Overview

Apart from the history which dates back to 1979, 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class belongs to the second-generation model released in 2019. The 2022 G-Class will have the traditional squared or boxy design which is noticeable no matter when it goes. Filled with high-quality materials, the interior screams luxury as soon as you enter the cabin. Mercedes-Benz has put emphasis on safety, so that no matter where you are driving, on-road or off-road, advanced safety features and assistance functions will aid you.

Buying Advice

The 2022 G-class has only one basic trim. Therefore, you can go with the suitable optional packages as per your requirements.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The G550 is the only trim that you can go for in the G-Class SUV. It has the 4.0 Liter V8 Bi-Turbo engine which punches out 416 hp. However, if you want a more powerful engine, the G-Class also has an AMG G 63 variant. The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has cut-throat competition against Land Rover Range Rover Autobiography, Lincoln Navigator L, and it also competes with Toyota Land Cruiser.

Features

There will be only one trim available on the 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class. The G550 trim is furnished with all necessary and advanced features to make your life easier and give a better driving experience. It is expected to have a starting price of $132,650. 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-ClassRelease Date

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

As per the EPA estimates the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is best in class for fuel economy as long as it’s driven in the city. On the highway, it returns 19 mpg and 18 mpg combined. With a fuel tank capacity of 26.4 gallons, G-Class will provide a decent range but rivals like Navigator which has the biggest fuel tank in the competition will give the best in class range.

After a thorough evaluation, it is clear that Land Cruiser is the thirstiest SUV which also has the least fuel tank capacity. Navigator returns the 16/20/17 mpg in the city/highway/combined but with the 16/21/18 mpg in the city/highways/combined, Range Rover comes out as the most fuel-efficient SUV in the segment.

Interior
9.6/10

You will get a value-for-money interior in the 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class. The materials used in the cabin are of top quality and everything is well organized. You will notice the natural grain walnut wood trim on the center console and door panels which adds an exquisite flavor to the interior. You can also opt for the other wood trim to suit your taste. The seats are covered in leather upholstery which can be upgraded to Nappa leather. G Manufaktur Upholstery also has multiple options to choose from. The dash is driver-oriented as it is easy to see the infotainment screen and use other controls. You can have the optional two-tone dashboard which will make the interior spicier. The steering wheel is covered in Nappa leather and the armrests also have a leather covering for comfort.

Front seats and rear seats are heated but front seats have 10-way power adjustment, power lumbar support, and memory function. The massage and ventilation functions are optional. Rear seats can fold into a 40/60 fashion which increases the cargo space from 38.1 cu-ft to 68.6 cu-ft. Tri-zone automatic climate control, power tilt and telescopic, 64-color ambient lighting, solar plus noise insulation glass, Homelink garage door opener, frameless rearview mirror, and three power outlets are some of the creature comfort that will be offered in the 2022 G550’s cabin.

The seating capacity of all the SUVs in the competition is 5 except for the Navigator which can seat two extra passengers. This extra seating capacity explains the higher length against the fellow opponents. Even though G-Class has the highest headroom in both rows, the lack of shoulder room is a bit of concern.

However, with the biggest cargo space in the competition, G-class grabs few more points on the report card. On the other hand, the most spacious second row belongs to the Navigator but it lacks the rear headroom. Land Cruiser has the smallest trunk in the competition while the trunk capacity of the Range Rover is 13.6 cu-ft less than what's offered on the G-Class. Key highlights of the interior features are:

  • Heated leather seats
  • Nappa leather upholstery (optional)
  • Ventilated front seats with massage function (optional)
  • Tri-zone climate control with air purification
  • Power tilt and telescopic steering wheel
  • Privacy glass
  • Stainless steel running boards
  • Keyless start and ignition
  • All-season floor mats (optional)
  • 64-color LED ambient lighting
  • Illuminated front door sills

How intuitive is the car’s infotainment unit?

The 2022 G-class will have a COMAND infotainment system which will feature a 12.3-inch touchscreen display with the rotary controller to make things easier. The overall system is user-friendly, has a modern feel, and is responsive.

