Overview

The 2022 Maserati Levante is a midsize SUV offered in 3 trims, starting off at a base MSRP of $79,400. For that price, it mainly competes with the Porsche Cayenne Coupe, the BMW X6, and the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class Coupe. Between 3 trims, the Levante offers 3 different powertrains. The base engine is a 2.9L twin-turbocharged V6 capable of making 345 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. If more power is required, the same engine puts out 424 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque in the Modena trim. There is also a 3.8L twin-turbocharged V8 making 550 hp and 538 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The Maserati Levante reaches 60 mph from zero in 6 seconds on its base engine, which jumps up to 4.1 seconds with the V8. Depending on the powertrain, the Levante can manage a combined fuel economy between 16 and 18 mpg. While we’re on the topic of choices, the 7 striking colors the Levante Trofeo comes in really pull you towards itself.

Buying Advice

Thanks to its myriad of engine choices and bespoke Fuoriserie program it offers a rather exclusive driving experience for its potential buyers. While the rivals offer a more solid standard list of features, the peppy and characterful personality of this Italian SUV is hard to beat in most driving conditions.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The new Maserati Levante will be available in three new trims namely the GT, Modena, and Modena S. The high-performance Trofeo trim will continue to exist and will be reviewed separately. The 2022 Maserati Levante will face competition from the likes of BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE 450, and Porsche Cayenne

Features

The 2022 Maserati Levante will be available in three new trims namely the GT, Modena, and Modena S. The price for the base GT trim is expected to start at $80,900 and go up to $116,900 for the more powerful Modena S trim. Maserati claims that the new trims were developed to fulfill customers’ demands and express different yet complementary spirits of innovation, performance, and design of the Maserati range.

We Recommend

We believe that the Modena trim makes more sense as it will be equipped with a more powerful V-6 engine and offer many necessary features that the GT misses on. It will also add many sporty elements to match the higher performance like bigger 20-inch alloy wheels and sports bumpers with black piano inserts. The Modena trim can also be upgraded with some more optional packages like driver assistance package, Sportivo package, comfort and convenience package, Nerissimo Modena package etc to make it more desirable. Some of the standout features of the optional packages are:

  • Driver Assistance Package: It will include advanced brake assist, automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, surround-view camera, etc
  • Comfort and Convenience Package: It will include power-adjustable foot pedals, heated rear seats, heated windshield washer nozzles, etc

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The 2022 Maserati Levante is surely a fuel guzzler when compared with its competition. The efficiency of the V-6 powered model is similar to other V-8 powered cars. Its EPA rating for the base model is 16 mpg in the city, 22 mpg on the highway, and 18 mpg in combined driving conditions. With a fuel tank capacity of 21.1 gallons, it can travel up to 337 miles in the city, 464 miles on the highway, and 379 miles in combined driving conditions. However, the GLE 450 is equipped with a bigger fuel tank of 22.5 gallons and offers the maximum range of 517 miles in the comparison, followed by BMW X5 with 503 miles, Porsche Cayenne with 474 miles, and Maserati Levante with 379 miles. The Porsche Cayenne comes third in the range battle despite having the largest fuel tank of 23.7 gallons, owing to its lesser fuel efficiency of 20 miles per gallon.

Interior
9.9/10

The interior of the 2022 Maserati Levante will surely be a place to behold. With a perfect blend of Italian craftsmanship and modern design elements, it’s definitely one of the better-designed cabins. The 2022 model is expected to receive minor changes in the interior department. However, most of the functions are bound to be the same as the 2021 model. It will accommodate up to five passengers comfortably. All the seats will be trimmed in leather upholstery and the front seats will receive heating functionality as well.

The front seats will be 12-way power-adjustable and provide memory function as well. Some features like ventilated seats and different textured leather upholstery in many different colors will be available as optional. The rear seats will be 60/40 split and foldable It can be used for extending cargo capacity. It will also come with quad-zone climate control and an air quality sensor that will help maintain desirable temperature and quality of air inside the cabin. The presence of an electric dual-pane sunroof with tinted glass will promote a feeling of roominess in the cabin.

The BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 are more practical SUVs with respect to their cargo capacities of 33.9 cu-ft and 33.3 cu-ft respectively. The Porsche Cayenne also offers a decent cargo capacity of 27.2 cu-ft. The Levante is the least practical SUV here with just 20.5 cu-ft of space. However, the cargo space can be extended by folding the rear seats. The GLE 450 seems to offer better headroom and legroom across both rows, followed by the BMW X5. Some of the standout interior features of the Maserati Levante are:

  • Heated front seats
  • 12-way power-adjustable front seats

Exterior
9.9/10

The 2022 Maserati Levante will retain the bold and distinctive styling of the outgoing model albeit with some minor changes. The Levante was designed to look like an arrow in motion and it surely does. The front fascia will retain its twin sleek LED headlights with LED DRLs and a signature front grille with an updated Maserati logo in it. The front bumper will be highlighted with a black mesh grille and twin circular fog lamps. The side profile will be the same as before but will now get trim badging above the fender vents.

