Overview

Hyundai is on a roll when it comes to designing cars, just take a look at their line-up. The same goes for the Hyundai Elantra which not only looks good but comes loaded to the brim when it comes to convenience features and gets a few makeovers and gets a better-looking front fascia. Moreover, a new sport version has also been added to the trim line up which is the most powerful of the lot.

Buying Advice

For the best and balanced experience, we suggest the Limited trim which has all the creature comforts like leather upholstery, touchscreen infotainment system, and power-adjustable seats. Moreover, the optional package adds a bigger infotainment screen and a much better sound system with dual-zone automatic climate control.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The Hyundai Elantra now comes with new engines and some exterior retouches. With these updates, the Elantra is more than prepared to take on the stale rivals like Honda Civic, Kia Forte, and Chevrolet Cruze. Even though it is the cheapest option in the group today, it certainly doesn’t look like one with those exteriors but what about the rest of the car? Let’s dive in then.

Features
9.0/10

The 2014 Hyundai Elantra comes in 3 trim levels, SE, Limited, and Sport. The SE trim comes with a very basic feature set like Air conditioning, manually adjustable seats, and an MP3 player system. The optional Preferred package will add better wheels and a touchscreen infotainment system on the SE. The Limited trim gets a genuine leather upholstery with power-adjustable seats and 17-inch wheels.

The steering wheel on the Limited trim gets leather treatment as well as the shifter knob. The optional technology package on the Limited trim adds automatic dual-zone climate control, a 7-inch touchscreen, and a 360-watt audio system. The top Sport trim comes with all the features of the previous trims plus gets a bigger 2.0L engine, sports-tuned suspension, and steering.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

The Elantra with the base engine offers impressive fuel economy and does better than most of its rivals. The automatic transmission will have a minor boost in the mileage, at 1 MPG extra over the manual one. The 2.0L engine returns 24 MPG in the city & 34 MPG on the highway with manual transmission. As for the range, the small 12.8-gallon tank is not the most ideal. The Elantra can do a combined of 473.6 miles in a full tank which is lower than most of the rivals.

The Honda Civic is as usual performs the best in terms of fuel economy, even though the fuel tank capacity is a bit lacking. Both Chevrolet and Kia can’t manage to stay above the 30 MPG combined economy figure. Though the Chevrolet Cruze is compensating it with a bigger fuel tank.

Interior
8.0/10

If Hyundai keeps designing their product the way they are doing at the moment, they might excel as a stellar brand in its market. The kind of design we saw on the exterior of this car reflects on the inside too. The dashboard has all kinds of swooping lines and curves but the way both sides of the dash blend inwards looks nice and suits the car's character. The material quality inside the cabin is great but at the end of the day, it is just hard plastic with leather-like textures on it.

The limited and sport trim do get leather upholstery on door panels but the dashboard treatment doesn’t change. The overall cabin space is great in this car, no complaints about that. The front seats are fairly comfortable considering the car's price. The second row can fit 3 passengers of average build easily with enough legroom and headroom to spare. Overall, the 2014 Hyundai Elantra isn’t doing anything great but it has all the comfort that it can offer in its segment.

The cargo capacity of the Elantra is fine and the trapezoidal trunk opening is big enough to put larger items. The seats can be folded down in the usual 60/40 manner. Though the interior on the Elantra is a bit eccentric, the Honda Civic offers a high-end cabin experience thanks to those multilayered instrument panel displays. Even the seats on the Civic offer better contours compared to the Elantra. Every automaker is trying to be different in one way or the other and Hyundai is a step ahead in this game. Key interior features:

  • Power 6-way adjustable driver seat with lumbar support
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel & shift knob
  • Heated front & rear leather seats
  • One-touch driver auto-up window
  • Tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel
  • Dual-zone automatic temperature control (optional)

How intuitive is the 2014 Hyundai Elantra’s infotainment unit?

The 2014 Elantra at the base trim just comes with a 6-speaker sound system with Bluetooth and AUX capabilities. The optional package gets you a 4.3-inch touchscreen with satellite radio and SiriusXM. The smaller screen lets some space for the good old volume and tuning knobs, which still are very much preferred over a touch interface. For all the geeks out there Hyundai Limited offers a 7-inch touchscreen via an optional package.

  • AM/FM/SiriusXM/CD/MP3 audio system with 6 speakers
  • 4.3” color touchscreen audio with a rearview camera
  • 7” touchscreen navigation system (optional)
  • Rear View camera (optional)
  • 360-Watt premium audio with an external amp (optional)
  • iPod and USB connectivity
  • Blue Link telematics system
  • Auxiliary input jacks

Exterior
9.0/10

Here is the best part of the 2014 Hyundai Elantra, its design. Engineers at Hyundai seem to have spent a little too long on the design board and inside the wind tunnel. The body lines and curves on this car will make premium car designers turn their heads. Nothing on the body of this car has an asymmetrical shape. From the headlights assembly to the fog lights, nothing seems to possess a straight line. At the rear end, things are more aggressive. The taillights especially look pretty aggressive with their curvy 'evil eyes' look. It's not just the curves but the overall car looks like it’s been sculpted out from a single block of metal. It looks whole and complete.

On one hand, Hyundai is on the loose with respect to their car's design, and here the popular cars like the Civic that are relying on age-old designs. We like the Chevrolet approach here, the way they have kept the Cruze traditional, just a basic sedan silhouette. Let’s see some of the stand-out features of the Elantra, the whole vehicle is a standout honestly, yet some of them are listed below:

  • Projector headlights with LED accents
  • LED taillights
  • Chrome beltline molding
  • Chrome door handles
  • 17” alloy wheels

Safety
9.0/10

In crash tests conducted by the NHTSA, the Hyundai Elantra has scored 5-stars in overall safety with 4-stars in frontal crash tests. In the side crash tests, the car has scored full 5-stars overall. The rollover rating is somehow at 4-stars only. Being a low-slung sedan, this should have been better. The IIHS has given the Elantra a 'Top Safety Pick' rating even though it has scored 'Acceptable' in the small front overlap tests. For the rest of the categories, it is all green. For active safety features, we don’t have much in hand, regardless some of them are:

  • Vehicle Stability Management System
  • Electronic Stability & Traction Control Systems
  • Hillstart Assist Control
  • Anti-lock Braking System with Brake Assist

Final Verdict

The Hyundai Elantra is a car that stands out from the boring crowd. The exterior design of the car could win awards if it was a sculpture. Looking at the performance aspect of the car, both the engines on the Elantra will suffice the customer base it is aimed at. The interior of the car is comfortable and cabin space is great, even on the second row.

The infotainment systems have a variety of options to choose from and it works fine. What the car lacks is safety features, the rivals are offering features like forward-collision warnings and lane departure warnings in their higher trims but here we only have one or two. The Elantra is otherwise a great family car, and you can definitely consider this new energetic sedan as your buying option.

Cons - ["Left front turn signal won't work with just rpl bulb", "Cost to repair", "Too many recalls"]

Overall, has been great car. Real good on gas and doesn't cost a lot to fill up. Can go over 400 miles on full tank. Cool air and warm heat. Disappointed in all the recalls they've notified me about..
