The 2023 BMW Z4 comes with two trims to offer: sDrive30i and M40i. The sDrive30i is priced at an MSRP of $53,795 and M40i at $66,295. The previous edition of the car was among the top 10 cheapest convertibles, and it is expected to be worthy of that again. The sDrive30i comes with a turbocharged 2.0L Inline 4 engine, while the M40i features a 3.0L Inline 6. It uses an 8-speed automatic transmission with a standard RWD. The M40i, however, is reviewed separately. Moreover, the convertible is provided with an abundance of standard features such as 10.25-inch touchscreen, Dual-zone automatic climate control, Imitation leather upholstery, Satellite radio, 18-inch alloy wheels with summer performance tires etc.

The 2023 BMW Z4 sDrive30i doesn't offer many configurations to the customers but comes with several optional packages. Driving Assistance Package, Convenience Package, Premium 2 Package, and Dynamic Handling package. The brand also provides optional 19-inch wheels, leather upholstery, 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, a remote engine start, front and rear parking sensors, ambient lighting, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, and adaptive cruise control.

The sDrive30i is offered at a reasonable price of $53,795, and comes with utility features like push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, automatic wipers and 10.25-inch touchscreen. In our opinion, the Dynamic Handling Package, which adds M Sport brakes and differential, is worth adding to the convertible.

Release Date

The 2023 BMW Z4 will be released in November 2022.

The Z4's engine is mounted under a long hood, delivering power to the rear axle completely. Despite lacking the optimum number of cylinders, the turbocharged 2.0L Inline 4 powertrain on the sDrive30i has a surprisingly impressive exhaust note. The engine makes 255 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft of torque. The car comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and launch control. The gearbox matches the engine brilliantly, which makes this transmission one of the best in the industry in terms of speed and smoothness.

The BMW Z4 offers the same power as the C300 Cabriolet and leads the Boxster and the C300 in terms of torque output. sDrive30i’s engine sounds better than the four-cylinder engines found in cheaper versions of the Porsche 718 Boxster because the BMW Z4's base engine produces lots of torque from low down in the rev range. The Z4 also provides a quicker acceleration than the C300 in terms of the 0-60 MPH mark and the quarter mile timing. The top speed of the car is 165 MPH which is at par with its rivals.

2023 BMW Z4 Ride and Handling

Unlike the previous edition of the BMW Z4, this model gets swift handling capabilities and excellent body control. The steering is responsive and imparts the necessary confidence to the driver around corners.While the soft-top roof makes it more agile, it still feels heavier than an ideal convertible, but a ride on a less demanding road won't disappoint. Furthermore, as a result of its reassuring straight-line stability and swift ride, the suspension handles road bumps well as well. In addition, the cabin is well insulated and refined, regardless of the roof being up or down, which is an impressive accomplishment for a convertible.

2023 BMW Z4 Braking Performance

The 2023 BMW Z4 comes with vented brakes on all four of its wheels. Depending on the nature of the driving, the brake pads last about 30,000-70,000 miles. The size of the brake rotors of the BMW Z4 is yet to be determined. The Z4's braking system is prone to grabbiness, but the system is still capable of bringing it to a stop smoothly at low speeds. Additional braking features include Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Brake Assist, Hill Hold Control, and Electric Parking Brake. The car weighs 3,287 lbs and covers around 113 feet to stop while cruising at a speed of 60 MPH.

The size of the BMW Z4 is not yet available, but, among the rivals, the 2022 Jaguar F-type comes with the biggest brake. The 718 Boxster and the C300 come with the same size of rotors. The Z4 is lighter than the C300 Cabriolet and the F-type, which reduces its overall momentum while driving. The Z4 covers less distance to come to a halt while traveling at 60 MPH as compared to the F-Type. The data for the 718 Boxster and the C300 is not available yet.

The BMW Z4 offers a fuel economy of 25 MPG in a city, 32 MPG on a highway and 28 MPG combined. In contrast, the top-end M40i comes with a gas mileage of 22 MPG in a city, 29 MPG on a highway, and 25 MPG combined. The preferable fuel type for the convertible is Premium unleaded gasoline. The car has a 13.7 gallons fuel tank. It is estimated that the car can travel up to 342.5 miles in a city and 438.4 miles on a highway over a full tank. 

