Overview

Armed with a 1.5L turbocharged Inline-3 engine fused to a 6-speed automatic transmission setup, an electric motor engaged with a two-speed automatic transmission, and a 7.1-kWh battery, the 2017 BMW i8 makes 357 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. Standalone, the engine makes 228 horsepower while the electric motor manages 129 horsepower. This powertrain helps the 2017 BMW i8 cover 0-60 in 4.2 seconds. You can drive the i8 for 15 miles on the electric system alone, making it good for small trips in the city. Combined, the i8 achieves an impressive 76 MPGe while getting 28 MPG from the traditional engine alone. With a base price of MSRP of $143,400, the i8 makes a formidable competitor in the midsize coupe segment. It competes indirectly with the likes of the Acura NSX Hybrid which doesn't offer an electric range.

Buying Advice

We will not recommend the new and more expensive Protonic Red Edition as it mainly adds cosmetic changes to the base i8 trim. Meanwhile, some standard features offered on the 2017 i8 are 20-inch wheels, leather seats, an 11-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, a surround-view camera system, and more.
