Overview

Lincoln is set to introduce the new 2022 Corsair in the fall of 2021 with little to no changes to it. They added a new plug-in hybrid trim in 2021, that promised a higher range and power than their regular gas trim level. In keeping with the outgoing model, the new Lincoln Corsair PHEV will be the top trim of the SUV line-up priced at $51,000 (expected). Due to this reason, you get some of the best luxurious features inside its cabin that will justify its price.

Buying Advice

The PHEV Corsair trim level is currently offered in a single trim, and the 2022 model year is anticipated to be no different. For those who want to buy a plug-in hybrid version of this SUV, Grand Touring is the only available trim and as the upcoming version will be the corresponding to the 2021 model, so to wait for the 2022 model is not suggested. The Grand Touring PHEV is the top-level trim of the Corsair series and it has all the features of the lower trims plus some extra tech.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The Lincoln Corsair also appears as one of the most stylish SUVs in its class with great body dimensions that give it all the characteristics of an SUV. Corsair also outpaces its rivals such as Audi Q5, BMW X3, and Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e when it comes to space and fuel range. Performance-wise, however, it was not able to match the standards of its German rivals. Even so, the Corsair PHEV will be able to draw buyers thanks to its superiority in other classes, which only adds to its appeal.

Features
7.0/10

The Lincoln Corsair PHEV is currently available in only one trim, and we expect the same for 2022. This trim is called Grand Touring PHEV and it is a plug-in hybrid version of the regular Corsair SUV lineup. Price estimates for the new model year are expected to range between $51,000 to $51,600. The 2.5-L Inline-4 engine and the single electric motor on this car will work together to give the vehicle extra power and mileage.

Lincoln has engraved a blue star logo on it and provided specific 19-inch alloy wheels to differentiate it from other regular Corsair gas trim levels. A few of the standard features of this SUV include heated and ventilated front seats, a 10.0-inch infotainment system, leather upholstery, blind-spot monitoring, and lane departure warning, as well as a heads-up display.

2022 Lincoln Corsair PHEV Release Date

Lincoln hasn’t stated anything about the upcoming Corsair Grand Touring PHEV but according to the rumors, the news about the 2022 model should come by the end of the year 2021, and relative to that the 2022 Lincoln Corsair Grand Touring PHEV might see the authorized showroom at authorized the beginning of the 2022 summers.

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

Regarding its powertrain, the 2022 Lincoln Corsair PHEV features a 2.5L Inline-4 paired with a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor. For the most part, this SUV draws power from its electric motor first, unless the owner forgot to charge it. If the battery runs out, the vehicle switches to the regular gas engine to continue working. Combined, they produce around 266 horsepower, which is slightly less than its competitors.

Power is delivered through a CVT transmission, and the all-wheel-drive system remains standard. It has a lightweight body that helps it jump from 0-60 in just over seven seconds. As far as acceleration goes, we are slightly disappointed by its performance, as many of its competitors are more efficient. All of its rivals here come with a Turbocharged engine which helps them to achieve those figures with ease. In a hybrid or electric vehicle, you would usually expect the sprint to happen much faster, but in this case, it wasn't as fast as expected.

When it comes to prices, all of these SUVs will have somewhat similar pricing. The vehicles are also equipped with an AWD drivetrain as a standard feature. A CVT transmission will be the only transmission available on the Corsair PHEV here. In terms of acceleration, the Corsair PHEV is among the slowest SUVs here. From a standstill, it takes approximately 7 seconds to reach 60MPH, whereas its rivals can do the same in under 6 seconds. Nevertheless, the winner here is the Audi Q5 PHEV with a 0-60 time of 5.0 seconds.

Fuel Economy
4.0/10

For plug-in hybrids or fully electric vehicles, fuel range is one of the most hotly debated classes. Vehicles that top this range are very likely to generate more sales and become popular. In this case, the 2022 Lincoln Corsair PHEV performs better than its German competitors by a wide margin. The battery by itself can provide a range of 28 miles and combined with the gas engine it can provide a range of 78 miles.

