Overview

The 2013 Fusion Ford breaks the conventional generic styling present in the mid-size sedan segment. The car has a distinctive character and advanced features without going overboard. Fusion is a fun-to-drive family sedan with plenty of space. The car offers everything a buyer needs from remarkable fuel efficiency to improved road manners.

Buying Advice

We recommend going for the Titanium trim as it is much more feature-rich and provides better value for money. The trim encompasses multiple features that make life convenient and comfortable with some amenities like dual-Zone climate control, leather-trimmed seats, leather-trimmed steering, and more add subtle but respectable improvements to driving quality and comfort.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

In a highly populated mid-size sedan segment, the 2013 Fusion competes for the top spot with its newfound combination of looks, features, and fuel efficiency. The car faces heavy competition from the likes of many famous and well-established names like Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, and Kia Optima.

Features
9.9/10

The 2013 Ford Fusion is offered in three trim levels - S, SE, and Titanium - and comes with either a 2.5L four-cylinder engine or a turbocharged 2.0L EcoBoost engine combined with a six-speed automatic gearbox depending on the trim. You can also choose between standard FWD drivetrain or AWD in the Titanium. The base S trim features the 2.5L four-cylinder engine, 16-inch wheels, automatic headlights, Cruise control, and a four-speaker sound system.

The mid-level SE trim has features like exterior keypad entry, heated mirrors, an eight-way power driver seat, and many other features which improve convenience and comfort. The Titanium trim is the most expensive offering and comes with a 2.0L Turbo engine, 18-inch wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, rear parking sensors, sport front seats, a premium 12-speaker Sony sound system, leather upholstery, heated front seats, 10-way power driver seat, 4-way power passenger seat, dual-zone automatic climate control and MyFord Touch electronics interface with 8-inch central LCD touchscreen.

We Recommend

We recommend going for the Titanium trim as it is much more feature-rich and provides better value for money. Engine and Performance
8.0/10

The 2013 Ford Fusion feels sportier and enthusiastic in terms of performance too apart from styling. The Fusion S and the Fusion SE trim come with a 2.5L inline-4 engine as standard that produces 175 hp of power and 175 lb-ft of torque. This engine is offered only with a six-speed automatic transmission and an FWD drivetrain configuration.

The SE trim can be optioned with either a turbocharged 1.6L inline-4 that produces 178 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, or a turbocharged 2.0L inline-4 generating 240 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. Both these engines are paired to a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, with the smaller engine being able to pair up with a 6-speed manual as well. The Titanium trim comes in standard FWD configuration with optional AWD.

The Nissan Altima is the only car in question to have a CVT transmission; the rest of them come with 6-speed automatics. With the 2.5L engine, the 2013 Fusion provides a respectable performance that is comparable to its peers and covers the 60 MPH mark in just 8.8 seconds, with the quarter-mile done in 16.5 seconds. The Kia Optima is the quickest of the lot covering 0-60mph in just 7.8 seconds.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

After replacing the V6 engines of its previous model years, the 2013 Fusion receives an impressive rise in its fuel economy figures. The base engine on the Fusion S and SE trims returns a decent mileage of 22 MPG in the city and 34 MPG on the highways resulting in a combined efficiency of 26 MPG. Opting for the 1.6T with the 6-speed automatic on the SE trim gets you 23/36/28 MPG in the city/highway/combined driving cycles respectively. On the other hand, the same engine with the manual transmission improves fuel economy by 1-2 MPG.

The 2.0L Turbocharged EcoBoost engine on the Titanium trim returns 22MPG in the city, 33 MPG on the highway and 26 MPG combined. The Eco Boost engine provides better performance than the base engine without sacrificing efficiency. However, the AWD variant will drop these figures by 1 MPG.

Even with the recent improvements in fuel efficiency, the Ford has not really caught up with its rivals. While the highway figures are comparable to that of its rivals the city MPG figures fall lower than the competition. Also, the car has a smaller fuel tank compared to its rivals resulting in a lower driving range.

Interior
9.0/10

The 2013 Ford Fusion offers sufficient room for five people inside its cabin with good support, comfort, and quality. The rather stark interior with decent materials for the class is a clear deception of the company’s efforts to raise the passenger environment. However, the soft-to-touch materials used in the cabin feel really good when rested upon. The dash is uncluttered and well organized. With a power-adjustable driver seat and tilt and telescoping steering wheel, you could find a suitable driving position easily.

