Overview

The Ford Fusion has been one of the most cherished models and it comes with some serious upgrades in many categories. It gets sharper looks and is definitely a stand-out powertrain package in the competition which is a melange of both exhilaration and efficiency. Apart from these, the interiors are decently spaced with impressive cabin insulation.

Buying Advice

Though the best among all is the Titanium trim but its price tag is something that is a matter of concern. While the SE trim can be a cost-effective option available in this strata as it has all those basic amenities along with some enriching assets like the 6-speaker audio system and insulated cabin. Therefore, it is reasonable to prefer the SE trim over others.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2014 Ford Fusion is a beautiful mid-size sedan priced competitively starting at $21,970 and offers some incredible assets that are fit for the growing American market. It competes with a few of the best-sellers including the Volkswagen Passat, Toyota Camry, and Chevrolet Malibu

Features
9.9/10

Made available in three trims- S, SE, Titanium, the 2014 Fusion price starts from $21,970 and goes up to $32,600 for the Titanium with an optional all-wheel-drive system. As standard, the Fusion S trim is averagely organized with features such as manual air conditioning and seat adjustment along with a 4-speaker audio set. The 2.5-liter inline-4 engine seems to continue in both lower tiers whereas the same can be upgraded to a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 variant in the highest trim. The SE does start to vary from the base with the inheritances like the 6-speaker audio system, 17-inch alloy wheels, and SiriusXM. But it is the Titanium trim that gets better than the younger siblings by a mile.

As mentioned earlier, the Titanium is the prime trim of the Ford Fusion. Whatever you need is there in its realm right from the leatherette inserts to Dual-zone climate control to Leather-Trimmed Heated Sport Bucket Seats with power adjustability. The likes of the 18-inch alloy wheels are also satiated in this trim. If you would consider the cabin engagement then the Sony premium 12-speaker audio system is also there to echo your surroundings with a real showcase. On the whole, the Titanium might be expensive but the price is very much justified.

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

Powering the 2014 Fusion are three engine variants among which the standard one is a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline 4 engine which belts out about 175 hp and 175 pound-feet of torque. This engine is mated to a 6-speed shiftable automatic transmission and gets all its power down through the front wheels. The new 1.5-liter turbocharged inline 4 pumps out a slightly more 178 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of maximum torque. It is an optional engine available with the SE trim. In the end, the Titanium offers a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline 4 engine that pumps as much as 240 hp and 270 pound-feet of peak torque. As a result of the primitive unit, the Fusion does accelerate to 60 mph from a halt in 8.8 seconds and completes a quarter-mile in 16.5 seconds with a top speed of 135 mph.

The Fusion with its base engine configurations does put out almost similar power figures but is way behind the competition when it comes to acceleration timings. Volkswagen Passat impresses in accelerating faster than the others and it is probably because of its turbocharged engine as standard. It completes the 60mph run in 7.6 seconds and crosses the quarter-mile mark in under 16 seconds. The Chevy, on the other hand, produces segment-leading raw power and torque figures of 197hp and 191lb.-ft, but fails to deliver the real-world performance it is meant to and falls under the Toyota Camry. However, Toyota, Chevy, and Ford models have very similar quarter-mile timings.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

When it comes to fuel economy, the Fusion with the standard engine is not the worthy one. According to the EPA, the figures are as low as 22 mpg for the city, 34 mpg on the highways, and 26 mpg combined. Ford has equipped the car with a decent-sized 16.5-gallon fuel tank with which it delivers a range of up to 429 miles per refueling. However, if you prefer a more economical lifestyle then the 1.5-liter turbocharged engine can be your pick as the numbers increase by 3 mpg.

As per data, the Malibu offers the best-in-class fuel economy of 29 MPG but has the smallest gas tank capacity which affects the overall range yet outperforms the Fusion which has the lowest EPA ratings in the competition. The former is followed by the Camry and Passat, which holds the largest gas tank of 18.5-gallons in the competition and also delivers the best-in-class tank range in the reverse order.

Interior
9.0/10

Ford has done a good job in providing a cabin that looks good and feels good only if you are opting for the Titanium trim of Fusion as the lower ones are quite shabby in their accents. In the wake of an hour when premium and exotic ambiance is becoming a new need, the plastic-deluged inserts do not appear to be promising and that is exactly where the lower trims have been trapped. The symmetrical dashboard is consistent across all but leather trimming on the seats, gear shifter, and door inserts have been kept exclusive to the Titanium only. The Titanium also gets Dual Zone Front Automatic Air Conditioning which is lacking in the other two along with power-adjustability for seats. Hence, it is safe to comment that the interior could have been better on a bigger picture.