By far the most fuel-efficient car is the Lincoln Corsair PHEV, with a combined range of 78 miles and besides having the lowest fuel tank capacity, it is still able to provide a combined range of 429 miles which is the best number in the competition. Second in the competition is the Audi Q8 Hybrid, which claims a decent 68 miles with the combined gas & electric powertrain and its biggest in the segment fuel tank gives it an upper advantage.

Interior
8.0/10

From the outside, the 2022 Lincoln Corsair looks quite attractive and modern; the same goes for the interior. The cabin of the Lincoln is amazingly spacious, boasting all the latest amenities and comfort features. Corsair PHEV interiors are reminiscent of those found in the gas-powered Corsair. However, electric carmakers nowadays often opt for simple, minimalist designs. While the Corsair PHEV has a gas engine inside, the layout is the same as regular vehicles, with numerous physical buttons.

As the Corsair PHEV is at the top of the Corsair lineup, you can expect all the advanced features to be included in it. In addition to premium leather covering the seats, dash, steering wheel, door armrests, and other frequently touched areas of this SUV, the build quality of this SUV will be quite good. Additionally, the front ventilated seats can be heated and electrically adjusted in multiple ways. A reclining feature will also be offered in the rear seats, adding to the opulence of the back seat.

In every class, the Lincoln Corsair PHEV is the clear winner here in terms of space. The Corsair PHEV will lead its class in this case by providing ample headroom and legroom at both seating areas. When comfort and space are your priorities, you can blindly choose Corsair PHEV over its competitors. Similarly, the largest cargo space is provided by the Corsair PHEV, followed by the BMW X3 PHEV that trails behind by just 0.3 cubic feet. Some of the standout interior features are as follows:

  • Trip computer
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Remote trunk release
  • Electrochromatic rearview mirror
  • Heated & power-folding ORVMs with memory settings
  • Driver & passenger-side illuminated vanity mirror
  • Leather seats
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Power-adjustable steering wheel
  • Wireless smartphone charger
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control

How intuitive is the infotainment system?

Like any modern car, the 2022 Lincoln Corsair PHEV infotainment system is well equipped. However, it lacks the intuitiveness of its German rivals, which are experts in this field. But still, it enjoys the majority of the top-of-the-line features as standard equipment. There's an 8.0-inch floating touchscreen that comes with Apple Carplay and Android Auto.

Ford SYNC3 is installed in this vehicle, which is a dated version of the software, and the Ford SYNC 4 system is expected to debut this year. There are 14 Revel audio systems throughout the cabin, which deliver crystal-clear sound even at low volumes. A few other features are USB-B and USB-C charging ports, Satellite radio, voice command, Bluetooth and Navigation, Wireless Charging, and more. Some of the highlights of the infotainment system are as follows:

  • 8.0-inch floating touchscreen display
  • Apple Carplay and Android Auto smartphone integration
  • 14-speaker Revel audio system
  • Navigation system
  • Voice commands
  • Wireless charging pad
  • AM/FM stereo with HD & satellite radio
  • Wifi hotspot connectivity

Exterior
8.0/10

Like its predecessor, the 2022 Lincoln Corsair PHEV will be regarded as one of the most attractive SUVs in its class. Overall, it has a very sharp and straightforward appearance. The front fascia has two slim LED headlamps with LED DRLs placed below the headlamps. The Lincoln front grille also has blue accents that distinguish it from the regular gas-powered Corsair. The adaptive suspension system offers a comfy ride quality on the rough patches and the LED turn signals on the ORVMs enhance the exterior styling.

The side profile is also well sculpted and precisely finished. Window frames are borderline chrome-finished, which makes them look very luxurious at first glance. A part of this SUV that we found most interesting was its taillights which were connected by thin horizontal LED strips that made it look really cool. In addition to the 19.0-inch aluminum wheels standard on the PHEV trim level, it is also possible to upgrade to 20.0-inch wheels with magnetic pockets for an extra $2,000.