It will also use chrome lining over the window panes to accentuate its premium appeal. The wheels will implement many different designs and be available in varying sizes depending upon the trim. The Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 is the bulkiest of the lot, followed by BMW X5 and Maserati Levante. The Porsche Cayenne is the lightest in the comparison. The Maserati Levante is longer and sits on a longer wheelbase. A longer wheelbase helps with improved stability at higher speeds. The BMW X5 offers maximum ground clearance, followed by Maserati Levante Porsche Cayenne and Mercedes-Benz GLE 450. Some of the standout exterior features are:

  • Full-LED matrix headlights
  • Available Nerissimo package
  • Dual tip quad exhaust system
  • LED tail lights
  • Electric air shutter

Safety
3.0/10

Just like the 2021 model, the 2022 Levante has not been tested by the NHTSA or IIHS and we don’t expect it to get tested anytime soon. The Maserati Levante comes with some passive and active safety features to ensure the safety of its passengers. Some basic safety features like airbags, traction control, stability control, anti-lock braking system, etc. The 2022 Levante will also get features like a blind-spot monitoring system, highway assist system, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, surround-view camera, forward-collision warning system, hill descent control, and some more. However, most of the above-mentioned active safety features will be available on higher trims or as optional. Some of the standout safety features of the Maserati Levante are:

  • Automatic high beam headlamps
  • Blindspot monitoring system
  • Highway assist system
  • Stolen vehicle locator via Maserati Connect
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Traffic sign recognition system

Competition
4.0/10

2022 Maserati Levante V/S 2022 BMW X5 xDrive40i

The BMW X5 produces less power than the Levante but its performance is slightly better. It is also much more fuel efficient than the Levante. It is also much more practical than the Levante considering a much higher cargo capacity.

However, the Maserati aces in the handling department and its exhaust note is unmatchable. It also comes with better designed interiors and cocoons its passengers in sheer luxury. The Italian craftsmanship is clearly visible even in some finer details of the Levante’s interior and exterior. It is also definitely a better looking SUV between the two. However, it is much more expensive than the BMW X5 XDrive40i. We feel the BMW X5 is a better choice between the two of them.

2022 Maserati Levante V/S 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450

The Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 is very similar to its fellow German BMW X5. It is more powerful than the Levante and offers better performance than it. Despite being more powerful, it offers much better fuel economy than the Levante. It also offers better cargo capacity than the Levante. However, the Levante is lighter and handles very well. It also offers a higher ground clearance than the GLE 450.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 comes with a more subtle design language whereas the Levante is a flamboyant Italian with its aggressive styling. It is also more expensive than the Mercedes-Benz GLE 450. The MErcedes-Benz GLE 450 is also premium and features a luxurious cabin but can’t match the Levante. However, we would pick the GLE 450 considering all the other features.

2022 Maserati Levante V/S 2021 Porsche Cayenne

The Porsche Cayenne comes very close to the Levante in terms of handling and even surpasses it under certain conditions. It is less powerful than the Levante but offers nearly the same performance. It is more fuel efficient as well. The interiors of both the cars are on par with each other.

However, we feel that the Levante just looks better with its aggressive front and elegant rear profile design. The Porsche Cayenne offers a better cargo capacity than the Levante and is lighter too. The Levante sits on a longer wheelbase and comes with a higher ground clearance than the Porsche Cayenne. Also, the infotainment experience might be a notch better than the Porsche Cayenne.

Final Verdict

The Levante is Maserati’s vision of a performance SUV and it surely succeeds at fulfilling it. It handles well and is fairly practical too. The aggressive exterior design, well designed interiors and high-specced infotainment system are surely its USPs. However, the low fuel efficiency is the Achilles heel of the new Maserati Levante

The aural experience from its V-6 engine is surely a bliss and quite unmatched in its segment. It comes with many safety features however, most of the active driver assistance features are optional. So, it all narrows down to your personal preference. If you want more visual flair and a thrilling aural experience, go for the Levante. If you are high on better performance and practicality then check out some other SUVs in the segment.

              I LOVE MY CAR

Pros - ["The engine is quiet", "The comfort of the interior"]

Cons - ["There isn't anything", "I love this car"]

The car has an excellent performance rating and it gets amazing gas mileage at 16 mpg. Nothing else has impacted my ownership experience about the vehicle. It's been a great asset to my family and I wouldn't have bought anything different
