Overview

The performance-oriented BMW X5 is here with its mid-cycle updates. For 2022, the X5 will remain mostly unchanged in terms of mechanicals as it received a generation change in 2019 when it was revamped from the ground up. The 2022 BMW X5 may offer certain cosmetic updates with its bumpers and headlamps. There are 3 trim levels to choose from. For the love of performance, there's an M Sport trim as well. From 2021 onwards, the PHEV version is offered with a six-cylinder engine separately. All the trims offer immaculate performance and an unmatchable driving experience. The interior will get minor touch-ups and upgrades to the already well-equipped cabin.

  • 2022 BMW X5 starts at $59,400 for sDrive40i | Compare Trims and Prices

The 2022 BMW X5 might touch the $60,000 mark for the base sDrive40i trim. The price might shoot up to $83,000 if we talk about the M50i trim. BMW has new plans as there's a rumored hydrogen-cell-powered trim in the making and may debut soon. The X5 is the first choice in America in the luxury crossover segment. That said, the 2022 X5 will compete with equally capable rivals such as the Audi Q7, Land Rover Discovery, and the Acura MDX.

Buying Advice

We recommend going for the xDrive40i over the standard sDrive40i trim as the former adds a full-time AWD and Servotronic Power Steering Assist. Having said that, the BMW X5 also has a choice of optional packages, but we won’t recommend any as personal requirements and needs are different for every person and thus will leave this on you to decide.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The official price for the 2022 BMW X5 starts from $59,400 for the rear-wheel-drive sDrive40i model and $61,700 for the all-wheel-drive xDrive40i model. The xDrive40i will cost you $2,000 higher than the base trim. The PHEV sits in the middle with its $63,700 price tag. And the top M50i  and M trim will take $82,800 and $105,900 off your pocket. Also, a new hydrogen fuel X5 trim will be added to the lineup by the name of hydrogen NEXT, which is expected to launch at $70,000.

BMW vehicles are generally launched during the summer. We can expect the 2022 BMW X5 to arrive at dealerships within a few months as BMW has already teased the upcoming X5.

Fuel Economy
7.6/10

As the powertrain is carried over from the 2021 X5, the fuel economy will remain the same as the 2022 X5. The 2022 BMW X5 will return around 21 mpg in the city, 26 mpg on the highway, and a combined 23 mpg of gas mileage. With a 21.9-gallon fuel tank, you can expect a range of more than 450 miles in the city, 560 miles on the highway, and a combined range of 500 plus miles.

As for the competitors, the BMW X5 is the most fuel-efficient here with a combined 23 mpg of gas mileage. Next comes Acura MDX with a combined 21 mpg of gas mileage, which is also similar to what Land Rover Discovery offers. The 2022 Audi Q7 happens to be the least efficient here with combined gas mileage of 20 mpg only.

Interior
7.6/10

The interior of the upcoming X5 is mostly unchanged except in the new Black Vermillion special edition model. If we stack it up with the 2021 model, the 2022 X5's interior is unchanged with a luxurious cabin with tons of features. Inside the special edition X5, you will have exclusive badging, black leather seats with red piping, a leather dashboard, carbon fiber trim, and glass controls, among other upgrades. That said, the BMW X5 will be a driver-focused car, and the driver's display might offer a fresh look for 2022. The cabin quality will be phenomenal, with generous use of leather upholstery and chrome accents. Apart from minor nips and tucks, the cabin won’t see any radical changes. The

The cargo capacity is decent as the X5 has up to 33.9 cubic feet of space behind its second row. An optional seven-seat configuration is also available, which can reduce the available cargo space accordingly. As for the competitors, all of them come standard with a three-row setup, so they will have far less cargo space compared to the two-row standard X5.

When it comes to the space offered inside the cabin, it's the Audi Q7 and Acura MDX which are better off compared to the BMW X5 and Land Rover Discovery. Between the latter two, it's more or less the same story as both offers almost similar interior space. That said, it's the Acura MDX which is the most spacious in all three rows compared to the rivals here.

The 2022 BMW X5 will sport a 12.3-inch touchscreen display with the latest iDrive infotainment system. The standard audio setup is a 16-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system. Other standard features include Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM Satellite Radio with a 1-year free subscription, etc.

Highlights of the 2022 BMW X5’s infotainment system include:

  • 12.3-inch Infotainment Screen
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio Compatible
  • Apple CarPlay Compatible
  • HD Radio with “multicast” FM Station Reception
  • AM/FM Stereo with Radio Data System (RDS)
  • HiFi Sound System with 10 Speakers and 205-watt digital Amplifier
  • Enhanced Smartphone Connectivity

Exterior
7.6/10

The big news in the BMW X5's styling is the special edition which is based on the X5 xDrive40i. The new X5 with this special package features black and red accents - Red kidney grille bars complement the blacked-out exterior, unique 22-inch grey wheels with red brake calipers. The exterior design of the new-generation BMW X5 looks sporty yet sleeker design than ever. The jaw-dropping kidney grille looks attractive both in chrome and matte finish. With the new bumper, the thinner fog lamps are a bit upright. The rear fascia might get updated with dual chrome tip exhausts from the current singular one. The 2022 X5 will offer a better chrome treatment to the overall exterior as well. The M Sport package updates the exterior design with gloss paint, 20-inch bi-color alloy wheels, gloss roof rails, aerodynamic kit, and whatnot. You can also avail the 21-inch machine-painted aluminum wheels.

