Overview

The Porsche Boxster is a super good-looking, fun-to-drive entry-level luxury sports car. You can put the roof down and drive it around enthusiastically. It is also very much luxurious, and two people can travel comfortably, cocooned in luxury. The 2022 Porsche 718 Boxster comes as a carryover model with no major upgrades and a price hike of around $1,200. Two new colors have been added, which are Shark Blue and Frozenberry Metallic along with some new optional leather accessories including floor mats. Porsche now also provides an option to customize the keyfob according to the exterior color of their Boxster.

Buying Advice

The 2022 Porsche Boxster in the base trim along with the Premium Package would be the ideal choice. The Boxster T offers better handling and stability to drive around more aggressively, but for these Boxster models with the 2.0 L Flat-4, the base model would be enough. Adding the Premium Package would get you some extra features and more luxury. But if you are really looking for better performance, you can go for the Boxster S, which is just slightly more expensive than the Boxster T model but comes with a stronger engine and more power.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

We will be covering the base 718 Boxster and the more performance-oriented Boxster T with the same engine but sportier suspension in this review, while the more powerful Boxster models are reviewed separately. The 718 Boxster comes with a 2.0 L turbocharged boxer-4 engine mated to a 6-speed manual transmission powering the rear wheels, while a 7-speed PDK automatic is optional. Pricing starts at $63,950 for the base model, while the 718 Boxster T starts at $73,050. The 2022 Porsche 718 Boxster competes with the 2021 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible, 2021 BMW Z4 sDrive M40i, and the 2021 Jaguar F-Type P300 Convertible.

Features
7.0/10

The 2022 Porsche 718 Boxster is available in two variants, the base 718 Boxster and the more expensive Boxster 718 T. Both models are powered by the same 2.0 L Flat-4 engine mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, while you could opt for the 7-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission for $3,210 extra. The 718 Boxster T is different from the base model as it comes with some extra perks. It is equipped with the Sport Chrono Package which costs $2,090 as a standalone option along with a 20mm lowered suspension setup, 20-inch alloy wheels, and some other exclusive touches on the exterior as well inside the cabin. The following table shows the detailed list of features and prices of the 2022 718 Boxster models-

Engine and Performance
9.9/10

The engine under the hood of both the 2022 Porsche Boxster models is a 2.0 L turbocharged boxer-4. Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission, while a 7-speed PDK automatic transmission is optional. This powertrain puts out 300 hp and 280 lb-ft of maximum power and torque. The Boxster also has a Sport button to engage the sports mode and a Sport exhaust system with a central oval brushed stainless steel tailpipe. The electromechanical power steering with a variable steering ratio in the Boxster is precise and feels very much connected to the driver.

The base 718 Boxster with the 6-speed manual transmission takes 4.9 seconds to achieve a speed of 60mph while the quarter-mile is crossed in 14.7 seconds. The PDK automatic transmission can reach 60mph in a shorter 4.7 seconds. The higher-priced Boxster T with the automatic gearbox and Sports Chrono Package can do the 0 to 60 run in 4.5 seconds, while the speed figures for the manual gearbox remain the same. With the Sports Chrono Package equipped, the base model also can achieve these faster numbers.

Handling is engaging, and the Boxster is a fine car to drive around, regardless of the city, the highway, or the twisties. The lightweight spring-strut suspension with front and rear stabilizers in the base model provides ample comfort and also manages to keep the Boxster stable around tight curves and corners. The enhanced Porsche Stability Management (PSM) system also helps in maintaining the pace and keep the Boxster on the intended path. The Boxster T trim further boasts a PASM Sport suspension that has been lowered by 20mm from the base model which provides better stability.

Nothing can match the performance of the behemoth 6.2 L V8 engine under the hood of the Corvette Stingray Convertible. It is significantly more powerful and is the only one here that can reach 60 mph in under three seconds and has a whopping top speed of 190 mph. The Corvette is just around $2,500 pricier than the others which makes it the most value for money option here. The BMW Z4 is the second most powerful one here, followed by the Porsche. The Porsche is a superb handling machine, but its meager 2.0 L four-pot heart is not even a competition for the Corvette which is also a great handler on and off the track. Overall, all of the competition is just overshadowed by Corvette’s supercar-level performance, making it the clear winner here.

