Overview

Maserati finally seems to be taking a bold step to come out of the shadows of the prancing horse by showcasing their own charisma and character to the world by launching their all-new mid-engine Maserati MC20 for the 2022 model year. It has taken 16 years for Maserati to come up with a successor to the track-focused MC12, but they are back with a thump. The new supercar from this Italian stable should give its old partner a run for their money as it employs technology right from Formula 1 motorsports.

Buying Advice

As the MC20 coupe is an all-new model entering a new era for Maserati, the trims and offered features list cannot be speculated at this point in time. Therefore, we would like to keep our opinions and recommendations in this regard reserved until further details are unveiled.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The MC20 coupe is powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine which utilizes a unique dual-combustion chamber adapted from Ferrari's Formula 1 race cars that is expected to take this supercar to 60 mph in under 3 seconds. A heavier convertible will also be launched later and will also feature an AWD drivetrain. With the prices expected to start at around $210,000 for this practical supercar, it competes against the stalwarts of the industry like the Ferrari Roma, Lamborghini Huracan Evo, and McLaren 600LT

Features

Maserati usually offers its cars in standard four trims that are named as GranLusso, GranSport, GTS, and the top-of-the-line Trofeo. But since the MC20 is a very special super sports car, we doubt it needs so many different trims, and we speculate it to be offered in just a couple of different trims. Since no information is provided by the Italian marquee in this regard, we’ll have to wait till the official announcement.

We Recommend

As the MC20 coupe is an all-new model entering a new era for Maserati, the trims and offered features list cannot be speculated at this point in time. Therefore, we would like to keep our opinions and recommendations in this regard reserved until further details are unveiled.

Fuel Economy
3.0/10

Supercars and fuel efficiency never go hand in hand, and if purists are to be believed, it is forsaken to use these two terms together in one statement. Since only limited information is currently available for the 2022 MC20, with the MPG figures not being one of them, we cannot really comment on it. That being said, it should be one of the more frugal ones in the market as it employs newer technology and a smaller engine at its heart.

The roaring V8 under the hood of the Huracan Evo is known to gulp fuel and is evident with the fuel efficiency figures of the Lamborghini. Both the McLaren 600LT and the Ferrari Roma are far more frugal than the Lamborghini. The large gas tank employed in Lamborghini offers a solid driving range of over 300 miles on a single tank of gas. As per reports, the MC20 should also offer a great range to meet the everyday supercar claims made by Maserati.

Interior
3.0/10

Although Maserati is focused on making the MC20 a more practical car, do not expect the practicality of the likes of an everyday coupe. There aren't many storage pockets, with only one small espresso-sized cup holder in the cabin that can seat only 2 occupants. The trunk is also minuscule to look at and should only be able to fit in hardly a week’s worth of groceries if that’s what you intend to do with your super sports car.

The dashboard is very minimalistic with just the air conditioning vents and two screens on it. The infotainment system too is positioned lower on the dashboard to avoid distraction while enjoying a drive in the MC20. The center console houses the drive modes control, and a knob is placed very close to the driver’s hip that can be used to operate the infotainment system. The steering wheel offers multiple functions but doesn’t look cluttered as the Ferraris.

The exact dimensions of a supercar are very difficult to obtain as most manufacturers refrain from sharing this information, and that is exactly the case with the cars present in our comparison. Only the Ferrari Roma offers a 2+2 seating as compared to a 2-seat configuration for all other cars. Although the rear seat is only good for kids, it can also add on as a luggage space to add on to the 10 cu-ft of the trunk, which is already the best in class and over twice as large as the Huracan and 600LT. Major interior features include:

  • 10.25-inch Thin Film Transistor Digital Instrument Cluster
  • Multi-function Carbon Fiber Steering Wheel
  • Leather and Alcantara Sabelt Sport Seats
  • Virtual Rearview Mirror
  • Drive Mode Selector

2022 Maserati MC20 Coupe: Infotainment and Connectivity

The cabin of the 2022 MC20 offers a twin-screen setup with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster complementing the identically sized low-mounted infotainment system. The interface is based on the Android platform and can be used with the touchscreen or the center-console mounted knob near the driver’s hip. Maserati states that connected car technology will make its way to the MC20 along with a handful of convenience features like Amazon Alexa voice commands, a mobile hotspot, and satellite radio amongst a few.

Few major infotainment features include:

  • 10.25-inch touchscreen Android-based infotainment system
  • Amazon Alexa connectivity
  • Mobile Wi-Fi Hotspot
  • Connected services

Exterior
5.0/10

Maserati has burnt the midnight oil and has developed a new carbon fiber monocoque with an aluminum subframe that is very strong and is yet light in weight. For the upcoming EV, Maserati plans to use thicker carbon fiber, but currently the lightweight construction aids in both agility and dynamics. The overall design does remind us of the Lotus designs and has a smooth following elegant design language and does not employ overly aggressive aerodynamic trims that is the norm for the segment.

The Dallara-developed design and countless hours at the wind tunnel have resulted in a very low drag coefficient of 0.38. Add to that the butterfly doors, adaptive spoiler, and dual exhausts, and you have a perfect recipe for an attractive supercar.

Despite the heavy investment in terms of carbon fiber chassis and countless hours in the wind tunnel, no car can match the lightweight McLaren 600LT, which is far lighter than the others in spite of being pretty large in dimensions. The Ferrari Roma offers the highest ground clearance, while the McLaren has the lowest stance. The adaptive suspension of the MC20 raises the front end by 2-inch to avoid scraping the front bumper lip on the curbs. Major exterior highlights of the coupe are:

  • Carbon-fiber Chassis and Aluminum Subframes
  • Butterfly Doors
  • Front-mounted Vortex Generators and Rear-mounted Diffuser
  • Active Rear Spoiler
  • Adaptive Suspension
  • Dual Rear Exhaust

Safety
8.0/10

The 2022 MC20 is yet to make the shores and hence has not yet undergone the safety tests of both the NHTSA and the IIHS. That being said, exotic high-value cars like these hardly undergo such testing, and the Maserati MC20 is also expected to follow the suit. Maserati has promised that it would offer plenty of safety and driver assistance features to make the MC20 more livable in daily driving conditions. A highlight of the expected safety features for the 2022 MC20 coupe has been mentioned below.

  • Automated Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane-Departure Warning with Lane-keeping Assist
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Blind-Spot Monitoring
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring

Final Verdict

The 2022 Maserati MC20 Coupe is quick, looks elegant, is more practical than its rivals, and is also expected to be on the more affordable side without compromising on the performance. With the new age engine technology, which Maserati claims can be applied to other engines irrespective of size and cylinder counts, this clearly could be a new beginning for the Modena-based carmaker. So, if you don’t really have to have a prancing horse or a bull on the nose of your next supercar, the MC20 should be an absolute delight to add to your garage.
