Overview

The 2019 Kia Sportage stands out in the competitive compact crossover class with its quirky exterior styling and engaging driving dynamics. Beyond its attractive pricing, the 2019 Sportage offers a long list of standard features, a well-rounded safety suite, and excellent 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty coverage. The Kia's five-passenger compact crossover delivers quick acceleration with the 240-horsepower turbocharged engine which is one of the most powerful engines in this class.  Though the 2019 Kia Sportage is a less spunky and a bigger version of the smaller Soul hatchback, it offers the athletic handling and decent mpg ratings of up to 23 city/30 highway. With adult-friendly seating in both rows, the Sportage's interior comes with loads of cool high-tech features. For 2019, the Kia Sportage is mostly unchanged and is available in three different trim levels: LX, EX, and SX Turbo.

2019 Kia Sportage Buying Advice

The 2019 Sportage carries over mostly unchanged from 2018. The 2019 Sportage comes with fewer available features for the base trim than before, and heated rear seats are no longer available across the range. Kia redesigned the Sportage last in 2017 while the upcoming 2020 Kia Sportage is going to be an all-new model. Opting for a used 2017 model will offer identical spec but at a lower price. In the Sportage lineup, the base LX's 181-hp engine provides adequate power for daily driving needs but the standard features list is not happening. Opting for EX makes more sense as it adds features like smartphone integration technology and other comfort features.

The base 2019 Kia Sportage LX comes with a base four-cylinder but a fuel-efficient engine with front-wheel drive. for shoppers looking for turbocharged Sportage, the SX starts at just over $33,000. All-wheel drive is optional on the LX, EX or SX trim levels. In terms of pricing, Sportage faces competition from Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, and Toyota RAV4

2019 Kia Sportage for sale

Features
7.0/10

The 2019 Kia Sportage is available in 3 trim levels - LX, EX, and SX Turbo. There are two engine options including a powerful turbocharged engine and a choice of FWD and AWD configuration. The base Sportage LX with FWD starts at $23,750 and the prices go up to $34,600 for the top-most SX Turbo trim with AWD. After the removal of the optional Technology Package for the 2019 model year, the base LX loses the option of autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot warning, and lane-departure warning. As the standard features list is underwhelming the deletion of this package will be detrimental to prospective buyers. Although as you move up the trim level, more technology features and driver assistance tech get added.

The optional packages available with the 2019 Sportage include LX Popular Package for $1,300 which adds heated front seats, bigger infotainment, dual-zone automatic climate control, etc. Next in line is the EX Sport Appearance Package for $990 and as the name suggests it adds various cosmetic and exterior enhancements. The other two packages include EX Premium Package for $1,700 and Technology Package for $2,900. The former adds creature comfort features and a panoramic sunroof while the latter adds driver-assist features, a power liftgate, Harman & Kardon sound system, a bigger touchscreen, and ventilated front seats.

The 2019 Kia Sportage LX can run around the city returning 23 mpg and on the highway, the crossover fares for an even better figure of 30 mpg. EPA estimates the crossover’s combined mpg at 26, which is subpar for a midsize crossover. Interior
7.0/10

"The 2019 Kia Sportage is a very nice place to spend time."- Kbb.com

Inside, the 2019 Kia Sportage offers a clean dashboard design that appears to be well-oriented toward the driver along with roomy interiors. Most of the controls are well nested below the lower part of the dash, well within the driver’s reach. The front seats are wide and supportive, with an ample amount of legroom and headroom to cater to individuals of all sizes. The driver’s seat gets a 6-way manually adjustable seat, although higher trims offer 10-way power-adjustable seats. Moving to the back, 3 passengers can be fitted inside by making some adequate adjustments, although on long drives you may be better off with only 2 backseaters. The Sportage sits 176.4 inches long and rides on a wheelbase of 105.1 inches, from which Kia brings a spacious cabin.

The 2019 Sportage offers a convenient 30.7 cubes of space behind its 2nd-row seats, which is pretty good but trails behind the rivals such as the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. Folding them down opens up a maximum cargo space of 60.1 cubic feet. The cargo space provides adequate luggage room for four people’s short vacation luggage. The cargo floor sits at a low height and a smart power tailgate makes the cargo loading easy for the driver.

The segment of midsize crossover features a more or less similar cabin space with a few inches here and there across the different offerings from the brands. The 2019 Sportage offers decent interior dimensions for its passengers to feel comfortable. But the Subaru Forester leads the show with the overall more space in both the rows. While the competition for cabin space on offer is closely contested between the other three. Having said that, the Forester takes the lead in terms of cargo space with 35.4 cubic feet of space on offer. Which is approximately 4.7 cubic feet more space than what the Sportage has to offer.

The standout interior features onboard the crossover include:

  • Available leather upholstered seats
  • Available heating and ventilation functionality for front seats
  • Dual-Zone automatic climate control
  • Black colored headlining
  • Black high-gloss center fascia

How intuitive is the car’s infotainment system?

The 2019 Sportage’s tech suite is spearheaded by the user-friendly UVO interface. This system brings an attractive and intuitive infotainment experience for the user. Buyers of the base model only have to settle for a 5-inch touchscreen display. However, this screen can be switched out to a fully modern 7-inch color LCD touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility with the help of the available package. Higher trims get a bigger 8-inch touchscreen, wireless charging, a Harman & Kardon audio system, and an extra USB port.

