Overview

One of the most popular cars in the compact sedan segment is the Toyota Corolla. Fortunately, the Corolla does seem to offer some updates in 2019 with tweaks in the feature front. Up for a major redesign next year, the 2019 Corolla is majorly unchanged this year. Sold in over 6 trim configurations, the prices for the 2019 Corolla sedan start from an MSRP of $18,497, while the Corolla hatchback is priced at $19,000.

On the powertrain front, the 2019 Corolla gets treated with a 136 hp 1.8L Inline-4 unit, mated to either a CVT or a 6-speed manual. Lagging in the powertrain front, the 2019 Corolla makes up for it in the reliability, practicality, and safety front, with the latest driver assistance tech being offered as standard. The rush in the SUV segments might be squeezing the market share of sedans, but that also drives this segment to bring about the changes to entice the customer base.

Buying Advice

There is a long list to choose from, but we would recommend sticking with the SE trim. It sits right in the middle with a great balance of price and features. It’s relatively affordable, and for that, you get SofTex seats, bigger wheels, and tiny upgrades over the LE model. We would also recommend getting the SE Premium Package, which would turn your infotainment system into something way more enjoyable and would also add a moonroof for extra illumination.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Offered in a myriad of trims with a lot of options, the Japanese car is either available as a sedan or a hatchback with decent practicality and reliability. The power unit, on the whole, is dreary, and is in dire need of an upgrade, while the exterior and interior front too, needs a much-needed redesign. The Corolla starts at an affordable pricing of $18,700, and it competes against the likes of Honda CivicMazda 3, and Hyundai Elantra. Continue with the article to know how it performs in front of its rivals in the segment.

Features
5.0/10

The 2019 Toyota Corolla has a lot of trims to offer. The base trim is the L, starting from $18,700, which then starts to expand to LE, LE Eco, SE, XLE, and XSE. There has been a bundle of features that have been bestowed in these trims. The L trim gets the 6.1” Entune infotainment, while the LE and other higher trims have the privilege of a 7” infotainment screen upgrade either as an option or a standard. Then comes the wheel sizing that ranges 15” in the L to 16” in LE and 17” in the SE. Once done with that, the XLE is introduced with a power-heated driver seat that can be an asset in cold weather. The Voice Recognition Commands have been kept constant throughout all the trims.

The price difference between the trims is not huge, and each trim adds a tiny bit more than the trim before it. Also, the XSE and XLE trims are the most luxurious ones. Packages like the Protection Package and Floor Liners/Mat Package have been given for use as well. Moreover, each trim, except the base one, gets its own Premium Package. These Premium Packages add a huge list of features such as infotainment system upgrades on LE and SE and optional moonroof on the XLE and XSE.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The 2019 Toyota Corolla boasts pretty decent fuel economy figures, but it's still less than what some people might expect. The EPA estimates are at 28 for the city, 36 for the highway, and 32 for combined driving. As you move to the XSE trim, the figures drop to 35 on the highway and 31 overall. If you go for the SE manual, it will offer you even less at 27/35/30 MPG for city/highway/combined driving, respectively. The fuel tank of 13.2 gallons is average in size, and it will deliver a range of 369/475/422 miles for city/highway/combined driving. The XSE trim will offer 369/462/409 miles. Meanwhile, the manual will get 356/462/396 miles for the same.

Although Corolla offers the best fuel economy and highest range among all, yet all of them are pretty distant from what they should be actually delivering. Except for the Corolla, others can be assumed to be siblings as they are pretty much the same only. The 2019 Elantra might squeeze out of them with its better range offering up to 406 miles on a daily commuting scale, but others can’t be simply devalued or delisted for their figures.

Interior
5.0/10

The 2019 Toyota Corolla has an upscale interior, considering its price point. It focuses more on practicality and function, but the aesthetics and quality are also applaudable. The design has been kept ergonomic. The L and LE trim come in basic cloth upholstery, while the SE upgrades the seat trim to fabric seats with SofTex sport fabric inserts. Meanwhile, the XLE and XSE trim introduce SofTex leather seat trim as a standard.

