Overview

The 2018 Kia Sportage is a fun and funky compact crossover SUV that gives serious competition to the likes of Honda CRV and Toyota RAV4, at an affordable price. The five-seat Kia Sportage was redesigned last year, giving it a sportier look, upgraded interior materials, and amped-up safety systems and tech features. For the 2018 model year, Kia has added a host of updates to the Sportage - the base LX trim gets updated cloth upholstery, and a new LX Technology Package offers blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and power-folding side mirrors with integrated turn signals. The 2018 Kia Sportage is available in the LX, EX, and SX trims with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The LX and EX models come with a 181 hp 2.4 liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine while only the top SX comes with a 240 hp 2.0 liter, four-cylinder turbocharged engine. All trims are equipped with the same six-speed automatic transmission. Despite mediocre fuel economy and modest cargo space, the athletic Sportage is a justifiable alternative to top-ranked compact SUV rivals.

2018 Kia Sportage Buying Advice

The 2018 Kia Sportage is a great used SUV. The new 2019 Kia Sportage starts at $23,750 and is a kind of a step back from the 2018 model. For 2019 MY, Kia removed some features such as heated rear seats while the base LX trim lost some optional features. A used 2018 Sportage comes come with these features and will also cost you less. The 2018 Sportage is part of a generation that started with the 2017 model and didn’t change much from the previous model year. We recommend the 2017 model, which is mostly identical and costs less than the 2018 model. Having said that, shoppers may choose the LX or EX trims but will have to compromise with the underpowered four-cylinder base engine with a decent MPG rating. Opt for the stronger SX Turbo trim which gets more power, a larger touch screen with navigation, and more driver-assist features.

The budget-friendly Kia Sportage is now in its fourth generation and is a must-test crossover considering its affordable pricing, ample standard features, athletic handling, and class-leading warranty. The 2018 Kia Sportage takes on rivals like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Ford Escape. The Kia Sportage has had numerous complaints about engine failure and other engine issues but those seem to have been rectified. There is also a single recall for 2018, with a high-pressure pipe that can leak. The Sportage comes with a basic warranty of five years/60,000 miles and a powertrain warranty of ten years/100,000 miles. Roadside assistance is standard with a plan covering five years/60,000 miles.

2018 Kia Sportage for sale

You can find a used 21018 Kia Sportage for sale from $14,900 to $25,000, depending on the vehicle's condition, mileage, location, and more. The MSRP of the 2018 Sportage LX with front-wheel drive starts from about $23,600, while the AWD model costs $25,100. The mid-level Sportage EX is a popular choice as for its reasonable price starting from $26,400, it adds more standard interior and safety technology. If you want turbo power, the SX starts at just $32,900 for the FWD model and $34,400 for the AWD model. Snow White Pearl is still one of the most popular exterior color choices, followed by Sparkling Silver, both of which make the Sportage stand out in the crowd.

Buying Advice

Even the base LX is loaded with features and is a good choice to go with. Equipping it with Popular and Technology packages gets you some extras including an upgraded touchscreen and accident avoidance tech. If you want a more powerful engine then opt for the SX Turbo, however, the EX is the best value for money in the lineup. You get almost every feature that Kia has to offer in Sportage excluding the turbo-four engine and it costs several thousand less than the SX Turbo.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2018 Kia Sportage lineup comes with three trim levels, priced between $23,600-$32,900. The first two trims get a base 2.4L 4-cylinder engine that generates 181 HP and 175 lb-ft of torque. With an average 0-60 mph acceleration performance, on one hand, the Sportage shows some phenomenal braking and towing abilities on the other. It can tow as much as 2000 pounds and is one of the best in class for the same.

The other engine offering of the Kia Sportage is a turbocharged 2.0L engine that generates 240 HP and 260 lb-ft of torque. This engine is offered only on the SX trim, priced at an MSRP of $32,900. The entry-level Sportage trims get a soothing interior that offers decent space both for cargo and passengers. With a rather compact exterior design, the 2018 Sportage offers a perfect score in terms of its safety offering. Overall, this is indeed a value for money option and should be considered. The 2018 Kia Sportage has had one recall issued for a High-pressure fuel pipe may leak. Before buying any used vehicle, make sure all recalls have been addressed.

Buying Advice

Despite being the base trim, the LX trim is priced at $23,600 and is loaded with features. However, we would recommend the EX trim at a price of $26,400. It comes equipped with features such as Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, advanced safety features, and premium interiors. The best offering is actually in the high-end trim, the SX, however, is priced above the $30,000 mark and we wouldn't recommend it.

The 2018 Sportage LX FWD with the base 2.4L engine returns as much as 23 mpg city, 30 mpg Highway, and 26 mpg combined. The all-wheel-drive LX and EX models deliver 21/25 mpg city/highway. The Sportage SX which comes with a turbocharged engine drops the fuel economy ratings to 21/26 mpg for FWD models and 20/23 mpg for the AWD models. Kia has always been at the forefront in terms of delivering efficient engines, the 2018 Kia Sportage experiences the same with a fuel economy that is pretty decent when compared with the offering of its rivals.

Interior
7.0/10

“What has improved, however, is visibility, thanks to thinner A- and C-pillars and more rear glass, which is a welcome change. … Extending over the back seat was my favorite of the interior features”- Cars.com

Kia offers the utmost comfort and opulence inside the cabin of the 2018 Sportage. 2018 Kia Sportage Vs 2018 Hyundai Tucson

Both the Hyundai and the Kia come from the same parent company, this is clearly visible when you see the specifications of both their offerings, the Tucson and Sportage. With several similarities across all the aspects, there does exist a major difference in their power output, this is despite getting a similar engine, it further gets similar rotors for their wheels, similar interior specs, and even similar pricing.

When put up against the 2018 Mazda CX-5, which comes priced at $24,450, it is the latter that offers slightly more power than the Sportage, and this translates to better acceleration performance. However, in terms of towing capacity both the vehicles are just the same, with the ability to tow 2000 pounds. Kia Sportage has a better brake performance, while the Mazda comes back with a better fuel economy on offer. In terms of interiors, both the offerings are alike, for a slightly lower price we would suggest the Kia Sportage.

2018 Kia Sportage Vs 2018 Ford Escape

Up against the 2018 Ford Escape, the pricing of both are similar, priced at $23,940, for the Escape and $23,600, for the Sportage. However, in terms of power output, it is the Sportage that is way ahead with an offering of 181hp, while the Ford Escape churns out only 168 HP. Even in terms of fuel efficiency, it is Sportage that has a better offering. Moving on to the interior aspect, we again find that both the vehicles have a similar passenger space to offer. Love my Sportage

              Pros - ["Gas milage", "Reliability"]

Cons - ["Head light lenses are starting to oxidize", "The rubber cover for the rear hatch handle is dry roting"]

Have had this car since new. We bought it October of 2017 with 11 miles on it. We have 63k on it now and we have only replaced the tires, front brake pads and the battery 2xs ( we live in Florida and if you don't have an AGM battery you will only get about 2-2.5 years out of a standard battery
