Overview

The Mercedes-Benz GLC Class has been one of the best-sellers of the brand for a while. Despite being a fairly new entrant in the market, the SUV garnered huge popularity owing to its outlandish performance while offering most of the attributes of a conventional SUV. The Mercedes-AMG GLC 63, with its insane amount of power under the hood, is propelled by a robust and handcrafted AMG Bi-turbo V8 engine

Buying Advice

Among Mercedes' most recognized and admired lines of vehicles are their GLC Class SUVs. It's also worth mentioning that the GLC 63 SUV is a performance version of the standard one that houses a V8 and gives off insane performance. Considering this model itself is a trim, and you're looking for an SUV with plenty of practicality and sporty soul, the AMG GLC 63 is an option to consider.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The SUV is built on the Mercedes-Benz MRA platform which it shares with the Mercedes-Benz C Class and the all-new Mercedes-Benz EQC. Additionally, it will also have a coupe-like body variant that will cost a bit more and will be covered in a separate review. According to Mercedes, the GLC 63 SUV will cost around $74,000, putting it in competition with the Porsche Macan Turbo S, BMW X3 M, and the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio.

Features

The Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 is the performance-focused trim in the GLC Class lineup. It comes standard with a bi-turbo 4.0L AMG V8 engine that produces around 469 horsepower. Additionally, it is fitted with an AMG Air Ride suspension system as well as some other features that enhance its performance. With a good amount of luxury features, it is priced at almost $74,000. Its list of features includes Navigation, Heated seats, tri-zone automatic climate control, AMG 4MATIC+ drivetrain, Power Liftgate, 20.0-inch AMG wheels, and much more.

2022 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 Release date

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 is expected to hit the dealerships by the fourth quarter of 2021.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

Considering the power and acceleration of its engine, we thought that this SUV would be compelled to make compromises in this area. This time around, the Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 63’s performance was surprising. With a single gallon of gas, it travels up to 16 miles in the city, while 22 miles can be covered on the highways.

The combined fuel MPG of the AMG GLC 63 will again be around 18 miles, which is quite impressive. Despite having a powerful engine under its hood, it managed to achieve a higher fuel economy than some competitors. Even the fuel tank is big enough, at 17.4 gallons, to offer decent driving range numbers.

Coming to the competitors, the fuel economy numbers are more or less similar owing to the brands gunning for squeezing out the maximum fuel efficiency from the powertrains of their vehicles while retaining the performance levels. The Alfa Romeo Stelvio gets the smallest gas tank of 16.9 gallons while the Porsche Macan Turbo gets the biggest gas tank at 19.8 gallons.

Hence, the Macan Turbo offers the best driving range figures of 376 miles, closely followed by the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio. The BMW X3 M averages the least efficiency of 16 MPG and with a smallish fuel tank, its range feels underwhelming in comparison to its direct competitors.

Interior
5.0/10

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 63 interior was pretty new and well equipped, we believe Mercedes will likely carry this over into the upcoming model. To begin with, the front doors open quite wide for easy entry; the rear ones, however, are a bit tight. From the moment you step onboard, you will experience leather bolstered seats that can be electronically adjusted for maximum comfort as well as memory settings. Moreover, all the controls and buttons are positioned to ensure the driver's comfort. Several carbon fiber elements can also be found on the dash, and frequently used touchpoints feature soft-touch materials.

However, some noise gets into the cabin when the engine is pushed hard, making for an enjoyable experience. Front and rear seats provide ample space and even 6-footers can make themselves comfortable without bumping their heads on the roof or having their knees touch the seatbacks. Compared to other SUVs, however, the GLC 63 has a cargo space measured at 24.3 cubic feet, which is reasonable but not exceptional.

The BMW X3 M has the most spacious cabin here along with the maximum cargo space of 28.7 cu.-ft. The cabin of the X3 is covered with plush and comfortable leather and would cocoon you inside despite all the rush and chaos outside. The Porsche Macan Turbo also gets a well-equipped and spacious cabin too but feels a bit compact when compared to the segment rivals. The Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio has a strictly driver-focused cabin hence all the comfort and convenience features are available and fit within the reach of the driver. Some key features of the interior are mentioned below:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Carbon fibre elements
  • Heated seats with memory function
  • Tri-Zone Automatic Climate Controls
  • Ventilated front seats (optional)
  • 64-color LED ambient lighting/AMG illuminated front door sills

What’s there to keep you entertained?

For the infotainment part, the Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 63 is equipped with two digital screens inside its cabin to carry out the functions. Upfront, a 10.25-inch touch screen display is mounted that is integrated with MBUX software which has a logical and easy layout to function with. Another 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster display is also there for giving the driver information regarding the vehicle.

