Overview

Though the American automobile industry is filled with different kinds of cars, midsize sedans have been one of the body styles that has maintained overall consistency, be it sales or customer satisfaction. Produced by a vast number of mass manufacturers globally, Hyundai’s Elantra is a compact sedan that has been quite popular since the 1990s for being easy on the pocket, highly reliable, and perfectly suited for daily commute.

Buying Advice

According to the value, the SE trim seems to be the best as standard features like 4-wheel disc brakes, heated mirrors, and remote keyless entry are some features that no other car in its competition provides. Additionally, Hyundai also provides two packages that bring in a load of features. The engine on this trim is not the fastest out there, but if one likes to drive the Elantra for fun, then the Sport trim would not disappoint with its improved powertrain.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Entering its sixth generation, the 2015 Hyundai Elantra carries over its reputation ahead along with cool looks, zesty drive, and some impressive fuel efficiency. The interiors are just as simple as the car and the cabin lacks features but still provides a comfortable drive. This Korean compact sedan competes with cars like the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, and Chevrolet Cruze.

Features
9.0/10

Being one of the most affordable sedans, the Hyundai Elantra comes with three trims to meet the requirements of the general public. Starting with the base SE trim, plenty of advanced features are planted as standard, while the price starts as low as $17,000. The mid-level Sport trim has visual, functional, and powertrain enhancements and is just $100 less than the top-spec Limited trim. Priced at $21,700, the high-end trim comes with some stand-out looks and features but shares the same engine as the base trim.

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

Hyundai equips its base and top-spec trim with a naturally-aspirated 1.8L inline 4-cylinder powerhouse that draws a satisfactory 145 HP of power and 130 lb-ft of torque from its rather quiet engine. The Sport trim gets an upgraded 2.0L variant of the same engine that pumps out 173 HP of power and 154 lb-ft of torque. While all the trims are front-wheel-drive and have a smooth 6-speed gearbox, the sedan also offers an option of a 6-speed automatic.

While the more powered 2.0L takes the sedan from 0 to 60 MPH in seven and a half seconds, the base engine takes a little more to reach the same speed from a standstill. Moreover, the base trim completes a quarter-mile in 17 seconds, whereas the Sport trim boasts to do it in 15.8-seconds. The sedan manages to reach a top speed of 127 mph, making it the fastest sedan in the competition.

The Hyundai Elantra produces the best power with some reasonable powertrain components, however, it is the second-fastest when put on the drag strip. Honda’s Civic is slightly faster though its power and torque figures are just a little off than the Elantra’s. A similar story boils between the Toyota and Chevrolet, where the Corolla is faster than the Cruze, although Cruze has got slightly more power.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The standard engine might not provide good power, but it is one of the best in terms of MPG figures. The 2015 Hyundai Elantra has two different fuel tanks based on the trims; the SE and Limited are equipped with a fuel tank capacity of 12.8 gallons, whereas the Sport trim comes with a larger engine and gets a better capacity of 13.2 gallons.

In its base configuration with the manual transmission, the sedan estimates 27 MPG in the city and 37 MPG on the highway, whereas the automatic transmission is the most efficient choice with 28 and 38 MPG in cities and highways, respectively. Speaking about the 2.0L powerhouse with a manual gearbox, it has some decent figures of 24 MPG in the city and 34 on the highway, whereas there is hardly any difference with the automatic transmission.

Toyota’s Corolla has the best MPG figures as well as a big enough tank to dominate the other cars in the competition. The Elantra has very similar MPG numbers to that of the Toyota but a smaller fuel tank limits it, whereas Honda’s Civic, being just a moment faster than the Hyundai, has a drop in the highway MPG but still provides a better range. Meanwhile, the Chevrolet might not have competing figures, but it has a substantially larger fuel tank resulting in the best range.

Interior
8.0/10

To start with, the dashboard finally has a standard layout with the AC vents placed on the upper half, just beside the infotainment buttons. The build quality is good, while the entire cabin is made of hard and soft-touch plastics that make the car reliable. Right from the base trim, Hyundai offers a two-tone interior, while the touch of chrome accent finishes it neatly. Moving on to seats, the compact sedan has a seating capacity of five. The front seats are bucket-shaped and have good bolstering. In the SE trim, these are manual adjusting, while the upper trims offer a 6-way power driver’s seat with lumbar support.

Heated front seats and leather upholstery offered in three different colors are standard in the Sport and Limited trims, whereas the seating surface on the base trim is wrapped in good-quality beige or gray cloth depending on the choice. The rear seating is also pretty comfortable with a 60/40 split-folding bench seat that is heavily cushioned. Some creature comforts like a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear shift knob, power sunroof, and aluminum sport pedals are standard on the Sport and Limited trims, whereas the Style package adds it up on the SE trim. The Limited trim gets options like push-button start and dual automatic climate control with the Ultimate package.

