... and go, this is not the car for you. You have to spend time disengaging stupid things before you can even start out. First off, it automatically sets the parking brake almost every time you park--even on level land, so you have to disengage that before you go. Then there is the annoying engine start/stop mechanism that you have to disengage before you start out. Then it is aRead More

It is sad to see that one of the categories people used to swear by in the world of automobiles is slowly dying. We’re talking about the midsize sedan category which does not have a lot of new things lately. The segment has slowly been left to die in favor of crossover SUVs of every kind. But there are cars that make you reconsider in the segment. The 2022 Hyundai Sonata sedan is one of these cars and it fits the right niche for many families in terms of practicality and also fun. We believe that car buyers need to take a look at it before jumping to another crossover SUV.

To start with, this car has always provided great value. It has always given a good set of features, great interiors, and engaging powertrains. Starting at $25,195, it is quite affordable for most people who are looking for new cars. Its category sees a lot of hard hitters that make it hard to look at the Sonata sometimes. Competing against names like the Honda Accord, the Toyota Camry, and the Nissan Altima, it definitely has large shoes to fill. Let us read more about Hyundai Sonata problems in the article below.

2022 Hyundai Sonata User Complaints and Problems

Hyundai’s market dominance right now has been its focus on making its cars reliable. Not just that, it guarantees this reliability to owners by extending excellent warranty terms that beat just about every other manufacturer out there. Some of its earlier cars are not as dependable as many of the newer ones are and we see this divide if you look at their current generation as opposed to what they were 10 years ago. but this interpretation does not apply to the Hyundai Sonata with the some of the issues it has given.

We should always keep in mind that the number of complaints will always be proportional to the number of units sold of each particular vehicle. The current generation of the Hyundai Sonata has been launched in 2019 and carries forward largely unchanged for the 2022 model. Luckily, for us, this means there is adequate data to base our study on.

Mechanical problems:

  1. One owner stated that the tire tread on the car had separated. This started as an abnormal sound on the Pirelli P Zero tire which came from the manufacturer.
  2. Another owner had stated that there was transmission fluid leaking from the engine. There was some mix-up of fluids in between and it is not supposed to happen. What disappointed the owner was that there was no solution found by the dealership.
  3. There have been more reports of the transmission system of the car being faulty. The owner states that the shifting was not at typical intervals and the engine sometimes revved higher than usual. Again, this problem was not fixed at the dealership.

Electrical system problems:

  1. One owner reports that the forward collision warning activates and brakes the car by itself. The car then shut itself down completely and the owner had observed that many other drivers had reported the same issue on online forums.
  2. Another owner has been concerned about the automatic wipers on the car. They operate erratically and sometimes activate themselves when there is not even a drop of rain.
  3. One contact reported that the car had multiple warning lights on the dashboard coming on and off. The fuel efficiency display then started behaving erratically and there were several other electrical problems accompanying it.
  4. Many owners have also stated issues with Apple CarPlay connectivity. The infotainment system then shuts itself off and none of the features are available during this period.

Exterior problems:

  1. One owner reported that the windshield cracks easily even when small pebbles hit and this is followed by the crack spreading across the windshield.
  2. Many owners have also reported problems associated with wind noise. This was known as a common problem in the car and requires some intervention from the brand.

Safety problems:

  1. One owner reported that the transmission took itself out of Park and moved to create an incident. Luckily no one was hurt but it is a system that requires a redesign.

Interior problems:

  1. One owner reported that the panoramic sunroof exploded while driving on the highway. There was nothing that hit the sunroof but it exploded on its own and caused a huge safety concern.

The 2022 Hyundai Sonata has only reported one complaint so far and since this was regarding the tire tread separation, it can’t be called a common problem. However, data from the 2021 model year onwards states that there are several common complaints and many of them seem to be due to design faults on the part of the manufacturer.

2022 Hyundai Sonata Recall

The number of complaints about this car has been slightly high during some model years. Even if we consider that the Sonata is a car that sells a lot of units, it has a total of 30 complaints in 2019 and 44 complaints in 2020 which is a slightly worrying number. It comes nowhere near some of its earlier years. Things like the 2007 Hyundai Sonata problems give owners nightmares still.

However, things improved as the 2021 model has only had 11 complaints and the 2022 model has only recorded one so far. A decreasing trend of complaints is something we look at with a lot of hope because it means that the manufacturer is working actively to fix the problems that have come in the car. Take a look at Hyundai Sonata recalls below.

Although owners have reported a wide range of complaints, it is an excellent sign that the manufacturer has gone about fixing most of them. However, several issues remain in the car and some of them have been extremely serious and concerning safety. We do hope that these complaints were addressed and fixed so that owners could have a dependable car.

Which model year of the Hyundai Sonata should you avoid?

The current generation of the Hyundai Sonata has been on sale since 2019 and just like every car, its initial years were the ones filled with the most complaints. This is when it has had 44 and 30 complaints respectively in the 2020 and 2019 model years. The manufacturer has taken on a lot of steps to ensure that the number has dropped and they have been successful in doing so.

In terms of the years that you should be avoiding to have a good ownership experience, we would recommend that you avoid the 2011 model year. Stuff like the 2011 Hyundai Sonata engine problems was quite notorious and the manufacturer was not able to fix many of these problems completely. And since it is not a particularly desirable model, it is best avoided.

Should you buy the 2022 Hyundai Sonata?

The Hyundai Sonata is a value-for-money sedan that is also very user-friendly. It fits the budget for most people and ticks all the boxes that you require for a family sedan. However, it has not had the best reputation when it comes to reliability until now. But what makes us glad is that the manufacturer has put in the effort required to sort out the issues that have come up on the car and now we have a winner on our hands. It is a car we would recommend that you buy in 2022.
