Overview

The 2022 Ford EcoSport is a decent subcompact SUV offering from Ford. The previously existing three-cylinder turbo engine is no longer on offer. Ford has also discontinued the front wheel drive drivetrain and AWD is offered as standard.  The 2022 Ford EcoSport price starts at $22,040 and an addtional destination fee of $1,295 is levied on the base price of every model. Owing to the elimination of base engine and FWD, the EcoSport 2022 is $1,645 more expensive than the last year model.

Featuring a 4-trim lineup of S, SE, SES and Titanium, the 2022 Ford EcoSport MSRP can be an expense of $22,040-$28,395 this season.  Having said that, it simply translates to the fact that the range-leader 2022 Ford EcoSport Titanium will cost you $6,355 more than the base EcoSport SE for enhanced specs and assets.

We Recommend

The 2022 Ford EcoSport Titanium is our recommendation for its long list of desirable features and creature comforts. With a starting price of $28,395 and an msrp of $29,690, the Titanium trim has a lot to offer.

The EcoSport will be discontinued after the 2022 model year and this might be your very last chance to own one. With a 2.0-liter inline-four engine, producing 166 horsepower, the performance is underwhelming. The 2022 Ford EcoSport mpg of 25 mpg (combined) is lower than its rivals. The cargo capacity is 20.9 cubic feet, while the 2022 Ford EcoSport towing capacity is limited to 2,000 pounds. Ford's subcompact SUV offers better performance than the Honda HR-V, better cargo space than the Mazda CX-3 and higher ground clearance than the Chevrolet Trax. Our Ford Ecosport 2022 review consists of detailed comparison with its rivals.

2022 Ford EcoSport for sale

Ford's subcompact SUV can be financed at 1.9-7.9% APR with a term ranging from 36-84 months. The monthly payments vary between $327-$601 and down payment is $2,334. Similarly, it can be leased for 36 months with $266 monthly payments and $2,334 due at signing.

For budget-oriented buyers, the used 2022 Ford EcoSport can be availed of with a base price of $22,353. Going for older model years like the 2021 EcoSport could be a matter of $8,450 and the 2020 Ford EcoSport can cost as much as $4,995 along with a listing of 5,331 in total.

Buying Advice

The Titanium trim at $28,340 is the best trim in the lineup. Be it ActiveX perforated heated seats or the Bang & Olufsen Sound System, the Titanium gets them as a standard along with exclusive wheels designs. Also, the standard intelligent 4WD with AdvanceTrac and Roll Stability assists it in easy maneuvering. On the whole, this trim is self-sufficient and does not need any further expense on additional packages.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

"The EcoSport has a fun attitude and cool features, but advanced driver-assist systems and stellar fuel economy are not among them." - AUTOTRADER

The 2022 Ford EcoSport is a carry-over model of the 2021 model year. The 2020 Ford Ecosport scored an overall 79/100 and a score of 83/100 in the J.D. Power Consumer Rating and similar results can be expected for the 2022 model year as well. With zero recalls and just two complaints registered with the NHTSA, the 2022 Ford Ecosport problems are not significant in nature.

Surely, the recall history and consumer ratings point at its reliability. Regarding its maintenance cost, the value does not exceed $4,800 after 5 years while the fuel expense is restricted at $8,000. In addition to that, its resale value depreciates by some $8,000 after the first year and decreases up to $15,000 as per 5-year ownership. In totality, the real cost to own a Ford EcoSport comes to around $40,000 within the same time period.

Buying Advice

The Titanium trim at $26,895 is the best trim in the lineup.

Features
4.0/10

"The EcoSport, while offering the tall seating position many buyers are looking for, fails to provide much more than that." - Car And Driver

The 2022 Ford EcoSport has a 4-trim production lineup that begins with S at an MSRP of $22,040. This configuration gets SYNC with a 4.2-inch display and a 4-speaker audio unit as standard. Along with that, the seats are manually adjustable and are cloth-trimmed. But, the EcoSport SE trim at $25,455 upgrades these features to SYNC 3 and heated front seats respectively in pairing with an added electronic automatic temperature control. The EcoSport Titanium trim further enhances the interior engagement with the 10-Speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system (optional) and ActiveX with perforation, heated front bucket seats. It also gets exclusive 17-Inch premium Dark Stainless-Painted machined aluminum wheels over the standard 16-inch wheels.

The EcoSport SES trim that costs $28,205, is armed with sport-tuned suspension and BLIS safety features on the outside. It also offers 6-way powered driver's seat, second row 60/40 split-fold rear seats, seven-speaker audio system and voice-activated touchscreen navigation. Just like the Titanium trim, the SES also gets a power moonroof with sunshade. The SES trim adds steering mounted controls, chrome insert with unique stitching, ano-gray colored isntrument panel applique and center fold console with armrest.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

"Unfortunately, there are some significant deficiencies elsewhere, such as a lack of advanced driver aids, a choppy ride and disappointing fuel economy." - Edmunds

The 2022 Ford Ecosport offers an EPA-estimated gas mileage of 23/29/25 mpg in city/highway/combined driving conditions. With a gas tank size of 13.8 gallons, the Ecosport 2022 can travel up to 317/400/345 miles in city/highway/combined driving conditions. The rivals come with FWD as standard and offer better fuel economy and driving range than the Ecosport.

