Overview

The 2017 Jaguar F-Type Coupe is currently available for sale at a starting MSRP of $61,400 and is available in four trims- Base, Premium, S, and British Design Edition. The F-Type is also available in a convertible form. It is powered by a 3.0L supercharged V6 engine that makes 340 hp in the Base and Premium trims and 380 hp in the S and British Design Edition models. The F-Type is also available in R and SVR trim levels which are more powerful and hence, we have reviewed separately.

Even in its base form, the F-Type sprints from 0-60 MPH in 5.1 seconds and not to mention its impressive handling. However, its fuel economy is the lowest in its class. Coming to the interior, the F-Type offers a luxurious and spacious cabin for two people. It packs less safety tech than its rivals but has a strong resale value thanks to its good reliability ratings. The F-Type receives heavy competition from the likes of the BMW M2, the Porsche 718 Cayman, and the Mercedes-AMG C43 Coupe.

Buying Advice

The Premium trim is the best choice as it adds few features from the base trim and also comes with a lot of optional packages and accessories. The additional features include 14-way power sport seats, panoramic sunroof, keyless entry, adaptive headlights with cornering lamps, and memory settings for the exterior mirrors, steering wheel, and seats. We also recommend buying the Premium and Vision package as it adds all the available driver-assist features plus a power tailgate, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated seats and steering wheel, and power-folding, seated, and auto-dimming exterior mirrors.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Sports-car purity and performance in a pretty Jaguar- CarAndDriver

The Jaguar F-Type is the styling of an English gentleman with a perfect mix of luxury, elegance, and performance. The supercharged V6 engine produces plenty of punch while its excellent driving dynamics make it a driver's car. Although it lacks practicality, the F-Type's interior does not feel short of features. However, its fuel economy is a big concern.

The true cost to own the F-Type is $14,400 annually, which is more than an M2 or an AMG C43 but less than a Cayman. The main reason being that its maintenance and repair costs are higher. The F-Type has an above-average reliability score but has a strong resale value. The miles per dollar ratio is calculated to be 4.95, which is more than average.

Features

A special F-Type British Design Edition is also available and comes with unique features- MotorTrend

The Jaguar F-Type is available in four trims namely Base, Premium, S, and British Design Edition. You don't even have to spend above six figures to get a car that's really worth it. Owning the least expensive F-Type starts at $61,400 while the top-end British Design Edition model costs just above $98,000. The more powerful F-Type SVR has a starting price of $125,950.

There are so many features, options, and add-ons available in the F-Type but the prices vary a lot. Options include carbon-ceramic brakes, an adaptive suspension, and an active exhaust that sounds nothing short of a real Jaguar growling. Only the Premium and S trims are eligible for upgrading features while the Base trim comes with just a good set of standard features.

Fuel Economy
7.8/10

The V-6 F-Type gets reasonable gas mileage- The Car Connection

The supercharged engine in the Jaguar F-Type drinks more fuel to deliver athletic performance. The EPA-estimated fuel ratings are 16 MPG in the city, 24 MPG on a highway, 19 MPG combined. These fuel estimates are returned when using a manual transmission. Switching to an automatic transmission raises the bar to 19 MPG in the city, 28 MPG on a highway, and 22 MPG combined.

In its segment, the F-Type comes with a large fuel tank that measures 18.5 gallons in size. When filled with premium fuel, it can drive up to 370 miles in combined form while the models with an automatic transmission can deliver up to 435 miles. Compared to its rivals, the F-Type delivers the best range. Therefore, there would be fewer stops at the gas station in this vehicle.

Range (City/Highway/Combined; Miles) 296/444/370 338/439/388 247/356/301 348/487/417

The BMW M2 houses the most fuel-efficient engine though its fuel ratings are not much impressive due to its small tank. The Porsche 718 Cayman and the Mercedes-AMG C43 have similar MPG figures but the latter is slightly less efficient. On the contrary, the F-Type's fuel economy is considerably less for a sports car.

Interior
9.1/10

2017 Jaguar F-Type Seating and Comfort

The interior of the Jaguar F-Type is elegant with a beautiful fit and finish, and too nice to get out of. It is a strict two-seater and the seats are treated with leather. The seats are wonderfully plush and offer plenty of comforts. It has aggressive bolsters so it hugs you if you're going to take some sharp corners.  All the models get power-adjustable seats as standard whereas premium leather upholstery, heated seats, and steering wheel are optional.

Speaking of the steering wheel, it is wrapped in leather and you also get nifty paddle shifters with a bronze finish in the S trim. The huge panoramic sunroof lets in plenty of light and keeps the cabin airy. The head and legroom offered in the F-Type are good for an average-sized adult. Six-footers will find it uncomfortable as headroom is slightly less than its rivals. Also, the cabin is nicely insulated from the outside world, keeping the passengers cozy.

Rear Row (Head/Shoulder/Leg) (in) N/A N/A 36.5/53.4/33.0 35.6/51.7/32.0

Both the BMW M2 and the Mercedes-AMG C43 offer two more seats than the F-Type but they are not suitable for adults. The interior dimensions of the Porsche 718 Cayman are unknown but it offers adequate space for its occupants. The M2 offers more headroom than the F-Type, which is perfectly suitable for six-footers.

2017 Jaguar F-Type Infotainment System

All the models of the Jaguar F-Type come standard with an 8-inch touchscreen display that supports SiriusXM, Bluetooth connectivity, a single-disc CD player, HD radio, auxiliary audio input, and a USB port. Audiophiles will love the sound quality from the Meridian premium audio system with 12 speakers. InTouch Control apps let you use the infotainment system through your smartphone via a USB connection.

