The introduction of the more rounded package in the crossover segment has hit the market of hatchbacks in recent years.
Although the R-Spec trim is only available in manual, which is actually what enthusiasts would want, it also comes with a tuned-up engine with other performance enhancements at a marginal price difference. If you’re looking for a soulful driving experience, then we recommend you to go for the Turbo R-Spec trim.
For the 2014 model year, the Hyundai Veloster is available in three trims; Base, Turbo R-Spec, and comes with a base price of $17,800. All the trims are available in a manual and automatic transmission, except the Turbo R-Spec trim. The 2014 Veloster rivals the likes of 2014 Scion tC, and 2014 Volkswagen Beetle.
The major trim levels of the 2014 Hyundai Veloster are; Base, Turbo R-Spec, and Turbo. A RE: FLEX edition builds on the base trim and adds a few features. The Base costs $17,800 with the manual configuration. It comes with17-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running headlights, cruise control, height-adjustable driver’s seat, 7.0-inch touchscreen display, 6-speaker audio system, satellite radio, cruise control, rearview camera, and heated mirrors. The Style package adds a panoramic sunroof.
The RE: FLEX edition adds 18-inch wheels, fog lights, LED tail lights, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, aluminum trim pedals, an upgraded audio system, and exterior chrome trim. This edition will cost you $21,650. The Turbo R-Spec is the only trim available only in a manual transmission. It has a price tag of $21,300 and includes all the features of the RE: FLEX and a few more features are unlocked. It offers a lower body kit, sport-tuned suspension, a more powerful engine, a torque-vectoring system, and an Active sound design feature.

The Turbo is the top-tier trim costing $22,300. Unlike the performance-focused R-Spec, the Turbo offers more practicality. It continues the 18-inch wheels but with a unique design, adds leather upholstery, heated front seats, keyless ignition, and different styling elements. The Ultimate package adds rear parking sensors, panoramic sunroof, automatic headlights, automatic climate control, a 115V power outlet, and a navigation system.

The Base trim of the 2014 Veloster has a 1.6L Inline-4 under the hood which produces 138 hp and has a peak torque of 123 lb-ft. This may not seem as much, but the Veloster is a small car, and the engine is peppy enough to have fun. If that doesn’t satisfy your needs, then the Turbo trims come equipped with a more powerful engine. It is a Turbocharged 1.6L engine that is capable of putting out 201 hp and a max torque of 195 lb-ft. Although this engine is more powerful than the standard 1.6L, its turbo lags a bit sometimes, giving it a sluggish acceleration. This is seen more clearly when it is up against its rivals in a straight line.
The R-Spec is only available in a 6-speed manual transmission, but all other trims can be fitted with a 6-speed automatic. The power is delivered only to the front wheels. That being said, it has a great grip around tight corners, and it is sufficiently easy to maneuver this small car. However, the ride quality needs an improvement as you can feel the firmness when you pass over a sharp bump.

The standard naturally aspirated Inline-4 engine hardly beats anyone in terms of power. Only the Fiat 500 base variant has less power than the Veloster, however, Fiat 500 also offers a turbo variant of the same 1.4L inline-4 engine in its higher trims. The biggest and the most powerful standard engine is offered by the 2014 Scion tC, producing almost 180 horses. Volkswagen Beetle offers an Inline-5 in the base variant, but that is to be replaced by a locally sourced 1.8L Turbo inline-4 mid-2014.
The fuel economy is one of the strong points of the 2014 Hyundai Veloster. Its standard engine manages to do 26 mpg around cities, 35 mpg on the highways, which gives it a combined mileage of an impressive 30 mpg. The turbocharged version of the 1.6L does not do so bad itself. It manages to offer 24 mpg in the city, 31 mpg on the highway, and 27 mpg of combined fuel economy, which is still admirable.

The 2014 Fiat 500 does wonders in this segment by achieving a combined fuel economy of 35 mpg in its base avatar, but the economy drops to 30 mpg combined with the turbo motor. Its fuel tank capacity, however, is the least when compared to other cars, hence giving it an average range. With a capacity of 14.5 gallons, the 2014 Volkswagen Beetle and the 2014 Scion tC share the biggest fuel tanks in this segment.
The front row seats of the 2014 Hyundai Veloster are spacious. They have plenty of room to accommodate 2 people with ease. This however doesn’t translate to the rear row of seats. Because of its weirdly placed side door, back seats are hardly comfortable for anyone taller than 6 feet. Although the 2014 Veloster claims to be a 4-seater, the rear seats are best suited for kids. The cabin itself along with the dashboard and center console holds a contemporary and sleek design. The use of hard plastic is almost everywhere, but because of its textured finish, it gives a good appearance and has a nice touch to it.
The base Veloster comes with air-conditioning, a height-adjustable driver seat, and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, that’s about it. You need to add a style package or upgrade to RE: FLEX edition to add more creature comforts. The optional Style package adds a panoramic sunroof, cloth/leatherette premium vinyl upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, aluminum-trimmed pedals, and piano-black interior trim, while RE: FLEX edition adds leather upholstery and an upgraded audio system.

As far as interior space is concerned, the 2014 Hyundai Veloster has the best in class first row space. The space at the back, however, is more in the 2014 Scion tC. The 2014 Hyundai Veloster is equipped with a 7.0-inch touchscreen display. The dashboard is well-designed, and the screen sits in such a way that the driver and passenger can reach it comfortably. The setup itself is well-organized. The buttons surround the screen from the sides and are well-labeled with a gloss back finish. The screen itself is high-resolution with an easy-to-understand interface.
As standard equipment, you get a CD player, satellite radio, Pandora Internet radio capability, iPod/USB audio interface, BlueLink emergency telematics, Bluetooth phone with audio connectivity, and a six-speaker sound system. The 2014 Hyundai Veloster has some out-of-the-box exterior styling. With one door on the driver’s side, two doors on the passenger’s side, and one in the rear, it has a unique layout. The Veloster has many versatile forms. A coupe, 5-door, and a sporty small car all at once. The Turbo trim has some distinctive features that set it apart from the Base, while the R-Spec receives more performance upgrades. The front end of the car has an aggressive tone to it and gives it that sporty hatchback look. It comprises a huge grille, fog lights, aggressive-looking Halogen Daytime running LED headlights that cut through the air damps right below it, and a sculpted hood.

Really great driving wise, but you can't just jump in and play music. Great responsive steering, really nice size inside and out. Looks really cool. Lots of features in the touch pad. Average mpg on the dash is awesome, my last car didn't have that. I wish I knew how to upload a custom home screen color though, it only has 3 options. It gets me around 30mpg on the highway 26 in town. Interior is ...
