Overview

Debuted in the year 2011, the Veloster is a truly unique looking and one-of-a-kind car from Hyundai. It comes in a unique configuration with three doors, one on the driver side, and two on the passenger side for uncompromised rear-seat access. The rear door on the passenger side is a conventionally hinged door with a hidden door handle to maintain its coupe design. The Veloster combines design elements of a coupe with the functionality and practicality of a hatchback.

Buying Advice

Although the RE:MIX trim spices up things with a body kit and unique 18” alloy wheels, you are better off going for the base trim if you want to save on your hard-earned cash and if you are okay with the slow performance of the car. But if you want to enjoy driving your car, the Turbo trim is your best bet.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

While the previous model year of the Veloster was available in a single well-appointed trim level, the 2013 Veloster adds two new trim levels increasing the trim level count to three. Depending on the trim level and spec, the 2013 Veloster has a starting price range of $17,600 to $23,100. Although a pretty decent car at its price point, it faces steep competition from the likes of Honda CR-Z, Scion tC, Mini Cooper, and other similar “different” or “unique” hatchbacks in the market.

Features
9.9/10

The 2013 Hyundai Veloster is available in three different trim levels to choose from, viz. Base, RE:MIX, and the top-of-the-line Turbo. While the base trim sports minimal features aimed at easing user experience, advanced features that also increase practicality are available with the mid- and top-level trims. In addition to the basic specifications, one also gets the option to choose from several optional packages including the Sport, Tech, and Ultimate Package which include an array of features like a sunroof, better tires, and an upgraded sound system.

But if you want to enjoy driving your car, the Turbo trim is your best bet.

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

The 2013 Hyundai Veloster’s engine depends on the trim level you choose. The car gets two different powertrain options for the 2013 model. The non-turbo trims, that is the base, and the RE:MIX trims get the standard 1.6L Inline-4 engine producing 138 HP and 132 lb-ft of torque when paired with the standard 6-speed manual transmission. Opting for the 6-speed DCT will drop the power output figures to 132 HP and 120 lb-ft of torque. The performance figures from this engine are pretty underwhelming. With this engine, the Hyundai Veloster can go from 0 to 60 mph in 9.5 seconds, which is pretty slow for any car the DCT variant being even slower.

If you want better performance, you have to get the Veloster Turbo which comes with a more powerful 1.6L turbocharged Inline-4 engine under the hood. It produces a maximum of 201 HP and 195 lb-ft, which are the kind of power figures that suits the sporty characteristics of the car. The Turbo also gets the same gearbox options. The Turbo can hit 60 mph from a standstill in and around 7.7 seconds, which is pretty decent. The front-wheel-drive drivetrain is the only drivetrain option on offer.

While the Veloster with the standard engine can only hit a maximum of 110 mph, competitors like the Honda and Scion manage 124 and 127mph, respectively. Speaking about competitors, the 2011 tC provides a pretty solid package at a competitive price point. Its standard engine is bigger and more powerful than the ones of its competitors belting 180hp of power. The Honda CR-Z is the only hybrid hatchback here and comes with sportier driving dynamics as compared to the Veloster, but it is also one of the slower options taking 8.8 seconds. The Mini Cooper is the most surprising package that manages quicker timings than standard despite being the least powerful.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

The 2013 Hyundai Veloster gas mileage numbers are quite impressive for the segment and the fact that it is quite a compact vehicle as well. The standard naturally aspirated 1.6L engine with the standard 6-speed manual transmission can deliver 27, 37, and 31 MPG in the city, highway, and combined respectively. Opting for the more powerful Turbo trim will drop the mileage figures to 24, 35, and 28 MPG in the same order for the manual transmission variant.

Firstly, the Scion tC, which has one of the more powerful base variants in the competition, has underwhelming figures in terms of fuel economy for its segment, which is expected. The Honda CR-Z takes the crown with impressive fuel economy figures of 31, 38, and 34 MPG in the city, highway, and combined, respectively, thanks to its hybrid powertrain. The Mini Cooper is quite close to the Honda CR-Z and impresses with its mileage of 383 miles within the city as compared to the Veloster that averages 356 miles.