The BMW Z4 has more fuel economy as compared to the Porsche 718 Boxster, the Mercedes-Benz C300 Cabriolet, and the Jaguar F-Type. The largest fuel tank capacity is provided by the F-Type, followed by the C300, the 718 Boxster, and the Z4. In a city, the Z4 offers a better range of travel as compared to the 718 Boxster and the F-Type. On the other hand, On a highway, the Z4 is more efficient than just the 718 Boxster.

The 2023 BMW Z4 provides enough room for both the driver and the passenger. Besides having beautifully arranged controls, the dashboard is also well-made, with SensaTec-trimmed soft-touch surfaces and black SensaTec upholstery, and high-gloss trims. The seats are comfortable and come with a power adjustable feature. The cabin also includes features like a power-operated soft-top roof, a universal garage door opener, dual-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, dynamic cruise control, tire-pressure monitoring, push-button ignition, and a rearview camera. 

All the convertibles except Mercedes-Benz C300 are two seaters. The 2023 BMW Z4 provides better headroom than the 718 Boxster and the F-Type. It also provides better shoulder room than the F-Type. The C300 and the Z4 come with modern and upscale cabins with an attractive center console. The 718 Boxster and the F-Type also provide a premium interior but with a conventional layout. Also, the Z4 comes with 9.9 feet of the trunk which is decent as per the segment.

How intuitive is the 2023 BMW Z4 infotainment system?

The vehicle is equipped with two 10.25-inch displays: one in front of the driver displaying information from BMW's Live Cockpit Professional, and a central touchscreen displaying information from iDrive 7.0. Though getting used to iDrive takes some time, we like that it still can be controlled with the console's rotary dial and hard keys. The system supports connectivity features such as Bluetooth connectivity, Android Auto and Apple Carplay. Other features include onboard navigation, natural language recognition, real-time traffic information via BMW's Connected Package Professional, and SiriusXM with 360L. A 205 watt 10-speaker sound system is also provided with dual bass speakers.

As a retro classic, the kidney grille evokes images of the BMW Z8 and is much less imposing than the newly designed 4 Series Coupe's heavily elongated grille. This year, a new 19 inch wheel design is optional with the car that comes with a matte finish with a diamond polished edge. The Z4 also gets three new paint options namely Thundernight Metallic, Skyscraper Grey, and Portimao Blue Metallic. The car stands 51.4 inches in height and has a wheelbase of 97.2 inches.

The BMW is broader than the Porsche 718 Boxster and the Mercedes-Benz C300. It is also taller than the 718 Boxster. Among the rivals, the best ground clearance is offered by the 718 Boxster, followed by the F-Type and the C300. The Z4 comes with the smallest wheelbase as compared to its rivals. The Jaguar F-Type comes with a more aggressive front face, while the BMW Z4 and the C300 lean a bit toward neutral styling. The 718 Boxster carries its signature Porsche design which might attract some buyers as well.

The 2023 BMW Z4 doesn’t provide as many safety features as some other brands. It comes with an airbag suite that includes dual-front, dual-side, and dual knee airbags. Additionally, It has rollover protection system, ABS brakes, dynamic stability control, a rearview camera, tire-pressure monitoring. Moreover, the brand provides fatigue/focus alert, frontal collision warning, automatic city collision mitigation and braking, accident preparation with post-crash braking, dynamic cruise control, and automatic high beams. The BMW Z4 has yet to be crash tested by the NHTSA and the IIHS. The European NCAP gave the 2019 edition a full five star rating.

It is also more fuel economical and provides a better range of travel. On the other hand, the 718 Boxster’s H-4 engine generates more power and leads in terms of the acceleration as per the 0-60 MPH mark and quarter mile timing.

2023 BMW Z4 vs 2023 Mercedes-Benz C300 Cabriolet

The Mercedes-Benz C300 Cabriolet is more expensive than the BMW Z4. It offers the same power output as the rival but leads in terms of the range of travel. Whereas, the Z4 makes more torque. It is quicker to reach the 60 MPH mark from a standstill. It also dominates the C300 in quarter mile timing. The Z4 is also more fuel efficient, both in city and on a highway. The exterior of both cars looks attractive and balanced. However, the C300 looks more appealing in comparison.

2023 BMW Z4 vs 2022 Jaguar F-Type

The Jaguar F-Type is about $20,000 more expensive than the Z4. It comes with a V8 powertrain, which makes more power than the competitor. It also leads in terms of the 0-60 MPH timing and provides a better range of travel over highway. The BMW Z4, on the other hand, is more fuel economical than the rival. It offers better braking capabilities and a modern interior. The car also has a better city range to offer