The tech suite of the 2019 Kia Sportage in a nutshell:

  • Base 5-inch touchscreen
  • 7-inch color LCD touchscreen
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Wireless smartphone charging
  • Bluetooth
  • Harman & Kardon sound system

Exterior

The 2019 Kia Sportage’s funky design grabs eyeballs whenever it rolls past the streets. Speaking of which, this out-of-the-box exterior design has had a mixed share of responses from various Kia enthusiasts. Kia changed the lower bumper area this year for a more masculine front-end design. This was apparently implemented after Kia received numerous customer feedback saying that the design catered more towards the female audience. The crossover also gets a new grille design and new LED headlights. The rear end gets some minor tweaks to its skid plate and taillight design. Overall, the Kia Sportage has a subtle personality to it, with no over-the-top exterior detailing.

The Kia Sportage's delectable proportions are the key to its bold aesthetics. The Sportage offers a decent 6.4 inches of ground clearance, although remember that this crossover isn’t geared for off-road travel. The crossover SUV’s lightweight body grants it an advantage in the speed and handling section. Dimension wise the Forester remains the longest and tallest, Sportage the widest, and the Mazda CX-5 with the longest wheelbase. The 8.7-inches of ground clearance on the Forester is the best-in-class. Thus we can safely say that overall in terms of dimensions the Forester is a dominating crossover SUV among all.

The distinctive exterior elements of the 2019 Kia Sportage are:

The SX Turbo models get dual exhausts, LED fog lights, and bigger 19-inches wheels. Some standard exterior features include:

  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Powered tailgate w/ memory function
  • Roof rack
  • Solar Control Glass
  • 17-inch alloy wheels

Safety
6.0/10

The 2019 Kia Sportage bagged a 5-star overall safety rating from NHTSA. The IIHS awarded the Sportage with a rating of ‘Good’ in its six parameters while the Headlights of the Sportage lineup were rated as ‘Acceptable’, ‘ Marginal’, and ‘Poor’, in the order of good to bad, based on the trim levels. When it comes to safety, Kia leaves no stone unturned to ensure that its passengers travel with peace of mind. The Sportage’s structure is fully composed of high-strength steel, which is a crucial element that reinforces its occupant protection in the instance of a crash.

Having said that, the Kia includes a full-fledged safety suite for its 2019 Sportage crossover, although the majority of them are not available on the base model. EX and SX Turbo models come standard with blind-spot monitoring, lane change assist, and rear cross-traffic alert. SX Turbo models also feature automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high beams as standard, which are options on the EX as part of the EX Technology package.

The standout safety features in the suite include

  • Cruise control
  • Blind-spot collision warning
  • Lane keep assist w/ lane departure warning
  • Front and rear parking sensor
  • Rear cross-traffic collision warning
  • Automatic high beams
  • Rear automated emergency braking

2019 Kia Sportage vs 2019 Hyundai Tucson

Both these Korean siblings are only regarded as secondary contenders in the overcrowded crossover SUV segment. In a way, both of these crossovers are identical in many aspects, offering the class-leading warranty and above-average resale value in their segment. The Tucson however suffers from its largely uninspiring powertrain.

The Tucson isn’t the best crossover to drive around town either, while the Sportage easily sits in the upper-end of its segment when it comes to handling dynamics. Tucson manages to win over a lot of its audience with its sharp looks. But the Sportage wins this duel with its more youthful personality and better powertrain options.

2019 Kia Sportage vs 2019 Mazda CX-5

Both the Kia Sportage and the Mazda CX-5 have made waves in the crossover segment by offering a load of standard features and technology at a budget-friendly price tag. The Mazda’s handling dynamics lean a bit more towards the sportier side, while the Kia justifies itself as more of an everyday cruiser. Kia’s excellent warranty terms establish it as the more reliable option in the long term.

The Mazda hits back with a slightly better fuel economy, which saves you more cash in the long run. Both the SUVs are sharply styled, attracting a lot of peeping eyes while you cruise around in your locality. In the end, it comes down to personal preference to decide which one to go for.

2019 Kia Sportage vs 2019 Subaru Forester

The Kia Sportage and the Subaru Forester are quite evenly matched SUVs on paper with an identical set of equipment and features. However, the differences begin to show up when you consider the capability of both the crossovers. The Forester is more adept at going off the beaten path than the Sportage. The Forester takes a further advantage by offering better fuel economy figures to explore the wilderness.

The Kia hits back with its class-leading ownership benefits and a more powerful turbo-4 engine option. However, the Forester again justifies itself as the better family choice by offering more maximum cargo and cabin space. The Sportage is the more trendy choice over the outdated Forester thanks to its sharp styling.

Final Verdict

The 2019 Kia Sportage is a great value-for-money proposition with a refined performance to savor your taste buds. This well-crafted crossover portrays itself as the perfect family cruiser, thanks to its relaxed driving quality and decent interior comfort. The Sportage does have some key shortcomings that prevented it from being the segment leader, like its subpar fuel economy and lack of cargo space compared to other rivals. Yet the current lineup of trims and features have already earned rave reviews from its audience, meaning the Kia Sportage still has a lot of potentials to attract the masses and create a niche for itself in the ever-growing crossover SUV segment.

The Kia Sportage is a safe vehicle for toddlers because my nephew loves riding in the suv and as long he's safe that's all that matters. The Performance of the vehicle Is remarkable and I love the breeze that comes from the air

              Love my Sportage

              Pros - ["Gas milage", "Reliability"]

Cons - ["Head light lenses are starting to oxidize", "The rubber cover for the rear hatch handle is dry roting"]

Have had this car since new. We bought it October of 2017 with 11 miles on it. We have 63k on it now and we have only replaced the tires, front brake pads and the battery 2xs ( we live in Florida and if you don't have an AGM battery you will only get about 2-2.5 years out of a standard battery