Talking about cargo space, the trunk is large and can accommodate plenty of luggage for a long road trip. Besides, there are a total of four cup-holders, a decently-sized storage bin in the center armrest as well as a huge glovebox and door pockets. Also, the center console has some cuts and crevices to fit in bills or some similar stuff. That said, some standout interior features include:

  • Sunroof
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • 6-way power driver seat with power lumbar support
  • Heated front and rear seats
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Leather upholstery

How intuitive is the 2015 Hyundai Elantra’s infotainment unit?

Being an entry-level sedan, Hyundai equips the base trim of the 2015 Elantra with a monochrome inverse TFT LCD screen that has a sharp and bright display. Mostly showing information related to the audio, this trim gets a 6-speaker system as standard along with the basic connectivity provided. Regardless of the trim, the 2015 Hyundai Elantra has a tiny digital screen that presents a variety of secondary information such as drive modes, warnings and alerts, and MPG numbers. Surrounding this screen are two good-looking illuminated analog dials that show the speed and RPM counts.

An optional upgrade on the infotainment unit includes a 4.3-inch LCD touchscreen display which has a good response and comes with the rearview camera display on the Elantra SE. This system is standard on the higher trims which can be upgraded to a 7.0-inch multicolor touchscreen with some unbeatable features and a great display. Some of the standout infotainment features include:

  • 7.0-inch multicolor touchscreen
  • AM/ FM/ SiriusXM Radio
  • In-dash CD player
  • MP3, USB, and iPod integration
  • Navigation with a voice command (Sport and Limited)
  • Pandora Internet Radio (optional)
  • NavTraffic and XM Data services (optional)

Exterior
9.0/10

Unlike the rest in the segment, this Korean compact sedan has the best looks of all. After all, the Elantra has borrowed its styling from its larger counterpart, the Sonata, which is a masterpiece in itself. Even with the compactness, the design looks pretty cool and smooth on the Elantra. The 2015 Hyundai Elantra has a sharp and sleek design overall with some strong lines defining it. Starting from the front, the headlights attract the most because of their sharp and aggressive design along with pretty dynamic housing for the fog lights, which is blacked out otherwise. The compressed front grille with a chrome bar decorates it well, whereas the bumper has a simple design and brings a contrasting look with the lowest part being colored in black.

In addition to this, the hood has serious lines that divide it from the headlight housing and enhance that aggressiveness. The 2015 Elantra also looks great from the side. There are a few lines drawn on its body that promote its rugged design language in this view too. The coupe-like roof and wheel wells are highlighted along with the lower and upper character lines with some truly impressive 5-spoke wheel rim designs that look pretty cool on this compact sedan, regardless of the trim. Moving over to the rear, the large taillights look brilliant with an energetic rear bumper design. Moreover, the stainless steel exhaust finishes off things in style.

All the sedans compete pretty closely, with the Civic and Elantra having a neck-and-neck competition. While one is a little shorter, the other has that much less width. However, the Elantra looks to be the most compact as the Toyota Corolla is the longest and way taller than the Hyundai. The Hyundai does have a premium touch to it, and to solidify the same, some of the standout exterior features are:

  • 17-inch wheels
  • Fog Lights
  • LED taillights
  • Sunroof
  • Sport-tuned suspension

Safety
8.0/10

The Korean automaker has made the 2015 Elantra out of high-strength steel that makes it stiff and strong. Moreover, the unibody construction keeps the cabin intact and all of its occupants safe. The Elantra comes with some decent safety features like six airbags, hill-start assist, brake assist, and electronic stability control. In addition to this, the mid-level and top trims get the Hyundai Blue Link that provides some of the finest connected services in the segment.

The 2015 Hyundai Elantra has an overall 5-star safety rating from the NHTSA with frontal and rollover ratings having a 4-star rating. Moreover, the IIHS honors the sedan with its “Top safety pick” award, where the Elantra scores “Good” ratings in the crashworthiness section, except for the “Average” small overlap front. Some standout safety features include:

  • Rearview camera
  • Hill-start assist
  • stability and traction control
  • BlueLink emergency telematics
  • Tire pressure monitoring system

Final Verdict

Belonging to one of the most-selling segments in the industry, this Korean compact sedan has an edge as it offers some brilliant features that none of its rivals do. The interior is styled a little better than the class with a great layout, whereas the exterior design is just on-point and feels really sporty for a car like this. All in all, the 2015 Hyundai Elantra is a great choice as a family sedan because of its high reliability and fuel efficiency topped with some bountiful features.

2015 Hyundai Elantra 4 door sedan

Pros - ["Great on gas", "Sporty looking body", "Dependable"]

Cons - ["Left front turn signal won't work with just rpl bulb", "Cost to repair", "Too many recalls"]

Overall, has been great car. Real good on gas and doesn't cost a lot to fill up. Can go over 400 miles on full tank. Cool air and warm heat. Disappointed in all the recalls they've notified me about..

Pros - ["I love the acceleration on it , it's fast enough to have some fun with !", "I love it's features, filling up with 30$ worth of gas"]

Cons - ["I don't like that when you're low on gas , it doesn't show gas level under 30 range", "i dislike that the windows are clear, it gets really hot in the car because it doesn't have tinta"]