The rear seats are also supportive and have enough head and legroom. While the first two trims may feel bland in terms of interior, opting for the Titanium trim gets you leather upholstery, heated power front seats, 10-way power driver and 4-way power passenger seat with memory settings, dual-zone automatic climate control and a leather steering wheel. You can also opt for a sunroof in SE and Titanium trim. 2013 Fusion also offers a decent cargo capacity at 16 cu ft.

The sloping roofline on the Fusion creates an illusion of lower headroom in the rear. The actual headroom is good and comparable to the rest of the competition. Also, the longer wheelbase results in having more legroom on both rows of seats. It also has the largest boot with a capacity measuring 16 cubic ft. The interior refresh has done a lot to improve the overall look and feel, with some standout interior features being:

  • Dual-zone electronic automatic climate control
  • Air filtration system
  • Leather-trimmed power-adjustable seats
  • Leather Wrapped steering wheel and shift knob
  • Heated front seats and driver seat with memory
  • Tilt and telescoping steering wheel

How intuitive is the 2013 Ford Fusion’s infotainment system?

The infotainment system on the 2013 Ford Fusion features two screens: a 4.2-inch LCD display in the instrument cluster and an 8-inch LCD screen on the center stack. The smaller screen on the instrument cluster keeps the driver updated about the details of the car at all times. The system can be controlled through voice commands and steering mounted controls.

The infotainment system comes with My Ford Touch and Ford SYNC features. The infotainment system feels complex and this complexity is one of the major drawbacks of the car. The interface is confusing and the controls are hard to get used to. That aside, there’s a 4-speaker audio system that can be upgraded to a 12-speaker Sony Audio system. Some standout infotainment features include:

  • My Ford Touch with a configurable display
  • FORD SYNC in-vehicle connectivity system
  • Sony Audio system with 12 speakers
  • Voice-activated controls and steering mounted controls
  • SiriusXM satellite radio

Exterior
9.0/10

The 2013 Ford Fusion remains one of the better-looking family sedans in its price segment. The car features multiple design cues that are found in some premium more expensive models. The front fascia houses the new grille and slim headlamps. The trapezoidal grille reminds the viewer of an Aston Martin at first sight.

The roofline tapers into the rear LED tail lamps. The vehicle also features 17-inch alloy wheels and body-colored door handles with a chrome insert. Opting for the Titanium trim gets you sports-tuned suspension and 18-inch alloy wheels.

The Fusion stands as the biggest car in the competition and also features the longest wheelbase among the bunch. It looks beautiful with the new redesign while the proportions justify the price and the segment the car falls in. That said, some standout exterior features include:

  • 18-inch polished face wheels with All-Season tires
  • Dual integrated exhaust tips
  • Rear decklid Spoiler
  • Fog Lamps
  • SecuriCode invisible keypad
  • Heated side-view mirrors with turn signal indicators

Safety
9.0/10

The 2013 Ford Fusion is a safe vehicle with high safety and reliability scores. The car received excellent scores from both the NHTSA and IIHS in their crash tests. The 2013 Fusion earned an overall five-star rating from the NHTSA while IIHS honored it with its “Top Safety Pick Plus” award. The vehicle comes with a promising list of standard safety features including eight airbags, mandatory stability control, and more. Some standout safety features include:

  • AdvanceTrac electronic stability control
  • Brake actuated traction control
  • Personal safety system for driver and passenger
  • Post-crash alert system
  • Active Park assist
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Blind Spot information system
  • Cross-traffic alert
  • Lane-keeping system
  • Adaptive cruise control

Final Verdict

The 2013 Ford Fusion comes with a new grille, longer and wider body, and sportier and upscale looks than its predecessors. The car provides a long-awaited refreshment in the lineup as a better-looking family sedan with good handling and performance with hints of luxury. It is a really good family car with high safety and reliability scores along with a trusted brand value and support system.

              It's great for a car.

Pros - ["Look of the exterior", "Features internally at the time"]

Cons - ["Gas mileage", "Seat belt beeping"]

This vehicle gets about 25 miles to the gallon was expecting a little better when I purchased it. The interior dirties really easy and the side panels started to come off a year after owning on the interior. It definitely needs a transmission recall but overall it's been a decent car.

Pros - ["Good on gas", "Cruise control", "Spokes rims"]

Cons - ["High maintenance", "Breaks down often", "High part costs"]

Full tank will last someone 3 days when using Cruise control. Will take ypu long distances no problem. Trunk can hold a good amount of items. Enou to hold up to five people in the entire car. Had carswat bars to lock in all models