The L and LE have regular front seats, but the SE introduces Sport front seats. All three trims get a 6-way manually adjustable driver’s seat and a 4-way adjustable passenger’s seat, whereas the top two trims enjoy heated front seats with an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and a 4-way adjustable front passenger’s seat. These trims also enjoy a leather-wrapped steering wheel. When it comes to spacing, the front row is extremely spacious, and the rear row also boasts a large legroom space. However, the shoulder room can get a bit congested for three passengers.

The 2019 Toyota Corolla is equipped with a 6.1” Entune infotainment touchscreen at the center of the steep dashboard. The L, LE, and SE get the 6.1” screen which can be upgraded, but the XLE and XSE enjoy that upgraded 7” screen as standard. Standard infotainment features include AM/FM radio, MP3 playback, and USB port with iPod connectivity. The list goes on to include advanced voice recognition, Bluetooth, and Siri Eyes Free as well.

The 6-speakers audio unit comes standard and will be enough for you to handle. Upon upgrading the infotainment system, you will be greeted with Entune Audio Plus with Connected Navigation and the Scout GPS link app. The only major flaw is the exclusion of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as the standard feature.

Some of the highlights of the infotainment system are as follows:

  • 7.0-inch Entune infotainment system
  • SiriusXM Radio
  • HD Radio
  • HD radio traffic
  • Bluetooth
  • Siri Eyes Free
  • Scout GPS link navigation
  • 6-speaker sound system

Exterior
4.0/10

Well, the Toyota Corolla certainly has come a long way. It looks very modern, stylish, and handsome even by today’s standards. Is it attractive? Probably. Is it more stylish than some of its rivals? We will let you decide. The front is slightly inclined down the ground with grilles and Toyota badging in the middle. A typical sedan curvature with a sober rear has been adorned with either 15”, 16” and 17” wheels. As per the description, the L has 15” wheels, LE has 16” wheels, SE has 17” wheels along with XLE in 16” machined alloy wheels with dark accents, and the XSE features 17” machined alloy wheels with painted accents.

As per data, the Mazda 3 is the heaviest with the largest wheelbase which tends to hamper its dynamics by some margin. In addition to that, the Elantra and the Mazda 3 have the lowest ground clearance, giving them a sportier stance. Other than that, most of the dimensions are more or less similar. Therefore, nothing much can be concluded in anyone’s supremacy over the other

Safety
8.0/10

One great benefit of the Corolla is that all the trims come standard with Toyota Safety Sense P. So, the list of safety features in the base L trim is similar to the ones found in the top XSE trim. Of course, its chassis is extremely strong and safe too, and the NHTSA rating of 5-star is its testament. IIHS also sang praises about it, rating it “Good” in all the categories tested, except the headlight, where it gets “Acceptable”. It narrowly misses out on the ‘Top Safety Pick’ award. Apart from that, it gets a host of safety touch-ups like the Electronic Stability Control and Dynamic radar cruise control which together enhance the overall appeal of this family-friendly sedan. Thus, one can be carefree in its cabin and be at ease enjoying the driving pleasure.

Some of the standout safety features are as follows:

  • Dynamic radar cruise control
  • Lane departure warning system
  • Lane-keeping assist
  • Pre-collision warning and braking with pedestrian detection
  • Automatic high beams
  • Backup camera

2019 Toyota Corolla vs 2019 Honda Civic

Both are excellent offerings from the respective Japanese brands. The Honda Civic is a more popular counterpart of the Corolla. Performance-wise, the Civic is faster and handles better. The Corolla has more interior space, but the Civic has better cargo capacity. However, the Civic is not as frugal as the former. Overall, it’s a tough call as both are reliable and practical machines.

2019 Toyota Corolla vs 2019 Mazda 3

The Mazda 3’s biggest advantage is its powerful engine. It leaves the Corolla in the dust, and also has much better handling characteristics. The interior is upscale and premium and the car is also safe and reliable. Also, the Mazda 3 will certainly catch more eyes than the Corolla with its styling. It costs a tiny bit more, but it’s worth an investment.

Final Verdict

The Corolla has always been one of the most popular and well-known cars in the USA. If you just want a car that gets you from point A to point B without caring much about anything else, the 2019 Toyota Corolla is a perfect option. It’s extremely reliable, has an upscale interior, and is also very safe. For those looking for a bit more fun behind the wheel, the 2019 Honda Civic or the Mazda 3 will suffice.
