Overview

With a stunning exterior design and lavish interiors, the 2017 BMW X6 outrightly does seem worthy of its base price $62,500. Under its hood it offers a 3.0L engine that generates 300 hp as its standard offering, the high-end trims get a powerful 4.4L V8 engine that generates 445hp. It also goes ahead to offer an acceptable gas mileage for its standard engine.

All seems well and good for the 2017 X6 until we consider its ambitious rivals such as the 2017 Audi Q7 and the Infiniti QX70. Facing a tough time in literally every aspect, the BMW fails to offer as the 2017 Audi Q7 does. Astonishing is the fact that despite having a better offering, Audi comes along with the price tag of $59,500, it is significantly lower than the asking price of the BMW, $62,500.

Buying Advice

For all the X6 models the standard electronics features include BMW's iDrive interface with a touchpad controller and a new 10.2-inch touchscreen. Other infotainment features are added with the optional packages. We would recommend the mid-spec xDrive35i for its value for money appeal.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2017 BMW X6 offers enough variety to choose from, putting 3 trims and 2 engine configurations on the table. The price for the 2017 model year ranges from $62,500-$77,450. The standard trims offered to get a 3.0L 6-cylinder turbo engine that easily generates 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. With such engine configurations, the Beemer can zoom from 0-60 mph in just 6.0 seconds.

Apart from its performance, it has a decent fuel economy number against its competition. With regard to interiors, it is one of the most spacious offerings in its segment. However, this is only for the passenger room as its cargo room is slightly compromised. With a bespoke safety offering and marvelous exteriors, the 2017 BMW X6 is here to win hearts and allure its onlookers.

Features
8.0/10

"Despite its outstanding handling and powerful engines, the 2017 BMW X6 places in the bottom third of our luxury midsize SUV rankings because of its cramped interior and small cargo hold." - Cars.USnews

The 2017 BMW X6 is available in three trim levels for its lineup. The powertrain offered varies between a 3.0L 6-cylinder engine and a 4.4L 8-cylinder engine. The standard engine offering is the former one and it comes in 2 out of the 3 trims available. The difference between these two trims is the drivetrain, the sDrive35i at a price of $62,500 is an RWD and the xDrive35i is an AWD, priced at $64,800.

With regard to the other differences amongst these trims, it is solely to do with the interior offering and the luxuries therein. The third trim offered is the BMW xDrive50i, priced at $77,450. It comes equipped with a 4.4L 8-cylinder engine.

We recommend

Within a price tag of $65,000, we recommend you to go in for the xDrive35i, even though it gets the very same powertrain as the $62,500 sDrive35i, it gets advanced performance features and leather interiors along with tech fittings.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

"The base rear-wheel drive X6 sDrive35i gets an EPA-estimated 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, which puts it toward the bottom of the luxury midsize SUV class." - Cars.USnews

For fuel efficiency, the 2017 BMW X6 gets a decent offering. It generates the least power in class and its average fuel efficiency is actually questionable. It gets an EPA reading of 18/24/20 for city/highway/combined respectively.

Against its competition, the rankings follow the brake performance chart. We see the Audi grabbing the premier position once again with an offering of 19/25/21 for city/highway/combined respectively. The Infiniti QX70 ranks behind the BMW X6, losing out by a couple of miles per gallon.

Interior
5.0/10

"BMW owners will feel right at home inside a 2017 X6 SUV. The front seats are a comfortable and rewarding place to be, and the leathers are sublime and padded everywhere, and the trim and controls are all top-notch." - Kelley Blue Book

Seating and Comfort of the 2017 BMW X6

2017 BMW X6 offers a lavish interior for the five individuals it accommodates. Equipped with 20-way power-adjustable seats, the X6 provides comfort and support both alike. The interiors come clad in plush materials and luxury fittings. With regard to passenger dimension, the front row is significantly larger than the second, though the latter isn't that bad.

When put up against its competition, it is at war with the Infiniti QX70. Infiniti wins the battle of the second-row passenger space by a small margin. The 2017 Audi Q7 offers a slightly smaller front row compared to the other two rivals. But, it has the largest second row in class followed by a decent third row of seats. It is the only vehicle to accommodate 7 individuals.

Infotainment System of the 2017 BMW X6

BMW goes all in even for its infotainment system, it offers a 5.0-inch touchscreen with an iDrive infotainment system installed. This is complemented by a world-class Harman Kardon 600 watt sound system. It also offers basic features such as wireless charging and a Wi-Fi hotspot, the other features offered are mentioned below:

  • Bluetooth
  • Navigation
  • HD Radio
  • Head-Up Display
  • USB connectivity
  • Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Wireless charging
  • TV tuner
  • Harman Kardon 600-watt sound system

Cargo volume of the 2017 BMW X6

Equipped with only two rows of seats one would expect the trunk space of the 2017 X6 to be large enough or at least competitive. However, the 2017 BMW offers a maximum cargo room of 59.7 cubic feet and a standard room of 26.6 cubic feet. It is obvious that this isn't even close to the best offering in class.

Surprisingly, it is the Audi Q7 that offers the maximum cargo room, but its standard cargo room is the smallest, this is obviously due to the third row of seats that eats into the boot space. Maximum it can offer 71.6 cubic feet of room. This is followed by the offering of the Infiniti QX70, which provides a maximum of 62 cubic feet.

Overall the body is aerodynamic and extremely sportive. With regard to dimension, it is indeed the widest and tallest car in the class.

The Infiniti QX70 weighs the least and has the least ground clearance, height, width, length, and wheelbase. Dimensions apart, you might also want to explore the exterior features that the BMW offers.

2017 Infiniti QX70 vs 2017 BMW X6

Up against the Infiniti QX70, the BMW offers a better acceleration time, brake performance, fuel economy, interior room, and safety offering. It goes without saying that it is the 2017 X6 that has a better exterior design and style. However, the QX70 offers better performance with a price tag that is way lower than the asking price of the BMW, $64,800.

2017 Audi Q7 vs 2017 BMW X6

Made to compete against the 2017 Audi Q7, the BMW faces a whole lot of difficulty. Right from the engine configuration and specifications to its acceleration performance and its fuel efficiency, the Beemer struggles to keep up. There is no competition in the interior space provided, as clearly the Audi takes the lead. The only place where the BMW has an edge over the Audi is for its exterior design and styling.

Final Verdict

With an exterior body design that is loved by all, the 2017 BMW X6 even offers a strong and capable engine. Offered at a price of $62,500 for the base trim, the sDrive35i, the price goes up to $77,450 for the high-end trim, the xDrive50i. Facing serious competition from the 2017 Audi Q7, this Beemer manages to put up a fine performance, fuel efficiency, and reliable offering. However, its price tag is significantly higher than its competition and this might be a reason for you to back out from considering it.
