Speaking of rivals, the 2017 BMW M4 sees stiff competition from Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63, Ford Mustang GT, and Porsche 911 Carrera.

Interior
7.7/10

“The M4 looks similar to the rest of the 4-Series range inside but with a sprinkling of added M-ness in the form of unique seats, materials and probably a few too many M badges.”- CarBuzz

2017 BMW M4 Coupe Seating and Comfort

The 2017 BMW M4 Coupe is a two-door four-seat coupe. The cabin of the M4 coupe shows its allegiance towards being a driver-focused cockpit. The front seats are comfortable and offer good support, going around tight corners the well-bolstered seats snugs you from all sides and keeps you from sliding off. The rear seats on the other hand are not in the same leagues as the front one. They lack both in terms of headroom and legroom, the sloping roofline and the two-door step make it really an uphill task getting into the rear seats.

Moving to the other parts of the cabin as the M4 is based on the 4-Series you will see a lot of similarity in the design language although being an M car there are lots of M car design elements incorporated to make it stand apart from the regular 4-Series sedan. That said, the fit and finish level of the materials are class-leading. There are plenty of creature comfort features available as standard while a few features like heated rear seats and the steering wheel can only be had as a part of the optional Executive package.

The 2017 BMW M4 is neither the longest nor has the longest wheelbase among all the coupes yet it manages to provide better legroom in both the rows compared to the rivals. Although the BMW M4 has the least width among the rivals it manages to beat the shoulder room offered in both the rows by the Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 while the Ford Mustang offers the best shoulder room among all. As for the headroom, the Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 is 0.7-inches taller than the M4 yet the M4 offers better headroom in both the rows between the two.

2017 BMW M4 Coupe Infotainment System

The 2017 BMW M4 coupe gets an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that runs on the BMW's latest iDrive infotainment interface. The infotainment setup is probably the best among the German cars and offers a host of apps and BMW ConnectedDrive features. “A power bulge on the hood hints at the twin-turbocharged behemoth underneath, flared fenders wrap around bigger wheels, and its aero-friendly nose, side, and rear end help the M4 cut through the air.”- The Car Connection

2017 BMW M4 Coupe Dimension and Weight

The 2017 BMW M4 incorporates lots of design elements to not only make it look different from the regular 4-Series sedan but also make it stand apart from the M3 sedan. The M4 Coupe gets a long bonnet with an all-new design for the twin-kidney grille. Lower down the front intakes have got more angular looks. Moving to the sides, the 184.6-inches long M4 coupe neatly integrates the shoulder line with the side vents.

While the chunky wheel arches have been provided to accommodate wider rubber and bigger alloy wheels. The M4 coupe comes as a two-door coupe but the 110.7-inches of wheelbase is adequate to provide a spacious cabin inside. The rear profile gets a similar BMW treatment to it with the quad exhaust pipes sticks out below the rear bumper.

The AMG C 63 being the longer of the two offers a 1.1-inches extra wheelbase compared to the M4 coupe. That said, the M4 coupe gest the highest 4.7-inches of ground clearance which is 0.3-inches higher than the AMG C 63's ground clearance.

Safety
6.0/10

The 2017 BMW M4 coupe is a low-volume sports coupe that hasn't been tested by either the NHTSA or the IIHS and there is hardly any chance that either of them will test it in the future. The BMW M4 packs in a host of active and passive safety features which are generally standard in the segment but the majority of the advanced safety and driver-assist features are clubbed in the Driver Assistance Plus package.

Safety Features:

  • Rearview camera
  • Eight airbags
  • Traction and stability control
  • Available blind-spot monitor
  • Available lane departure alert
  • Available automatic emergency braking

2017 BMW M4 Coupe Vs 2017 Ford Mustang GT

The 2017 Ford Mustang GT can be had at half-price of the BMW M4 Coupe. For the cheaper price tag, the Mustang GT gets a big V8 that matches the power and torque figures of the BMW M4's twin-turbo V6. But the heavier Mustang GT loses out to the BMW M4 by a margin in both the 0-60 mph and quarter-mile runs. Powered by a V8 and being heavier the Mustang GT also returns lesser gas mileage compared to the M4.

Compare the cabin of both the coupes and you would see that the M4 not only has a more spacious cabin but also feel more luxurious and high-quality compared to the Mustang GT's cabin. That said, the BMW M4 is by far superior in every comparison compared to the Mustang GT and unless you are on a shoestring budget there is no reason why you should pick the Mustang GT over the more fun yet practical BMW M4 coupe.

2017 BMW M4 Coupe vs 2017 Mercedes Benz AMG C 63 Coupe

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 Coupe for almost the same money offers a twin-turbo V8 which is more powerful and torquey than the twin-turbo V6 of the BMW M4 Coupe. But the heavier AMG C 63 can just get two-tenths of a second lead of the BMW M4 in the 0-60 mph run and one-tenth in the quarter-mile. The AMG C 63 was able to match the city gas mileage of the BMW M4 coupe but out on the highway, it lost to the M4 by a margin of three mpg.

Moving inside there is no dearth of high-quality material and comfortable seats inside either of the two coupes and even the cabin space is also very similar. The BMW M4 although wins the practicality points by offering better trunk space. Thus if going for the most bang for bucks deal then surely the AMG C 63 will entice you more but as a driver's delight, the BMW M4 Coupe even with the smaller V6 engine is no less worthy.

Final Verdict

The 2017 BMW M4 coupe is a true driver's car that not only handles like a charm but can also go fast in straight lines. The BMW M4 being an M car gets all the performance upgrades in the form of adaptive suspension, better brakes, electronic differential, launch control, downshift rev-matching, and whatnot. Being a sports coupe its is very often the case that the practicality goes for a toss but yet again the BMW M4 surprises you with a spacious cabin and a generous boot.

That's not all, the BMW M4 is fast and yet it returns respectable gas mileage figures. Thus BMW has tried to incorporate every virtue it could inside the M4 and we couldn't agree more. Having said that, if you are looking for a sports coupe and don't want to shell out an extra twenty-grand for a Porsche 911 Carrera then the BMW M4 is the one to put your money in.
