled with engaging handling and superb ride quality. The interior is also luxurious and comfortable and it is an absolutely brilliant package overall. All of these are enough reasons to conclude that this BMW is a much better choice than the slower, more expensive Porsche. The Cayenne Coupe is definitely a great coupe SUV, but the BMW undercuts it by providing everything at a significantly lower price.

2022 Porsche Cayenne Coupe vs 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 63 Coupe

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 63 Coupe is the fastest, most powerful option among these coupe SUVs. It has a brawny V8 engine under the hood and it also strikes the perfect balance between performance and comfort. It also has a premium and luscious interior as well as exterior. It does all of this while also being cheaper than the Porsche. These are all reasons to choose the AMG over the Cayenne Coupe as it is a truly special vehicle.

2022 Porsche Cayenne Coupe vs 2022 Audi Q8 Premium Plus

The Audi Q8 is kind of the odd one out here. It is not as engaging as the Porsche, or as flashy or luxurious. But it is technologically advanced, faster, and much more practical than the Porsche. All these are great reasons to go for the Q8 and it is a superb machine. But, it is just not special enough, it doesn’t stand out from the crowd. The Porsche sure does do that perfectly, it also handles better and provides a more luxurious travel experience, making it the better choice.

Final Verdict

The new Porsche Cayenne Coupe is an amazing machine. It is surely an SUV on steroids with the agility of a sports car. It has a powerful engine under the hood and it handles impressively. The interior is crafted artistically and everything looks and feels premium. The ride quality and in-cabin feel are also superior. But the thing is for the same price, you can get the AMG GLC 63 Coupe which can do all of this faster and better. The Porsche only has a long list of customization options and better fuel economy to layout against the Merc. The BMW X6 xDrive40i is also a faster, much less expensive alternative making the Porsche seem lacking features for the price paid.
