Overview

The new Jaguar XF is the refreshed version of the Brit carmaker executive saloon and is positioned in between the entry-level XE and the range-topping XJ. The Jaguar's main competitors are the Audi A6 and the BMW 540i. The XF is less expensive than the two, starting at $54,285 and going up to $63,195.

There are two engine options for the 2017 Jaguar XF: a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 and a new turbodiesel 2.0-liter four-cylinder. The V6 produces 380 horsepower in S trim and 340 horsepower in all other trims.  The four-cylinder diesel engine produces 180 horsepower and 318 pound-feet of torque.

Buying Advice

All the trims are loaded with a decent number of creature comforts and tech gizmos but the trim to place your money on would have to be the XF Prestige as it is has all the features of XF Premium and a couple of much needed extras such as the 19-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats and front and rear park assist. You don’t have to break the bank here either at a reasonable $57,145…On the other hand, if you’re a buyer who couldn’t choose the F-type because of family pressure and would love to have a four-door equivalent to make school runs and grocery shop trips a little more interesting, choose the XF S at $63,195 and you won’t be disappointed.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

"The aluminum-bodied 2017 Jaguar XF is no lightweight when it comes to nimble handling or rear-seat space." - The Car Connection

The prime rivals of the Jaguar are highly reputed executive saloons who were dominating the market even before the XF was born in 2007, namely the Audi A6 and the BMW 540i. A 2.0-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder engine is new for the 2017 Jaguar XF. A supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine producing 340 hp is the standard while the S trim is tuned to produce 380 hp from the same engine configuration.

The 2017 Jaguar XF is a luxury midsize sedan available in five trim levels: base, Premium, Prestige, R-Sport, and S. The 2017 Jaguar XF starts at a price of $54,285 for the base trim and rises to $63,195 for the performance-oriented Sports trim. The 2017 Jaguar XF is expected to cost $28,109 in five years for gas, insurance, maintenance, and repairs.

Features
9.0/10

"Jaguar’s 2017 XF comes as nicely equipped as you’d expect of a high-end luxury sedan." - Kelley Blue Book

XF, XF Premium, XF Prestige, XF R-Sport, and the top-of-the-line XF S are the five trims available, omitting the diesel option. It's also worth noting that each of these trim is available with either RWD or AWD. There are two powertrain options for the 2017 Jaguar XF: a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 and a new turbodiesel 2.0-liter four-cylinder.

The 3.0 litre V6 engine in the XF S is twin-turbocharged and produces 380 horsepower, which is comparable to the F-type. Furthermore, this trim gets a unique S-Bodykit that looks aggressive enough to hint at the increased performance.

      19-inch Alloy Wheels
Leather seats with the 4-way Lumbar seat support

More than a dozen option packages and stand-alone options are available from Jaguar. A Cold Climate pack, for example, can be added to the Premium trim. The Technology package is available on Prestige, R-Sport, and S trims and features a 10.2-inch touchscreen, hard-drive-based navigation, a complete LED gauge cluster, and a 17-speaker sound system.

We recommend

All of the trims come with a reasonable number of creature comforts and electronic gadgets, but the XF Prestige is the one to go for because it includes all of the amenities of the XF Premium plus a few much-needed extras like 19-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats, and front and rear park assist. With a price tag of $57,145, you won't have to break the bank. If, on the other hand, you couldn't choose the F-type and would like to have a four-door counterpart to make school runs and grocery store visits a little more interesting, the XF S at $63,195 is a great option.

Fuel Economy
8.2/10

The Jaguar offers 20 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 23 mpg combined. The 2017 XF has a fuel capacity of 19.5 gallons and has a combined range of 448 miles.

Although Jaguar has put a lot of effort into improving fuel economy with technologies like the stop-start system, which works well in traffic, it still falls short of the A6 and the 540i, with a combined MPG of 23 vs 24 for the other two.