You also have features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM. A 15-speaker Burmester surround sound system is provided for the high quality of music. Some other standard features are HD radio, two USB ports, Bluetooth, voice control, SD card reader, and a 12.3-inch instrument cluster.

  • 12.3-inch central touchscreen
  • 15-speaker speaker Burmester surround sound system
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • SiriusXM
  • Navigation system
  • In-car-wifi (optional)

Exterior
9.6/10

The boxy exterior design of the 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class will remain unchanged as it has been for many years. At the front, a round LED intelligent light system headlights along with the LED DRLs, and stainless steel brush guard makes the appearance more classy and rugged. The Grill has a chrome accent to complement the look. The side profile is not very complicated, which makes the design language very easy to understand.

On the backside, a wheel is placed and a trailer hitch is provided to pull the load up to 7,000 lbs. 2022 G-Class G550 will be running on the 19-inch 8-spoke wheels but you can replace them with the optional 18-inch 5-spoke wheels. The power tilt/sliding glass sunroof is standard and lets you enjoy an exceptional ride under the wide sky. The power outside mirrors has a heating and power-folding function.

Navigator is the biggest SUV in the segment while if you exclude the height and ground clearance, G-class is the smallest one. With the biggest wheelbase in the segment, Navigator will have a hard time in parking as compared to other rivals but the ride would be more comfortable on the off-road since it has the class-leading ground clearance of 9.6 inches and it is also the longest one. Range Rover is the lightest and shortest one in the bunch which will help in its performance. The Land Cruiser has modest exterior dimensions which place it in between the Range Rover and G-class. Key highlights of the exterior features are:

  • 19-inch 8-spoke wheels
  • LED headlights
  • Power tilt and sliding glass sunroof
  • Rear window wiper
  • Stainless steel running boards
  • Electrically heated windscreen
  • Rain-sensing windscreen wipers
  • Outside-mirror logo projectors

Safety
8.0/10

There are no safety ratings available for the Mercedes-Benz G-Class or for the 2021 model but since the G-Class has been used for military purposes, its rigid chassis and tough cabin will ensure your safety during the crash. That said, the G-Class will be equipped with a number of basic and advanced safety plus driving assistance features. Some of these include attention assist, brake assist, blind-spot assist, rear cross-traffic alerts, PRE-SAFE, trailer stability assist, Active Lane, Keeping Assist, and Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC cruise control. Key highlights of the safety features include:

  • 10 airbags
  • Trailer stability assist
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Speed limit assist
  • Active brake assist
  • PRE-SAFE sound
  • Night security illumination
  • Adaptive braking technology
  • Active lane-keeping assist

Competition
9.0/10

2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class vs 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser

In terms of power and performance, Land Cruiser has definitely lost the bet. Even the fuel economy and interior space are much better in the G-Class as compared to the Toyota Land Cruiser but all of this comes at a cost that is $132,650 which is $46,985 more than the price of the Land Cruiser.

2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class vs 2021 Lincoln Navigator L

The Lincoln Navigator L is a tough competitor who is faster, more fuel-efficient, and has a better power figure than the G-Class. But when it comes to the interior space in the first two rows or trunk capacity, G-Class has the edge.

However, with a price difference of $31,325 and a higher seating capacity, Navigator L is a better choice provided you are ready to comprise the level of luxury.

2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class vs 2021 Land Rover Range Rover

The G-Class tries to go against the Land Rover Range Rover with slightly better cabin space and stable driving along with impressive driving capabilities but if you consider the fuel economy both SUVs have close competition.

But the Range Rover gives better mileage than the G-Class and also has bigger exterior dimensions. That said, the Range Rover still costs $11,850 more than the G-Class.

Final Verdict

Competition is tough but if you want an SUV which is an all-rounder and has a rich history that is decades old, you can definitely bring the new Mercedes-Benz G-Class home provided you are not bothered by the price tag. However, if you are looking for an alternative to the classic G-Class then Lincoln Navigator L is the best option for you which has the upper hand in almost all areas.