Fuel Economy
4.0/10

The Porsche 718 Boxster is not a very efficient one even according to sportscar standards. It provides a fuel economy of 20 mpg in urban environments, 26 on the highway, and a combined efficiency of 22 mpg. The fuel capacity is also too meager to attain a considerable range. The 14.2-gallon fuel capacity can only provide a range of around 284 miles in the city, 369 miles on the highway, and 312 miles in the combined road and driving conditions. These figures are among the lowest ones in the segment.

The least powerful and slowest Jaguar F-Type Convertible is the most efficient one here, while the BMW Z4 strikes the perfect balance between power and efficiency. As expected, the huge V8 inside the Corvette makes it a fuel guzzler, but it still puts out the best range on the highway as it comes with the largest capacity fuel tank. The Porsche 718 Boxster doesn’t have admirable fuel efficiency figures, and its range is the most disappointing one here.

Interior
5.0/10

The interior of the 718 Boxster is luxurious and crafted out of superb quality materials. It is also extremely customizable, and everything could be specced up according to your individual preference. The standard interior color theme is back, but there are plenty of color choices to choose from. There is enough space for two people in the Boxster, but the cargo capacity is not very much, but that is expected from a car of its class. The seats are comfortable and supportive and further could be upgraded to much better options. The seats as standard are sports seats with 2-way adjustments along with electric adjustment of backrest angle and manual adjustment of seat height.

These standard seats are upgradable to 14-way power-adjustable sports seats with a Memory Package or even more premium 18-way adjustable Adaptive Sport Seats Plus. The steering wheel, gear lever, and door handles are covered in leather in the chosen interior color. The seats are partial or full leather seats in Black or Agate Grey as standard. These could be upgraded to full leather seats in colors, including Graphite Blue, Luxor Beige, Guards Red, Bordeaux Red, and many more, or you can even choose from even more premium Natural leather interior in Espresso or Espresso and Cognac.

Porsche sure does have one of the most luxurious and premium-looking cabins in the segment and also offers the most amount of customization options and combinations. The Corvette has a spacious and premium interior with a lot more cargo area, but ingress and egress out of it is quite hard. Outward visibility is also an issue with the Corvette as well as the BMW Z4, while the Jaguar has a noisy interior. All of this means that the Boxster has the best looking and feeling interior among all these machines. The following are some of the most important interior features of the 2022 Porsche Boxster:

  • 2-zone automatic climate control with integrated active carbon filter
  • 2-way adjustable Sport seats
  • Integrated headrests
  • Heated Seats (Front)
  • Standard interior in Black
  • Available ventilated seats
  • Available GT Sport steering wheel (Standard in the 718 T)

How intuitive is the car’s infotainment unit?

The 2022 Porsche Boxster comes with a Porsche Communication Management (PCM) infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen unit and an instrument cluster with a central tachometer and high-resolution 4.6-inch TFT display with trip computer functions, vehicle settings menu, navigation, radio, and telephone display. The touchscreen is smaller and less intuitive than what many rivals offer now.

As for audio, a 110-watt Sound Package Plus sound system featuring 6 Speakers is standard, which is upgradable to a 505-watt BOSE Surround Sound System with 10 loudspeakers and an active subwoofer for $990. There is also a more expensive available Burmester High-End Surround Sound System with a total output of 821 watts and 12 individually controlled loudspeakers that would set you back by $4,690. Major infotainment features include:

  • Instrument cluster with central tachometer and high-resolution 4.6-inch TFT display
  • Porsche Communication Management (PCM) including mobile phone preparation and audio interfaces
  • SiriusXM Radio (with 3-month trial)
  • HD Radio Receiver
  • Wired Apple CarPlay incl. Siri
  • Sound Package Plus sound system featuring 6 Speakers and 110 Watt output
  • CD/DVD drive
  • 11 GB internal jukebox storage
  • 2 USB slots and 2 SD card slots
  • Bluetooth hands-free mobile phone connection

Exterior
9.0/10

The 2022 Porsche Boxster looks the same as last year’s model. It is very beautiful and looks sleek and stylish from the outside. The front fascia with integrated air intakes looks classy yet sporty. Being a convertible, the 718 Boxster features a roadster top with fully electric operation and a heated rear glass window. The retractable roof could be opened and closed at speeds up to 31 mph. The Boxster is also one of the lightest cars in the segment. Overall it is an extremely beautiful machine to drive around with the roof closed or open.