The Lincoln Corsair is the lightest in the segment with a curb weight of just 4,100 pounds, the other three vehicles are fluctuating between 4500 to 4700 pounds. With the least length, height, and the widest body stance, the Lincoln Corsair will experience less body roll. It would be relatively hard to maneuver a BMW X3 PHEV in tight traffic with a wheelbase of 106.7 inches. It would be a piece of cake for Corsair PHEV. Some of the standout exterior features are as follows:

  • Powered tailgate
  • Heated mirrors
  • LED Headlamps With LED DRL’s
  • Chrome finish in windows
  • 19.0-inch aluminum wheels
  • Signature front grille with blue accents

Safety
8.0/10

No independent crash tests have been performed on the PHEV trim level by safety agencies. The NHTSA awarded Lincoln Corsair gas trim levels a perfect 5-star rating in the overall crash test for the 2021 model. IIHS has also given it an overall ‘Good’ score and stated the Corsair as the ‘Top Safety Pick’ for the year 2021.

Overall, these achievements suffice to demonstrate the SUV's quality and rigidity. As with the gas-powered Corsair, the PHEV will also have similar ratings because the Powertrain is the only difference between the two. Safety-wise, this SUV has plenty of modern-day features and advanced collision prevention systems that will be described in detail below:

  • Blind-spot warning accident avoidance system
  • Pre-collision safety system
  • Post-collision safety system
  • Emergency braking preparation
  • Lane departure warning with accident avoidance system
  • Adaptive cruise control

Competition
7.0/10

2022 Lincoln Corsair PHEV vs 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e

The performance of the Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e is the area where it outperforms the Lincoln Corsair PHEV. Its combined powertrain produces much more acceleration and power than the Corsair and it’s not the only factor, one must consider the signature luxurious cabin of the Mercedes-Benz. On the other hand, the Corsair offers more range and comfort. Consequently, we would not recommend the GLC 350e on those aspects, since the Corsair dominated most of the time.

2022 Lincoln Corsair PHEV vs 2021 BMW X3 PHEV

The BMW X3 PHEV is overall a very good SUV with superior performance and handling. But, it lacks behind Corsair PHEV when it comes to fuel range and spaciousness. The price of these two SUVs is also on the same page which makes it difficult to choose one over another. In this case, it will be totally up to the buyers depending on their choice. If you want more power with superb handling, then X3 will be the one for you. While the Corsair is very likely to impress you with its class-leading fuel range and comfort.

2022 Lincoln Corsair PHEV vs 2021 Audi Q5 Hybrid

The Audi Q5 is a very tough competitor for the 2022 Lincoln Corsair PHEV. The Q5 is a very well-equipped SUV with very good specs and figures which outperforms Corsair in every other way. In terms of interior space and combined range though Corsair takes the lead. Other than that, the Q5 will surely provide you better value and it will overall be a good investment for you to take over Corsair.

Final Verdict

The new Lincoln Corsair PHEV is undoubtedly a great SUV for regular buyers since it offers comfort and luxury in equal measure. Due to its position at the top of Corsair's lineup, it comes with the majority of its features as standard. Furthermore, you have the option to add plenty of other luxury features to the room at an additional cost. As with the previous SUV, this model also boasts a class-leading combined range of 78 miles. Generally speaking, it seems like a great SUV to drive with the family while saving fuel costs.

Nevertheless, it's slightly behind its competitors, such as the Audi Q5, which will not let you down if you desire performance and one more thing is that Lincoln hasn’t announced any details regarding the 2022 model of the Grand Touring Hybrid version of the Corsair. If they still say anything about the upcoming model then it will be corresponding to the current one. So to wait for the upcoming vehicle would not be a wise decision, instead of that step out and buy the 2021 Lincoln Corsair PHEV.
