Overview

Toyota has brought an all-updated version of the RAV4 for 2020, which now is being underpinned by Toyota’s TNGA platform. The RAV4 (an acronym for Recreational Activity Vehicle) has been the best-selling compact SUV in its segment for some years now. So, a lot of things are at stake, when a manufacturer decides to bring out an updated feature-packed version of the same. The feature list includes the likes of standard Android Auto capability, an upgraded JBL audio system, and Satellite radio.

For 2020, along comes a new RAV4 TRD Pro Off-Road variant, which along with the other variants on offer is also powered by a standard 203 hp 2.5L Inline-4 engine. The structure also gets a rework, as it offers over 50% higher rigidity than the outgoing and improves on the ride and handling dynamics over the previous-gen model. The 2020 Toyota RAV4 Starts at $25,950 for the base FWD LE Variant and goes over $34,480 for the top-of-the-line Limited variant.

Buying Advice

The XLE offers the best value for money proposition for the kind of pricing it is being offered at and the features associated with the same. Toyota has also equipped the RAV4 with some of the best in segment features as standard.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The RAV4 has a comfortable ride, and it gets great fuel economy for the segment. The engine is capable enough for most normal driving situations - Cars.USnews

The RAV4 has been the “Goose that lays Golden Eggs” for Toyota for several years running now. The RAV4 has been a favorite among the masses alike for its practicality, frugality, and performance, all partnered up with a decent price tag. For 2020, Toyota has minorly redesigned the RAV4 and has given it the TNGA-k treatment, seen previously on cars like the Avalon and the Camry. Toyota also offers an upgrade on the safety feature list for this year. Rivals of the same include the likes of the Mazda CX-5, Kia Sorento, and the Hyundai Santa Fe.

Features
7.0/10

Perennially a best-selling SUV, the Toyota RAV4 offers a trim for every budget - Car and Driver

The 2020 Toyota RAV4 comes in a total of 5 trims and gets the option of both FWD and AWD option in all trims, other than the Adventure trim that only comes in AWD configuration. Starting at a price tag of $25,950 for the base trim, the RAV4 goes up to $35,780 for the Limited trim. Toyota has not skimmed on any equipment to be offered from the Base trim onwards. The RAV4 comes with premium features like bucket seats, a big touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple Car Play as standard. Powertrain-wise, all of the said trims are powered by the same 203 hp 2.5L NA unit.

The XLE offers the best value for money proposition for the kind of pricing it is being offered at and the features associated with the same. Toyota has also equipped the RAV4 with some of the best in segment features as standard. Back that with the potent 203 hp engine that is standard across the trim lineup, and thus the XLE does sound as a decent deal.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

The 2020 Toyota RAV4 offers 26 miles to the gallon in the city and about 35 miles to the gallon out on the highway. This is with the FWD offered as standard. Opt for the AWD setup and those figures drop down to 27 and 34 miles to the gallon out on the city and highway respectively. The increment in the engine displacement and overall performance of the 2020 RAV4 has not taken a toll on the fuel economy of the RAV4. Instead, the 2020 RAV4 manages to beat the 2018 RAV4's MPG figures by around 7 MPG.

The reduction in the weight of the 2020 RAV4 thanks to the incorporation of the new TNGA Platform has been one of the big reasons for the incredible MPG figures. For people who want an even more efficient SUV, the 2020 RAV4 Hybrid will be made available to customers around the USA soon as per Toyota.

Interior
6.0/10

The RAV4's busy dashboard has nice materials on most trims and either 7.0- or 8.0-inch touchscreens for infotainment with Apple CarPlay compatibility -TheCarConnection.com

The 2020 Toyota RAV4 has the ability to seat 5 people on board. In terms of the comfort on offer, most people sitting in the back or front won't complain about the lack of space even if the space offered might not be class-leading. We say most because above 6 ft boarders may brush the heads against the roofline of the RAV4 but the moon roof adds to the overall roominess of the cabin. The seats offer good amount of comfort and have a lot of bolstering and support for passengers sitting in the front and back. The seats get heating and cooling functionality and they can be powered adjusted for the front passengers as well.