Interior
6.0/10

The 2013 Hyundai Veloster interior is stylish with upscale materials all around, and in typical Hyundai fashion, the build quality is pretty solid as well. It might not have conveniences like power-adjustable seats, but it does get heated front seats in the Turbo model. The front seats are pretty comfortable and supportive, and the rear seats can only be accessed by the only rear door on the passenger side of the car. Speaking about the rear, the 2nd row of the car is not very roomy.

The cargo space of 15.5 cubic feet of the Veloster is also impressive for a 3-door 4-seater hatchback. Since the rear seats cannot be folded, it is the maximum cargo space you get in the Hyundai Veloster. The CR-Z might have a crazy truck space of 25.1 cubic feet, but it is a 2-seater hatchback. The Mini Cooper might be the least impressive in terms of cargo space with a capacity of 5.7 cubic feet, but its rear seat can be folded to increase the cargo space to a maximum of 24.0 cubic feet.

Major interior features include:

  • Heated front seats
  • Leather upholstery
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • LED cabin lighting
  • Monogrammed floor mats

How intuitive is the 2013 Hyundai Veloster’s infotainment unit?

Every 2013 Veloster comes with a large 7-inch multimedia LCD touchscreen. There's also an available 115V outlet for power and connections for video display that lets you watch movies and even play Xbox 360 while the car is parked. It also gets Hyundai’s Blue Link Telematics which provides innovative in-car wireless connectivity along with advanced Voice Text Messaging, traffic alerts, SOS Emergency Assistance, and more. Like all other features, specifications increase as one moves up the trim ladder.

Some of the key infotainment features are:

  • Hyundai BlueLink
  • Bluetooth Connectivity for phone and audio streaming
  • Pandora internet radio
  • iPod/USB audio interface
  • Optional dimensional premium audio
  • Six-speaker audio system as standard

Exterior
9.0/10

The 2013 Hyundai Veloster exterior is quite unique-looking from every angle, and the three-door setup is the cherry on top. Starting with the looks, the base trim, the RE:MIX trim gets its unique body kit while the Turbo trim also gets some unique design elements to make them distinctive from each other. It has a pretty unique silhouette to its design, and the 2+1 door Kamm back coupe design makes it look more like a hatchback, to be honest.

Although it might not look like it, the Hyundai Veloster is one of the longer cars in its segment, which also results in a comparatively longer wheelbase as well. That being said, the Scion tC is the longest, and heaviest car here in its segment, along with having the longest wheelbase and the highest ground clearance in its class as well.

A few major exterior features of the Hyundai Veloster include:

  • Unique front fascia, fog lights, and ground effects
  • Projector headlights with unique LED headlight accents
  • Three-door layout
  • 17-inch alloy wheels with optional 18-inch wheels
  • Rear spoiler

Safety
8.0/10

Standard safety features for the 2013 Hyundai Veloster gets basic specifications but other than that, you don’t get much in terms of active safety features and driving aids, if at all. While there aren’t any crash reports from NHTSA on the 2013 Veloster, IIHS did their tests and the Veloster faired pretty well. It got the highest possible rating in three out of the five tests performed on it. So, the Veloster might be able to protect its occupants during the event of a crash, but it won’t be very good in preventing the crash from happening in the first place due to the lack of active driving aids.

Some of the key safety features include:

  • Electronic stability system with traction control
  • Automatic crash notification
  • BlueLink system
  • Remote door unlock
  • On-demand roadside assistance
  • Front-seat side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags

Final Verdict

The 2013 Hyundai Veloster is a pretty unique machine. Its quirky looks, sporty appeal, comfortable and stylish-looking interior with good build quality puts it in a unique position on its own in the market. The fact the Hyundai lets you choose between non-sporty standard trims, and a sporty Turbo trim is a nice touch. While the lack of features and safety tech might be apparent, but it is what you would expect at its segment and price point. The Hyundai Veloster is not a bad car from any angle, but the fact that there are better cars in its segment makes it a bit hard to recommend unless you are a fan of its unique styling and its 2+1 door setup, the Veloster will not disappoint.