The EcoSport is 6 MPG less efficient than the Mazda CX-3 resulting in 52 miles lesser combined range reach. Whereas the Chevrolet Trax has 3 MPG more efficiency and a 0.2-gallon bigger fuel tank than the EcoSport that helps it to have 47 miles extra. The Honda HR-V comes close to it but owing to smaller gas tank, delivers less range. The Mazda CX-3 is the most fuel efficient and delivers better range in combined conditions despite having a smaller gas tank.

Interior
4.0/10

"Though this Ford has easy maneuverability in tight spaces and abundant cargo room, its negatives far outweigh its positives." - cars.usnews

Step inside the EcoSport 2022 interior and a practical spacious cabin serves you a melange of cloth and leatherette finishes. Right from the Medium Light Stone cloth-trimmed seats in the S trim to Ebony Back ActiveX Perforated seats in the SES, it undergoes massive changes as we move up the trim scale. However, the hard plastic finesse of the inserts remains constant across the lineup and some buyers would be disappointed. The front seats are decently spacious but the rear ones feel cramped.

Considering the comfort of the 2022 EcoSport cabin, the heated seats begin from SE trim onwards. But the 6-way driver's seat power adjustability and heated steering wheel are integrated for the Titanium and SES trims only. Also, it does have a flexible cargo space that can be varied from 20.9 cu-ft to 50 cu-ft. Alongside that, comes a Cargo Space Management as well that costs an additional $110 that can be availed of. The cooled glove box helps to keep your refreshments chilled.

The Mazda CX-3 offers the least cargo capacity and rear seat legroom. The Honda HR-V offers the best rear seat legroom, followed by Ford EcoSport, Chevrolet Trax and Mazda CX-3.

The 6-speaker audio unit in the S trim upgrades to an exclusive 9-speaker Bang & Olufsen Sound System in the Titanium trim. • Heated front seats
  • 6-way power adjustable driver seats
  • SYNC with 4.2-inch display

  • SiriusXM
  • 9-speaker Bang & Olufsen speaker system

Exterior

"Ford introduced the model for 2018 as a Fiesta-based mini ute with a high seating position and decent ground clearance." - MotorTrend

The 2022 Ford EcoSport is dimensionally unchanged and its front fascia remains unchanged in its farewell model. The eight standard exterior color options such as Smoke and Blue Metallic and two optional ones including the White Platinum and Ruby Red at $395 are also available to choose from. In addition to that, the Quad-Beam Signature LEDs have been incorporated for long-range high-intensity lighting.

The 2022 EcoSport rides on a range of different wheels ranging from 16-inch alloy to 17-inch alloy ones of different accents. Even the top has been given consideration with a power moonroof for the SE, Titanium, and SES trims. Apart from these, there are some appearance packages too such as the SE Appearance Package at $495 and the standard SES Black Appearance Package on offer.

The safety rating of the 2022 Ford EcoSport has not been marked by the NHTSA and IIHS for the 2022 and 2021 model years yet. Considering the 2020 model year, the EcoSport has scored a 4-star NHTSA rating that can be expected to be true for the upcoming model as well. Apart from this, the 2022 EcoSport has been equipped with different safety features such as:

  • Blind Spot Information System with Cross-Traffic Alert
  • SOS Post Crash Alert System
  • Safety Canopy System
  • Emergency Brake Assist System
  • Electronic stability control and traction control

Competition
3.0/10

2022 Ford EcoSport vs 2022 Honda HR-V

The 2022 Ford EcoSport and the 2022 Honda HR-V have almost the same acceleration and quarter-mile timing. But the latter takes the lead in fuel economy and corresponding range along with better spaciousness inside the cabin. Even the HR-V is much more appealing in its exterior styling. So, the Honda gets the preference between the two.

2022 Ford EcoSport vs 2022 Chevrolet Trax

The 2022 Chevrolet Trax has better acceleration and fuel economy than the 2022 Ford EcoSport. But the Ford gets a more balanced cabin and more cargo space for storage. It is also more compact that helps it in its handling. On the whole, both of them are at par with each other and can be preferred.

2022 Ford EcoSport vs 2021 Mazda CX-3

The 2022 Ford EcoSport has got more roominess inside the cabin despite being relatively smaller and more compact. This allows it to have easy maneuvering and comfort seating. However, it lags behind the Mazda CX-3 by a wide margin in performance parameters and fuel practicality. Also, the Mazda CX-3 has that styling that gives it a slight edge over the practicality index. Therefore, the Mazda gets the favor here.

Final Verdict
3.0/10

The 2022 Ford EcoSport is one spacious subcompact SUV at an affordable price tag. The added tech-ends in the higher trims are also content as per the expenses. However, it lacks the performance virtues that its rivals have on offer within the same price range. Therefore, it is advisable to have to go through other aforementioned rivals as well before finalizing.