The touchscreen responds late to the user's inputs while using the navigation system and the graphics are not clean either. Ergonomics is beyond good as all the controls are within easy reach of the driver. There is no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto but you get an SD card reader. But honestly who cares. If you are in an F-Type and you missing your phone, then you're doing something wrong.

2017 Jaguar F-Type Interior Features

The Jaguar F-Type comes with a good amount of standard comfort and convenience features. These include:

  • Power tilt & telescopic multi-function leather steering wheel
  • 14-way power seats with power lumbar support
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Color-adjustable ambient lighting
  • Alloy foot pedals
  • 8-inch infotainment screen
  • 12-speaker Meridian premium sound system
  • Navigation system
  • SiriusXM

2017 Jaguar F-Type Cargo Capacity

The Jaguar F-Type is a sports car, so you can't expect a good cargo capacity. It offers only 11 cubic feet of cargo space in its trunk, which is still decent for a sports car. It can easily carry two large carry-on bags. A power liftgate is also available as an optional accessory. You also get some additional storage under the load floor.

The hatchback form of the F-Type is also very practical compared to a traditional trunk. It makes it easier to put large items in the back. However, the loading lip is not flat which makes it difficult to load the cargo. Speaking of interior storage, you will find a small storage cubby between the two seats. The door pockets are very small while the glovebox is decently sized.

Cargo Capacity (cu-ft.) 11.0 9.7 10.0 10.5

No other competitor can match the cargo offering of the F-Type. The closest to it is the Mercedes-AMG C43 and it is closely followed by the BMW M2. At 9.7 cubic feet, the Porsche 718 Cayman is the least practical vehicle. Apparently, these German rivals offer a bit more interior storage than the F-Type.

2017 Jaguar F-Type Dimensions and Weight

The Jaguar F-Type looks like it's going fast even when it's standing still. The Brits have always known how to make a gorgeous car. Each section of the car has several notable features. The front has an elegant sculpted look flanked by headlights pointing towards the grille. The F-Type sits at 4.4 inches above the ground, which is decent for a sports coupe. Its aerodynamic body and low ground clearance play a key role in its performance.

The side view is definitely the prettiest part of the F-Type. It's gracious and elegant with a beautifully measured roofline. The side sills are subtly emphasized and the 19-inch wheels look attractive. The wheelbase of the F-Type measures 103.2 inches, which is wider than most two-seater sports coupes. It reflects the spacious interior room of the vehicle. The rear looks far more aggressive with the thin taillights and a large diffuser hugging the middle-placed twin exhausts.

The Mercedes-AMG C43's wheelbase measures around 8 inches more than the F-Type.  This necessarily doesn't mean that its interior is roomy. A wide wheelbase also contributes to a more stable and comfortable ride. The low curb weight and ground clearance of the Porsche 718 Cayman are the two main reasons for its quick agility. At 4.8 inches, the BMW M2 has a high ground clearance, which is good for preventing its underbelly from scraping.

2017 Jaguar F-Type Exterior Features

Some cool exterior features of the Jaguar F-Type are listed below:

  • HID headlights
  • LED DRLs & taillights
  • Exterior entry lights
  • Rear fog lamps
  • Power-folding, heated exterior mirrors
  • Black grille with chrome surround
  • Electronically-controlled rear spoiler
  • Silver window trim
  • 19-inch alloy wheels
  • Dual exhaust polished aluminum tips

Safety
8.1/10

Safety does not tend to be an area of critical concern for many 2-seat sports coupe buyers- CarGurus

As with other luxurious sports cars, the Jaguar F-Type has neither been crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS. Therefore, we cannot comment anything on the F-Type's safety. Its strong and rigid aluminum body structure can absorb collision energy during a front-end collision to reduce the impact on the passengers.

Speaking of safety features, only a few of them are available in the F-Type. However, these features can help reduce the risk of an accident. Moreover, the six airbags installed in the cabin come to the rescue to protect you from serious injuries. The list of safety features available in the F-Type are:

  • Rearview Camera
  • Blind-Spot Monitoring
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Rear Park Assist
  • Rain-Sensing Windshield Wipers
  • Brake Assist

Competition
8.0/10

2017 Jaguar F-Type vs 2017 Porsche 718 Cayman

Starting at $66,300, the Porsche 718 Cayman is the fastest car in this segment as its low ground clearance helps to increase its potential for speed while also maintaining good fuel economy. Its driving dynamics are excellent in this segment. Like the F-Type, the Cayman is a strict 2-seater coupe but its trunk volume is slightly less. Also, the list of standard features in the Cayman is very few. But, the Cayman hosts a few more safety features than the F-Type.

2017 Jaguar F-Type vs 2017 BMW M2

The BMW M2 costs $8,900 cheaper than the F-Type. Its six-cylinder engine makes 25 hp more and hence, its acceleration is quicker by a second. What makes this coupe stand out is its outstanding fuel efficiency. The M2 is a 4-seater sports coupe but its cabin lacks legroom. On the contrary, the F-Type also offers less headroom than the M2. In terms of safety, the M2 has not been subjected to crash tests but hosts almost the same features as the F-Type.

2017 Jaguar F-Type vs 2017 Mercedes-AMG C43 Coupe

The Mercedes-AMG C43 is another cheaper alternative to the F-Type. It shines in terms of performance owing to its powerful engine and also delivers good fuel economy. The AMG C43's cabin is as spacious as the F-Type but offers more standard luxury features. It offers a seating capacity of up to 4 but its rear seats are not adult-friendly. It is the only car in this segment with a long list of driver-assist features, which makes it a safe pick in this segment.

Final Verdict

Whether it's the engine, the looks, or the performance, with the F-Type, Jaguar really put everything into it. It is a car made for enjoyment, fun, and elegance. Its not trying to be the most luxurious in its class. It knows its value and its contender as such and that it really good.
