I hope this car was a freak accident because it has literally fallen apart off the show room floor! At 52k the engine failed, the headliner had to be replaced, the eyeglass storage unit has been recalled, the sunroof controls broke, the rear seal when they replaced the engine was bad, and now the front left axle has failed with a manufacturer's fault. The dealership has been nothing short of mean spirited about it all and has tried to blame me for everything. This vehicleRead More

... got extended warranty. Had to replace shock first year , then the vehicle was good up until one week ago January 2022. I heard a ticking in motor took it to my mechanic, who told me to call hyundai to see if still under warranty and if they would do anything for me and answer was no not under warranty so would be at my cost . My engine has only 10600 km on it paid 30000 dollars . The engine is no good and I will not pay hyundai to put new oneRead More

... and needed to be replaced. They said there was large amounts. If metal and damage to cylinder walls from wire wrist pins. I googled to see if others were having this issue at all, sure enough A LOT of people once getting over 70,000 miles started having this same issue and having engine failure. People say it should be recalled but hasn’t been. I fortunately bought a lifetime warranty so I didn’t have to pay muchRead More

With a redesigned exterior, better infotainment features, and a new trim with an improved engine, the 2014 Hyundai Elantra aims at gaining ascendancy in the market. It is easily one of the most consistent options available in its segment that carves a niche for itself with its high levels of comfort, ample passenger and cargo space, and a potent list of convenience features. Despite its affordable price point, the Korean vehicle reeks of refinement and is a delight to drive. Though its competitors do eat into the market share, Elantra’s high degree of reliability despite its 245 complaints, makes it an absolute peach. A 2014 Hyundai Elantra for sale is available at $17,200 and in its segment, it competes with the likes of the Chevrolet Cruze, the Honda Civic, and the Kia Forte.

2014 Hyundai Elantra User Complaints and Problems

Safety Complaints

  • Problems with the airbag system: Buyers of the 2014 Elantra, both in the sedan and hatchback variants, have reported two distinct issues with the airbag system. The first problem is concerned with the inadvertent illumination of the airbag light. In several cases, buyers have reported the warning light stays on without any reason and while the underlying cause is not known, such a malfunction can interfere with the functionality of the airbag. On the other hand, a large number of users have also reported the non-deployment of the airbags in case of a crash, which has resulted in injuries to the occupants.

Mechanical Complaints

  • Stalling of the engine: The 2014 Hyundai Elantra engine problems deal with the sudden loss of power. In several cases, buyers have reported the vehicle stalling inadvertently, when the vehicle is in motion. The sedan fails to move, increasing the risk of a crash. On the other hand, some other buyers have also reported the engine failing to crank constantly.
  • Failure of transmission: The Hyundai Elantra transmission problems deal with its occasional slipping. In many cases, users have recorded the RPMS increasing suddenly as the vehicle shifts into a lower gear randomly. In one case, a complainant stated that the transmission system had failed prematurely.
  • Sticking steering wheel: In the 2014 Hyundai Elantra issues list, buyers of the compact sedan have reported the steering wheel sticking in the center. As a result, the steering wheel becomes difficult to maneuver and requires extra effort to be corrected. It can increase the risk of a crash and requires an instant solution.

Electric System Complaints

  • Improper functioning of the brake lights: In several cases, buyers of the 2013 Elantra have reported the brake light remaining illuminated even after the pedal has been released. This happens due to a damaged brake pedal stopper pad and results in the light bulbs blowing out consistently. To deal with the issue, Hyundai has introduced a recall, referenced by NHTSA ID 17V769000.

Deterioration of brake pedal stopper pad

Due to a deterioration of the brake pedal stopper pad, the brake light switch plunger may remain extended even when the pedal is released. As a result, the brake light may remain illuminated continuously and the shift lever may also be shifted without depressing the pedal.

Dealers will replace the brake pedal stopper pad, free of cost.

Should you buy the 2014 Hyundai Elantra?

Regardless of its flaws, the 2014 Hyundai Elantra continues to be an enticing option in the compact sedan segment. While the problem statistics are considerable, for a vehicle that sells over 220,000 units, the 2014 Elantra recalls and complaints list seems justifiable and is not overly worrisome. So, from a reliability standpoint, the Korean vehicle is a comprehensive option. Even in terms of everyday drivability, Elantra’s unmatched frugality and precise handling capabilities pave the way for its success. Its capacious build makes it a revered choice for family-oriented buyers and its comprehensive warranty package ensures that buyers do not have to go through immense trouble to repair their vehicles. However, if you still wish to keep your options open, the 2014 Honda Civic is a viable alternative.