All of them are so content in their space management and flexibility that this rivalry does not have any haters. Be it headroom, legroom, or shoulder width, each of them is apt for accommodating 5 passengers effortlessly. These cabins are well insulated as well which is an added bonus. High cushioning and long hauling practicality are also common among them which is why we hedge our bets in preferring one model or interior cabin over another. In terms of cargo space, the Ford Fusion, Chevrolet Malibu, and Toyota Camry have similar capacities of 16 cu.-ft.

Some of the features are:

  • Cruise control
  • Leather steering wheel
  • Leather trims on the doors and shift knob
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Leather seats

How intuitive is the 2014 Ford Fusion’s infotainment unit?

The standard infotainment system available in the Fusion includes a pair of 4.2-inch displays at the front of the driver which is highly configurable and has navigation services. The middle has an 8-inch touchscreen display which is an optional extra and is a must-have to ease out accessibility. The system is connected through SYNC connectivity. However, there are a few caveats including the display which lags quite a bit every time you go through the interface. A few of the key infotainment features of the 2014 Fusion are as follows:

  • Dual 4.2 inches driver information display
  • 8-inch touchscreen center-mounted display (Optional)
  • Satellite radio
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • SYNC system
  • 12-speaker Sony premium audio experience
  • Navigation services

Exterior
9.0/10

Since the new generation kicked off the US market, Fusion got all the attention from the outside for its sharp and sporty looks. The 2014 model year of the same appears very similar to the outgoing model with those aggression-personified headlamps on the side of the front fascia with an intake grille right in the center. The sedan sits on a set of 16-inch alloy wheels as standard which can be upgraded to 18 inches with some extra investment. The creases and lining on the hood are also additives in its persona. The proportionate and gradual flow increment from the front to the top to the rear trunk is absolutely top-notch. Therefore, we rate it very high on our chart.

Holding a curb weight of 3,431 pounds, it is certainly the heaviest among the competitors but has similar dimensions to them to a large extent. Even the weight gap is manageable because of which we can perform at par with them when maneuvered at high speed around the corners. The liabilities are further reduced with a pair of anti-roll bars in the front and rear thereby managing the leaning and lateral forces all at once. Some of the features are:

  • Projector headlights with fog lights
  • 18-inch painted alloy wheels
  • Power and heated mirrors
  • Chrome intake grilles
  • Dual integrated exhaust tips

Safety
9.0/10

When it comes to safety, Fusion is one of the best cars in the competition with the robust build quality and a long list of features that make road travel safer. It is rated well by the federal agencies by performing several levels of crash tests. The NHTSA marks the Fusion with a maxed-out 5-star rating and the same goes for the IIHS which has recognized the same with the “Top Safety Pick+” award. Apart from the usual safety features like the 4-wheel ABD, traction control, there are a few major active safety features and they are mentioned are as follows:

  • Electronic brakeforce distribution
  • AdvanceTrac
  • Emergency braking assist
  • Passenger airbag occupant sensing deactivation

Final Verdict

As per the price tag, the Fusion is a very practical sedan with renowned reliability and safety. Opting for the higher trims is recommended as it will unlock a lot of features and accessibility that are missing in the base trims. That being said, Ford has to work behind the infotainment system to make it intuitive. If you can give up the sharper exterior designs, the 2014 Passat can also be a great threat to the aforementioned.

              Ubering with Ford Fusion Hybrid

Pros - ["Gas Milage is 46.3 which is really good for Gig Driver", "Unlike other cars power of Ford is stronger", "Safety and feel luxury is another reasons love to drive this car"]

Cons - ["Seats are not too comfortable", "Car is Big and Wide but feel small inside", "Suspension systems seems week than 2010 models"]

For a long time drive with ford fusion 2015 not comfortable of sitting position. According to the big body of car trouble time of watching around. However power and Gas Milage is totally great for Gig worker.

              Great commuter car

Pros - ["It's comfort", "Gas mileage"]

Cons - ["The engine- they develop a stutter after awhile", "The expense to fix it- it's computer and so it's expensive to fix anything on it"]

It's a great little car has been there best car I've had, is also the newest and nicest thing I've ever owned so I baby it. I love the leather interior, the heated seats in winter, the sound system that's stock, it's good on gas mileage, comfortable for long trips, easy to clean out and up when she needs washed. I'm dreading the day anything goes wrong with it though because it's computer ran and...

              It's great for a car.

Pros - ["Look of the exterior", "Features internally at the time"]

Cons - ["Gas mileage", "Seat belt beeping"]

This vehicle gets about 25 miles to the gallon was expecting a little better when I purchased it. The interior dirties really easy and the side panels started to come off a year after owning on the interior. It definitely needs a transmission recall but overall it's been a decent car.
