Overview

With a major refresh in 2021, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class is all fresh with thoroughly updated interiors and exteriors. While its trim-level remains mostly the same, the earlier AMG E-43 bids adieu and is now replaced by the all-new AMG E53 sedan. The all-new E53 sedan marks the entry point to the AMG territory now and sits between the regular E-class lineup and the more powerful AMG E63.

Buying Advice

Owing to Mercedes’ exclusive line-up with ascending performance hierarchy, the 2022 Mercedes-AMG E53 sedan is available as a standalone trim. The 2022 Mercedes-AMG E53 Sedan comes with a plethora of features as standard and if you fancy any optional extras like an exclusive exterior paint job, carbon-fiber trim inserts, exclusive leather upholstery in the interior, these options are always available to be chosen by you but turns out you actually need to shell out a considerable amount of money as these features don’t come for cheap.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Although in the stores now as a 2021 model, the all-new Mercedes-Benz AMG E53 sedan would roll into its 2022 model year with no major changes. While the new updated E-Class already sets the bar higher among midsize luxury sedans with its comfort, opulence, and advanced tech, the E53 pours in a bit of extra vigor to its character. At a starting MSRP of around $75,000, the 2022 Mercedes-AMG E53 sedan has just the right mix of elegance and energy at this price point. However, the Audi S6, and the refreshed Genesis G80, and Maserati Ghibli present a good competition for the esteemed Merc here.

Features

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG E 53 Sedan comes in a single trim level known as the E 53 4Matic+ Sedan which directly signifies that it comes equipped with an all-wheel-drive system. It is priced at $75,000 and comes with a plethora of standard features along with. There aren’t any significant changes to the 2022 version when compared to the 2021 version apart from the slight updates to the infotainment system.

For its price and stature, the E53 Sedan comes with a host of optional extras for both exterior and interior styling. Options include exclusive paint jobs, interior leather upholstery, and some added creature comforts which might make the E53 Sedan an even better car. However, these options turn out to be quite expensive which might not be suitable for a lot of potential customers to opt for.

Which Trim Should You Buy?

Owing to Mercedes’ exclusive line-up with ascending performance hierarchy, the 2022 Mercedes-AMG E53 sedan is available as a standalone trim. 2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG E 53 Release Date

While a final confirmation regarding the release date is yet to be made, it is speculated that the 2022 Mercedes-AMG E53 will make its way to the dealerships by the Fall of 2021.

Fuel Economy
2.0/10

With an impressive hybrid powertrain unit developed with AMG’s F1 hybrid tech, the E 53 Sedan offers the best fuel economy and range figures in the segment. It offers a combined fuel economy of 25 miles per gallon and delivers 22 and 29 MPG in the city and highway road conditions respectively.

With a range-topping fuel tank capacity of 21.1 gallons, the E 53 Sedan offers a combined fuel range of 527.5 miles making it the only sedan in its segment that offers a combined fuel range of more than 500 miles. It also delivers a maximum fuel range of 611.9 miles on the highway which is a really impressive feat by the AMG.

Although the Audi S6 also comes with a hybrid powertrain unit, it doesn’t offer a fuel economy that matches that of the E 53 Sedan which makes the E 53 the best option to go for if fuel economy is one of your top priorities. All the cars in the segment offer a combined fuel range of fewer than 450 miles while the E 53 offers 527.5 miles.

Interior
2.0/10

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG E 53 Sedan’s interior design and layout seem outwardly with its big display units on the dashboard and an abundance of carbon fiber inside (if you opt for carbon fiber trim inserts!). As standard though, you do get leather upholstery with the executive fit and finish of a Mercedes. The dashboard looks like a work of art with the signature circular HVAC vents and a beautiful blend of metal, wood, or carbon-fiber inserts based upon your choice. Two large screens occupy a majority of the dashboard’s real estate and hence there aren’t many buttons on the dashboard as a majority of the controls are included in the infotainment system and steering wheel. In case you are a bit forgetful, the racy sporty black and red accents around the cabin constantly remind you that you’re seated in an AMG.

The front sport bucket seats are 10-way power-adjustable with heating and Mercedes-AMG leatherette upholstery. The seats offer a good amount of room and lumbar support along with heating and ventilation for optimum comfort on your long road trips. Features like the dual-zone automatic climate control unit and front row sunroof further add to the feel and comfort of the interior while the glove box with integrated coolbox and storage space underneath the front row armrest add to the convenience and comfort inside the interior. The second-row seats are 40-20-40 split-bench seats with a decent amount of room and comfort. Though you do get a rear center armrest, the slightly restricted legroom at the back may leave taller occupants with a desire for some extra room.

Apart from the rear-seat legroom, the 2022 Mercedes-AMG E53 sedan is also a bit tighter in terms of cargo capacity. The trunk capacity has a volume of 13.1 cu-ft. which certainly could have been better. Thankfully, the trunk gets a wide cargo entry and remote power access as a convenience feature.

The Maserati Ghibli Modena clearly has the best in class cargo capacity of 17.7 cu.-ft and also has a spacious interior although the data isn’t available to compare. All the cars in the segment have considerably roomy interior space compared to the E 53 Sedan which is the only drawback on the AMG’s side. Some of the standout interior features include:

  • Dual-Zone automatic climate control unit
  • Metal and brown ash wood trim inserts
  • AMG sports leather steering wheel
  • Heated front seats
  • 10-way power-adjustable front seats
  • MB-Tex upholstery
  • Glove box with integrated coolbox

What’s there to keep you entertained?

