Overview

The 2020 Nissan Rogue continues for the 2020 model year with no major changes with a price tag of $24,490. It is offered in three trims namely S, SV, and SL. All these trims are powered by a 2.5L four-cylinder engine that makes 170 hp and 175 lb-ft. of torque. Although its acceleration is very boring, its fuel economy is worth appreciating.

The Rogue's cabin will certainly impress many buyers for its upscale and stylish cabin. At 70 cu-ft. of cargo space, the Rogue is one of the largest cargo haulers in its class. This SUV also benefits from top safety features and strong resale values. The Rogue compels the buyers to sway away from popular choices like Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, and the Toyota RAV4.

Buying Advice

The SV trim hits the sweet spot with the optional Premium package. It offers most of the desirable features from the top SL trim without the hefty price tag. This trim adds push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, 8-way power driver's seat, heated exterior mirrors, and front seats, a leather steering wheel, a hands-free power tailgate, 6-speaker sound system, rear parking sensors, and rear automatic braking.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

This isn't the freshest compact crossover around, but it has a surprisingly versatile interior and offers some welcome technology- Cnet

For the longest time, the Nissan Rogue has dominated the compact crossover segment, including other Japanese competitors such as the CR-V and the RAV4. It is currently the last model year of the current generation as Nissan is all set to introduce an all-new Rogue for the next model year. Yet, this one doesn't feel old enough and impress its buyers with its spacious interiors, stellar fuel economy, and value-added features.

However, its ownership costs are slightly higher than other Japanese competitors which come close to $7,200 every year. This particular cost includes maintenance, repair, fuel, finance, etc. Also, its average cost per mile is calculated to be $0.48, which is almost the same as its rivals. In terms of reliability, although it scored 82 points, it ranks below its core rivals in the J.D. Power reliability test.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

The EPA rates the Rogue among the most fuel-efficient in its class- CarAndDriver

The Nissan Rogue has a pretty decent fuel economy. It can manage 26 MPG in the city, 33 MPG on the highway, and 29 MPG combined with the FWD drivetrain. Opting for the AWD system drops down the fuel economy by 2 MPG in combined form. These figures are competitive for the segment. The Rogue comes with idle start/stop technology to improve fuel economy.

This technology can shut the engine down when you’re at a stoplight and start instantaneously as you pull away. The Rogue gets a decently sized fuel tank of 14.5 gallons. At its full capacity, the SUV can drive up to 428 miles combined, which further reduces to 413 miles for AWD models. Therefore, the Rogue is a perfect vehicle for long family trips.

The Honda CR-V has the best fuel efficiency here. The fuel estimates of the Toyota RAV4 are almost similar to the CR-V and slightly more efficient than the Rogue. On the other hand, the Mazda CX-5 is a tad bit on the lower side in terms of efficiency. Overall, the Rogue has excellent fuel economy and stands firmly against its class rivals.

Interior
8.0/10

The Rogue's interior uses quality materials that are well-assembled- Edmunds

The Nissan Rogue's cabin features good-quality materials while the build quality is great. The flat-bottom steering wheel is leather-wrapped on all but the S trim. Speaking of front-seat comfort, they provide good levels of comfort and support. Nissan calls them NASA-inspired Zero Gravity seats. They are leather-wrapped only on the SLT rim while the lower trims get cloth upholstery. Except for the S trim, the front seats are heated and power-adjustable.

The sitting position makes for a commanding driving position and a good view of the road ahead. Adding to the front-seat comfort is great head and legroom. Just like the front seats, the rear seats are also comfortable and the recline angle is also perfect. There's a lot of passenger space so three adults can sit comfortably at the back. The second row can be tilted and slid for additional legroom. The optional panoramic sunroof cust headroom for six-footers.

The 7-inch touchscreen display is standard across all trims and features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The quality of the screen is good along with the touch response which is fairly quick. Nissan Connect services also ensure the seamless connectivity of your smartphone along with turn-by-turn navigation. The top-end SL trim comes with a 9-speaker Bose sound system while the S and SV trims get 4 and 6-speaker stereo.

Exterior
5.0/10

We think Nissan’s 2020 Rogue is a handsome, relatively subdued compact SUV- Kelly Blue Book

The exterior styling of the Nissan Rogue is too old and can't compete with its redesigned rivals. Therefore, it will be redesigned for the upcoming model year. Starting from the front, the headlights nicely integrate into the V-motion grille and the whole front-end looks well designed. The top-of-the-line SL model replaces halogen headlamps with LED projectors and also adds fog lamps.