The 2020 Toyota RAV4 has a lower cargo space as compared to the outgoing model but this is still bigger than what most rivals offer. The 37.6 cu. ft. of storage space can gobble up most of the luggage that people would most want it to carry without much fuss. The RAV4's cargo capacity can be further extended as the rear seats can be folded in a 60/40 configuration. This adds a lot of space in the back and makes room for even more cargo.

The 2020 RAV4 offers one of the best values in terms of the standard infotainment features on offer in its category. The Car features a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard on all trims. Higher trims get a bigger Infotainment System and some more features.

These are the other infotainment system features on the 2020 RAV4

Exterior
8.0/10

If style is at the top of your priority list for a new crossover SUV, the 2020 Toyota RAV4 gets the mini-off-roader look right  -TheCarConnection.com

When it comes to exterior design, the new RAV4 looks the part when we compare it to its rivals. The exteriors of the RAV4 gives it a "Big SUV" feel as the exteriors seem to have taken inspiration from the Tacoma/4Runner. The roof is low as compared to SUV standards but it doesn't make the RAV4 look small because of its design. The Adventure trim gets faux skid plates and also gets the option of contrast roof. What is disappointing to see is the steel wheels on the base variant as that looks a bit out of place from the striking exteriors.

The RAV4's dimensions are smaller when compared to the competition but it doesn't make the compact SUV look compact at all. The small dimensions gives the RAV4 an advantage when it comes to parking in tight spaces or moving through crowded areas. With a massive ground clearance of 8.6 inches, the RAV4 ranks among the potent vehicles to be taken for off-roading.

Safety
8.0/10

Toyota puts safety as one of its top priorities when designing and bringing new cars into the market and the 2020 RAV4 is no different. Toyota also introduces the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 which bundles in a lot of both active and passive safety features as standard. Moreover, both the IIHS and NHTSA have rated the 2020 RAV4 well enough.

Competition
8.5/10

2020 Toyota RAV4 vs 2020 Hyundai Santa-Fe

There is no denying the fact that the Hyundai Santa Fe is one of the Best SUVs in the segment. It flaunts an easy-to-understand infotainment system and one of the best in class storage spaces too. The RAV4 however offers a lot more power on tap as standard and doesn't compromise on the mileage as well. The Hyundai Santa Fe is certainly one of the popular choices for people who want an American crossover SUV in the market. Nevertheless, the RAV4 also has a sophisticated AWD system that works wonders off road.

2020 Toyota RAV4 vs 2020 Mazda CX-5

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 is one of the most Sportiest SUV's in the segment. The Mazda offers one of the best 2nd-row seating arrangements in the class as well. The RAV4 however manages to beat thee CX-5 with its cargo space on offer and the outright power on tap. The Mazda and Toyota rank on same terms when it comes to off road ability and rank among the best in the segment.

Final Verdict

Toyota has minorly updated the feature list of the best-selling RAV4 for 2020 and has taken a tiny step forward with the same in terms of value. The RAV4 now comes with a lot of power and performance with no compromise on MPG figures as well. The RAV4 also looks a lot more SUV-like and butch in stance for the price you are getting it for. All in All, with an all-new platform, upgraded driving dynamics, great performance and practicality, the 2020 Toyota RAV4 is one Compact SUV, that you can't go wrong with.

              Worth every penny

Pros - ["Space, blind spot monitoring, dynamic radar cruise control, integration between your phone and media screen for map navigation while traveling", "Safety features like dynamic radar cruise control and blind spot monitoring"]

Cons - ["Fabric seats", "Nothing else"]

I absolutely adore my 2020 RAV4 XLE. The ease of entry makes it perfect for driving elderly family members to church. The automatic liftgate feature comes in handy picking up the Walmart pick up order or carrying a pet to the vet. The dynamic radar cruise control is perfect for long drives and trips. The blind spot monitor helps when you're merging on the interstate.

              The SUV of the Future

Pros - ["The horsepower", "The city lor"]

Cons - ["The seats are cloth", "Doesn't have remote start"]

The 2019 Toyota RAV4 is a force to be reckon with. It can compete with any sports vehicle on the highway in performance. It goes from 0 to 60 in 12 seconds. The seats are cloth but very comfortable. It has an SOS feature that will automatically contact emergency services if an accident happens. The large display shows speed and miles to E as well as music, phone features and navigation.