Mercedes-AMG never fails to impress their customers when it comes to their infotainment system. They offer one of the best infotainment systems in the industry today with apparently every feature available as standard. The 2022 Mercedes-AMG E 53 Sedan gets the latest and updated MBUX infotainment system with a giant 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display unit as well as a smaller driver’s display unit on the dashboard.

As features, the infotainment system gets the latest Mercedes-Benz ME to connect feature, ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice control, SiriusXM satellite radio, navigation, and a lot more. The music system is a premium Burmester surround sound system which enhances the driving experience to another level. Connectivity features include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and a wireless charging pad as well. Some of the standout infotainment features on offer are:

  • In-built navigation
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • Latest MBUX infotainment system
  • 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display unit
  • Bluetooth phone connectivity
  • ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice control
  • Mercedes Me connect
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Burmester Surround sound system

Exterior
5.0/10

The Mercedes-AMG E 53 Sedan got a redesigned exterior styling for the 2021 model year version which certainly makes it a looker. The 2022 version doesn’t get any changes or redesigned bits on the exterior and comes with stealthy AMG-inspired looks and exterior design elements.

The 19-inch AMG 5-spoke wheels with gray accents and smoked all-LED headlamps with striking daytime running LED lights to give it a stealthy and sporty look that complements its driving characteristics and stance. The LED tail lamps and the smooth yet sharp side profile give it a recognizable look. The E 53 Sedan also has one of the lowest wheelbase lengths in the segment which helps it handle better on the corners and cityscapes but does make the interior snug and small comparatively.

Among the competition here, the Genesis G80 3.5T has the longest wheelbase in the segment of 118.5 inches, which does help it by adding more interior space and cargo capacity compared to the E 53. The Maserati Ghibli Modena on the other hand has the right proportions for a sports Sedan and hence also offers the best in class trunk capacity as well. Additionally, the Mercedes-AMG sits lower than its competitors and has a ground clearance of 4.5 inches. The Audi S6 is marginally smaller than all of its competitors, yet it sports the highest curb weight of 4486 lbs. Some of the standard exterior features include:

  • 19-inch AMG 5 spoke wheels with grey accents
  • AMG exterior design elements
  • Carbon fiber exterior elements
  • Directionally adaptive LED projector headlamps
  • Cornering lights
  • Dual stainless exhaust pipe with chrome tailpipe finishers

Safety
4.0/10

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG E 53 Sedan hasn’t been rated for safety by agencies like NHTSA and IIHS as of now, but we can certainly be assured that safety ratings won’t be a concern while opting for the E 53 as Mercedes-AMG put their best engineering and design methods and practices in to use while developing their AMG products and hence the E 53 certainly will be one of the safest options available.

It does come with a host of safety features to help aid in safety along with the usual standard features like Anti-Lock Braking System and Traction Control system. The E 53 Sedan gets safety features such as Blind Spot Warning System, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Crosswind Electric-Assist Electronic Stability Control, and more to help keep the occupants safe and sound throughout their journeys. Some of the notable safety features include:

  • Tire Specific Low Tire Pressure Warning
  • Side Impact beams
  • Blind Spot Warning System
  • Aerial View Camera System
  • Active parking assistance
  • Autonomous Emergency Braking
  • Crosswind Electric-Assist Electronic Stability Control

Competition
3.0/10

2022 Mercedes-AMG E 53 Sedan vs. 2022 Audi S6

The Audi S6 is certainly the arch-enemy of the Mercedes-AMG E 53 Sedan as it also comes with a hybrid powertrain unit and an infotainment system and driving aids that rival the ones available in the E 53. The Audi is also priced similarly to that of the E 53 Sedan and provides more room inside its cabin. But the E 53 Sedan seems to have better driving dynamics and fuel economy and range figures, and the AMG-inspired design elements inside out make it much more attractive.

2022 Mercedes-AMG E 53 Sedan vs. 2021 Maserati Ghibli Modena

The Maserati Ghibli Modena is the costliest option in the segment and doesn’t come with a hybrid powertrain unit like the Mercedes-AMG E 53 Sedan. The Maserati does have a more sporty exhaust note and some Italian design elements that are worth paying for, but the lesser fuel economy figures, comparatively primitive infotainment system, and exterior design elements make it less appealing compared to the E 53.

2022 Mercedes-AMG E 53 Sedan vs. 2021 Genesis G80 3.5T

The Genesis G80 3.5T is one of the cheapest options to purchase in the segment and has a host of attractive exterior and interior features that come with it. But it doesn’t have the sporty driving dynamics and necessary driving aids to help it perform as well as the E 53 Sedan. The E 53 Sedan also has better infotainment and interior features as well as the best in class fuel economy and range figures that the Genesis isn’t able to compete with.

Final Verdict

The new Mercedes-Benz AMG E 53 Sedan is meant for those who wish to have the premium features that accompany a Mercedes-Benz E-class Sedan and the sportiness and excitement that an AMG car provides. The E 53 Sedan seems to be the perfect choice to go for in the segment with its attractive price range, a hybrid powertrain unit that offers both performance and impressive fuel economy, as well as the best in class interior features and infotainment features that just make the E 53 worth every penny.