There are four standard color options available with the Boxster, which are White, Black, Guards Red, and Racing Yellow, while there are nine metallic color choices worth $650. Furthermore, there are five special color options, whereas the convertible rooftop could be opt in four shades. There is also an option to choose a custom exterior color for a whopping $11,430. The standard wheels are 18-inch Boxster alloy wheels, while there are options including 18, 19, and even 20-inch wheels of different styles to choose from.

The Porsche and the Corvette are the most beautiful looking ones here. The Corvette just looks like a full-fledged supercar, while the Boxster is what it is, a beautiful small sports car. The BMW is a bit off-looking. The Corvette is the heaviest, but by a small margin, while the Porsche is the lightest. The Corvette is also the longest and widest and also comes with the highest ground clearance. The following are some of the standout exterior features of the 2022 Porsche Boxster:

  • "PORSCHE" and "718 Boxster" logos in High Gloss Silver on the rear fascia
  • Bi-Xenon Headlights incl. Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) with integrated 4-point LED daytime running lights
  • 18" Boxster alloy wheels
  • Grey top tint on the windscreen
  • Electrically adjustable and heatable exterior side mirrors

Safety
8.0/10

The 2022 Porsche Boxster is made using intelligent lightweight construction with aluminum-steel composite along with galvanized steel bodyshell components. This ensures structural integrity and rigidity. Neither NHTSA nor IIHS has tested or rated the 2022 718 Boxster or its predecessor, so these scores are not available for comparison or analysis.

The brakes in the Boxster are 4-piston aluminum monobloc fixed calipers with 330 mm cross-drilled and internally vented brake discs in the front and 299 mm brake discs in the rear. These are strong enough to bring the vehicle to a stop effectively. The Boxster is also equipped with a superb set of safety and driver assistance features that keep it and its occupants safe. The following are the most important safety features:

  • Porsche Side Impact Protection System (POSIP)
  • ParkAssist (front and rear) with reversing camera
  • Cruise control
  • Available Lane Change Assist (LCA)
  • Available Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
  • Available Porsche Entry & Drive

Competition
7.0/10

Porsche 718 Boxster Convertible vs 2021 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible 1LT

Not a single car is able to compete with the Chevy Corvette in terms of power or performance. It stands at this price range and competes with actual supercars. The power output and performance is blistering, and the handling is superb in the Corvette Stingray Convertible. At a slightly higher cost, the Corvette offers much more, making it the obvious choice.

Porsche 718 Boxster Convertible vs 2021 BMW Z4 sDrive M40i

The BMW Z4 is a capable contender, offering much more power and torque than the Boxster. It also offers better fuel efficiency and a more refined driving experience. The Porsche, however, is more luxurious and customizable. Having a very similar price, the BMW Z4 is the better option here. It is much faster and offers an overall better package.

Porsche 718 Boxster Convertible vs 2021 Jaguar F-Type P300 Convertible

The F-Type P300 Convertible is the base model in the F-Type range from Jaguar. It comes with an underpowered engine, and the performance is not satisfactory at all for the price it is offered. The Jaguar has a better fuel economy compared to the Porsche, while the Porsche dominated in all other matters. The 718 Boxster is faster and more luxurious and offers a lot more customization options, making it the obvious choice.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Porsche 718 Boxster is a slick and sweet machine with a powerful engine and impressive handling. The interior is also luxurious, and there are a plethora of customization options available to be equipped. The Boxster, however, lacks fuel economy and range. The engine is also not as refined as the rivals, and that affects enthusiastic driving. For the price of the Boxster, the Corvette Stingray Convertible or the BMW Z4 would be the better choice, and at the price of the Boxster T, you can get the Boxster S, which is a more powerful and overall better choice.