The X5 will maintain its class by keeping things simple with its overall design philosophy. It is already pretty huge as compared to the rivals. With the new platform and a wider wheelbase, the fourth-generation X5 has better handling and balance. It doesn't weigh too much with its V6, but the weight goes up with the V8 engine available in the X5 M. A decent ground clearance allows it to offer mild off-roading capabilities.

Speaking of the dimensions of the BMW X5, the SUV is expected to remain in the same ballpark as the previous model. Thus the X5 would be 194.3-inches long, 78.9-inches wide, and 68.7-inches tall. The wheelbase will be around 117.1-inch, and the ground clearance would be 8.7-inches.To put that into perspective, the Audi Q7 is 5-inches longer than the X5 but around 1-inch less wide with a similar wheelbase.

The Acura MDX on the other hand is 4-inches longer, 1-inch shorter in height, and has 4-inches of lesser wheelbase compared to the X5. The Land Rover Discovery is almost the same length as the X5 but is wider, taller, and has the best-in-class 11.1-inch of ground clearance.

Highlights of the 2022 BMW X5’s exterior are:

  • 20-inch alloy wheels
  • Gloss paint finish
  • Roof Rails
  • BMW Welcome lights
  • Power Folding Heated side mirrors
  • Aero active body components
  • Rear spoiler with center brake light

Safety
9.3/10

The 2021 X5 was the safest SUV in the segment as it offered plenty of active and passive safety features with structural rigidity and strength. The 2022 X5 will walk on the same path, but since we don’t have the crash test rating for it, we would refer to the previous year’s result to give you a fair idea. The 2020 BMW X5 was rated ‘Good’ by the IIHS in almost all categories with superior ratings in front crash prevention.

The IIHS also chose the 2020 X5 for the ‘Top safety pick plus’ award. The 2020 X5 was rated 4 Stars for its safety by the NHTSA. As the 2022 X5 is identical to the 2020 model, it will offer similar safety. The standard safety features include an active driving assistant, active protection detection, adaptive cruise control, park distance control, blind-spot detection, lane departure warning, and much more.

Highlights of the safety features include:

  • Adaptive LED Headlights and Brakelights
  • Front and Rear Parking Distance Control
  • Front Safety Belts with automatic Pre-tensioners
  • Driver and Passenger Front Airbags with dual-stage deployment
  • BMW Assist eCall
  • Automatic Locking Retractors(ALR) on all passenger-seat safety belts
  • Front and Rear Head Protection System(HPS) with side-impact airbags
  • Active Driving Assistant

Competition
8.5/10

2022 BMW X5 vs 2021 Audi Q7

BMW X5 is the most well-equipped SUV in the whole segment. With its standard features and performance, it has been the top player in the market. The Audi Q7 as its German counterpart with its lux cabin, stand-out features, and standard three-row seating is a tough competitor here. The Q7 also with its standard AWD offers better value for money in terms of features, but it is less powerful than the BMW X5. Still, we recommend going for the Audi Q7 for the sake of better practicality and luxury.

2022 BMW X5 vs 2021 Land Rover Discovery

The BMW X5 delivers exceptional performance on the road, and the modern technology-oriented cabin seems next level. The Land Rover Discovery has the best of both worlds i.e., a tough utility vehicle with unbelievable off-road capabilities and equally luxurious on well-paved roads. With its rugged appeal, it can outperform the BMW X5 in many aspects especially off-roads. But the shoddy reliability of the Land Rover as a brand is a big turn-off, which makes it hard to recommend this SUV over the X5.

2022 BMW X5 vs 2022 Acura MDX

The X5 is presented as the most powerful luxury crossover SUV. With its cheaper alternative, the Acura MDX, the X5 gets serious competition as it offers better practicality and touring capabilities at competitive pricing. Not just that, it also offers advanced tech and luxury and starts at far less than the BMW X5. So the Acura MDX, being a better value for money proposition, should be the one you look at.

Final Verdict

The SUV segment changed forever when BMW introduced it's first-ever X5 back in 1999. Since then, it has had a separate fanbase and is offered as a performance-oriented SUV. The 4th generation BMW X5 is far better with its standard features for your convenience and entertainment. With the introduction of the PHEV and Hydrogen cell version, the X5 lineup is all set for the future. The 2022 X5 will hit the dealerships in the summer for you. The price range from $59,400 to $105,900. You have up to 7 optional packages to customize both interior and exterior in terms of appearance and features. Thus this performance-oriented SUV is worth the wait.

              Highly reccomend

Pros - ["Great suspension", "Very powerful", "Great for long trips"]

Cons - ["Leather gets worn easily", "Servicing costs", "Premium gas"]

I love it. It is my first car, and it is amazing. I love driving it, especially at night with the LED Sky Lounge it just makes everything feel so much nicer and is one of the smoothest cars I have ever driven
