Overview

The 2018 Dodge Durango is now available for sale with a starting price of $29,995. It is offered in three trims which are SXT, GT, and Citadel. These trims are powered by a 3.6L V6 engine that makes 293 hp and 260 lb-ft. of torque while its towing capacity is rated at 6,200 pounds. The R/T and SRT (new for 2018) models come with a brawny V8 for athletic performance, both of which we have reviewed separately.

The Durango stands out from its segment as it offers both RWD and AWD configurations. In terms of gas mileage, the Durango's fuel estimates are average. The cabin of the Durango seats up to seven people and comes with a lot of comfort and technological features. It also packs a decent list of driver aids. It receives heavy challenges from the likes of the Ford Explorer, the Honda Pilot, and the Chevy Traverse

Buying Advice

The GT trim is the best go-to option as it packs a lot of features and is also accessible to the Technology package for adding top driver aids. This model adds third-row seats, leather upholstery, satellite radio, heated steering wheel, heated front, and second-row seats, rear parking sensors, a power liftgate, and power front seats. Otherwise, if you looking for a 5-seater Durango, pick the base SXT trim.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2018 Dodge Durango offers a skill set that none of its 3-row crossover competitors can match- Autotrader

The Dodge Durango offers the flexibility of seating up to seven passengers and can quickly be configured for cargo. It has great towing capabilities and powerful engine choices that make this large SUV fun to drive. The performance aspect of the Durango with the V8 Hemi is hard to find in an SUV this large. The downsides are middling fuel economy and safety ratings that aren't on par with other competitors.

Coming to the ownership costs, the Durango is slightly more expensive to maintain. It costs around $8,800 per year for its repair, fuel, depreciation, maintenance, etc. Apart from its high ownership costs, its reliability ratings are also on the lower side. It scored 79 out of 100 which is ab average score and ranks fourteenth on the list. On the other side, its rivals have all scored and ranked better than the Durango.

Features
8.0/10

The Durango provides a wide array of standard and available technologies- Carfax

The Dodge Durango is available in three trims. These include the SXT, GT, and Citadel. These trims are equipped with a 3.6L V6 engine. The Durango is also available in the R/T and SRT trim, the latter being new for this year. These two trims get more powerful V8 fixed under their hoods for enhanced performance and hence, we have reviewed them separately for detailed understanding.

All the trims come standard with an RWD configuration while an  AWD system is a $2,600 option. The Durango may look like a classic crossover but its features are solidly planted in the future. In addition, the Durango is also available with a lot of optional packages. The top-end Citadel trim gets an exclusive $3,995 Anodizezd Platinum package that adds platinum accents throughout the exterior, 20-inch black wheels, black roof rails

We Recommend

The GT trim is the best go-to option as it packs a lot of features and is also accessible to the Technology package for adding top driver aids. This model adds third-row seats, leather upholstery, satellite radio, heated steering wheel, heated front, and second-row seats, rear parking sensors, a power liftgate, and power front seats. Otherwise, if you looking for a 5-seater Durango, pick the base SXT trim.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

An 8-speed automatic helps the 2018 Dodge Durango earn better fuel economy than you might expect- The Car Connection

The Dodge Durango is not the kind of SUV to earn praises for its fuel economy because its V6 engine is the thirstiest in this segment. The EPA-estimated MPG figures are 19 MPG in the city, 26 MPG on a highway, and 21 MPG combined. The AWD versions drop down the city and highway estimates by 1 MPG but retain the same combined mileage.

The R/T trim has the worst fuel economy owing to its powerful engine. The fuel ratings include 14 MPG in the city, 22 MPG on a highway, and 17 MPG combined. Thanks to its large 24.6-gallon fuel tank, the Durango delivers a combined range of 553 miles and it falls down with 529 miles with an AWD system. The R/T model offers the least range in the lineup at 442 miles.

Range (City/Highway/Combined; Miles) 467/640/553 330/484/407 316/446/381 371/527/449

The Honda Pilot is the most fuel-efficient SUV in this competition. However, its small fuel tank results in less driving range than the Durango. The Ford Explorer's fuel estimates are not impressive but is efficiency is commendable. Even the Chevy Traverse suffers from the same curse as the Durango. It has the worst fuel ratings in this competition.

7.0/10

2018 Dodge Durango Seating and Comfort

The interior of the Dodge Durango features good-quality materials and has a nice modern layout. The Durango seats only seven which is one less than other three-row SUVs as the second-row seats are captain chairs. Speaking of front-seat comfort, they are a bit firm, but they hold you pretty well with good side bolstering. Except for the SXT trim, the front seats are power-adjustable and heated. The steering wheel is also power-adjustable only on the Citadel trim and nicely integrates audio controls.

The second-row captain chairs are pretty comfortable and well-bolstered but they seat you a bit low. Moreover, these two captain seats are heated as well. When it comes to space, the second row offers slightly less legroom than the first row but that's not much of a concern. The second row does fold up for easy access to the third row which is large enough for a full-sized adult. The headroom is decent in the third row but the legrrom is too short. But there's reasonable space for small children.

Both the Chevy Traverse and the Honda Pilot offer an extra seat while the Ford Explorer offers a similar seating capacity as the Durango. The Pilot offers the best headroom in the third row while the Traverse excels more legroom in the last row. Also, the Explorer offers more shoulder room in the first two rows than the Durango.