As far as the wheels go, they are 18-inch alloys on the S and SV trims and 19-inch alloys on the SL model. The Rogue has a ground clearance of 7.8 inches, which is good enough for an SUV. From the side view, the design is not very bold but it's kind of smooth and rounded. The wide wheelbase translates for a spacious interior. The Rogue carries over with the chrome accent across the rear and LED taillights.

The Toyota RAV4 sits 0.6 inches above the Rogue, which is adequate for off-roading purposes. With an overall length of 179.1 inches, the Mazda CX-5 is the shortest car in this competition. Therefore, it will be easy to maneuver it at tight spots. The Honda CR-V's short wheelbase doesn't impact its rear-seat passenger space but instead, it helps to burn out pretty fast for quick acceleration. Some of the Rogue's exterior features are:

  • Halogen headlamps
  • LED DRLs
  • LED taillights
  • Fog lights
  • Chrome door handles
  • 17 & 19-inch alloy wheels
  • Heated mirrors
  • Black grille with chrome accents
  • Rear roofline spoiler
  • Chrome window trim

Safety
8.0/10

Crash-test scores are mixed, but the Rogue has available advanced safety features that others don’t yet offer- The Car Connection

The Nissan Rogue earned respectable safety ratings thanks to its sturdy body structure. NHTSA gave four out of five stars for its safety. The SUV was also honored with the Top Safety Pick award by IIHS, which is the second-highest rating by the organization. However, it received an 'Acceptable' rating for its headlights and passenger-side crash test.

If you're looking for a compact SUV with a long list of standard advanced safety features, the Rogue has got you covered. As you move up the trim table, more driver-assist systems add to the list. These systems keep the Rogue as class leaders in terms of safety. The list of safety features available in the Rogue are mentioned below:

  • Blind Spot Warning
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Forward Collision Mitigation
  • Rearview Camera
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Pedestrian Detection
  • Rear Parking Sensors
  • Reverse Automatic Braking
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Surround-View Camera
  • ProPilot Assist

Competition

2020 Nissan Rogue vs 2020 Honda CR-V

The Honda CR-V tops the list for compact SUVs and offers better acceleration than the Rogue. It is also more fuel-efficient than the Rogue. However, the infotainment system of the CR-V feels dated as does the exterior styling. The Rogue has a long list of standard features yet the CR-V fares better. On the flip side, the CR-V offers more rear-seat space and cargo capacity. The CR-V also offers more standard safety features than the Rogue.

2020 Nissan Rogue vs 2020 Mazda CX- 5

The Mazda CX-5 is slightly more powerful than the Rogue, is more fun to drive, and won’t overwhelm you with power. It feels composed and agile, unlike the Rogue. It is a bit more efficient as well. The CX-5 is short on cargo space but makes up for it with upscale and tech-driven inside. The Rogue, on the other hand, is a practical car that makes a great daily driver. The CX-5 was also named the Top Safety Pick+ by IIHS, making it the safest pick here.

2020 Nissan Rogue vs 2020 Toyota RAV4

The Toyota RAV4 has one of the most powerful base engines in its class and hence, better acceleration. Both SUVs share the same stage in terms of fuel economy and cargo capacity. The RAV4 fares better when it comes to cabin materials but the Rogue offers slightly more passenger space. The RAV4 wins some more points with more standard driver aids. Overall, the RAV4 wins the battle with better reliability and low ownership costs.

Final Verdict

The 2020 Nissan Rogue is an excellent compact SUV. It offers large cargo space and a long list of standard safety features. Add to that an excellent fuel economy and a spacious cabin and you get a car that can woo a lot of customers. The acceleration is sluggish and it is a little noisy on the highways. Thus, if all of these suit your requirements, the Rogue will be an excellent car for you.

My car is awesome on gas, I drive a lot to run arrends and take kids to school far distances.

Pros - ["Good on gas", "Very roomy"]

Cons - ["Nothing at all", "Nothing at all"]

In overall I feel this car is the perfect car for me and my family to use on a regular basis. It's cost efficient and perfect fit for my small family. It is very safe and runs like a dream. The interior is nice and very clean.

              Nissan Rogue reviews

Pros - ["The way it handles the road", "The style is beautiful"]

Cons - ["It's not real unique", "Hard to get video off the computer."]

This was the first time purchasing a Nissan and wished I had purchased one long ago. It is a fun road car and will try to take it on all my road trips. My daughter's car is a Roge Sport. We both needed another car and we both were so surprised we both got a Rogue in the same color!