The information screen can be operated by a touchpad, scroll key on the steering wheel, touch, or through voice command which activates after saying “Hey Mercedes”. Other than that, some other features include Apple Carplay & Android Auto, Navigation, Burmester sound system, front bass booster, etc. Some optional features include in-car WiFi, Wireless Charging, MBUX interior assistant, and AMG head-up display. Some key infotainment features are:

  • 10.25” Dual Touch Screen Display
  • Apple Carplay & Android Auto
  • Lexus Enform Remote
  • Navigation
  • Burmester Sound System
  • Voice Command Feature

Exterior
4.0/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 63 exterior design has all the elements of an SUV and the showcase of all that power lurking under the sculpted hood of the vehicle. In terms of design changes or any new features, the 2022 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 is not expected to be any different. The front signature grille of AMG with vertical lines accentuates the GLC 63's overall profile. The AMG GT 63 uses the same grille, which is vertically longer, while the GLC 63 SUVs grille is much wider.

The SUV has LED headlamps and DRLs, 20.0-inch AMG twin 5-spoke wheels, a power tailgate, roof rails, etc. Among the optional features are 21.0-inch wheels and a panorama sunroof. You can also choose the exterior lighting package available in this SUV. It adds features such as Intelligent Light System headlamps and Adaptive Highbeam Assist for about $800.

*Some data in the tables has been taken from 2021 MY, since 2022 MY's official figures have not been released yet.

The wheelbase of the GLC 63 is the longest in the segment of 113.1 inches, which leads to the most spacious cabin in that vehicle. Other than that, the dimensions of this SUV are very similar to those of its rivals. With its ground clearance measuring 8.0 inches, the BMW X3 M provides the most ground clearance compared to the GLC 63, which has a slightly smaller ground clearance. The Mercedes-AMG is also one of the heavier vehicles in the segment weighing 4,546 lbs. Some standout exterior features are:

  • Power tailgate
  • Heated and Power-Folding Adjustable Mirrors
  • Panoramic Sunroof (optional)
  • LED Headlamps With LED DRL’s
  • Roof Rails
  • Signature AMG Grille
  • 20.0-inch AMG 5-spoke wheels

Safety
7.0/10

The NHTSA and IIHS have not yet tested the 2021 GLC 63. When we look at the GLC Class SUV from 2020, it received a Good rating in IIHS tests, as well as the Top Safety Pick award. In 2019, the NHTSA gave this SUV a full five-star rating. These ratings represent the normal GLC Class SUVs, but since the GLC 63 is a performance version of the standard one, the same will also apply.

Regarding features, Mercedes here reserved a long list of safety features for this SUV. The advanced ones, however, are included in the Driver Assistance package, which costs $1,800 more. With a price tag of $74,00, it becomes evident that a buyer would be willing to pay an additional 1,800 for those safety features. The move from Mercedes is a clever one, you could say, to increase revenue. Nevertheless, some of the safety features are mentioned below:

  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Attention assist
  • Crosswind assist
  • Pre-Collision Safety System
  • Post-Collision Safety System
  • Emergency Braking Preparation
  • Blind Spot Warning Accident Avoidance System

Competition
5.0/10

2022 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 vs 2021 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio hails from Italy, and it carries one of the most important traits of Italian cars along with it, and that is "Speed." Yes, it is much faster than the GLC 63 when compared. Despite that, the GLC 63 is not much farther than it. The GLC 63 also costs significantly less and has a superior infotainment system and overall luxury. Therefore, we recommend the GLC 63 due to its lower price and better value proposition.

2022 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 vs 2021 Porsche Macan Turbo S

Compared to the GLC 63 SUV, the Porsche Macan Turbo S is almost 10 grand more expensive. However, the Macan provides superb handling and it always feels great to drive it, no matter the conditions. However, the GLC 63 still appears to be a better vehicle on paper and it is better than the Macan in terms of speed and cost. In this case, the GLC 63 SUV is the obvious winner.

2022 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 vs 2021 BMW X3 M

This BMW X3 M is surprised by its performance with an inline-6 engine. Even though GLC 63 is equipped with a V8, the X3 came extremely close to the GLC 63 in terms of performance. The X3 is even more affordable than the competition and offers the best driving dynamics in its class. As well, the X3 has a greater number of standard safety features. On the other hand, the GLC 63 is undoubtedly a little faster and even more economical. While it is very hard to pick a single winner in this case, we would choose X3 here due to its lower price and better availability of features as standard.

Final Verdict

After its release, the new Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 63 SUV will remain one of the most prominent SUVs in its class. The SUV will be the only one in its class to have a V8 under its hood and be one of the fastest in its class. Adding more standard safety features is all we expect from this model year GLC 63, which is currently exclusive to the Driver Assistance package. Aside from this, this SUV excels in every other area such as space for passengers, comfort features, and gas mileage that is among the best in its class.