2018 Dodge Durango Infotainment System

The center of the dash is dominated by a 7-inch touchscreen on lower trims and an 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment system on the Citadel trim. Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included in the bigger screen. It also features built-in apps as well as touchscreen control of the climate system. Luckily, there are also physical buttons to make things easier. The graphics are nice and the touch response is good. It is known in the business for its easy-to-understand interface.

The infotainment system is paired with a 6-speaker setup on lower trims while the Citadel trim gets a 9-speaker Alpine premium sound system. The built-in navigation system on the larger screen is pretty good with easy access to quick searches and traffic data. Second-row passengers are treated to a dual-screen DVD entertainment system that costs an extra $1,995. The gauges are digital and unlike any other carmakers, they smoothly integrate digital data along with physical tiles.

2018 Dodge Durango Interior Features

The cabin of the Durango is filled with a lot of comfort and technological features. Some of them include:

  • Power tilt & telescopic multi-function leather, heated steering wheel with paddle shifters
  • 8-way power front leather seats
  • Heated front & rear seats
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Remote engine start

  • Navigation system

2018 Dodge Durango Cargo Capacity

The Dodge Durango has a competitive 17.2 cubic feet of cargo capacity in the back with all three rows up. Fold down the small seats and you get 47.7 cubic feet. With everything lying flat, you are looking at 84.5 cubic feet of total cargo space. The Durango also features a secret cubby just under the load floor.

You can get easy access to the trunk with a power tailgate. The leftover height of the Durango is high but its square-shaped trunk and flat loading lip help to load items into the cargo area easily. There's also plenty of interior storage but if you option the Blu-ray DVD entertainment system, you're going to lose quite a bit of storage.

The Chevy Traverse is the leader with a maximum cargo space of 98 cubic feet in this field. The Honda Pilot's total cargo volume is slightly less than the Durango. Meanwhile, the maximum cargo space in the Ford Explorer is just over 81 cubic feet and therefore, stands in the last place.

Exterior
7.0/10

The Durango's exterior styling is exactly aggressive enough without going overboard, even in base models– Kelley Blue Book

2018 Dodge Durango Dimension and Weight

One of the reasons you might be interested in the Dodge Durango is because it has a really cool exterior. The chrome grille sits in between halogen headlights on the lower trims and HID lamps on the Citadel trim. Down the lower fascia, there's a more aggressive splitter highlighted by fog lamps. The Durango has a ground clearance of 8.1 inches, that's probably the highest in the segment.

The wheel options for the Durango include 17 and 18-inch alloy wheels. It also has the widest wheelbase in its class. Its cabin isn't much spacious but offers a poised ride. Coming at the back, the Durango has what Dodge calls a Racetrack taillamp. It has an LED light assembly and looks very distinctive at night. Down on the lower fascia, you get only dual exhaust but there's a removable panel perfect for when you're using a trailer hitch.

However, this doesn't impact is passenger space and is much easier to park in tight spaces. The body of the Ford Explorer is wider than the Durango and that explains more shoulder room in its interior.

Safety
4.0/10

The Durango’s crash-test results are acceptable, but they’re far from class leading– CarAndDriver

The Dodge Durango received a total of four out of five stars for its safety from NHTSA. In the front crash and rollover tests, it received four stars whereas a perfect five stars were given to the Durango for the side-impact test. These ratings are good for an SUV. The detailed NHTSA ratings of the Durango are given below:

The Durango earned decent ratings from IIHS. It received 'Good' ratings in almost all crash tests, which is a good thing. However, it also received the second-lowest 'Marginal' rating for the driver's side crash test and headlights. The front crash prevention in the Durango has been rated the highest 'Superior' rating.

The list of driver assistance features available in the Durango are mentioned below:

  • Rearview Camera
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Lane Departure Warning

  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Rain-Sensing Windshield Wipers

Competition
9.0/10

2018 Dodge Durango vs 2018 Ford Explorer

The initial price of the Ford Explorer is more than the Durango. It is similarly powered as the Durango but its light curb weight helps to achieve better acceleration than the Durango. Its fuel efficiency is also better but it cannot beat the Durango in terms of towing capacity. Inside, the Explorer's cabin is more spacious and practical. The Explorer's safety ratings are average but host a long list of driver aids.

2018 Dodge Durango vs 2018 Chevrolet Traverse

The Chevy Traverse is the most powerful SUV in this competition and naturally, it performs better on the road. But, its tow ratings are rated less than the Durango. It also has the worst MPG figures but makes up by offering a roomy cabin and class-leading cargo space. it also packs more standard features than the Durango. In terms of safety, the Traverse packs more driver-assist features than the Durango.

2018 Dodge Durango vs 2018 Honda Pilot

Unlike the Durango, the Honda Pilot is powered by just one engine that is underpowered. Yet, its on-road performance is way better thanks to its light curb weight. Moreover, this engine is also the most fuel-efficient here. The Pilot's cabin feels lightly spacious while its cargo capacity is the same as the Durango. The Pilot was named the 'Top Safety Pick' for its crashworthiness and also comes with more safety features.

Final Verdict

The Dodge Durango aims for families who want a good combination of cargo, towing, and features that will keep adults and kids entertained. It succeeds on those fronts despite being short on safety and fuel economy. Another reason for its low rankings in its class is below average reliability ratings. Nevertheless, the Durango is a good option.

              Overall great ride and comfortable

Pros - ["Drives well", "It's my Sexy mom whip"]

Cons - ["Not 4 wheel drive", "I wish the interior was darker"]

I love the performance and sport mode as well as my sunroof and it has some great features like automatic high beams and wipers but it's a sweet and sexy SUV that I've become very attached to I live my Durango citadel