Interior
8.2/10

"Thoughtfully laid out, pleasingly spacious, and integrating several cool features, the XF’s interior has most of the trappings of high society." - Car and Driver

Seating and Comfort

The inside, while well-appointed and modern, feels overly understated in comparison to its competitors, and you'll feel the same while inside the XF. Sure, the materials are top-notch, with lovely leather-wrapped everything and slick piano black finishes on the dash, but it just appears like they didn't spend enough time making it appealing.

As befitting a car in this class, high-quality materials and finishes are used throughout the interior. Cabin capacity is similarly comparable, with somewhat more headroom for taller back seat occupants than the Audi A6, all while keeping the XF's elegant, low-roof appearance.

In both the front and back seats, tall passengers can ride comfortably all day. The highest XF S model comes with embossed leather upholstery and 14-way power-adjustable front seats. The climate system in the Jaguar appears to be simple, with dual-zone temperature controls and associated displays conveniently located for the driver and front passenger.

2017 Jaguar XF Sedan Infotainment System

The center console is devoid of buttons since it is dominated by a massive 12.3-inch infotainment screen that controls all of the vehicle's key audio/video functions. The "In-control" software, which is almost as excellent as the actual thing but lacks elegance, is Jaguar's own version of "Apple Car Play."

The infotainment screen provides a clear display and is also convenient to use from the driver’s point of view but takes longer to respond to a command, unlike rival systems. It comes equipped with tons of features like Adaptive cruise control,  a dynamic vehicle setting layout that provides information on acceleration timings, g-forces while cornering, customizable steering feedback, and alterable power delivery.

Cargo Volume

The trunk space in the current model of the XF has been compromised for broader rear seats and exterior features making it less practical than its rivals as seen below:

The XF is a gorgeous car and a step up from the XE with longer lines and proportions. It also has more distinctive rear taillights, so it should receive more attention on the road. - Motottrend

2017 Jaguar XF Sedan Dimensions and weight

This XF appears to be more boxy and conservative than the first-generation car from various perspectives, particularly the rear three-quarter. It shares a lot of styling cues with the smaller 2017 Jaguar XE, which is to be anticipated given its aluminum architecture.

T In terms of wheelbase, the XF is longer than the A6 at 116.5 inches. The 5-series has a longer wheelbase than the Jag at 117.1 inches. The ere has been some reduction in weight as well thanks to the aluminum construction.

Safety
7.5/10

The 2017 XF has not been crash-tested by the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) or the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). The safety features on this 2017 XF are nothing short of outstanding. One such feature is autonomous emergency braking, which alerts the driver and applies full braking force if he or she fails to do so in a critical driving situation.

A few other safety features are also given below:

  • Blind-Spot and Lane Keeping/Departure Warnings Accident Avoidance System
  • Child Seat Anchors
  • Dual Front Side-Mounted Airbags
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Front and Rear Head Airbags
  • Front Fog/Driving Lights

2017 Audi A6 Sedan Vs 2017 Jaguar XF

Even though it has a fewer horses than the XF, the 3.0 V6 in the Audi is a fantastic engine. It is unquestionably more fuel-efficient and dependable. The 3.0-liter V6 model produces 333 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque, propelling the A6 to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds, which is not as quick as the XF but not bad considering its weight. The Audi A6 has a starting price of $70,000.

2017 BMW 5-series Vs 2017 Jaguar XF

While the Jaguar XF focuses on increasing power, torque, and straight-line speed, the BMW 5 series focuses on distributing that power to the wheels in a way that inspires driver confidence like no other automobile. The beamer is powered by a 3.0 litre turbocharged in-line 6-cylinder engine that produces 335 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque and accelerates the 5-series to 60 mph from a standstill. The XF does provide great competition to the 5-series and can be considered as a direct rival. It starts off at $56,445 and is very well worth the hefty price tag.

Final Verdict

The 2017 XF has a few flaws, but it's well-designed and constructed enough to give the 5-series and A6 a run for their money. Although the XF isn't quite the perfect balance of practical luxury and performance, the work put in to make it safer and handle better than before cannot be overlooked, and if the formula isn't perfect, it's close. If you're weary of thinking German saloons are the best, give this British brat a try and you'll be a very happy chap indeed.
